NUWAKOT, Nepal (AP) — Aid began to reach some survivors in Nepal on Friday following the catastrophic flash floods that swept through the mountainous border region between Nepal and China, as the full scope of the devastation continued to emerge and survivors sought shelter at makeshift army relief centers.
Children who have been separated from their families are being given shelter as attempts are made to reunite them with families.
The U.N.'s agency for children said at least 17,000 children are in urgent need of humanitarian ****** istance, while 18 schools have been destroyed and another 20 damaged.
The International Red Cross estimates that at least 93,000 people have been affected and are in "great need."

A teenager who went into care when he was 10 has described how he struggled to navigate the system and seek help.
Hayden, now aged 17, lived in a children's home until he was 16 before moving into a semi-independent home. After feeling unsafe there he ended up sofa-surfing.
"There is an incredible amount of individuals working so hard to improve the lives of young people but the system is fundamentally flawed," said Hayden, who got in touch with the BBC via Your Voice to share his experience.
A new government-commissioned report found that young adult care-leavers have a death rate about four times higher than the general population.
The report noted the potentially catastrophic consequences for those who are often left alone "with no safety net".

MOSCOW, Aug 27 (Reuters) - Russia warned on Thursday that it could strike British military targets inside and outside Ukraine in response to Ukrainian attacks on targets inside Russia using long-range British cruise missiles.
The warning, delivered by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova at a news briefing in Moscow, was the strongest of is kind yet from Russia to Britain, a NATO member state and a staunch ally of Ukraine.
Zakharova said London was "one step away" from becoming legally complicit in what she called "terrorism" against Russian civilians, something she said would have "catastrophic consequences" unless Britain changed course.
"We have repeatedly warned that any British military installations and equipment in Ukraine and beyond its borders could be targeted in response to Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory carried out using British weapons," she said.
"We propose that the British leadership once again carefully **** yse the situation and immediately, in the most resolute and unequivocal manner, abandon the hostile, aggressive line, which can only ... create the risk of the conflict escalating to an entirely new level," she said.

For the second day in a row, the San Francisco Giants have placed a starting pitched on the Injured List with a potentially devastating injury. On Tuesday, it was lefty Carson Whisenhunt, who left Monday's start with elbow discomfort and is now headed for Tommy John surgery. And on Wednesday, it was righty Adrian Houser, who left Tuesday's game with elbow discomfort and will now hope for better news than his teammate.
The Giants officially placed Houser on the 15-Day Injured List with a right forearm strain. Taking his place on the roster is right-handed reliever Braxton Roxby, who had his contract purchased from AAA Sacramento. To make ******* e on the 40-man roster for Roxby, the Giants moved Whisenhunt to the 60-Day IL.
The hope is that Houser, who is under contract for next year, has avoided a catastrophic injury. He sounded fairly optimistic after the game, which is a good sign. We'll have to wait and see.
As for Roxby, this will be his chance to make his MLB debut. The 27-year old was an undrafted free agent following the truncated 2020 draft, and came to the Giants in the Taylor Rogers trade before the 2025 season. He has just a 4.11 ERA and a 4.92 FIP with Sacramento this season, but has been pitching very well over the last month or two.
He's a four-pitch pitcher, who this year has relied fairly heavily on a slider, sinker, and cutter, with his four-seam fastball — which averages 94.6 mph — being used quite a bit less frequently than that trio. The fastball and slider have really stymied AAA hitters this year, while the cutter has been hit fairly hard and the sinker has been demolished. It will be interesting to see what pitch mix the Giants have him throw.

The new study, trumpeted by the New York Times with a companion article suggesting that OSHA should get involved, regarding CTE rates in pro football likely won't alter in any major way the realities of or participation in the sport, at all levels. Unless and until CTE can be diagnosed in living patients, football players will continue to embrace the vague (but real) risk of developing cognitive problems later in life.
But the data could provide ammunition for one specific aspect of the game. It could fuel an effort to move the touchback point on kickoffs from the 35 back to the 30.
Last year, when the touchback changed to the 35 and teams became incentivized to put more kickoffs in play, concussions spiked. Specifically for the player returning the kick and the player tackling him.
The league is well aware of this reality. And the question is whether the NFL becomes content to have fewer returns in the name of having fewer high-impact hits for two of the 22 players on the field during a kickoff play.
And while the current kickoff play dramatically reduces the possibility of the one potential outcome the league never says out loud (catastrophic neck injuries leading to potential paralysis or death), it presents a clear risk of increased concussions. With Alec Pierce recovering from off-season ankle surgery the Indianapolis wide receiver room was beginning to feel concerning. A single injury to Josh Downs (who recently left practice with what was described as an "upper body injury") could have been catastrophic to the offense's chance to repeat the success it had during the first half of 2025.
Enter Keenan Allen.
In the weeks leading up to training camp and the preseason, many speculated that Indy could be interested in Allen in the days and weeks leading up to the start of the season. It made sense. He needed a team, the Colts needed a receiver, Indy has an offensive playcaller familiar with the veteran receiver and more importantly, Allen's familiarity with Steichen's offensive system. Most of the time moves this obvious don't happen for one reason or another but this ended up being the rare NFL scenario of what seemed like such an obvious solution, actually happening.
Time will tell if this signing will move any needles for an Indy offense that will likely lean hard on second year tight end Tyler Warren and it's ground game headed up by Jonathan Taylor, as always. But on paper signing a former six time Pro Bowler who caught 81 passes a season ago, this move though not flashy, could end up being just what the offense needs to continue to grow, evolve and produce the kinds of results everyone in the Colts' building is hoping for and expecting.
I have been told that this deal has taken quite a bit of time to hammer out and it isn't something the Colts recently decided to do. If that's true (and I have no reason to believe it isn't) there's no reason to panic over Alec Pierce's ankle or Josh Downs' recent practice injury. At least not yet.

Entering 2026, he'll be a part of a crowded receiver room that includes Nico Collins, Xavier Hutchinson and Jayden Higgins. And coming off a severe injury that sidelined him for nearly two years, it could be risky to add him into the immediate plans regarding fantasy rosters.
However, one fantasy football expert thinks Dell could be a sleeper option this season.

Some days, Tamara Johnson wonders how her life changed so rapidly.
Johnson, 58, made six figures in an executive leadership position, and when her mother was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and dementia in 2017, she moved from New Orleans to Virginia, where she continued to work while caring for her mother.
Three years after her mom's death in 2020, Johnson's husband suffered a series of catastrophic medical events. To care for him full-time, she took a temporary leave and then quit her job this year. She relied on income from her job's deferred resignation program and her savings to pay for his long-term care. Johnson estimates her family spent over $700,000 in total between her mom's and husband's care. Coming up with that money has been harder, as her husband's income from medical disability retirement was quartered.
"I was one of those people who was taught that you don't quit, you suck it up, and you keep going," Johnson said. "I felt like I didn't have the luxury of falling apart, because if I fell apart, then who would pick up the slack?"

The Pittsburgh Pirates are in the middle of a catastrophic late season collapse that has seen them drop to the bottom of the National League Central and 5.5 games back from a Wild Card spot, with five other teams ahead of them. The question now of course is does management need to be held accountable if the Pirates once again miss the postseason?
We asked yinz to vote on this matter and whether or not General Manager Ben Cherington will be fired if the Pirates miss the playoffs for the 11th straight season. The results are officially in, and 43% of the voters believe that Cherington will be fired if the Pirates miss the postseason.
The facts surrounding Cherington's time in Pittsburgh are not pretty. As the GM of the Pirates Cherington has a record of 425-569 over the course of seven seasons. His lowly .427 winning percentage has resulted in zero playoff berths, zero division ****** les and zero winning records. He's also been at the helm for back to back 100 loss seasons.
Despite his lack of success, most that voted believe Cherington will not receive his pink slip from the Pirates if they miss the postseason. In defense of Cherington, the team did go out and make big moves this past offseason. They signed Ryan O'Hearn to a multi-year contract, while also trading for Brandon Lowe, Jake Mangum and Mason Montgomery. Lowe currently leads all second basemen in home runs this season, and has the most homers by a Pirates' second baseman in a single season. Jake Mangum was named the Pirates' Heart and Hustle award winner, while Ryan O'Hearn was enjoying great success with the team before being put on the injured list with a quad injury. Needless to say that those moves have largely paid off in the Pirates' favor.
Those were great signings, but Cherington also signed Marcell Ozuna to be the team's designated hitter. Ozuna's time in Pittsburgh saw him serve more as the designated strikeout before he was finally released after the trade deadline. Cherington also parted ways with pitching coach Oscar Marin. What has resulted is a rotation with all the talent in the world and nothing to show for it. It's a group that has completely fell apart this season under Bill Murphy and is not performing nearly as good as they should be. The bullpen has also been a disaster all season, and despite the moves that were made at the deadline the Pirates are further from a postseason berth than they have been all season.

New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel indicated that rookie offensive tackle Caleb Lomu will be in the mix at guard, according to Boston Herald's Doug Kyed.
Along with Lomu, veteran offensive tackle James Hudson will also continue to get reps at the guard position.
The depth at guard has been questionable behind Alijah Vera-Tucker and Mike Onwenu. That has pushed the Patriots to search for other options for emergency situations. It never hurts to be prepared, and either Lomu or Hudson could have their number called if something catastrophic happens.
Along with Lomu and Hudson, Ben Brown is also expected to be in the mix for backup duties.
The Patriots drafted Lomu in the first round as the expected replacement for veteran right tackle Morgan Moses at some point. However, there were no guarantees that would happen this season.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – New observations of some of Neptune's moons and rings are providing evidence of a catastrophe that occurred billions of years ago around the solar system's outermost planet in which a Pluto-sized interloper caused a celestial demolition derby.
Researchers used NASA's James Webb ***** e Telescope to examine the composition of three of Neptune's small inner moons — Proteus, Larissa and Galatea — and its inner dusty rings, and detected clay minerals that one might expect to find deep inside certain worlds in the outer reaches of the solar system. These magnesium-rich minerals are known to exist on the dwarf planet Ceres, which orbits in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, and in some meteorites.
"These minerals require prolonged contact between liquid water and rock to form," said planetary scientist Ryleigh Davis, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, San Diego, and lead author of the study published in the journal Science Advances.
"The moons themselves are far too small and cold for that chemistry to have occurred in place, so the clay had to come from somewhere else — the deep interior of a much larger ancient world. Finding this material on Neptune's inner moons points to a catastrophic event in Neptune's past that destroyed those ancient worlds and exposed their deep interiors, with the small moons and rings we see today re-forming from that wreckage," said Davis, who worked on the study while at Caltech.

Markwayne Mullin, the US homeland security secretary, doubled down on Donald Trump's unsubstantiated election claims on Friday amid his agency's efforts to support the president's agenda.
Trump used a review compiled by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as the basis of many of his unsubstantiated claims on Thursday during his televised primetime address to the nation.
"This isn't about rehashing the 2020 election. This is just exposing what took place, and to make sure it never happens again," Mullin said, after the president's speech was widely criticized for revealing no new information about the safety and security of the US elections, despite claiming that system falls "catastrophically short" of "greatness".
Mullin claimed that the DHS identified "250,000 noncitizens registered to vote in California, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Nevada". However, election experts, including David Becker, the executive director of the nonpartisan Center for Election Innovation & Research, said the administration has not been "transparent about the methodology" in reaching that number.

Penn State has a long and convoluted college football history that includes extended periods of success, brief periods of inactivity, and a whole bunch of drama in between the lines. But everything they've encountered in their nearly 140-year history has led them to the 2026 season, where Matt Campbell will be at the helm for the first time as the team embarks on a redemption journey.
They had a catastrophic 2025 season that resulted in a coaching change, an abandoned 2027 recruiting class and a lot of uncertainty about the program. Fast forward to today and it's a miracle that the outlook on the Nittany Lions has flipped so dramatically. USA Today's Paul Myerberg ranked all 18 Big Ten programs and had Penn State listed at No. 5.
It doesn't help the school's case that the conference has been on a national championship run as of late, with Michigan, Ohio State, and Indiana all achieving glory in consecutive years since 2024. Unsurprisingly, those are three of the teams ranked above the Nittany Lions, with the Oregon Ducks being the only team missing a national championship that has a better outlook.

Earlier in Sean McVay’s career with the Los Angeles Rams, you could levy a fair complaint that he was often slow to adjust—whether in-season or in-game.
But since a catastrophic Super Bowl defeat at the hands of Bill Belichick in 2018, McVay has continued to find ways to reinvent himself as well as his offensive scheme.
Nate Tice joined Steve Palazzolo on the “Check the Mic” podcast recently to discuss the trends that will define the 2026 NFL season. McVay, rightfully so, came up often in the conversation.
We know teams across the league attempt to emulate both McVay and the Rams. The newest idea others will borrow is McVay’s recent experiments with heavier personnel packages and increased utilization of tight ends, as evidenced by teams selecting run-blocking TE’s much earlier in the draft than normal.
But the Rams mostly stay ahead of the curve now. They don’t need to worry about copycats because by the time the rest of the NFL catches up they remain one step ahead. If that holds true again in 2026, LA will have a realistic shot at making good on their Super Bowl expectations.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Catcher Eliézer Alfonzo made his major league debut for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday with his sister and stepmother still missing after Venezuela's catastrophic earthquakes.
The 26-year-old Alfonzo batted ninth and caught Emmet Sheehan in the Dodgers' home game against the San Diego Padres.
Alfonzo’s 16-year-old sister, Eliana, and his stepmother, Patricia, have been missing since multiple earthquakes hit his homeland on June 24. Several Latin American media outlets reported Sunday that their bodies had been found in the wreckage of the hotel in La Guaira where they were staying, but the Dodgers announced no confirmation of the reports.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he hadn't yet spoken to Alfonzo about two hours before the first pitch at Dodger Stadium.
“Don't really know what to say about it, outside of my heart goes out to him and his family,” Roberts said. “So he is in there. I think he's going to play today, but obviously it's — a heavy heart is not even justifying. I don't want to really go too far, because I'll get emotional. So I don't know. Yeah, I know it's tough. Very tough.”

Speaking ahead of the return for pre-season, FC Nantes CEO and son of owner Waldemar Kita, Franck, had addressed Les Canaris’ catastrophic 2025/26 campaign, which ended with relegation to Ligue 2.
“When we win, it’s thanks to everyone; when we lose, I take full responsibility. I am the boss, I am the owner of the club, I am the one to blame, first and foremost. I am the only one to blame. The New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs four games to one last night, overcoming multiple double-digit deficits along the way. While much of New York City and New Jersey celebrate the Knicks’ extinguishing New York’s long ******* le drought across the Big Four sports leagues (stretching back to the Giants in 2011), Rutgers nation can take pride in seeing one of their own step up big time for the Spurs. Dylan Harper not only played extensive minutes, but he looked like the best Spur on the court for large parts of this series.
Despite coming off the bench the entire series, Harper averaged 18 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 3 ******* ists per game. As the series got better, so did the rookie out of Rutgers, with his crowning performance coming in an elimination Game 5 at home. Harper led the team with 25 points while also contributing 5 rebounds and 4 ******* ists while playing 31 minutes off the bench.

His crafty finishing around the rim caught the eyes of fans nationwide, while his tenacious defending made things difficult for New York throughout the series.
