Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho said Tuesday he is "very happy" with his squad, which he considers complete despite missing out on midfielder Rodri, later signed by rivals Barcelona.
Los Blancos revamped their squad this summer, signing six players including record arrival Yan Diomande, Bernardo Silva and Marc Cucurella.
However Madrid's approach for Rodri broke down, meaning beyond former Man City playmaker Silva, they have not strengthened in midfield.
"For me the squad is closed, but the market is still open -- you never know if a player will come and say 'I've been benched twice and I want to leave'," Mourinho told reporters.
"In theory no (more deals)... but something could always happen... In my head the squad is closed closed, and I have not asked for anyone. I am very happy with the players I have."

The Julian Alvarez saga looks set to continue until September 1, the final day of the transfer window.
The Atletico Madrid and Argentina striker remains determined that he only wants to play for Barça, while the Rojiblancos are now considering selling him for €150 million, although not to Barcelona.
The Argentine forward remains firmly committed to Barcelona, his only preferred destination.
As reported by Catalunya Radio (h/t SPORT), the 26-year-old has reiterated to Barça officials in recent hours that he is prepared to withstand the pressure and wait in the hope of eventually breaking through Atlético Madrid's resistance.
At the same time, he has made a more public gesture on social media that appears to reinforce that commitment. He "liked" a TikTok video linking him with Barcelona.

This summer has seen many young Real Madrid starlets leave the club in search of regular minutes, with the pathway to the first team almost non-existent.
Both Gonzalo Garcia and Cesar Palacios left Los Blancos to join former manager Alvaro Arbeloa at Fulham.
The duo have already become starters for the Cottagers and played against Chelsea last night, with Gonzalo getting one of Fulham's goals.
Now, according to The Athletic, Jorge Cestero could be one of the next young Madrid players to leave in search of regular minutes.
The 20-year-old, who is also wanted by Lille in Ligue 1, is considering a move to Italy.

Atlético Madrid star Julián Alvarez has early this week dropped a fresh hint regarding his eagerness to take his talents to La Liga rivals Barcelona before the summer is out.
This of course comes fresh off a harrowing evening for the Argentine on Sunday.
Afforded a place on the bench for Atlético's league meeting with Villarreal, Alvarez found himself the target of a heavy and incessant round of boos, whistles and jeers on the part of the Metropolitano crowd.
After the attacker announced his desire to move on earlier this summer, the Rojiblancos faithful made crystal clear that they have not forgiven Alvarez in any way, shape or form.
Safe to say, then, that the 26-year-old's latest activity on social media is unlikely to go down overly well, either…

Benny Blanco shared the results of his five-day pizza diet to prove that "you can lose weight, eating literally anything."
The prolific music producer, 38, explained his plans in an August 21 TikTok: "I'm going to eat one pizza a day and lose weight. My pizza of choice? One large thin crust" from Domino's. Showing a small slice of the pizza, he quipped, "Like, how is this supposed to last me a whole day? This is one-sixteenth of everything I can eat today."
Blanco, who began the challenge at 152.2 lbs, shared that the point was "to prove you can lose weight, eating literally anything." He stayed committed, even bringing the pizza with him when joining wife Selena Gomez for dinner at a restaurant.

His diet had a few setbacks — like when he accidentally dropped a slice on the ground, or returned to the studio to find "someone ate like eight slices of my pizza."

Carlos Espi is arguably the least notable signing made by Real Madrid this summer, and he is definitely the "smallest" name when compared to the likes of Yan Diomande, Bernardo Silva and Ibrahima Konate. However, he made the biggest impact during Los Blancos' 2-1 victory over Espanyol on Saturday, as he scored the winning goal in the 90th minute.
As per MD, Espi was asked about that moment when he spoke at his presentation on Sunday, as he admitted that he struggled to sleep due to the adrenaline of the moment.
"We arrived home at 3am and between messages and that euphoria that I had on top of me, I slept very little because, in addition, I woke up wanting to come here. The truth is that I have slept very little. It was a very beautiful moment, we all had a lot of desire, a lot of euphoria. When I scored they were all there in the corner, it was incredible that they were all with me, they were all happy for me and I am proud that the Real Madrid players are very happy for me."
Espi also spoke on making the move to Real Madrid earlier this summer, which is something that he is very proud of.
"It's a source of pride. I'm very happy for my family and for myself and I'm going to give my all for this club. It's very impressive to see the 15 Champions Leagues, I'm very happy. It's impressive, they take care of every detail. On a football level they are the best in the world. The facilities, the Bernabéu, when I went to the Bernabéu it was incredible. I would say practically everything."

On a scorching afternoon in Madrid, Atlético de Madrid finally got their first weekend home kickoff of the season, with over 60,000 fans packed into the Metropolitano to welcome the Rojiblancos and properly usher in the new campaign against fellow Champions League side Villarreal.
Two penalties, a red card, and a very complicated homecoming later, Atleti walked away with a point they were truthfully fortunate to get.
Let's dive into the takeaways!
Between the heat and a lineup still finding its feet, this always had the makings of a sluggish start. Several of these players are only just back from a shortened summer, still getting reacquainted, and it showed.
For the opening hour, Atleti dominated the shooting charts on paper, outshooting Villarreal 11 to 6. But only two efforts were on target, and the underlying picture told a very different story. Villarreal had 23 touches in Atleti's box to Atleti's 19 in theirs. The visitors also created three big chances in the first half alone, while Atleti created zero. They even out-passed Atleti, 271 to 217. The Rojiblancos were a team going through the motions of control without really controlling anything.

Performances like the one we witnessed last night can stay in our memories for a loooong time. What Chivas delivered in its 5-2 rout of Xolos at Estadio AKRON was truly memorable, Chivahermanos.
Now that the storm of emotions has passed—quite literally—it's time to take a closer look at the best numbers from the Rojiblancos' third victory of the Apertura 2026. And there's plenty to unpack.
That's why we've put together an ideal XI of stats to review right here:
What Chivas' Rout of Xolos Left Behind
- The Rebaño Sagrado reached 10 points in the AP26, moving into 4th place in the standings.- The Rojiblancos have now won 3 straight matches across the Leagues Cup and Liga MX.- This is the third time in 2026 that Guadalajara has scored 5 goals in a match at Estadio AKRON: against León and Puebla in the CL26, and now against Xolos.- Chivas extended its unbeaten run against Xolos at Estadio AKRON to 6 matches: 5 wins and 1 draw.- The Chiverío replicated the formula behind its first two goals: a cross to the near post, a flick-on and a finish from the second line.- Gabriel Milito has now won 26 of his 51 matches as Guadalajara's head coach.- Ricardo Marín recorded his second brace as a Rojiblanco. The previous one came against Atlas in the AP23.- Santiago Sandoval scored his first goal of the AP26.- Roberto Alvarado remains Chivas' leading scorer in the current soccer year, with his goal against Xolos taking him to 4 goals.- Diego Campillo scored again for Guadalajara, his second professional goal.- Guadalajara had not taken a 3-0 halftime lead in a Liga MX match since Matchday 6 of the AP24 against Juárez.

Real Madrid have started their 2026-27 La Liga season in typical Madrid fashion, securing a late 2-1 victory over Espanyol.
Jose Mourinho and company have Carlos Espi to thank for securing all three points against the Catalan club, with the 21-year-old enjoying a dream start to his Los Blancos career.
His immediate impact has already caught the attention of former striker Joselu, who knows exactly how valuable a traditional No. 9 can be at the Bernabeu.

It has been a while since the Rodri saga between Barcelona and Real Madrid ended once and for all.
Los Blancos looked favourites to sign him from the start of the summer, but the Catalan club leapfrogged them and secured the player's signature.
Rodri has since been unveiled as a Barça player and, ideally, everyone should have moved on from whatever happened before.
However, the Spaniard's decision to join Barcelona instead of Madrid continues to generate reactions from the Spanish capital.
Speaking in the mixed zone after the Espanyol game (h/t Diario AS), Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was asked about Rodri and offered a rather blunt response.

Real Madrid kicked off their new campaign with a win last night against Espanyol, but it was anything but comfortable.
Jose Mourinho's side were made to suffer in Barcelona against a spirited Espanyol side who came out all guns blazing to punish Los Blancos' shaky defence.
It was a special night in some senses as the likes of Marc Cucurella, Yan Diomande, Bernardo Silva, Carlos Espi and Ibrahima Konate all made their official debuts.
Yet, it was also a night that showed that there is still a long way to go before Mourinho's effects can be seen in the squad. After all, there was not much to celebrate on the night beyond the debuts and a few solid showings.
Madrid Universal brings you three takeaways from Espanyol 1-2 Real Madrid.

The Open Thread/Daily Merengue is a place where you can discuss anything and everything related to football. Feel free to discuss the topics presented here, or start your very own discussions! The Open thread will be posted every day by one of the mods you'd totally go swimming with: Valyrian Steel, Felipejack, Kung_Fu_Zizou (AKA KFZ), Juninho, Ezek and, of course… yours truly.
Well well well… Los Blancos come away with a win—a hard fought one at that. Espi is gonna be front page, due to … well, being the savior.
Now, this isn 't quite usual for me, but here it is: I'm already aboard the Espi hype train.
Shifting our focus to a player outside of yesterday's protagonists…
I feel for Trent— I really do. Man's got a point to prove despite being a bonafide superstar of the game. This treatment, as described, is …just bad; low level. We know who he can be and I do believe in the man. Hopefully, he'll be closing mouths this seasons.

The Rebaño once again showcased the qualities that have defined Gabriel Milito's project, crushing Xolos 5-2 at Estadio AKRON with a top-to-bottom performance in every aspect of the game. Chivas moved to 10 points in the standings, placing themselves near the top of the table.
Alongside the clinical finishing with which the Rojiblancos put the game away, Guadalajara dominated proceedings from start to finish. A combination of collective effort, high-level combinations, aggression and attacking initiative shaped the emphatic victory.
Camberos and Sandoval constantly active on the wings, Marín mobile and clinical, Alvarado finding ******* es to receive and create chances, and a virtually impenetrable back line were the highlights of a Chivas side that showed it is getting closer to its best version. Even with Xolos scoring twice late on—more through sheer determination than sustained play—the Rebaño's victory left Chiva Nation, which packed the AKRON, with plenty to celebrate.
Guadalajara's next challenge will be Pachuca, away at Estadio Hidalgo on Saturday, August 29, at 5 PM.

Real Madrid head coach Jose Mourinho said that we live in an era of "bullying" when it comes to his winger Vinicius Jr.
Real Madrid head coach Jose Mourinho accused the general public of "bullying" when it comes to his winger Vinicius Jr.
Many felt that Vinicius should have been booked for a diving incident when trying to win a penalty during a 2-1 win against Espanyol.
Goals from Jude Bellingham and Carlos Espi were enough to earn three points in Mourinho's second La Liga debut as Los Blancos boss. But he stuck up for his charge as is often the Mourinho way even if his players have done wrong.
"I have the risk that you go back months and dig my words up from when I was Vini's opponent," Mourinho said, in reference to a racism incident in the Champions League when the Portuguese managed Benfica last season.

A new hero established himself in the colours of Real Madrid late on Saturday evening. This came as Los Blancos battled their way to a last-gasp victory away at Espanyol.
Los Blancos got their La Liga campaign up and running a short time ago, making the trip to Catalunya for the first competitive fixture of José Mourinho's new tenure.
As proceedings rolled into injury time, the visitors looked set to be forced to make do with a disappointing share of the spoils, after Jude Bellingham's early opener was cancelled out by Álex Calatrava.
Just when he was needed most, though, a somewhat unexpected hero emerged for a star-studded Real Madrid squad…
After pouncing on a loose ball on the Espanyol penalty area, Carlos Espí, fresh off a summer move from Levante, showed impressive composure to set himself up before slotting home a confident right-footed finish.

Jude always leading the way!
Real Madrid's first match of the season under Mourinho, with Mbappé and Bellingham, was highly anticipated.
It got off to the best possible start with a goal from the English midfielder after 9 minutes, once again showing how strong he is in the air.
And yet, a few minutes later, Real were caught out by Calatrava (30th), and have been struggling against Espanyol ever since.
Dimitrovic's saves and the post, from a Valverde strike, have kept Los Blancos from claiming the expected win, while a draw could already spark frustration among the fans!

Armando 'Hormiga' González's story with Chivas began long before his goals at Estadio AKRON. In 2018, at just 15 years old, he joined Guadalajara's youth academy with the U-15 side, inspired in part by his family history: his father, Armando González Bejarano, had also worn the Rojiblanco jersey and passed down his love for these colors from an early age.
That was the beginning of a journey that would see the young 'Hormiga', who grew up surrounded by stories of the Rebaño, create a few of his own within the club.
His path through the Rojiblanco Academy took him through several age groups and was highlighted by multiple achievements. He won championships with Chivas at U-15 and U-17 level before enjoying one of his best tournaments in the Apertura 2023 with the U-23 side.
That season, he won the Golden Boot with 13 goals during the regular season and played a key role in helping the Rebañolift the U-23 ******* le, scoring five more goals in the playoffs, including the opening goal in the final against Tigres. Earlier, on November 18, 2020, he had taken his first steps in professional soccer with Tapatío in Liga de Expansión MX.
On January 13, 2024, the moment arrived for Armando to officially wear the First Team jersey and make his Liga MX debut. That afternoon, he came on as a substitute in the 84th minute against Santos Laguna in Matchday 1 of the Clausura 2024. From that point on, he began turning everything he had learned throughout the years into goals, prominence and moments that would remain in the memory of the Rojiblanco faithful.

There is no doubt that Real Madrid have had a very exciting summer transfer window, with the addition of up to six new players, and also the return of Jose Mourinho as the team's head coach. However, one aspect that might leave some of the fans not fully satisfied is the lack of reinforcements in the midfield.
The Merengues have signed a highly experienced and reliable midfielder in Bernardo Silva, but as Mourinho himself put it in a recent press conference, the signing of Rodri Hernandez, who ultimately decided to sign for Barcelona, would have been the icing on the cake.
Although Los Blancos were unable to land the World Cup MVP, they might still land another midfielder, albeit one who is significantly far below the level of the former Manchester City star for now, before the transfer window closes.
This possible signing is the Racing Club midfielder Sergio Martinez, who recently made his debut in La Liga and has been linked with Real Madrid in recent days. He has been enjoying interest from other clubs as well, including from Barcelona, Villarreal, and Atletico Madrid, but according to Diario AS, has decided to sign for the Merengue club, despite them offering him only a reserve team place for now.
The report claims that the move can be finalized after Martinez plays the La Liga game between Racing and Getafe this weekend. In his first game in the top division, he scored a wonderful goal that turned out to be the goal of the Matchday 1.

It has been a gala summer for Real Madrid in terms of youth player sales, both directly from the Castilla and in terms of indirect profits from external transfers.
All in all, the club have pocketed over €200 million from player sales this summer, and a massive part of that has arrived from departures of academy stars.
The most recent operation finalised was the departure of Jacobo Ortega who left for Strasbourg, and Sergio Arribas is also said to be nearing a big-money move.
Now, Defensa Central highlights another young player who could enter the same situation.
As relayed by the Spanish outlet, former Real Madrid player and current Celta Vigo star Javi Rueda is nearing a departure from the club, and Los Blancos continue to hold a promising stake.

Expectations at Real Madrid could hardly be higher heading into Jose Mourinho's first season back in charge, given the kind of signings they have made.
That, coupled with the fact that the serial winner is back in charge, means a lot is expected of Los Blancos this campaign.
According to Mario Cortegana of The Athletic, both the coach and the club are convinced the squad are capable of fighting on every front this season.
The message from inside Valdebebas is one of confidence rather than transition.
Despite the significant changes made this summer, Real Madrid believe Mourinho already has the resources required to challenge immediately.

Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho says it will be hard to find the "perfect set-up" to fit Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr and Jude Bellingham into the same team, but insists the trio are not "incompatible".
After last season was overshadowed by chaos, amid fan unrest and allegations of players fighting at the Bernabeu, Mourinho will need all three of his stars if Los Blancos want to reclaim the Spanish **** le from a Barcelona team who have won the past two.
However, the 63‑year‑old, whose return to Real for a second stint in charge was confirmed in June, admitted he faces a "difficult" task in fitting all three players into the same starting eleven.
Speaking to the media before Real's La Liga opener against Espanyol on Saturday, Mourinho said: "They are incredible players and incredible players want to play with incredible players. Top players have frustration when they play with teammates who are not top.
"The best want to play with the best. After the tactical adjustments, it might be a little bit more difficult," he added.

Real Madrid have spent much of the summer focusing on signings for the first team but have now pivoted towards sales in Castilla.
The club's academy is filled with talented players who need regular game time in the upcoming seasons to aid their development.
Los Blancos' first team is absolutely stacked, and such players will have to move elsewhere to try to build a career for themselves.
Now, according to Arancha Rodriguez, 22-year-old midfielder Manuel Angel appears to be on the verge of leaving the club, with a move to Almeria on the cards.
The young midfielder is "one step away" from joining the Andalusian side. Only the final details remain before the deal is completed.

Real Madrid have made as many as six signings this summer transfer window, but they could still focus on a few more additions in the final weeks.
It has been made very clear that the only way Los Blancos will be able to reinforce the team is if they make sales.
Should they manage to part ways with a few fringe players, Jose Mourinho's preference would be to look at a new midfielder and a central defender.
Now, according to Ben Fernandes Santos, Los Blancos have shown serious interest in Porto midfielder Victor Froholdt, with Jose said to be a strong admirer.
Real Madrid are closely following the 20-year-old Dane and continue to ***** s whether a move is feasible before the end of the window.

One of the first signings that Real Madrid made at the beginning of the summer transfer window was agreeing a deal with Inter Milan to sign Denzel Dumfries.
Although the signing was not officially announced until after the Netherlands' World Cup campaign, he was one of Madrid's first bets for the new project.
Los Blancos had seen Dani Carvajal leave at the end of last season and needed a right-back for the vacant slot.
The club already had Trent Alexander-Arnold in that position, but the Englishman had endured a difficult first season in Spain.
Now, according to Mario Cortegana on the Athletic, the 30-year-old has a good chance of making Jose Mourinho's starting XI in the league opener despite being signed primarily to compete with Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Real Madrid already have a very talented squad at their disposal, filled with superstars, but they are constantly on the lookout for market opportunities.
Los Blancos want to make the kind of signings where they are ahead of the curve and sign a player before his potential explodes.
Madrid well and truly have seen how a player's price can skyrocket after just one good season, as has been the case with Yan Diomande this summer.
The Ivory Coast winger was in La Liga at Leganes less than a season and a half ago, and had Madrid signed him then, they might have saved a lot of money.
Thus, it comes as no surprise to see them interested in a player like Sergio Martinez, who is playing for newly promoted Racing Santander.

Santiago Sandoval could not have asked for a better return to Chivas' first-team setup. After an impressive run with the Mexico U-20 National Team at the CONCACAF U-20 Championship, the Rojiblanco academy product returned to the squad with the same confidence, talent and ability to make a difference that have made him one of Guadalajara's most promising young players.
Most importantly, his return has gone beyond simply making a good impression. In his last 2 appearances, Sandoval has directly contributed to Chivas' victories, proving that he is a player capable of changing the course of a match even when coming off the bench.
His return came in the final match of the Leagues Cup against Seattle Sounders. He came on as a substitute and, with only a few minutes on the pitch, found himself inside the box to connect with a header and score the goal that ultimately proved decisive in Chivas' victory.
But if that performance was the first glimpse of his impact after returning from the U-20 Championship, what happened against Santos Laguna confirmed that it was no coincidence. In Matchweek 4 of the Apertura 2026, Sandoval came on in the 53rd minute and once again needed very little time to become a key figure. He was active throughout his time on the pitch and created dangerous situations, eventually winning the penalty that led to the goal with which Guadalajara defeated Los Guerreros 0-1.
2 matches, 2 wins and 2 different ways of making an impact. Against Seattle, with a goal. Against Santos, through his movement, his reading of the game and an individual play that ultimately led to the decisive penalty.
