Melissa Gilbert mourned the deaths of former child stars Hayden Panettiere, Daveigh Chase, and Michelle Trachtenberg: "Tragically, heartbreakingly, agonizingly too soon."
The actress partially blames smartphones for the hostile environment facing young celebrities: "Now everyone is a paparazzo. There is no privacy."
She argued that Hollywood should "establish accessible free mental health support for all child actors as they transition into young adulthood."
Melissa Gilbert is calling for systemic change after the death of Hayden Panettiere.
The Little House on the Prairie alum penned a Substack essay reflecting on the Heroes star's tragic death at 36, along with other former child stars who have died within the last 18 months.

Sydney Sweeney channelled one of television's most iconic superheroes as she slipped into a plunging Wonder Woman costume for a fun-filled getaway with boyfriend Scooter Braun.
The Euphoria star, 28, looked sensational in the strapless red, blue and gold ensemble, which appeared to take its inspiration from the costume worn by Lynda Carter in the classic 1970s television series.
Sydney completed her transformation with Wonder Woman's signature gold tiara, metallic cuffs and knee-high red boots, wearing her blonde hair loose around her shoulders.
Sydney looked amazing as Wonder Woman (@ Sydney Sweeney/Instagram)
Scooter, 45, joined in the fun by dressing as Superman in a skintight blue unitard emblazoned with the superhero's unmistakable red and yellow emblem. The music mogul posed proudly alongside Sydney as the couple showed off their coordinating DC Comics costumes.

A new hero established himself in the colours of Real Madrid late on Saturday evening. This came as Los Blancos battled their way to a last-gasp victory away at Espanyol.
Los Blancos got their La Liga campaign up and running a short time ago, making the trip to Catalunya for the first competitive fixture of José Mourinho's new tenure.
As proceedings rolled into injury time, the visitors looked set to be forced to make do with a disappointing share of the spoils, after Jude Bellingham's early opener was cancelled out by Álex Calatrava.
Just when he was needed most, though, a somewhat unexpected hero emerged for a star-studded Real Madrid squad…
After pouncing on a loose ball on the Espanyol penalty area, Carlos Espí, fresh off a summer move from Levante, showed impressive composure to set himself up before slotting home a confident right-footed finish.

Fan were hit hard when it was announced that actress Hayden Panettiere died at age at just 36 years old. Since then Ice Princess has been trending, as well as her iconic roles in projects like Heroes, Nashville, and the Scream movies (the latter of which are streaming with a Paramount+ subscription). But her interviews have also resurfaced, and I keep watching one where she talks about beauty and self-acceptance. Let's break it all down.
Ever since her passing, folks have been reminiscing about the late actor's acting legacy, as well as how Hollywood treated Panettiere. But tales about her talents and spirit are also trickling out, and People recently posted a clip from back in 2009 where Hayden spoke about self-acceptance. In her words:
I heard a saying once that really helped me. It was 'beauty's an opinion, not a fact.' And just to keep that in mind always helped me. And personally, I think the most beautiful things about people are their flaws. Isn't it a Natasha Bedingfield song 'A face without freckles is like a sky without the stars'?

Hayden Panettiere starred in memorable '90s commercials for brands like Wendy's, Hershey's and Banana Nut Crunch cereal
Her first commercial appearance was as an infant in a Playskool commercial before landing roles on Guiding Light and Heroes
Panettiere's family confirmed her death at age 36, calling her an "incredible light" who brought joy to many
Hayden Panettiere will be remembered best for acting roles like Nashville and Heroes, but before that, she starred in a handful of iconic commercials in the '90s.
One of Panettiere's earliest commercials was for Wendy's, showcasing the fast-food chain's 99-cent five-piece nugget deal. The 1996 commercial shows a young Panettiere sitting with her "brother's" meal after promising him she'd look after it.

In the months before her death at age 36, Hayden Panettiere took serious steps to protect herself from her on-again, off-again boyfriend Brian Hickerson, including hiring private security to keep him away.
The "Heroes" actress was found unresponsive on August 16 but had reportedly reconnected with Hickerson earlier this year when he claimed he needed a place to stay.
A close source has now shared that what began as a temporary arrangement escalated when Brian Hickerson allegedly tried to stay indefinitely and was found to be surveilling Hayden Panettiere.

The late actress, according to an insider, was forced to employ private security to remove Hickerson from her Los Angeles home after he re-entered her life earlier this year and refused to leave.

Best known for her roles in "Heroes," "Nashville," and the "Scream" movie franchise, many fans took to social media to pay tribute to the beloved actress, who was open with her struggles with mental health and addiction.
A doctor once warned her that she could be "dead within five years" if she didn't get her drinking under control, but she was determined to "leave the world" a better place in final remarks made before her sudden death.
According to the autopsy report, no signs of trauma were found that would have contributed to her death, although 911 dispatch audio said a female was in "cardiac arrest." The dispatch audio reportedly referenced a possible overdose.

Three months before her death, Hayden Panettiere was publicly revisiting her past in an attempt to also look ahead.
After spending more than three decades onscreen in film and TV projects like "Nashville," "Heroes" and "Remember the ******* ans," Panettiere had plenty of stories to tell. And in her memoir, "This Is Me: A Reckoning," she didn't hold back.
In interviews and the book itself, she candidly shared what it was like growing up in Hollywood, becoming a mother, enduring an abusive relationship, battling addiction, and most painful of all, giving up custody of her daughter.
And after years marked by personal loss and public struggles, all the time she spent taking stock of what she'd endured, she was looking forward.
"I feel like I have a lot more life to live," she told podcast host Jay Shetty.

On Thursday, Fox News posted a preview of Enes Kanter Freedom's interview on "My View With Lara Trump," where he commented on Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham. In this snippet, Freedom praised Cunningham for voicing her opinion that biological men should not compete in women's sports.
"First of all, I want to say she's an American hero. Everywhere she goes, I see now a lot of people are coming out and actually defending her."
Freedom referenced fan rallies held in cities like Seattle and Minneapolis. With the Fever coming to town for scheduled WNBA games, Cunningham's supporters staged gatherings to express their support for her stance on transgender athletes in women's sports.
Though Freedom acknowledged that Cunningham has drawn criticism, he hailed her as a role model for young women.
"Obviously, if you're standing up for something that you believe, you're going to get hate all the time. But I think she's inspiring not only the players in the WNBA, but girls from all over the world."

Over the course of the 2026 season, the Boston Red Sox have been arguably the MLB's premier story, as one of the best examples of a zero-to-hero team in the past few years.
Boston started as one of the worst teams in baseball, and are now one of its best; all thanks to a legendary winning streak, from late July to early August.
Now, Boston has stumbled a bit in the past couple weeks, but that electric offense that started the streak is still here, and better than ever.

Following Hayden Panettiere's shocking death, fans are resurfacing some of the career revelations she shared in her final months, including her allegation that Neutrogena attempted to end their longtime partnership after she spoke publicly about her postpartum depression.
Now, the brand is speaking out.
In her 2026 memoir "This Is Me: A Reckoning" and interviews promoting the book in May, the 36-year-old said the cosmetics brand, owned by Kenvue, wanted to "fire" her after she shed light on her condition on "Live with Kelly and Michael" in 2015, less than a year after she gave birth to her daughter, Kaya.
Panettiere's comments drew backlash in May from social media users – including one beauty content creator who declared "Neutrogena hates women!" – and criticism of the brand saw renewed fervor after the "Heroes" actress died at age 36 on Aug. 16. One Reddit post, which earned more than 2,500 upvotes, proposed a boycott against Neutrogena. Comments under another post mirrored this sentiment, with one user calling Panettiere's commercials a "core memory" for millennials.
The drama, explained: Will a Neutrogena boycott by Hayden Panettiere's fans work?

Hayden Panettiere's former fiancé Wladimir Klitschko has honoured the late actress on what would have been her 37th birthday.
The Ukrainian heavyweight champion, who is the father of the late star's 11-year-old daughter Kaya, shared a photo of the Heroes actress on Instagram on Friday and wrote a heartfelt tribute to his ex.
"Instead of celebrating the way we had planned, today we celebrate her life, her spirit, and the love she brought into this world," he wrote.
"I want to thank all of Hayden's fans, friends, and everyone who has reached out for the incredible outpouring of love and support. At a time filled with so much sadness, your kindness has reminded me that there is still so much good in humanity."
The retired boxer then encouraged his followers to be kind to others and lead with love instead of hate.
"If you're reading this, I ask just one thing: even if only for a moment, think about LOVE. Reach out to a friend. Forgive someone. Be kind," he continued. "Love is a superpower. Use it."

For decades, Natalie Portman has been one of our most cerebral stars. A 1999 Vanity Fair cover, promoting "The Phantom Menace," asked whether the then-17-year-old might "choose Harvard over Hollywood." She managed to do both, earning an Ivy League degree and an Oscar. Her characters in movies from "Jackie" to "May December" are often overthinkers, and her Instagram book club picks tend toward high literature.
Who better, then, to serve as the heroine of a Rachel Cusk novel?
Cusk, the experimental novelist, is set to publish "Life of M," about an unnamed actress coping with feelings of alienation and depersonalization, on Aug. 25. Cusk's work, like the well-loved "Outline" trilogy, favors deep excavation of inner turmoil over what might be called "plot," and "Life of M" is no exception. Still, the obvious similarities to the known facts of Portman's life have earned the book plenty of buzz.
To wit: M, a former child star who received her greatest acclaim for playing a ballerina, is raising children, seemingly solo, in Paris. All of this checks out, and Portman's putative connection to Cusk — she selected Cusk's last novel, 2024's "Parade," for Natalie's Book Club, and both actress and author live in Paris — lends the enterprise a juicy overlay of gossip.
There's no public information indicating Portman's involvement in the project, or whether she approved it at all. (Portman's rep and the book's publicist at Farrar, Straus and Giroux did not respond to requests for comment.) And if people are reading "Life of M" as a document of truth, it may be in part because the novel so confidently places its reader within restricted access zones. We see M through the eyes of a narrator, an unnamed person who has obtained M's permission to document her life. And so we accompany M to a spa, where she and a younger actress chitchat about their peers and discuss Hollywood's gender pay gap, and to an interview at a chic restaurant, where she observes strangers snapping her picture. The access Cusk grants extends deep into M's mind as well: With her friend, M ponders how she might help a new generation of actresses despite her own "ennui" about the industry; with the journalist interviewing her, M is burdened "by the impossibility of anyone ever understanding what she is."
The project of this book is to help us to know a person who rejects examination, just as journalists have struggled to crack Portman, who avoids discussing her personal life in interviews. "Life of M" is not the sort of novel that one can "spoil," but suffice it to say that M ultimately makes her displeasure at the narrator's project plain: Being under a writer's gaze is, for her, intolerable. M comes by this aversion to fame honestly. We're informed that "starring in a film as a child had immediately brought her childhood to an end," and that press coverage of her entanglements as an adult have strained her relationship with her family. Hayden Panettiere reportedly took extra precautions to protect herself after her on-and-off boyfriend Brian Hickerson returned to her life.
According to a source who spoke with Us Weekly, the actress hired private security after Hickerson allegedly refused to leave her home during a temporary stay earlier this year.
The source claimed that Hickerson told Panettiere he needed somewhere to stay because he had no money and blamed his past criminal charges on her. She reportedly allowed him to stay temporarily, but he allegedly refused to leave.
"He would always take advantage of her and wouldn't leave, so she hired private security to not only remove him, but to keep him away from her," the source told Us Weekly.
The source further claimed that the Heroes star discovered Hickerson had allegedly installed cameras inside her home. Her building's homeowners ****** ociation also reportedly warned residents about him, according to the source.

Jack Coleman is remembering Hayden Panettiere not only as the actress who played his daughter on Heroes, but as a teenager whose extraordinary talent and rapid rise to fame exposed her to pressures he believes no young performer should have faced.
Coleman, who played Noah Bennet opposite Panettiere's Claire Bennet on the NBC drama, shared an emotional tribute after her death at 36. He recalled meeting her while filming the Heroes pilot, when she greeted him by shouting "daddy" and throwing her arms around him.
That first meeting became the start of an affectionate offscreen relationship. Panettiere called Coleman "daddio," while he nicknamed her "Haydini" because, as he put it, "she was a magician," according to Entertainment Weekly's report on his tribute.
But Coleman's memories also turned to the darker side of Panettiere's rise. He described watching a 16-year-old become the target of invasive photographers and provocative questions as her public profile exploded, leaving him with anger over how little protection she received.
Coleman said he recognized Panettiere's unusual ability almost immediately. During an early scene, he noticed that a tear rolled down her cheek on exactly the same line through repeated takes. He complimented what he ****** umed was an impressive acting technique.

Neutrogena has responded after comments from late actress Hayden Panettiere resurfaced, in which she claimed the brand ended their decade-long partnership after she spoke publicly about her experience with postpartum depression.
In the wake of Panettiere's untimely death at age 36 on Aug. 16, Neutrogena has been subject to widespread backlash and calls for a consumer boycott. On Thursday, Aug. 20, it issued a statement saying it was "deeply saddened" by her passing.
"For more than a decade, Hayden was a valued member of our Neutrogena community. We are proud to have partnered with her and understand that we made her feel unsupported during a very difficult time. This is not what Neutrogena stands for or who we want to be."
"Hayden's courage in sharing her challenges helped inspire important conversations and awareness," the statement continued. "We are making a significant investment in a long-standing community health partner to help give more women access to the support they need, including care for postpartum depression. We will share more details with this community when plans are in place."
Panettiere-who first rose to fame on NBC's Heroes-started working with Neutrogena in the mid-2000s.

Representatives for the beauty brand Neutrogena have broken their silence about their treatment of their former ambassador Hayden Panettiere following her death.
While promoting her memoir earlier this year, the Heroes actress claimed that Neutrogena dropped her as their brand ambassador after 10 years in 2015 because she spoke about her postpartum depression battle on a U.S. talk show.
The allegations resurfaced this week after Panettiere died on Sunday, prompting backlash against the company, which saw its stock spiral amid a fan boycott.
Addressing the uproar on social media on Thursday, reps for Neutrogena acknowledged that they made her feel "unsupported" while she was struggling.

They praised Panettiere's "courage" in speaking out about a taboo subject and vowed to make a "significant investment to a long-standing community health partner" to support women's health causes, including postpartum depression.

Chad Dillard of Bernstein said in a recent program on CNBC that Quanta Services (NYSE:PWR) is an "800-pound gorilla" in high-voltage transmission lines. He was responding to a CNBC host who asked him to discuss "AI plays in disguise" beyond the major names everyone is aware of.
"I think we need to focus on what the bottlenecks are, right? It's power and labor," Dillard said. "On the power side, like you just said, you know, Caterpillar, it's an obvious one, power generation. But there's also another way to improve power, and that's by raising the voltage. And I'm talking about high voltage transmission lines. I'm talking about raising the voltage in data centers. ( Quanta Services) They're an 800-lb gorilla basically in the room."
Quanta Services (NYSE:PWR) can benefit from the coming wave of AI-related power demand because it's one of the few companies big enough to do the actual building when utilities spend money to expand and upgrade the grid. Quanta makes money by constructing the power lines, substations, and grid infrastructure the US needs, work that puts it right in the middle of the buildout.
In the recent quarter, revenue jumped about 40% year over year, and the company raised its full-year guidance for revenue, earnings per share, and cash flow.
Bulls also point to Quanta's recent acquisitions: Phalcon, Enerfab, Percheron, and PSD. Quanta expects these deals to add roughly 3 to 4% to its revenue in 2026. The bull case is that these purchases add skilled workers, fabrication capacity, and permitting support, giving Quanta more control over the bottlenecks that slow projects down.

European experience might not be everything in MLS, but it goes far when it comes to player ratings for EA Sports FC 27.
Lionel Messi is the top-rated MLS player with an 89 overall, the game-makers revealed on their official channels, but he's closely followed by a pair of players who arrived in MLS this summer - both of whom, like Messi, played for FC Barcelona in their standout careers.
Robert Lewandowski, the Polish forward who joined the Chicago Fire this summer, and Orlando City signing Antoine Griezmann, who joined from Atlético Madrid on a free transfer, both are rated 84 overall.
The respect for new arrivals with experience in Europe doesn't end there. Next on the list is Casemiro, the Brazilian midfielder who became Messi's Inter Miami teammate this summer after four seasons with Manchester United and a decade with Real Madrid before that.
Casemiro is an 83 overall, as is Rodrigo De Paul, another member of Inter Miami who joined the club after Messi moved across the Atlantic to suit up for the Herons.

So the most anticipated sports season in Bloomington is about to begin — football.
I am still amazed that not only is that a sentence that got typed, it is a true sentence as well. The Indiana Hoosiers are the NCAA national champions and that can not be taken away from them. It wasn't an anomaly, it wasn't a fluke and they have to be respected for it.
I am not an IU fan (my Boiler fandom now follows me like the black cloud that followed Pigpen from Peanuts) — and all the skullduggery leads to the very same place – IU just completed the greatest season in college football history.
The rest of college sports now has to live with IU football at the top of the heap and the rest of us who call West Lafayette our safe ****** e now have to endure the fact that the last two undefeated National Champions in football and basketball reside about 300 yards from each other on Fee Lane.
Last year was a Disney movie whose script wrote itself except that would be trite and barely contain a narrative of the heroics of that statue. With heroes straight out of Homer, and a quest even more farfetched, Fernando Mendoza and Curt Cignetti became a modern Ulyesses and Achilles, and even Ohio State and Miami couldn't provide a suitable villain.

The new season promises to be one of both little steps and giant steps for David Brooks.
The 29-year-old midfielder will come up against childhood hero Cristiano Ronaldo with Wales in the Nations League before making his European debut with Bournemouth in the Europa League.
At the same time, and more importantly, Brooks and wife Flora are getting ready for their daughter Lottie's first steps.
"She's crawling now and standing up. I'm getting my steps in when I get home," Brooks said.
"Things have changed from the first couple of months after she was born where you're frightened to do anything.

Hayden Panettiere, known to many of us as the cheerleader who couldn't be broken on Heroes and the country western star who came apart on Nashville, died this week in her South Carolina home at the age of 36. She left behind an eleven-year-old daughter called Kaya. Her cause of death is not yet known.
The public response to her death has followed a familiar refrain: the tragic trajectory of a child star whose bright light cast longer shadows. But Panettiere's story is also one of a young woman who fought hard to reclaim her narrative, and was willing to drag the darkest parts of it into the light, even when doing so made people uncomfortable.
Her 2026 memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, detailed a near-death labor and postpartum psychological spiral, an opioid and alcohol addiction that predated her daughter's birth by more than a decade, and the very difficult decision to give her daughter's father, former heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, full custody of their daughter in 2018. It was a story that gave a voice to a subject and a stigma that so many women have been unable to face openly for fear of shame, judgment and retribution. And perhaps that makes her sudden death all the more tragic, and opens up an important question that deserves to be confronted: what, exactly, do we mean when we say "good mother"?

Neutrogena is facing a boycott and swarms of social media backlash over a story from Hayden Panettiere that has resurfaced after her sudden death at 36.
The Heroes star, who was the face of the popular skincare brand for about 10 years, said in her 2026 memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning that Neutrogena severed ties with her after she spoke publicly about receiving mental health treatment for postpartum depression following the birth of her daughter, Kaya, in 2014.
Panettiere alleged that her contract with the company was canceled because she revealed her PPD diagnosis on Live! with Kelly and Michael in 2015, explaining in her memoir: "Neutrogena canceled my long-standing contract, and it was yet another blow in a year that had given almost nothing else."
Upon the release of the memoir in May, the comments sparked online criticism of Neutrogena, but the brand is now facing renewed backlash after Panettiere died Sunday in Greenville, South Carolina.
One Reddit post, which has more than 5,000 upvotes, proposed a boycott against the company in honor of Panettiere. The comments echoed that attitude, with users vowing to never buy products from the company again.
