Ever since I started managing my own household, I'd dreamed of having a membership to Costco.
Friends with memberships told me about the beautiful fruits and vegetables, amazing deals on alcohol and bargains on peanut ****** er and coffee. I ogled Pinterest meal plans where people would extol the value of Costco.
Costco sounded like a foodie paradise. But since it was just my husband and me, I couldn't justify the annual expense of the $65 membership, not knowing whether we'd be able maximize it. Would the membership be worth it, even though we weren't shopping for a big family?
Then, my husband and I adopted a dog, and his foster mom recommended purchasing Costco dog food because of its quality and value. That's when we decided to take the plunge and buy a membership.
Since then, I've enjoyed shopping at Costco as much as I thought I would, although there's been a bit of a learning curve.

Kevin McEnroe has been sober for seven years and shares his story on his Substack newsletter Serenity Side Down
He looks back on his family saga, including when he became mom Tatum O'Neal's medical proxy after her 2020 stroke. "In helping her, I started to believe I could become a better man."
McEnroe discusses his family's recovery journey and says of his mom, "The fact we're both such bad alcoholics makes us closer because she can be honest with me."
Kevin McEnroe had been in drug rehab for several months when his sister Emily called him in May 2020 about their mom, Tatum O'Neal.
"She'd had a stroke and was in a coma and might not make it," Kevin recalls. "She had overdosed again. I spent the next month fielding calls about her progress — checking if she's alive. I had to show up and be there for her. It was you need to do this, and I did."

President Donald Trump fired off a 1,321-word Truth Social post Sunday night mocking and attacking Bill Maher, days after the comedian defended attending a recent White House dinner with the president during his show's opening monologue on Friday night and declaring, "I like these dinners."
US President Donald Trump speaks at a midterm election campaign rally at Guardian Centers of Georgia in Perry, Georgia.
In the post, Trump lobbed multiple insults at Maher, calling him a "coward," a "major POTHEAD," and a "loser" while attacking the comedian's HBO talk show.
The president claimed that Maher was drunk during their recent dinner, alleging that he had "alcohol in his hand" as he walked through the White House and "looked like **** ."
Trump also disputed Maher's claim that the dinner, attended by ESPN host Stephen A. Smith and musician Kid Rock, lasted four hours, saying it lasted "two hours, maybe less," and adding he "felt it was a waste of time."

One year after Joan Kennedy's death, her friend remembers a resilient survivor who was much more than a "Kennedy wife"
The former wife of Sen Ted Kennedy was candid about her own alcoholism and supportive of the recovery community
Joan planned her own funeral, especially the music, choosing "America, The Beautiful" at the end, which her friend Margo Nash says, "I think it was her way of saying goodbye"
There was always more to Joan Kennedy than being a "Kennedy wife," as loyal as she was to the family, long after her 1982 divorce from from Sen. Ted Kennedy. One year after her death on Oct. 8, 2025, at 89 years old, her friend Margo Nash, 77, remembers a woman who, most of all, "was a survivor."
We met in 2006 on Cape Cod. We had both gone to Manhattanville College and what struck me was how humble and accessible she was — given the fact that she had been part of history.

A Cornell University student gave campus police leads in the alleged rape of Jane Doe in 2024 but expressed dismay over how the authorities handled the case.
The student, who spoke to NBC News on Sunday on condition of anonymity over concerns about repercussions, said she first heard about allegations that Doe was raped as a rumor on campus about 24 to 48 hours after the incident. Doe, who filed a lawsuit last month, claimed she was plied with alcohol and ketamine and gang-raped at the Chi Phi fraternity house the night of Oct. 19-20.
The student recalled rumors that Doe was planning to have a threesome but that it had “gone off the rails,” and she remembers being “really horrified by it.”
“From that night, I think, we just kind of started, like, hearing more,” the student said.
Talk of the alleged **** ual **** ault became widespread on campus after the school issued a crime safety alert about a report of a **** ual **** ault at a fraternity.

The woman who alleges she was **** ually **** aulted by Cornell University fraternity members has received threats pressuring her to drop her lawsuit, her attorney said Sunday.

“She’s received multiple threats, and women who aren’t even Jane Doe receive threats,” Giuffra said. He added that he had received a threat Sunday morning.
Giuffra did not identify those responsible or say whether the threats had been reported to law enforcement. He did not immediately respond to NBC News’ request for more information about the threats.

As outrage builds around the case involving a Cornell University student allegedly gang-raped in a fraternity house in October 2024, the university’s president has broken his silence with a statement Saturday.
Jane Doe’s alleged experiences raise “heartbreaking and troubling issues about ******* ual ******* ault, dehumanization, and aspects of party culture, alcohol, and drug use,” Kotlikoff said in his video statement.
The Cornell president added the allegations raise questions around the initial investigation, saying the university does not have “all the answers” but is committed to investigating and finding them. He said next week, Cornell’s board of trustees will announce an independent review into the handling of the 2024 case by an outside law firm.

Cornell University police spoke to witnesses and received anonymous tips about an alleged gang rape at a fraternity house in the first weeks of its investigation two years ago, but the local prosecutor did not review the additional information before deciding not to bring charges.
Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten said he based his decision not to pursue charges on the accuser’s initial six-page statement given to police.
Investigators from the campus police department documented those witness interviews and other steps taken to determine whether Jane Doe, a 20-year-old woman who reported the incident, was the victim of ***** ual ***** ault during a party at the Chi Phi house from Oct. 19 to 20, 2024, according police records obtained by NBC News.
Documents reviewed by NBC News offer the most thorough look to date at how police handled the allegations from Jane Doe, who last month filed a lawsuit against Cornell University and seven Chi Phi brothers who she alleges ***** ually ***** aulted her over the course of hours while she was under the influence of ketamine, alcohol and marijuana.
Van Houten, along with police and university officials, has come under intense fire for their handling of the matter. Jane Doe’s attorney has argued that she was failed by authorities who did not conduct a thorough investigation and who prejudged the events based on her earlier statement that she consented to parts of the night.

Alex Dougherty has said, "Social media saved me."
He's the oldest of 11 kids and part of one of the most popular families on the internet, known as the Dougherty Dozen by their 7.8 million TikTok followers.
Like many people, his mom, Alicia, joined TikTok during the COVID-19 pandemic. She began posting about their extra-large family in 2020, when Alex was 14.
The appeal is simple: Viewers want to see what raising so many children is like, from the everyday to the extraordinary challenges. Seven of the Dougherty kids are adopted, and six have been diagnosed with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). Over time, viewers have gotten to know each kid as they grow up.

A former Cornell University student filed a civil lawsuit alleging that seven members of the Chi Phi fraternity drugged or pressured her to use drugs and alcohol and **** ually **** aulted her over several hours at the fraternity house in October 2024. The lawsuit and alleged fraternity Snapchat messages have since drawn national attention and scrutiny of Cornell's response.

Florence Pugh was among the first in Hollywood to speak out. "How can you expect us to trust that it's 'not all men' when in moments like this many of you stay quiet?"
Mariska Hargitay, Josh Gad and Hudson Williams also called out the allegations and demanded accountability, part of what has become a national conversation about **** ual violence, fraternity culture, and the institutions tasked with protecting students.
While some people argue that celebrities should stay in their lane and avoid activism, advocates say the response matters.

Fourteen years ago, Ken Jouppi, who had operated a charter airplane business in Alaska since the 1970s, agreed to fly a passenger from Fairbanks to Beaver, one of the state's dry jurisdictions. The passenger's luggage included 72 cans of Budweiser and Bud Light, which she planned to share with her husband on his birthday. Although most of the beer was boxed, a six-pack "was packed only in a grocery bag and would have been in plain view to Jouppi as he was loading the airplane," the Alaska Supreme Court noted last year.
State troopers discovered the beer before the plane took off, and Jouppi was convicted of a misdemeanor. The trial court, which concluded that Jouppi had been "willfully blind" to the six-pack, sentenced him to three days in jail and a $1,500 fine. But state law mandated another punishment that was 63 times as severe: forfeiture of Jouppi's $95,000 airplane. Although that penalty seemed grossly disproportionate, the Alaska Supreme Court ruled that it did not violate the Eighth Amendment's ban on excessive fines.
In July, responding to a petition filed by the Institute for Justice, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to review that decision. It will hear oral argument in Jouppi v. Alaska on December 1. In a brief supporting Jouppi's appeal that it filed last week, the Cato Institute argues that the Alaska Supreme Court erred by failing to consider the gravity of his conduct and the financial consequences of the forfeiture. Both of those factors, Cato attorney Matthew Cavedon says, have been central to the common-law understanding of excessive fines for eight centuries.
"The Eighth Amendment was designed to prevent this kind of abuse by limiting excessive fines," Cavedon writes. "Long before the United States was founded, the common law protected people from extreme monetary penalties. But the Alaska Supreme Court's view is that challenges to excessive fines 'should rarely succeed.' This dismissive view led it to conclude that there is nothing excessive about the forfeiture of an airplane worth 'only 9.5 times the maximum fine'—and over 60 times the fine actually imposed. The decision below cannot be reconciled with this Court's precedent or the Excessive Fines Clause's original meaning."
In weighing the proportionality of the airplane forfeiture, the Alaska Supreme Court thought the relevant consideration was the harm caused by excessive drinking. "Alcohol abuse in rural Alaska leads to increased crime; disorders, such as alcoholism; conditions, such as fetal alcohol spectrum disorder; and death, imposing substantial costs on public health and the administration of justice," Justice Jude Pate wrote in the majority opinion. "Within this context, it is clear that the illegal importation of even a six-pack of beer causes grave societal harm."

Iowa wrestler Jordan Williams has been charged with operating while under the influence, according to Johnson County court records.
This is Williams' second OWI charge, according to court documents, with the first coming in Payne County, Oklahoma, in August 2023.
The incident occurred Sept. 7. According to a police affidavit, an officer approached a vehicle that had been running with its lights on for "at least" two hours in a parking lot/garage at 180 E. Burlington St. in Iowa City. The officer found Williams unconscious with an open container of alcohol in his lap.
The police affidavit states that after Williams woke up, the officer observed an alcohol smell, slurred speech and bloodshot eyes, as well as Williams showing impairment in standardized field sobriety tests. Williams refused a preliminary breath test, according to the police affidavit.
This is Williams' second off-the-mat incident since committing to Iowa in 2025. On June 14, 2025, while Williams was publicly committed to Iowa but not yet signed, he was involved in an incident at ReUnion Brewery in Iowa City. He and his attorney later agreed to an amended plea of a simple misdemeanor charge for disorderly conduct.

Annual U.S. cancer deaths tied to alcohol consumption more than doubled over a three-decade period, according to a recent study led by researchers at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
The findings, published in The Lancet Regional Health — Americas and presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting in Chicago, revealed that alcohol-attributable cancer deaths jumped from 11,361 in 1990 to 23,126 in 2023.
Researchers ******* yzed more than 30 years of data from the Global Burden of Disease study to track the trends.
Beer, Wine Or Liquor? Massive Study Reveals Which Was Linked To Lower Death Risk
While alcohol has long been classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, surveys show that awareness of its link to cancer remains limited.

Both the Steelers and the Falcons have new coaching staffs heading into Week 1. It's safe to say both franchises will be looking to start their new era off on the right foot with a victory. I spoke with Kevin Knight of The Falcoholic to learn a bit about what's new with the Atlanta Falcons.
Kevin Knight: Well, now even Tua Tagovailoa is out of the lineup thanks to an oblique injury suffered during individual drills on Thursday. That means Cooper Rush at the helm (who, in truth, may not be any worse than Tua based on the aforementioned preseason). What you're going to see is a lot of quick game, and as much Bijan Robinson as the team can muster. If Atlanta can run the ball well and get Bijan going, they can score points. So that'll be the plan, with the passing game largely taking a complementary role until Michael Penix Jr. returns.
Kevin Knight: This is a good defense that will have to find ways to manufacture pass rush. Thankfully, Jeff Ulbrich is an evil genius with his blitz packages, and he's got a lot of interesting looks planned. Expect to see a lot of linebacker and slot blitzes to supplement their weaker edge rusher room, along with a lot of emphasis on interior pass rush. Atlanta has a really nice interior duo with Brandon Dorlus (who was leading all interior defensive linemen in the NFC with 8.5 sacks last season before injury) and trade acquisition Gervon Dexter Sr. They're hoping the interior can offset some of their weaknesses outside.
Kevin Knight: I like Kevin Stefanski and think it pretty much takes a miracle worker to extract any amount of success from the Cleveland Browns organization. It does seem like there's a coherent, forward-thinking plan in place for this Falcons team for the first time in years. I don't necessarily expect a lot of success in 2026 based on the moves made to this point and the way the team is structured, but I do expect Atlanta to be one of the most aggressive teams in free agency and the draft in 2027.
Kevin Knight: As I mentioned before, Brandon Dorlus is a borderline-elite interior pass rusher who may also get some run on the edge. Linebacker Divine Deablo was the biggest surprise in last year's free agent class and completely transformed the defense when he was on the field. Second-year safety Xavier Watts was a DROY candidate in 2025 and forms a dynamic duo with veteran Jessie Bates III. Atlanta will be starting two rookies on defense: Avieon Terrell (brother of A.J. Terrell) in the slot, and Kendal Daniels at linebacker. Both impressed in training camp, with Daniels being a particularly pleasant surprise given his Day 3 selection.

Casey's General Stores Inc. (NASDAQ:CASY), the third-largest convenience chain and fifth-biggest pizza brand within the U.S., released its first quarter results, showing early traction from the company's recently announced three-year strategic plan. For the recent quarter, inside same-store sales jumped 3.2% year-over-year, and 7.7% on a two-year stacked basis, leading to inside margins of 42.2%. Total inside gross profit stood at $749.8 million, rising 6.3% compared to the same period last year. The company posted net income of $273.7 million, exhibiting a 27.1% increase relative to Q1 last year. This translated into a 27.7% jump in diluted EPS which rose to $7.37.

Casey's is building on its three-year roadmap which rests on three core pillars. These include acceleration of growth across food and beverage, scaling up its store footprint, and elevating its operational efficiency.
Food remains a major growth enabler for the broader business, with prepared foods and nonalcoholic beverages currently driving the expansion of inside sales. Wings sales within Des Moines market also posted a 20% year-over-year sales jump. This positions the company to benefit from a larger opportunity of ramping up the offerings across roughly 3,000 stores, and cements Casey's reputation as a food destination.
The retailer also plans to expand its operations with at least 400 stores through a mix of acquisitions, and ground-up development of new stores. The integration of Fikes Wholesale, owner of CEFCO Convenience Stores and Casey's largest acquisition to date, demonstrates its capacity to expand through dealmaking. Management said the integration remains ahead of schedule.

Puka Nacua has opened up about his struggles with alcohol, therapy and rehabilitation ahead of the Los Angeles Rams' season opener against the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne.
Speaking to Netflix's Elle Duncan, Nacua admitted he had used alcohol to escape the pressure building around him as his NFL career took off.
Nacua's rise has been remarkably quick. The former fifth-round pick became a star almost immediately, while last season he led the NFL with 129 receptions and finished with 1,715 receiving yards.

The Rams receiver said becoming a public figure, maintaining a high level of performance and becoming a father all contributed to the stress he was carrying.

The Los Angeles Rams, the heavy Super Bowl favorites entering the season, opened the year in the NFL's first-ever game in Melbourne, Australia, against the San Francisco 49ers. The majority of the attention the Rams have gotten this offseason has been centered on the defensive line, which was bolstered by the acquisition of the NFL's single-season sack record holder Myles Garrett and the return of Aaron Donald from retirement.
However, Los Angeles also has one of the most potent offenses in the league, with reigning league MVP Matthew Stafford passing to two of the best wide receivers in the league, Davante Adams and Puka Nacua. Unfortunately for Nacua, he's been caught up in some off-the-field trouble recently.
Ahead of kickoff on Thursday, Nacua sat down with Netflix's Elle Duncan and spoke candidly about his struggles wth alcohol.
"I think I learned that I'm very avoidant of conflict, which is very interesting due to the football nature of… I would like to say I play very physical, just avoidant of the things that I know were causing me stress," Nacua told Duncan.
"Just, I think some of the change in lifestyle that came up to me, becoming a public figure, the stress of performing at a high level," he responded after being asked what was causing him stress. "And then I recently became a father. My son is 10 months old. And navigating that co-parenting relationship with his mother, I would kind of isolate myself to feel like the weight of all the issues and things that I have was stuck on my shoulders, and not being willing to ask for help. I was never one to share my fears and my worries. I was always Finding different ways to escape, I guess, from that tension or that stress."

Airing a Super Bowl is a bit like a presidential election.
It might come around every four years, but candidates – in this case, the four networks with the privilege and pockets to be in the broadcast rotation – are constantly jockeying and positioning themselves, especially as their turn nears.
That makes CBS' conundrum with Tony Romo even more precarious. Super Bowl 61 will return to ABC/ESPN for the first time in two decades to end the 2026 season on Feb. 14, 2027, but then CBS will officially be on the clock for February 2028, when it will host its first Super-Bowl broadcast since 2023.
Romo, the network's No. 1 game ****** yst who partners with Jim Nantz, was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI) and pleaded no contest Sept. 2 to three charges he faced from the incident, which occurred while in his native Wisconsin on July 23. The subsequent police officer bodycam footage became Internet fodder, as Romo failed his field sobriety test, told the officer who pulled him over he was "going to see grandma and grandpa" (his own parents) and had an open container in the passenger seat.
In his first public comment since the arrest, Romo said via a Sept. 1 statement posted to his Instagram account, "I own this completely." He also noted an over-reliance on alcohol stemming from a dependence on pain medication following his playing career.

A bitter legal fight between Aaliyah's uncle and her cousin has produced a stunning accusation: Barry Hankerson is blaming his own son Jomo for the 2001 plane crash that killed the R&B star.
The claim surfaces in lawsuit documents obtained by TMZ, which show Barry alleges Jomo was hired and compensated to coordinate travel for Aaliyah's "Rock the Boat" video shoot in the Bahamas. Barry contends Jomo "failed in his responsibility" to carry out that role, and states the crash "may have been avoided had [Jomo] followed through on his compensated task of travel coordination."
Barry also says his relationship with his son was never the same after Aaliyah's death.
Aaliyah died on August 25, 2001, when a small aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Marsh Harbour in the Abaco Islands, killing all nine people aboard. Investigators found the plane was overloaded, and pilot Luis Morales III had falsified FAA credentials, had traces of cocaine and alcohol in his system, and was not certified to fly the designated aircraft.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Former Fox Sports ****** yst Mark Sanchez plans to plead guilty to charges ahead of a trial stemming from an October 2025 fight with a truck driver outside an Indianapolis hotel, according to court records filed Thursday.
A motion asks for a guilty plea and sentencing hearing for Sanchez in Marion County Superior Court. Online records didn't indicate which charges Sanchez plans to plead guilty to.
Sanchez faces a felony battery charge, along with three misdemeanor charges, for what prosecutors have said was a fight over parking.
The ex-NFL quarterback's jury trial was scheduled to start Tuesday. The trial had been rescheduled five times since it was initially set to begin in December. Sanchez and Fox Sports also face a civil lawsuit filed by the truck driver, Perry Tole.
A police affidavit alleges that Sanchez, smelling of alcohol, accosted Tole, who had backed his truck into a hotel's loading docks in downtown Indianapolis. Tole claims in his lawsuit that Sanchez entered the truck without permission, then physically blocked and shoved Tole, who then doused Sanchez with pepper spray.

Tony Romo recently pleaded no contest and accepted responsibility for his OWI arrest, but Ryan Leaf had one issue with his statement.
After pleading no contest to a civil offense of operating while intoxicated in Wisconsin, Romo put out a statement admitting his "over-reliance on alcohol" while taking full responsibility for his actions before teasing his return to CBS, a return the network has not commented on as their lead NFL ****** yst remains on indefinite leave. But Romo also attributed his "over-reliance on alcohol" to his attempt at getting off a dependence on paid medication used to combat "debilitating pain" following multiple back surgeries during his NFL career.
Ryan Leaf, a former NFL quarterback who has been very open about being a recovering addict after a decade-long battle with an opiate addiction, joined The Dan Patrick Show Wednesday morning where he wished Romo wouldn't have referenced back pain in his statement.
"I used to think football was the problem. No, it's a me problem. Football was never the problem; football gave me everything. I had to figure it out," Leaf told Patrick. "It's why, with the Tony Romo statement we just saw, I thought it was a very good statement; I didn't need the part about having 'debilitating back pain.' Take that whole paragraph out. You don't need any of that. You chose to do this, and it's cost you this, and you're going to admit to it, and you're going to find a way to get better."
"I was reading it with my wife yesterday," Leaf continued of Romo's statement. "And I was just like, 'Oh no.' You don't have to say that part. Everybody's had surgeries. Everybody's going through debilitating pain. I played on a golf tour with him; he was always out there on a golf tour playing. If you're in such pain, why are you out there playing golf all the time? That's not helping things."
