Dundee head coach Steven Pressley: "What I would say is we've obviously come here with a game plan, but we didn't carry out any part of it to be honest. But what was very apparent in our performance was the grit and determination that your supporters are generally so proud of.
"I'm immensely proud of this group of players, but in terms of what we set out to do, no. Derby games are never won on tactical detail, they're won on spirit and determination and I think we had than in abundance today.
"Sometimes winning away from home is being comfortable with the uncomfortable and we did that at times today. It was no tactical detail that won us the game today, it was a group of players that were determined not to lose that derby and I couldn't be prouder of the players.
"What's most pleasing is that the three games have been incredibly difficult games, but there's a spirit about us, a togetherness about us just now that is serving us well.
"We have to remember we're only three games into it, but I know a derby game is very important for momentum, the feel-good factor and very important for supporters, so I'm a very proud manager tonight."

After falling just one game short of the postseason last year, the Charlotte Hornets still hold the longest current playoff drought in the NBA, which spans back to the 2015-16 season. However, in four offseason trades, the Hornets added plenty of playoff experience.
Between the trio of Pat Connaughton, Grant Williams and Coby White, they've combined for 152 games of playoff experience. That said, four of their main additions have an abundance of playoff minutes as well. Charlotte's most recent addition, Dennis Schroder, has appeared in 91 career playoff games. Veteran wing Royce O'Neale has played in 52 playoff games. Naz Reid has played in 48 playoff contests while Grayson Allen has suited up in 28. Lastly, 3-and-D wing Dorian Finney-Smith has played in 44 postseason matchups as well.
Not only will this added experience aid the Hornets in pursuit of the postseason, but these veterans will also be able to mentor Charlotte's young core headlined by Brandon Miller and Kon Knueppel that has yet to reach the playoffs.

Princess Anne turned 76 on Saturday, but her birthday this year seemed to be very understated due to one strict rule she follows, a royal expert has claimed.
Last year, the royal rang in her milestone 75th birthday by redirecting the spotlight to her patronages, hosting an abundance of charities at Buckingham Palace. For her celebrations this year, the Princess Royal stayed under the radar, once again shying away from the limelight.
According to royal expert Roya Nikkhah, Anne has a "no-frills" approach to her birthday celebrations, which hinges on one single digit. "Anne's policy is: 'I will do things for my birthdays that have a zero, but I won't do things for my birthdays that have a five'," the expert said on the Royals with Roya and Kate podcast.
The Princess Royal has a "no-frills" approach to her birthdays, according to a royal expert (@ Getty Images)
The royal spent her last major birthday, her 70th in 2020, sailing along the west coast of Scotland with her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence. Plans for a big family celebration had to be scaled back due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.

A socialist candidate for governor in Wisconsin with an extensive history of inflammatory online posts once described America as "an abundance of suffering," Fox News Digital has found.
"I want this country to stop being an abundance of suffering but a wealth of opportunity," reads a Jan. 20, 2022 X post from Wisconsin state Rep. Francesca Hong, who is running in the Democratic Party's primary election to become the state's top official.
"We can do this by providing equal rights to Black and Brown folks," the post continues. "Elect more Black and Brown folks who won't be racist obstructionists. We can all be better and do so much more."
Wisconsin Gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong waves as she acknowledges the crowd during a campaign rally on August 2, 2026 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

NEW YORK, Aug 11 (Reuters) - AI infrastructure company Alpha Compute has signed a binding term sheet to acquire land and natural gas rights in Pennsylvania for $55 million ‌to develop a 200-megawatt data center campus, CEO Brittany Kaiser told Reuters on Tuesday.
Surging demand for ‌artificial intelligence computing is driving a scramble for power supplies across the United States, prompting data center developers to secure their own energy sources rather than wait for grid connections.
Pennsylvania -- with its abundance of natural gas from the Marcellus shale basin, existing power infrastructure and proximity to major population centers on the East Coast -- has become one of the country's most sought-after locations for new data centers. Last year, Amazon announced $20 billion in ‌planned investment in the state.
Alpha Compute expects the northern Pennsylvania site, which would include gas-fired power generation, to begin operating in the third quarter of 2027, Kaiser said. The facility could eventually be expanded to generate one gigawatt of power, Kaiser added.

Caitlin Clark once again finds herself at the center of controversy for not speaking on the transgender athlete debate making waves across the WNBA and other sports.
Her decision to keep her focus on the game instead of siding with her Indiana Fever teammate, Sophie Cunningham, who reignited the transgender athlete debate, has sparked controversy among fans and media personalities.
The latest to weigh in on this issue is media personality Stephen A. Smith, who said there are people "negatively" using her as an excuse when she should be speaking up on these issues publicly.
"Nobody's blaming Caitlin Clark for it," Smith said on Friday's episode of First Take. "I'm simply saying that there's a lot of people that are being negatively affected because they're using her as a narrative and as an excuse to throw venom and hostility towards contemporaries. I'm saying when you see something like that happen, and you have the cachet to speak up about it, you should. That goes for all of us. I'm in the media. This is the position that I sit in. If I see somebody attacking an abundance of my contemporaries, and I believe that's unfair, I'll be ***** ed if I'm gonna be quiet. Why? Because I'm in a position where I can make a difference. Caitlin Clark is in a position where she can make a difference. I understand she's 24, but she ain't 14. She's smart. She knows how to speak."
While Smith believes Clark needs to speak out on these issues, Kevin Durant's brother, Tony Durant, feels the opposite. He responded to Smith's comments in the post's section on First Take's Instagram page:

Azzi Fudd was a surprise absentee in Friday's game between the Dallas Wings and Golden State Valkyries. Fudd wasn't on the injury report and seemed poised to start. However, she developed a sore knee during warm-ups and the Wings ruled her out at the last minute.
Here's what the Wings said:
"Dallas Wings guard Azzi Fudd has been ruled out for tonight's game against the Golden State Valkyries. Fudd went through warmups this evening and experienced right knee soreness. Out of an abundance of caution, she will not play tonight."
The Wings round off a grueling stretch of six games in 12 days on Sunday against the Lynx. Fudd's status for that contest is up in the air and will be disclosed before the matchup.
Shortly before her injury absence was announced, Fudd had performed a cartwheel while entering the arena. Given that she seemed in great spirits and was ready to play, Wings fans were concerned about her absence.

As in all sports, NFL teams need to hit on their draft picks, as their rosters are so expansive. It is imperative to leave a draft class with at least one to two starters and to be able to find depth pieces to support. In recent years, the Minnesota Vikings have struggled to find an abundance of quality, as Minnesota has drafted 28 players since 2022, and only four have turned out to be starters.
However, according to Alec Lewis of The Athletic, the rookies are showing out so far in training camp, with love being given to the later-round picks as well. Here are some of Lewis' thoughts:
Early returns look promising. First-round pick Caleb Banks responded from left foot surgery and is already mixing in with the starters. Second-round linebacker Jake Golday tipped a pass Saturday, evoking shades of edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel.
There has been positivity from the later-round picks, too. ***** istant head coach Frank Smith spent some time after Saturday's practice reviewing techniques with fullback Max Bredeson. Cornerback Chuck Demmings blanketed Jefferson and deflected a pass. Safety Jakobe Thomas continues to show up in all areas of Brian Flores' defense, and undrafted safety Jacob Thomas tends to play right alongside him.
This was a defensive-heavy draft class, and it is a promising sign to see that the bulk of the picks are performing well so far. It will be fascinating to see them in action in the preseason to see just how far they have come.

The Los Angeles Rams have an abundance of depth at tight end, which is a good thing because one of their key players is a bit banged up. Sean McVay told reporters on Monday that Davis Allen has a quad injury and will be out for "some time." Because it's a soft tissue injury, the team isn't going to rush him back.
Allen is in his fourth season with the Rams after being a fifth-round pick in 2023 out of Clemson.
Colby Parkinson, Terrance Ferguson and Tyler Higbee are the primary contributors at tight end, with rookie Max Klare also in the mix. Klare figures to get more reps with Allen out, which will only benefit the rookie out of Ohio State.
Allen caught 24 passes for 208 yards and three touchdowns last season, playing significant snaps after the team shifted toward more 13 personnel packages.

With high school soccer season just a couple of weeks away, here is the Enquirer's final list of position previews in girls soccer. We have saved the top forwards and goalscorers for last.
And what a list it is.
Greater Cincinnati high school girls soccer fans had much to enjoy as well in 2025, as there is an abundance of players who put up big numbers last season or who will play for major colleges after they graduate. Because of that, limiting to 10 players to spotlight, as we do for other positions, was impossible. So we are listing 16 players to watch.
Make sure to vote in the poll at the bottom of the story. The poll will close at 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 7. The USA Today Co. network is debuting a new polling service that allows readers to vote more often while protecting against fraudulent voting methods. Lucas Glover caused a real stir during the 3M Open last week.
Glover is one of the more experienced pros on the PGA Tour, and he is extremely outspoken with that.
The man from Greenville, South Carolina, proved that in abundance last week at TPC Twin Cities.
Glover's biggest pet peeve is AimPoint – the green-reading method that has become so popular among professional golfers over the past few years and, indeed, amateurs.
After holing a birdie putt on his 10th hole during the final round of the 3M Open on Sunday, Lucas Glover took off his golf shoes before leaving them on the side of the green.

TMZ founder Harvey Levin defended Dr. Anthony Fauci against a right-wing "witch hunt" after congressional Republicans grilled him about private diary entries from the COVID era that were leaked by Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) on Monday.
Opening his nearly five-minute statement saying he rarely uses TMZ to "vent personal feelings," Levin told viewers, "Watching Anthony Fauci before a congressional hearing taking the Fifth Amendment is just one of the most heartbreaking things I have seen in government in my lifetime."
While Levin said he did have problems with the way that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention "handled COVID," he added that he didn't think it was done "maliciously" but out of an abundance of caution.

He went on to call Fauci, who served as the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases from 1984 to 2022 before stepping into the role of chief medical adviser to the president in 2021, an "amazing public servant" for decades, noting how the work he did during the AIDS crisis of the late 80s and early 90s "really saved lives."

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korean authorities ordered civilians to evacuate on Tuesday after a suspected white phosphorus leak at a U.S. military base near the capital, Seoul.
Officials in the city of Pyeongtaek urged nearby residents to move to a safe location and avoid skin exposure after the leak at the Osan Air Base was detected at around 5 p.m. The alert was lifted several hours later following the completion of decontamination work, according to text messages sent out by the city.
The U.S. 51st Fighter Wing said it established a 300-meter cordon around the base "out of an abundance of caution" after experts conducting a routine inspection identified white phosphorus crystallization that left residue inside a munitions crate.
An explosive ordnance disposal unit was deployed and response plans were immediately activated to ensure the munitions remained fully contained, it said in a statement.
The cordon was lifted after emergency response personnel mitigated the situation, allowing the base to return to normal operations, it said. There were "no injuries resulting from this situation and no risk to personnel on or off installation."

There has been an abundance of NFL-caliber talent come through Eugene since 2020, with a high mark of 41 former Oregon Ducks hearing their names called in the NFL draft — and it's not just mid-to-late-round picks either.
From 2020-2025, seven Ducks were selected in the first round, showcasing the elite talent that Dan Lanning and his staff have not only brought to Eugene, but developed into players worthy of stardom in the NFL. More often than not, those former Oregon standouts have been productive in the league, living up the billing of being selected on the first night of the draft.
On Thursday, CBS Sports released a ranking of all 191 first-round picks since 2020, excluding the 2026 class (which also includes two former Ducks), as they haven't been able to take the field quite yet. Each first-rounder was divided into one of three categories: Best first-round decisions, solid picks with mixed returns and incomplete grades, and the most disappointing selections.
Let's check out where each of the seven first-round picks that came out of Oregon landed in the ranking.
You can probably predict who ended up here. In this top-tier category, four well-known pro Ducks appear: Justin Herbert (No. 6 overall), Penei Sewell (No. 14), Christian Gonzalez (No. 30) and Bo Nix (No. 32). The latter three have had strong team success during their time in the league, each helping lead their teams to the conference championship. Gonzalez went a step further, recording a crucial interception against the Nix-less Denver Broncos in the 2025 AFC Championship game that helped send the New England Patriots to the Super Bowl. While Herbert hasn't sniffed a conference championship yet, he's widely known as a top-10 quarterback in the league based off of pure talent, with team success predicted to come in the near future. All of whom were excellent selections by their respective teams.

Taco Bell has narrowed down its focus on ingredients linked to an ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreak that has sickened thousands of people nationwide. The suspected culprit: lettuce.
The fast-food chain said July 16 it had removed lettuce from one of its suppliers in select states after reports linked the ingredient to the growing cases of the stomach-churning parasitic infection that causes diarrhea and nausea across several states.
"Based on ongoing conversations with public health officials, and out of an abundance of caution, Taco Bell has taken immediate action to voluntarily remove potentially impacted lettuce from a supplier in select states," the company said in a statement.
The lettuce supplied by the vendor would be "indefinitely removed" from its supply chain nationwide and replaced within 24 hours in affected states, according to Taco Bell. The company did not identify the supplier or specify which states were affected by the removal.

As far as availability goes, Caitlin Clark has run into a rough patch these past few weeks, missing three of the Indiana Fever’s last five outings. On Sunday, though, Clark made her presence felt in the Fever’s 109-75 rout of the Las Vegas Aces.
After contributing 12 points, seven rebounds, and six ****** ists, CC got a shoutout from Stephanie White as the Fever head coach addressed the team in the locker room following the victory.
“Six players in double figures, took care of the ball…C, welcome back, baby!”
White’s praise drew a smile and hand gesture from Clark, as well as an abundance of reactions from fans on social media.
Earlier this season, there was plenty of buzz surrounding the dynamic between Clark and White. In late May, the two went viral after White was seen berating Clark on the bench during a blowout loss to the Portland Fire.

There are so many individual factors that went into the New York Knicks' historic playoff run that ultimately culminated in the franchise's first NBA championship in over 50 years, but above all else that quality that got them through it all was their connectivity.
That quality and the Knicks' devotion to it was something that both the Knicks players and their coach Mike Brown spoke about often as they were torching their opponents on the way to the NBA Finals. No one made it about themselves, no one strived for credit and whenever the occasion arose, they were quick to praise one another.
To win a NBA championship obviously takes talent and athleticism, but there's also so many layers of intangible qualities that go into making a team successful, above all else their connection and devotion to one another, what some call the power of friendship.
The Knicks had that in abundance and it was a quality that stood out so much that Los Angeles Lakers star Austin Reaves pointed to their connection as the main driving force of their championship during an interview with Dan Patrick during the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament.
"I think that shows on the basketball court," Reaves said (via Heavy.com). "They care for one another. They play for one another. And that's... something you want to build."

LAS VEGAS — Nestled in a low-riding chair wearing a sharp white polo and black shorts, it was easy for Magic star forward Paolo Banchero, stationed at Court 11 in the Las Vegas Convention Center, to blend in with the crowd while he supported his beloved Seattle Rotary AAU team.
Such is the nature of the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League, or EYBL for short. The thousands of kids scrimmaging nonstop throughout the day — surrounded by the flurry of activity from parents, scouts, agents and onlookers in between the individual courts — almost make him a secondary figure, allowing him to escape attention.
It’s a much harder task pulling that off at his day job. Banchero, a 6-foot-10 forward entering his fifth year in the NBA, is approaching a pivotal point in his young career. His style of play, a high-usage offensive engine unto himself — with a high motor, processing speed and unique skillset for someone his size — is hopeful of meshing seamlessly with a new head coach. Sean Sweeney, a former ***** istant coach under Mitch Johnson in San Antonio, joined the Orlando Magic following the Finals, looking to take the organization further forward than what his predecessor, Jamahl Mosley, could.
The underlying Banchero question has always been how to marry his versatility with his surroundings, all while producing efficient play. Advanced ***** ytics paint a wide-ranging picture of Banchero’s overall impact, as metrics can be influenced by ***** ing (personnel choices), tactics and strategy. Banchero ranks 97th in LEBRON, 146th in DARKO, 141st in LAKER and 56th in Player Efficiency Rating. Last season was the first, according to Cleaning the Glass, that the Magic weren’t a net negative with Banchero on the floor (Orlando was -17 in his playoff minutes, but was also -19 with him on the bench versus Detroit.)
Orlando is blessed with an abundance of additional playmakers — Jalen Sugs, Desmond Bane and Anthony Black are all capable of creation — but Banchero’s ***** ist rate, combined with how often he possesses the ball in the frontcourt, warrant additional conversations between Banchero and Sweeney for how to improve the Magic’s output.

Liverpool have a lot of change coming their way this summer.
The Anfield outfit have already been linked with an abundance of new players after they only finished fifth in the Premier League last time around.
Most people expected the Reds to easily retain the ******* le and perhaps even win the Premier League but, unfortunately for them, that was far from the case.
Even though many players are expected to join Liverpool, a lot could also be on their way out with several members of Andoni Iraola's squad reportedly on the chopping block.
Of course, the Spaniard will want to evaluate each of his players in Liverpool's pre-season but, for some, it already feels like they have one foot out of the door.

Broncos Wire's 91-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at fifth-year defensive lineman Matt Henningsen, No. 91.
Before the Broncos: Henningsen (6-3, 291 pounds) spent his college career deep in the Midwest, playing for the Wisconsin Badgers. Henningsen played from 2018-21. Following a redshirt freshman season, Henningsen spent five years with the Badgers, totaling 91 tackles (13 behind the line of scrimmage), eight sacks and three fumble recoveries (two returned for touchdowns). Henningsen earned third-team All-Big Ten honors as a senior, when he recorded a career-high 33 total tackles (13 solo, 20 ******* isted, 5.5 tackles for loss), three sacks and one pass deflection in 2021. He played in 42 games (29 starts) during his time at Wisconsin.
Broncos tenure: Coming off one of his best college season, Henningsen was selected by the Denver Broncos in the sixth round (206th overall) in the 2022 NFL draft. In his rookie season, Henningsen dressed for all 17 games (no starts), but recorded 21 total tackles (eight solo, 13 ******* isted, two tackles for loss), and one sack. In 2023, Henningsen again played in 17 games, totaling 19 tackles (10 solo, nine ******* isted) and two pass deflections. In 2024, Henningsen spent his season on the practice squad and did not appear on the football field. In 2025, Henningsen unfortunately suffered a torn Achilles in a joint practice with the San Francisco 49ers, ending his season before it even began.
Henningsen was brought back to the Broncos on a one-year deal in 2026.
Chances to make the 53-man roster: On the outside looking in. The past several seasons Henningsen has lost playing time, rather than gained it. In Broncos Wire's way-too-early 53-man roster, Henningsen was victim of one of the tougher cuts. Henningsen could end up back on the practice squad, but it's hard not to notice the abundance of young talent behind him.

Ask any New York Jets coaching staff member what separates good pass rushers from great ones, and many will give the same answer. It isn't just size or strength. It isn't even sack production, as hard as that may be to believe.
All of those ingredients help, but as simple as it sounds, the greats have to know how to 'win.' It's the ability to explode off the football before an offensive tackle has a chance to react.
That's one of the reasons why the Jets fell in love with second-overall pick David Bailey during the pre-draft process. They believe they see explosiveness (along with the other traits that were mentioned), and ladies and gentlemen, early signs suggest they may have been right.
Pass-rush technique can improve. Strength can be developed inside NFL weight rooms. Learning how to defend the run comes with experience. Explosiveness, however, is something players either possess or they don't. Bailey has that, and he has it in abundance. National experts agree.
ESPN recently described Bailey's first step for an update on every first-round draftee. He described the rookie's quickness as his most noticeable trait throughout spring practices. Add left tackle Olu Fashanu to Bailey's list of admirers. He offered perhaps the greatest compliment possible.

A recall involving hundreds of thousands of bags of popular Zapp's and Dirty brand potato chips has been classified under the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's most serious warning level due to the risk of salmonella contamination.
The FDA classified the voluntary recall as a Class I recall, its highest risk category, on July 1. According to the agency, a Class I recall means there is "a reasonable probability" that consuming or being exposed to the affected product could cause serious adverse health consequences or death.
The chips were first recalled in May by Utz Quality Foods, a subsidiary of Utz Brands, after the company learned that a seasoning made with dry milk powder supplied by a third-party manufacturer could potentially contain salmonella. Though the affected seasoning batches tested negative before being used, Utz said it issued the recall out of an abundance of caution.
The company has said it has received no reports of illnesses linked to the recalled products.
Consumers who have the affected chips should not eat them and should throw them away. Retailers have also been instructed to remove the products from store shelves.

In-play, in-picture adverts will not be part of ITV's coverage of the Nations Championship in July, but the 20-second slots, shown before a scrum, are set to return for the November Tests and next year's Six Nations.
The abundance of opportunities elsewhere on ITV's schedule in July, with an expanded 48-team football World Cup dominating the airwaves, means advertisers' spending has been directed elsewhere.
During their debut at this year's Six Nations, the scrum slots, one of which was available per half, were bought up by blue-chip companies such as Samsung and Virgin Atlantic.
During the segments, audio from the stadium dipped, the screen was split in half and an advert was played in the right-hand part of the screen. Some viewers criticised the concept as intrusive.
Six Nations chief executive Tom Harrison said the adverts may be "a little bit uncomfortable" for viewers in the UK who, unlike those in the US and Australia, are only used to adverts appearing around, rather than during, play.

Although not many of them have been able to retain a position with the first team, the Real Madrid academy has still churned out some very promising and talented players in the last few years. One of these players, Raul Asencio is still a part of the first team, while another of them, Thiago Pitarch, also impressed a lot with his performances under Alvaro Arbeloa in the second half of the last season.
Meanwhile, there were three more players who impressed with their performances during the last season, although not with the Merengue team, i.e., Nico Paz, Chema Andres, and Jacobo Ramon.
All three of them seem ready to return to the white club, who still retain 50% rights of all of these players, and have several rights on them that can facilitate a return. They have all been linked with a return right this summer as well. However, according to a report from Diario AS, all three of them are set to stay put in their respective clubs, with the prospect of returning to Real Madrid in 2027 still alive.
One of these players, Nico Paz, seemed highly likely to return to the Merengue team this summer. However, he has asked to continue playing and growing at Como for now, aiming for a return to Spain in 2027, when Los Vikingos would be able to get him back for €10 million.
His teammate at Como, Jacobo Ramon’s return is currently difficult, mainly because of the overabundance of center-backs in the team, coupled with Mourinho’s desire for another experienced player for this position. Meanwhile, he is also enjoying interest from other top clubs, including Chelsea.

With the arid Miami weather, some Scots opted for the signature “taps aff” look, with the scent of an abundance of sun cream and lager in the air.

The NFL has officially released the dates and locations for all joint practices scheduled for August.
The New York Giants will hold a joint practice with the Miami Dolphins on Thursday, August 20. Big Blue will practice against the Dolphins on the road in Miami Gardens, as the teams will face each other just two days later in Week 2 of the preseason.
Currently, this is the only joint practice on the Giants’ preseason schedule. It will provide an excellent benchmark for the team’s progress with just one preseason game remaining, particularly given New York’s abundance of young talent that will need to perform throughout August.
The Dolphins will host the Giants at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, on Saturday, August 22, at 4:00 p.m. ET.

(Oil & Gas 360) – This week marked a notable shift in market sentiment. For months, energy markets were focused on disruption, conflict, and supply risk.
Now, attention is turning toward reopening trade routes, restoring production, and **** sing whether the world is moving from a supply crisis toward a period of greater abundance. Prices moved lower, but capital continued flowing toward oil, gas, LNG, and power infrastructure, suggesting the industry remains focused on long-term demand growth.
Brent crude declined after Israel and Hezbollah agreed to a ceasefire, while the U.S.–Iran both digitally signed a memorandum of understanding on ending the war, although a planned meeting on Friday in Switzerland was postponed. President Trump earlier in the week defended the deal, saying he wanted to avoid an economic catastrophe. Meanwhile, Iran resumed exports, reportedly shipping 20 million barrels following the agreement.
Why it matters:
Markets are removing some of the geopolitical risk premium that drove prices higher earlier this year. The focus is shifting from disruption to how quickly supply can return.
Momentum continued building around the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz as tanker traffic resumed and shipping flows gradually normalized, although questions grow over Iran's transit terms.

Major League Baseball (MLB) found itself mired in controversy this past week after three San Francisco Giants players—Landen Roupp, J.T. Brubaker, and Ryan Walker—inscribed Bible verses on their hats that had been designed for the team's Pride night. Another, Sam Hentges, declined to wear the hat altogether. Whether people were mad at the players for their lack of pride or at the team and league for their alleged abundance of pride depends on vantage point. But people were mad.
Put differently, we are living in Groundhog Day, but make it gay. We've had this fight before. Around and around we have gone. A lot of people are wrong. So why are we still doing this?
The MLB may be wondering the same thing. "We have told teams, in terms of actual uniforms, hats, bases that we don't think putting logos on them is a good idea just because of the desire to protect players," said MLB commissioner Rob Manfred in 2023, "not putting them in a position of doing something that may make them uncomfortable because of their personal views." The Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers, however, have continued incorporating the Pride uniforms because of a standing agreement.
This fight is not constrained to the outfield or the infield or the minefield-ridden culture war battlefield. "I write with grave concern over your reported decision to issue a formal warning to three Major League Baseball (MLB) players for publicly expressing their Christian faith," Sen. Josh Hawley (R–Mo.) said in a letter to Manfred. "You must answer for what appears to be a pattern of discrimination within MLB against baseball players who profess their Christian faith." The senator was joined by other government actors promising to intervene, including the U.S. Department of Justice's Harmeet Dhillon, who referred the league to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission for an investigation.
"This routine verbal warning not to wear the hat in future games is not disciplinary and had absolutely nothing to do with the content of the message," the league said in a statement. "We respect players' right to free expression. However, writing of any kind, with any message, is prohibited per Major League Baseball's uniform regulations….We have given the same warning numerous times in the past to players for messages such as 'Dad,' 'Happy Mother's Day, I Love Mom' and names of family members."
