With the Yankees looking to track down the Rays in the AL East while also maintaining the cushion they have on the Red Sox, this interleague matchup against the Rockies was a couple of must win games. Colorado is closing in on 100 losses and is as beatable an opponent as there is right now, sorry to them. Well so far, so good for the Yankees as they've taken the first two games of the series. Tonight, they'll go for the sweep.
To try and accomplish that sweep, the Yankees will give the ball to Max Fried. This will be Fried's third start since returning from the IL, and he's been decent enough so far, allowing two runs in 9.1 combined innings. He still hasn't gone over 72 pitches yet, so it's still unlikely that he'll be airing it out for 100 or anything tonight, but we'll see.
As for the rest of the lineup, the big news is the return of Anthony Volpe. With Jazz Chisholm Jr. going on the IL, Volpe has been recalled and will play second base. He has been hitting decently since getting sent back to the minors, so we'll see if there's any correlation now that he's back in the bigs. Aaron Judge will get a planned day off, his first since being reinstated from the IL on Tuesday as Aaron Boone will take it slow with his superstar outfielder especially after Judge returned without a rehab ***** ignment. Jasson Domínguez will start in right field instead and bat third, flanked by Cody Bellinger and Luis García Jr.
Meanwhile, Ryan Feltner will take the mound for the Rockies. Feltner has a 5.91 ERA and a 5.27 FIP in his 106.2 innings on the season. The 30-year-old right-hander was having a decent year by Rockies pitchers standards until about mid-July, when a 2.1 inning eight-run disaster outing against Cincinnati ballooned his ERA north of five and he's stayed there ever since. His latest start was a mediocre one, where he lasted five innings and gave up four runs to the Cardinals, but he's got some seven-run outings in recent memory as the Dodgers and Nationals took him to task a couple of weeks ago.

The numbers have reached a scale that markets can no longer ignore. The U.S. fiscal deficit jumped to $432 billion in July alone, the biggest monthly shortfall since early 2021, pushing the year-to-date gap to nearly $1.8 trillion, with the full-year deficit expected to approach $2 trillion. The national debt is nearing the $40 trillion milestone, and the cost of financing it has ballooned to roughly $1.2 trillion so far this year, on pace for about $1.37 trillion for the full fiscal year.
The result has been a sharp move higher in long-term Treasury yields. The 30-year bond hit 5.33% in mid-August — its highest level in 19 years — while the 10-year note pushed toward 4.75%, a 20-month high before the Treasury stepped in this week to announce increased buying of longer dated bonds. Bond strategists point to a combination of forces for the recent high: mounting deficit concerns, inflation still stuck above the Fed's 2% target, and a wave of corporate debt issuance competing with Treasurys for investor cash. Some are calling it the return of the "bond vigilantes" — investors demanding higher yields to keep funding a government that keeps borrowing more.
Because bond prices move opposite to yields, when yields rise, existing bonds — which pay lower fixed rates — become less valuable, so their prices fall. And the longer a bond's maturity (its duration), the more its price drops for a given rise in yields. A 25 basis point rise in long-term yields can translate to roughly a 4% price loss in a long-duration bond fund.
That's why the debt story is fundamentally an ETF story. The funds holding long-dated Treasurys were absorbing the full force of the yield spike, while short-duration and alternative funds are becoming the market's refuge. While yields have since retreated post-Treasury announcement and there is a potential for a surge in buying 20+ year bond ETFs, the longer term impact to long-dated bonds remains to seen.
TLT is ground zero for the debt-and-yields story. As the most popular long-duration Treasury ETF, it holds bonds with 20+ years to maturity — exactly the part of the curve recently hammered as the 30-year yield hit multi-decade highs. TLT has slumped into a correction and touched a 22-year low in August, and investors have pulled more than $4.4 billion out of the fund this year. Strikingly, even a near-5% yield wasn't enough to stem the slide: the price losses from rising rates have overwhelmed the income the fund pays. TLT is the clearest example of how duration risk works against investors when the government's borrowing costs climb.

On August 17, Google, a unit of Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL), agreed to buy internal business data from bankrupt Spirit Airlines for $10 million, outbidding a $7.5 million offer from AI data company Mercor. The haul includes employee emails, Microsoft Teams messages, spreadsheets, calendars, and marketing and operations records, all to be stripped of customer information before the sale closes at a bankruptcy court hearing. It is a tiny deal by Alphabet's standards. But it says something about how aggressively the company is hunting for raw material to train its AI models.
Google Cloud revenue grew 82% year over year to $24.8 billion in the second quarter, accelerating from 63% growth in the first. That pace dwarfs the 43% growth Microsoft reported for Azure and the 37% growth Amazon posted for AWS over the same period. Google Cloud is still the smallest of the three in dollar terms, but its operating income more than tripled, from $2.8 billion to $8.8 billion, pushing its margin from about 21% to 36%. Its backlog reached $514 billion, roughly five years of work at the current pace, and Alphabet expects to recognize just over half of it as revenue within 24 months. CEO Sundar Pichai said nearly 90% of the Fortune 100 now use its Gemini Enterprise model, with existing customers exceeding their original commitments by more than 50%.
AI is reshaping the advertising side of the business too. Gemini is helping Alphabet find relevant ads for longer, harder-to-monetize searches, while a tool called AI Max uses AI to expand keyword matches and rewrite ad copy automatically. Management has credited AI Overviews and AI Mode with lifting search revenue by making results more relevant, all built on top of a Chrome browser with 68% global market share and a Google Search engine that holds 91%.
Alphabet's headline numbers are less impressive up close. The company reported net income of $112.2 billion on revenue of $119.8 billion in the second quarter, but $98 billion of that came from "other income," driven mainly by a $94.1 billion unrealized gain tied to its early stake in **** eX. Alphabet invested $900 million in **** eX back in 2015 for roughly 7.5% of the company, a position that ballooned in value after **** eX's June IPO priced shares at $135 and closed the quarter at $170.86. Strip that gain out and Alphabet's net income falls closer to $18 billion, which works out to a 35% year-over-year decline in earnings per share. Because the gain is unrealized, it rises and falls with **** eX's stock price and could reverse just as fast as it appeared.

By all accounts, it's been an absolutely brutal season for Mets pitcher Kodai Senga. And even when there was something to celebrate, it still didn't exactly go his way.
After a solid first three seasons in MLB and an All-Star appearance in 2023, Senga's numbers ballooned amid injuries this year. But despite his 8.12 ERA in 16 appearances, Senga had an opportunity to go for his first-career save on Monday against the first-place Braves.
Senga was able to pitch a scoreless ninth inning and record the save in the 8-5 win. But rookie teammate Carson Benge was seemingly unaware of the milestone for Senga. Instead of keeping the baseball for the pitcher, Benge threw the final out into the Truist Park stands.
Senga could only watch as that keepsake was lost for good.
Now, there could have been an effort to retrieve the baseball. But with it being the final out of a road game, it was nearly impossible to get someone out there in time to set up an exchange with the fan.

Things turned awfully testy during the late innings of Wednesday night's 4-2 Mariners victory over the Detroit Tigers, which evened the pivotal series for both teams in an American League playoff race that is heating up more and more with every passing day. A half-inning after Cal Raleigh was drilled in the ribs with 95 mph four-seam fastball by Enmanuel De Jesus — and no warnings were issued — Gabe Speier pegged Gleyber Torres with a 96 mph four-seamer of his own, leading to an exchanging of words and the benches clearing. Speier and Dan Wilson both ended up ejected. As Kate said in the recap, we'll see if this has any ramifications Thursday.

Zakelj and Okuayinonu joined DE Nick Bosa, linebacker Dre Greenlaw, defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa, OL Carver Willis, wide receiver Jacob Cowing, fullback Kyle Juszczyk, OL Brett Toth among the players who were new to the injury list before and during training camp Wednesday. That's on top of WR Mike Evans, WR Christian Kirk, WR De'Zhaun Stribling, RBs Kaelon Black and Jordan James, OL Vederian Lowe, DL Keion White and S Malik Mustapha all already sitting out practice with various injuries.
However, while the list of San Francisco's injured ballooned to 20 including the trio of players on the PUP list, ESPN's Nick Wagoner had a note that shows the injury situation might not be as bad as it looks on paper.

SpaceX (SPCX) reported second quarter results on Tuesday that topped estimates — its first report as a public company — which comes as the stock has been in a recent free fall. Rising capital expenditures in its Q2 report didn't help matters.
SpaceX's AI segment posted an operating loss of $1.26 billion versus estimates of $2.39 billion, but AI spending ballooned to $15.8 billion in the quarter, larger than expected and much higher than the $7.7 billion spent in Q1.

The Toronto Blue Jays seemed to signal the team was giving up on the 2026 MLB season when it traded away top starter Kevin Gausman on Sunday. Turns out, the team's decision is less a tear down, and more a re-tooling, especially after it acquired starter José Soriano in a deal with the Los Angels Angels on Monday.
Soriano, 27, has a 3.29 ERA over 123 innings. In exchange for Soriano, the Blue Jays gave up shortstop prospect Arjun Nimmala, outfielder Eddie MIcheletti Jr. and pitcher Angel Rivero.

On July 27, Atlanta Braves pitcher Connor Thomas recorded one of the worst outings of the season.
In 2.2 innings, Thomas allowed 10 hits, five walks, three home runs and 11 earned runs in total.
Before entering the game in the sixth inning, the game was tied 3-3. However, it quickly got out of hand as the New York Mets scored 11 unanswered runs en route to a 14-3 win over the Braves.
After being removed from the game in the eighth inning, the Mets broadcast team was sympathetic towards Thomas after reading his final line.
Because of this performance, Thomas' ERA ballooned to 21.32 for the season. This isn't a new thing for him either; in 2025 with the Milwaukee Brewers, Thomas had an ERA of 20.25 in two appearances.

Luis Castillo's tenure as a Seattle Mariner has apparently come to an end. The Mariners announced tonight they have traded Castillo to the White Sox in exchange for reliever Seranthony Dominguez, outfielder Nolan Jones, and catching prospect Boston Smith. Per Daniel Kramer, the Mariners aren't sending any money to offset the remainder of what Castillo is owed on the extension he signed in 2022, which runs through 2027 with a vesting option for 2028 if he reaches 180 innings.
In exchange, the Mariners will be absorbing Dominguez's not-insignificant salary for the remainder of this year and the next year of his contract, when he's slated to make $10.5M. Dominguez also has an option for 2028, but it's a mutual option (with a $2M buyout).
The 31-year-old Dominguez is on pace for the worst season of his career; he still collects strikeouts but his walk rate has ballooned over the past two seasons; he's currently walking over 14% of batters faced. Now 28, Jones has spent time in the bigs but never really latched on consistently (outside of one 2023 season where he seemed to put it all together for Colorado), mostly due to a monstrous K rate compounded by the length of his swing. He's been with the White Sox Triple-A team this season, blocked by the surprisingly good play at the big-league level, and will likely serve a similar role for Seattle as outfield depth at Tacoma.

Ford stock rose sharply on Wednesday morning after the Detroit automaker reported mixed second-quarter results and raised its full-year guidance, earning a quick upgrade to buy from Citi.

Once upon a time (although it wasn't just once), the Braves used Carlos Carrasco in a close game. Ronald Acuña Jr. got injured in that game and ended up missing about six weeks of play. The use of Carrasco turned sinister, the Braves lost that game, and then ended up mired in a funk that lasted for a good chunk of Acuña's absence.
Tonight, Ronald Acuña Jr. made his return to the lineup. It could have been a triumphant time, building on the Braves' recent strong run of results. Instead, amid some rain and another indifferent outing from Martin Perez, the Braves opted to insert Connor Thomas, the "last guy" in their bullpen, into a tie game. It went south almost immediately, and then it kind of ran out south to go, as the Mets just pummeled Thomas into oblivion. To the Braves' credit, they let Thomas wear it and didn't use another pitcher, avoiding a double-down mistake of using Thomas to save the rest of the bullpen but then not actually saving the rest of the bullpen. (Jorge Mateo got the last out in lieu of Thomas, after the score had ballooned to 14-3 in favor of the Mets.)
Before all that, though, the game was pretty cool. In his first major league PA in a while, Acuña fell behind 0-2 against Zac Thornton, battled back to 3-2, and then teed off on a pitch down the middle, knocking it 108 mph to center for a solid single. Drake Baldwin followed followed with a hard liner single of his own, and the Braves seemed to be in business. Unfortunately, Matt Olson hit into a double play, but Ozzie Albies, as part of a measure of personal revenge for possibly a career-worst game on Sunday, legged out an infield hit to plate his buddy for the first run of the game.

A hard-hit grounder went for a leadoff hit, and then Francisco Lindor got his arms extended on a cutter on the edge away and nearly hit it out of the park. The play ended up being kind of weird, as it looked like it was just going to be a double, but the ball bounced far enough off the wall that Lindor ended up getting an RBI triple. But, Perez pachinko also cuts the other way, as a grounder to third, a strikeout, and flyout to center kept the game tied at one run apiece.
Nothing much happened in the second or the top of the third. In the bottom half of the inning, after a leadoff single, Lindor again took a Perez pitch on the outer edge, this time a changeup, and pulled it into left for a two-run homer. Perez was hitting his spots, but it didn't matter. Like most college sports administrators, TCU athletic director Mike Buddie thinks there should be an enforceable salary cap for players in college sports.
But he doesn't think they should be the only ones.
"I think athletic directors should make a capped salary. I think coaches should make a capped salary," Buddie said during an interview with Front Office Sports. "And I think student-athletes should be in the room helping make these decisions."
In college football, coaching salaries—as well as coaching buyouts—have ballooned.
Currently, the highest-paid coaches are Indiana's Curt Cignetti, Georgia's Kirby Smart, and LSU's Lane Kiffin, whose annual salaries all exceed $13 million per year. Athletic directors don't make nearly as much, but—particularly in the power conferences—they can take home more than $1 million per year.

The Los Angeles Rams made a series of aggressive offseason trades to overhaul their defense, sending multiple first-round picks and rising young edge rusher Jared Verse to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for star pass rusher Myles Garrett, while also acquiring cornerback Trent McDuffie from Kansas City and signing free-agent corner Jaylen Watson.
The moves were clearly a direct response to how the Rams' defense unraveled in the playoffs, and ESPN's Ben Solak explains that the Garrett-for-Verse swap directly targets a finishing problem and opens up new avenues for defensive coordinator Chris Shula in 2026 and beyond.
A wonderful bull rusher, Verse often demolished the pocket and created pressure but was unable to finish his rushes under control. He has a career pressure-to-sack ratio of 8.4%, which is fourth worst among all edges over the past two seasons. Garrett's recent pressure-to-sack ratio was obviously ballooned by his record-setting season, but over his career, he has a 19.3% conversion rate -- more than double that of Verse.
Because Verse was such a wrecking ball, Shula would wisely use him as the crasher on stunts, twists and other defensive line games. With a runway into a tackle, Verse could break pocket integrity and flush out the quarterback, where a waiting looper or blitzer could clean him up. It was Shula's way of converting Verse's pressures into team sacks, as Verse couldn't easily convert them into individual sacks. With Garrett, Solak suggests Shula will lean into more straightforward four-man rush opportunities, often overloading the line away from Garrett to isolate him in one-on-one matchups. Still, Shula is expected to retain some stunt packages to maximize interior rushers like Byron Young and Kobie Turner, using Garrett's presence to draw extra blocking attention and open lanes elsewhere on the line.

Tesla shares sank about 7.5% on July 2, their worst single-day decline in nearly a year. The drop came even after the company reported second-quarter deliveries far above Wall Street's expectations.
The selloff came just three trading days after Tesla stock jumped more than 8% on optimism around a new self-driving software rollout.
Tesla reported 480,126 vehicle deliveries for the second quarter, against a company-compiled consensus of 406,024 and a StreetAccount estimate of 406,600. Production came in at 451,758 units.
The result marked a 25% jump from the same period last year. It also represented a 34% increase over the first quarter's 358,023 deliveries. Tesla also shipped more cars than it built, drawing down inventory that had ballooned earlier in the year.
Much of the setup traces back to June 29. Tesla shares posted their biggest single-day gain in over a year after the FSD v14 Lite update rolled out. The update reached older Hardware 3 vehicles for the first time in more than a year. That rally already reflected rising expectations for the delivery report itself.

Some of the college football preview magazines have hit the shelves, and one of the ones I like to leaf through -- and have for years -- is Lindy's Sports College Football preview. The annual magazine has been around for years, and you can pick up the 2026 edition on newsstands now. Yes, the physical magazines still exist, and it's good reading material to keep on your coffee table or other places people like to pick up things to read (you know where I'm going).
Ohio State lost a lot of talent to the NFL last year, and we've been making the rounds on some of the national media's perception of the Buckeyes heading into the fall, so why not check in with where Lindy's has the Buckeyes in its preseason rankings?

The cost to repaint the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has ballooned to more than $14.65 million -- exceeding the original estimated cost of the no-bid contract by more than $4 million, according to federal contract data.
In addition to the repainting by Atlantic Industrial Coatings, the National Park Service paid $1.74 million to Green Water Solutions, an Ohio-based company, earlier this year to install a "nano bubble" system to kill algae, using a similar no-bid contract to speed up the work in time for Fourth of July celebrations.
Between the two companies that received separate contracts for the resurfacing and filtration systems, the project is set to cost more than $16 million. The status of the payments to the contractors was not immediately available in the federal government's contract database.
The Interior Department said in a statement via X, "The advanced nanobubbler technology very effectively killed the algae that has plagued every Lincoln Reflecting Pool reopening—most infamously Obama's reopening—since 1922. The Reflecting Pool water is crystal clear, and our National Park Service team is now vacuuming up the dead algae resting on the bottom of some parts of the Reflecting Pool—just like the destroyed Iranian Navy resting on the bottom of the Persian Gulf."

NEW DELHI: Afghanistan missed a golden opportunity to dismiss the in-form Rishabh Pant on Day 2 of the one-off Test at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh.
The incident occurred in the 89th over of India's innings when Azmatullah Omarzai induced a loud caught-behind appeal against Pant. The umpire turned down the appeal, and while Afghanistan briefly discussed the possibility of a review, wicketkeeper Afsar Zazai appeared convinced there was no edge.
Trusting their wicketkeeper's judgement, Afghanistan decided against taking the DRS review.
However, replays later showed that the decision could have gone in Afghanistan's favour. UltraEdge revealed a clear spike as the ball passed Pant's bat before carrying through to the wicketkeeper, suggesting there had indeed been an edge.
