Are you worried enough about rising interest rates jump-starting a recession that you're looking for ways of sidestepping the effect of such an economic headwind? It's not a terrible idea to at least start making a mental plan for that possibility.
You may have considered Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRKA) (NYSE: BRKB) to fill that role. Its wholly owned, private businesses generate plenty of cash flow regardless of the economic backdrop, after all.

But how do Berkshire shares actually perform during recessions? It's not like the data doesn't exist.
You probably know Berkshire Hathaway best by its stock picks. Although they're not built to be an actively managed mutual fund, its equity holdings -- and changes to these holdings -- are closely followed by investors looking for some new ideas for their own portfolios.

If you are looking for reliable high yields in the energy sector, Energy Transfer (NYSE: ET) is likely to be high up on the list of options. And Wall Street really likes the stock, with 19 of the 21 ***** ysts covering it rating it a buy or strong buy. And yet, I just can't get myself to buy it, instead owning lower-yielding Enbridge (NYSE: ENB). Here's why Energy Transfer's 6.3% yield, despite distribution coverage of 2.2x, isn't enough to get me to buy it.
Before getting to Energy Transfer, I want to highlight some facts about Enbridge, the North American pipeline giant I actually bought. For starters, Enbridge's yield is 5.8%, roughly half a percentage point lower. That's a big difference, as buying Energy Transfer would increase my income stream by nearly 9%.

I can totally understand where a dividend investor would buy Energy Transfer for the added yield. But there's a big difference when you consider dividend history. Enbridge has increased its dividend annually for 31 consecutive years. Energy Transfer cut its distribution in 2020 during the COVID pandemic, right when most investors would probably have preferred dividend consistency. To Energy Transfer's credit, it lived up to its promise at the time to reduce leverage and return to distribution growth. In fact, the distribution is now above its level prior to the cut. And the cut was probably the right decision to make for the business.
But that distribution cut was a hit for unitholders. And it comes after another questionable situation back during the 1996 energy market downturn. At that point, Energy Transfer agreed to buy peer Williams (NYSE: WMB), but got cold feet. In an effort to scuttle the deal, Energy Transfer issued convertibles that appeared to protect insiders from a dividend cut, if one were made. The Williams deal was canceled, and the convertibles never became an issue, but it raised material trust issues for me.

The big day that seemingly everyone had circled on their calendar for weeks, Sept. 16, lived up to the hype.
On Wednesday, Sept. 16, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh and the 11 other voting members of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) raised the federal funds target rate by 25 basis points to a new range of 3.75%-4.00%. The first interest rate hike since July 2023 wasn't well-received by Wall Street, with the time-tested Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES:^DJI) tumbling more than 1%, and the broad-based S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) and innovation-powered Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) edging lower.

On September 17, Coherent Corp. (NYSE:COHR) announced an upgraded Pluggable Optical Line System that covers the full C-band and fits in a compact QSFP module, the same slot ordinary transceivers use. That is a lot of networking gear shrunk into a plug, and it follows a quarter of 34% revenue growth. Here is what the launch means, and where the stock's story gets harder to read.
Start with what the product does. The upgraded system can pack 32 wavelengths onto a single pair of fibers, which Coherent says adds up to as much as 25.6Tbps of traffic on links running 2km to 200km. It is designed for the latest 800G coherent optics, and it configures itself, handling link setup and laser safety without a technician tuning each connection. Coherent also says the system is generally available and already shipping in high volume, in 400G and 800G versions that work with existing network setups. Madhu Krishnaswamy, who runs the company's telecom transport unit, describes the goal as easing the usual trade-off between raw performance and operational simplicity.
The launch also sits on top of a business that is already moving. On August 12, Coherent reported results for its fiscal fourth quarter, which ended June 30: revenue of $2.05 billion, up 34% from a year earlier. Non-GAAP earnings per share rose to $1.74 from $1.00, and CEO Jim Anderson noted that for the full year, that measure grew more than twice as fast as revenue. Management guided to revenue of $2.2 billion to $2.4 billion for the first quarter of fiscal 2027, and Anderson says AI data centers are increasingly moving from copper to optical links.
Now look at the two versions of profit. Coherent's non-GAAP earnings came to $1.74 per share, but under GAAP the figure was $1.19. The gap comes from items management leaves out, including stock-based pay, amortization on acquired intangibles, and restructuring and integration costs. Operating margin shows it more clearly, at 21.8% on a non-GAAP basis and 12.4% under GAAP. Some of those costs are non-cash, but they are real, and anyone anchoring on the higher figure is skipping them.
Then there is how much weight this launch can carry. The announcement puts no sales figure on the product, so its contribution to a company that booked $2.05 billion in a quarter cannot be sized from what has been published. The bullish story also rests on management's own read of where AI networks are headed, and on a capacity build-out that CFO Sherri Luther says gets priority in spending. Money spent on capacity only pays off if the demand management describes keeps arriving.

After a spectacular August rally that saw it soar 25% in a single month, there's newfound optimism among many crypto investors that Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) could reclaim the $100,000 price level by the end of the year.

Let's be clear from the outset: The odds are not in Bitcoin's favor right now. Even at its current price of $76,500, Bitcoin faces a steep uphill battle to get to $100,000 in 2026.
On the Kalshi prediction market, for example, traders give Bitcoin a 4% chance of hitting $100,000 by November, an 11% chance by December, and a 16% chance by January 2027.

When Ray Dalio speaks, investors tend to listen, and likely for good reason. He ran Bridgewater **** ociates, the hedge fund he founded, for half a century, and over that time, he was one of the most successful investment managers in history.
In fact, he has long used history as a guide for deploying capital, and today, he believes history offers lessons for how investors should approach the AI boom. Specifically, he sees echoes of 1929 and 2000 in the current situation, and is urging investors to approach AI stocks with caution. Here is what he said and why investors may want to heed his advice.

First of all, investors should remember that Dalio has stepped down from Bridgewater. Thus, the fund's investments in AI stocks like ServiceNow and Nutanix were likely made without his input.
Given what he has said recently, he may even disagree with those purchases. When Dalio appeared on the podcast The Diary of a CEO in August, he said that AI shows "classic signs" of a bubble.

TJX Companies is confident in navigating weather-related events such as El Niño due to its warehouse distribution model, CEO Ernie Herrman said in a Q2 earnings call on Aug. 19.
Herrman said since the company keeps its liquidity and shipping out of its warehouses, it has better control than traditional retailers. Inventory doesn't need to go straight to the stores if the off-price retailer thinks there's going to be an unusual weather pattern in a certain region, he added.
"[T]his is a benefit of our model where we stage goods in our warehouses versus goods at most brick-and-mortar retailers come into the warehouse and have to go out," Herrman told **** ysts. He added that the company's "planning organization is really good at reacting to any wild swings in weather or natural disasters or any of those red flags."
Off-price retailers and classic retailers tend to have different supply chain models when it comes to how they manage their inventory, but it's not one-size fits all, Dheera Anand, a partner at Bain and Co., told Supply Chain Dive in an interview. The supply chain strategy Hermann described in TJX's earnings call is known as the hold and flow, or staged, model, Anand said.

Back in 2021, banks treated crypto like radioactive waste. Fast forward to 2026, and financial giant Visa (NYSE: V) isn't just dipping a toe in -- it's basically cannonballing into the deep end of the stablecoin pool.

In July, Visa introduced the Visa Stablecoin Platform (VSP). Think of it as a plug-and-play stablecoin toolkit for traditional banks and fintechs.
Instead of traditional institutions sweating over managing private keys, setting up multi-sig wallets, or figuring out how to mint and burn tokens, Visa handed them a slick "Wallet-as-a-Service." Starting with Open USD, an upcoming token, Visa will also support the popular USDC (CRYPTO: USDC) coin later this year. Banks can now hold, move, and settle stablecoins using the same enterprise-grade security tools they're already comfortable with. It's in beta testing for now, pending the Open USD launch.

Property and casualty insurer Progressive (NYSE: PGR) is probably best known for selling auto insurance. That's a highly competitive segment of the industry, but the company has proven its chops, reporting a strong combined ratio of 87.3% in the second quarter of 2026. Is the roughly 10% pullback from the 52-week high, and about 25% drawdown from 2025's peak, as of this writing, enough to make the stock a buy? Probably not if you are a value investor.
The combined ratio is a measure of profitability in the insurance sector, with numbers below 100% indicating that a company is earning more from premiums than it costs to support those premiums and cover claims. Progressive has a strong history of running its business well on this front. Basically, it is a good business. But paying too much for a good business can turn it into a bad investment, as Benjamin Graham was fond of saying (Graham notably helped train Warren Buffett).

So the real question here is whether the drawdowns noted above were sufficient to make Progressive's valuation attractive. The answer there isn't clean cut. For example, the price-to-sales ratio of 1.4x is in the middle of the historical range of roughly 0.5x to 2.2x. If anything, the P/S ratio is kind of toward the high side. The same general story holds with the price-to-book ratio. So these two metrics hint at a stock that isn't expensive, but it also isn't trading at bargain-basement prices.
The price-to-earnings ratio is a bit more positive, with the 11.1x P/E toward the lower end of its historical range. And the average insurance company has a P/E ratio of around 11.8x, so this makes Progressive look reasonably priced. Only Progressive's P/B ratio is 3.7x compared to the industry average of 1.7x, so the broader industry comparison still isn't a clear-cut win.

While it's extremely difficult to predict a stock market pullback, there are certainly harbingers that the market could be in for a rough ride over the coming month. The September-October period ahead of U.S. mid-term elections is historically a volatile one. In fact, Cantor Fitzgerald notes that the S&P 500 index has fallen by 5% or more during these two months in 15 of the past 24 midterm election cycles.
At the same time, two major market valuation indicators point to stocks being at extremely frothy valuations. The S&P 500 Shiller CAPE (cyclically adjusted price-to-earnings) ratio is at over 40 times for the first time since before the dot.com market crash. The so-called Buffett indicator (U.S. stock market value divided by gross domestic product), named after Warren Buffett, is over 230%, well above the 120% where the market is considered overvalued. Throw in a war and a stressed consumer, and the ingredients for a market pullback are there.

There is no guarantee of a big market dip, and even if there were one, I wouldn't panic. Instead, I'd view it as a strong buying opportunity. AI has changed the equation, leading to big productivity gains that are just beginning, and stocks are generally cheap on a forward basis. The market today is very different than in the past. The S&P 500 is no longer led by cyclical and financial companies. Instead, it's dominated by large tech companies with strong balance sheets that produce enormous operating cash flow.
Let's look at five exchange-traded funds (ETFs) to scoop up if the market dips in the coming month.

On August 18, Amer Sports (NYSE:AS) reported second-quarter results that beat its own guidance and then raised the bar for the rest of the year. Revenue climbed 32% to $1.63 billion, adjusted operating profit nearly tripled, and every region and segment posted double-digit growth. Diluted earnings per share reached $0.18, up from a much smaller figure a year earlier. What stands out about August 18 is not just the size of the beat but how broad it was.
Technical Apparel grew 32% to $674 million, led by Arc'teryx and backed by a 17% omni-comp gain across owned stores and e-commerce. Outdoor Performance grew even faster, up 37% to $569 million, driven by Salomon Softgoods. Ball & Racquet Sports rose 24% to $390 million on the strength of Wilson Tennis 360. CEO James Zheng pointed to strong double-digit growth across every segment, geography, and channel as the reason for confidence in the outlook.
That confidence showed up in the numbers: Amer Sports raised full-year 2026 guidance to roughly 24% reported revenue growth, a gross margin of 60.5% to 61.0%, an operating margin of 14.2% to 14.5%, and diluted EPS of $1.27 to $1.30. The balance sheet backs up the reinvestment CFO Andrew Page described, with $573 million in net cash and $720 million in cash and equivalents at quarter-end.
Some of the second quarter's biggest numbers lean on a one-time tailwind. Gross margin expanded 710 basis points to 65.6%, but 390 of those points came from net tariff refunds. Operating margin's 820 basis point jump included the same 390-point benefit. The effect is largest in Ball & Racquet Sports, where adjusted segment operating margin rose 1,300 basis points to 17.2%, yet 970 of those points came from tariff refunds alone. Selling, general and administrative expenses rose 30% to $909 million, and on an adjusted basis SG&A grew 33%, faster than revenue itself.
Inventories climbed 19% year over year to $1,897 million. The guidance for the next quarter also points to a slower pace: third quarter revenue growth is guided at 18% to 20%, well below the 32% just reported, with gross margin guided down to about 59.0% and net finance cost alone guided to $15 million to $20 million, against roughly $85 million for the entire year.

One of the biggest stories in markets this year has been how stubborn inflation remains. Geopolitical tension in the Middle East spurred the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in March, which rose 3.4% year over year in August. However, even before this conflict, the CPI was still well above the Federal Reserve's 2% target.
The market is starting to believe that inflation will stick around for a lot longer than initially expected. This could explain why Treasury yields, particularly for 10-, 20-, and 30-year terms, have risen significantly in the past 12 months. The **** umption is that interest rates will stay elevated for an extended time, at least compared to most of the 2010s.

Income investors looking to allocate capital are now faced with a crucial decision, one that might have been easier to make in the past. Is it smart to put money in dividend stalwarts, such as Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO) and Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG)? Or should U.S. government bonds be on your shopping list?
As of this writing on the morning of Sept. 16, the 10-year Treasury yields just under 5%. At the same time, investors can earn more than 5.3% on 20-year and 30-year bonds. For the sake of this **** ysis, I believe it's best to focus on the 10-year Treasury, as this is a reasonable holding period that's also comparable to long-term stock investing.

Apple is Berkshire's largest holding, making up about 22% of its portfolio. The stock is a Buffett favorite because it has one of the best compounding business models out there.
Apple, of course, is best known for its iPhone and other devices. Smartphones and computers tend to have very predictable replacement cycles, which creates an almost recurring type of revenue stream for the company. However, the beauty of the business stems from its closed-garden ecosystem that helps lock in consumers, from which it then collects high-margin service revenue. This revenue comes from a variety of sources, including a search revenue-sharing deal with Alphabet, commissions on app downloads, Apple Pay, and subscriptions for things like cloud storage.

Tesla's (NASDAQ: TSLA) business is in an interesting spot. The company saw a significant sales rebound in the second quarter, with revenue rising 26% year over year to reach $22.5 billion. Recent reports also suggest that the company's share of the U.S. electric vehicle (EV) market has risen sharply amid a substantial sales contraction for the overall industry. And while the company's net income fell 5% annually in the second quarter, the business still recorded net income of $1.11 billion in the period.
On the other hand, positive net income doesn't tell the whole story because the metric doesn't include capital expenditures (capex) that are recorded as ****** ets on the balance sheet. With Tesla betting big on its robotaxi project, Optimus humanoid robots, and other potential growth drivers, the company recorded $5.79 billion in capex in Q2. As a result, the business posted -$1.1 billion in free cash flow (FCF) in the period. With FCF coming up negative lately, the company's $43.5 billion cash position provides a valuable cushion.

Tesla posted substantial sales growth in the second quarter as some of the pressures facing the brand eased, higher gas prices encouraged EV purchases, and price cuts helped spur demand. On the other hand, it remains to be seen whether this sales growth momentum is sustainable -- and banking on the core EV business to be an earnings driver that can support the company's highly growth-dependent valuation seems unwise.
While Tesla has seen competitors based in the U.S., ****** an, and South Korea reduce their focus on the EV market, BYD and other China-based rivals are making inroads in the market and continue to bet heavily on long-term growth in the category. CEO Elon Musk appears to have a good grasp on the challenging competitive landscape and has been positioning robotaxis, humanoid robots, and semiconductor projects as the core elements of his company's growth strategy.

Micron (NASDAQ: MU) and Sandisk (NASDAQ: SNDK) have been two of the best-performing stocks in the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) so far this year. Sandisk is leading the way with an incredible 550% gain. Micron is in fourth place, up by over 220%. That means both of these stocks have tripled (or more than tripled in Sandisk's case), but I think that's just the beginning. In fact, if you invested $2,500 in each of these stocks, for a total of $5,000, I think that the combined value of those stakes will rise to $15,000 by the time 2028 arrives.
While that may sound far-fetched, the math backs it up, suggesting that these are two of the best investments you could make in the stock market right now.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
The reason these two have done so well in 2026 is that there is no spare memory chip production capacity left. Micron and Sandisk are two of just three big players in this industry, and all of their production is being eaten up by massive demand for additional artificial intelligence computing power. AI processors and servers need heavy volumes of memory to function efficiently, and as a result, there's now a serious shortage of memory, so prices are skyrocketing.
This supply-and-demand imbalance is the culprit behind rising prices for consumer computing hardware, as these devices all require memory chips, too.

Quantum computers can be better at processing data-heavy workloads in areas like science and cryptography, because they can use a concept called superposition to simulate multiple solutions to a problem at the same time. However, even the best quantum systems today are still making far too many errors to solve complex real-world problems.
Rigetti Computing (NASDAQ: RGTI) is one of the industry leaders right now, and it's making genuine progress. But considering even the company's most powerful quantum computers aren't overly useful yet, it's struggling to generate meaningful sales, so it's burning through truckloads of cash while it continues to conduct research and development.

That creates a problem for shareholders, because Rigetti stock is trading at a sky-high valuation, which opens the door to potential downside if the company can't find a way to bring in significantly more revenue in the near future. Here's why I predict the stock will plummet over the next 12 months.
Rigetti built its own fabrication facility to produce chips, developed its own quantum programming language, and even created its own cloud platform, which it can rent to other businesses, thereby monetizing quantum computing capacity. By effectively operating its own end-to-end supply chain, the company can bring new systems to market much faster than many of its competitors.

Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ:PLTR) CEO Alex Karp just added a third front to the fight over artificial intelligence (AI) safety on Thursday, arguing that the companies developing the technology -- the Anthropics and OpenAI's of the world -- should face civil and criminal penalties if AI causes the damage their CEOs are warning of.
Speaking with CNBC, Karp said that he agreed that "reasonable guidelines" for the industry should be enforced, but that "you can't do it" and that "the first line of defense" instead should be to hold companies and their leaders responsible for their own actions.

Karp was weighing in on an ongoing and high-profile debate within the industry. After Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei penned an essay warning that AI capabilities were improving too quickly for researchers to understand and control them and that action must be taken to ensure the public's safety, he was joined by several AI leaders with calls for a slowdown and increased oversight.
Here's a look at what they had to say:

Warren Buffett may no longer be CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, but he's not likely to soon be forgotten.
He remains executive chair of the company, and the lessons he taught his employees and the rest of the world will surely last for generations. Buffett also left his mark on Berkshire Hathaway's massive stock portfolio, which is valued today at roughly $363 billion.

Under his leadership, the conglomerate initiated positions in a number of stocks that could remain in the portfolio for decades. Two of those stakes alone now earn the company roughly $1.44 billion in combined annual dividends.
The iconic consumer beverage company is the longest-held stock position in Berkshire's portfolio.

While an Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) stock split in 2026 isn't impossible, I think it's highly unlikely. The company last completed a stock split in 2024, when its share price stood at roughly $1,200. After the 10-for-1 split, the company's stock traded at roughly $120 per share.
Currently, it's trading around $210 per share, which is likely not a high enough pure-dollar level to encourage the company to reorganize its stock structure.

That said, I still think that Nvidia stands out as a worthwhile long-term investment.
Nvidia and other leading AI stocks have recently seen some downward valuation pressures connected to increased calls for safety guardrails and other regulations around the progression of artificial intelligence (AI) development. These technologies are evolving fast, and there are good reasons to be concerned. On the other hand, I expect that the intensifying focus on the dangers that AI poses will ultimately have a relatively small impact on Nvidia's growth trajectory.

In mid-September, stablecoins received a fresh injection of legitimacy when payments specialist MoneyGram introduced a new Visa-branded debit card backed by one. The product is somewhat unimaginatively called the MoneyGram Card, underpinned by the USDC (CRYPTO: USDC) stablecoin. In turn, Circle Internet Group (NYSE: CRCL) develops and manages the coin.
I believe this is a positive development not only for USDC and the company that co-developed and manages it but also for the wider stablecoin ecosystem. Here's why.

MoneyGram is the ideal company to offer such a card, as its bread and ***** er is remittances (i.e., cross-border payments, usually from people in economically advantaged countries to ***** ociates in less prosperous ones).
One of the great promises of cryptocurrencies is that transacting in them can be almost instantaneous and near-frictionless, anywhere in the world. So they're very suitable for remittances, as the facilitator behind them has less contact with challenges such as sharp exchange-rate moves, slow transaction settlement times, and other impediments to money transfers.

It's hard to overstate how important the Model Y was for Tesla's (NASDAQ: TSLA) overall growth journey. Today, that model alone accounts for more than 90% of Tesla's vehicle sales. The Model Y allowed Tesla to significantly expand its sales base, which, in turn, enabled the company to scale its production facilities to reach economies of scale -- the driving force behind Tesla's 24-quarter streak of consecutive profits.
In short, the Model Y is one of the biggest factors behind Tesla's current $1.1 trillion market capitalization.

Rivian Automotive's (NASDAQ: RIVN) valuation, meanwhile, still hovers just above $20 billion. This valuation gap has many causes. But for years, the biggest issue was that Rivian lacked an affordable vehicle priced for the masses like the Model Y. Rivian addressed that problem this summer when it began deliveries of its R2 SUV -- its first vehicle priced under $50,000.
Next month, investors will get the first meaningful update on how Rivian's sales and production capacities are scaling for the R2. Here's exactly what you should be paying attention to.
