KYIV, Aug 29 (Reuters) - At least 37 people were killed after a Russian drone attack on a Kyiv-area ammunition depot sparked a detonation, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Saturday, vowing to punish suspected negligence in the second such incident in two months.
The deadliest Russian strike in the Kyiv area this year came as Moscow's air attacks on the Ukrainian capital and surrounding region dragged into a third straight day, killing residents, damaging homes and derailing daily life.
Dozens were also injured and hundreds evacuated from the area of the strike late on Friday on the village of Myla, Zelenskiy said, where nearby infrastructure including residential buildings and a facility for the elderly and people with disabilities suffered "significant damage".
The attack sparked widespread fires, officials said. Among those killed was the head of a neighbouring village who rushed to help.

The new study, trumpeted by the New York Times with a companion article suggesting that OSHA should get involved, regarding CTE rates in pro football likely won't alter in any major way the realities of or participation in the sport, at all levels. Unless and until CTE can be diagnosed in living patients, football players will continue to embrace the vague (but real) risk of developing cognitive problems later in life.
But the data could provide ammunition for one specific aspect of the game. It could fuel an effort to move the touchback point on kickoffs from the 35 back to the 30.
Last year, when the touchback changed to the 35 and teams became incentivized to put more kickoffs in play, concussions spiked. Specifically for the player returning the kick and the player tackling him.
The league is well aware of this reality. And the question is whether the NFL becomes content to have fewer returns in the name of having fewer high-impact hits for two of the 22 players on the field during a kickoff play.
And while the current kickoff play dramatically reduces the possibility of the one potential outcome the league never says out loud (catastrophic neck injuries leading to potential paralysis or death), it presents a clear risk of increased concussions. Underneath all of it, the company cut its debt balances by $63 million in the quarter, close to $60 million of that through voluntary repurchases at a discount, pushing year-to-date debt reduction to nearly $130 million with $700 million still undrawn on its revolver.

What's the definition of "not going well?" How about playing a series against a team that came in on a 12-game losing streak, and getting swept? The series against the Marlins showed that it's not just one thing plaguing the Phillies at the moment, it's everything. Each loss came in a different fashion, with the one common thread being poor defense.
Next, the Phillies will travel to Baltimore to take on an Orioles team that theoretically should provide some opportunities for victories. However, considering how poorly the team has played since the All-Star Game, any future opponents could say the same thing.
Jackson Holliday was a can't miss prospect. The son of a former All-Star and first overall pick of the 2022 draft, Holliday was rated as the top prospect in baseball prior to the 2024 season. When he was called up to the majors in April of that year, it was expected that the middle infielder would become an instant star.
For every Phillies fan who complains that the team is too slow to promote their young players, just remember that not every prospect, no matter how touted they are, is going to be succeed immediately upon reaching the majors. Holliday struggled so much that the team quickly demoted him. (For the fans who want to trade every prospect, this is some ammunition for your case.)

A Pentagon watchdog report found that in the roughly two years since it was built, an ammunition plant in Mesquite, Texas, has not produced any parts for 155mm artillery rounds, hindering the Army's goal to help backfill stocks of ammunition provided to Ukraine after Russia invaded in 2022.
In a report released Monday, the Defense Department inspector general found that as of March 2026, the plant had not produced any metal projectile parts that met the specifications laid out in the contract and the "the Army's expenditure of $469 million to establish the Mesquite facility could have been used to address other Army or [Department of Defense] priorities."
Over the past four years, the Pentagon depleted its inventory of 155mm artillery by 3.6 million rounds, according to the report. The report does not note how many rounds are in the stockpile.
More than 3 million rounds were given to Ukraine through weapons packages committed by the Biden administration. Roughly 112,000 rounds were used for training and testing, and another 218,000 were sold to other countries.
Based on the consumption in Ukraine and anticipated foreign military sales, the Army in 2024 set a goal to ramp up production of 155mm artillery from 14,000 rounds per month to 100,000 by Oct. 2025 and invested in the Mesquite plant in Texas to help produce specific parts.

June 15 (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court turned away on Monday a gun industry challenge to a New York law that permits lawsuits against gun makers, wholesalers and dealers for endangering people's safety through sales of firearms and ammunition.
The justices declined to hear an appeal by an industry trade group, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, of a lower court's ruling upholding the law, which New York calls a public nuisance statute. The group had argued that the law unconstitutionally conflicted with federal law.
Gun companies including Smith & Wesson, Ruger, Beretta, Glock, Sig Sauer and Sturm joined the appeal.

The chief of staff for Rep. Pete Sessions, a Texas Republican, was charged Wednesday with bringing a firearm into the US Capitol complex, according to court documents obtained by CNN.
Luis Angel Vega appeared in DC Superior Court Friday on the charges, which stem from an alleged incident in December.
Vega faces two counts: carrying a gun outside his home without a license and carrying a firearm onto the Capitol grounds.
He was in handcuffs and his white ***** on-down shirt was untucked. A judge released him without setting bail.
In December, Capitol security officers found the black pistol and ammunition Vega allegedly carried when he sent his bag through a security checkpoint at the entrance of a House office building that's part of the Capitol complex, the court documents said. They then instructed Vega to lock up the firearm in his car and then return for his bag to be re-screened, which he did, according to the filings.
