US actor Tom Cruise has surprised a British man who spent a year completing a series of extreme sporting challenges to raise money for charity.
Lloyd Kembrey, a facilities manager at the University of Bristol, took on the challenges to fundraise for children's hospice charity Jessie May.
His connection to the charity was born from his twin cousins, Francesca and Josephine, who were diagnosed with the life-limiting condition Sanfilippo disease type A when they were three-and-a-half years old. Both died in their teens.
Kembrey was inspired to undertake a number of exhilarating challenges in order to honour their memory and support other families facing similar circumstances.
The challenges he faced included a 31-mile ice skating ultramarathon in Finland, climbing the height of Mount Everest on a climbing wall and a 94-mile hike along southern England's Jurassic Coast.

Blaming declining mall traffic for retail store failures ignores what's actually happening.
"Malls' H1 2026 momentum continued going into the second half of the year, with year-over-year (YoY) visits to shopping centers up across all three formats ******* yzed (indoor, open-air, and outlet) in July 2026," according to data from Placer.ai.
Retailers like Claire's, Joann, and Macy's, which have either fully closed or have shut down dozens of locations, may have failed to capitalize on mall foot traffic, but it's unfair to say that people did not visit malls.
"Open-air shopping centers — which have led the category since the beginning of the year — continued their outperformance, with YoY traffic up 5.1%, followed closely by indoor malls (+4.3%)," the data showed.
Francesca's, a mall staple since its launch in 1999, closed all its more than 450 stores in March and has now received court permission to liquidate its remaining ******* ets.

GENEVA, Sept 7 (Reuters) - A U.N. expert said on Monday that Israeli clearance of rubble in Gaza could destroy valuable evidence of "atrocity crimes" and prevent the recovery of human remains.
Israel's ****** ault ‌on Gaza — started after the deadly raid into Israel by Hamas in October 2023 — has generated ‌around 61 million tons of wreckage and debris that could take seven years to clear, according to the United Nations.
Francesca Albanese, the U.N. expert on the Palestinian territories, said evidence should be gathered and human remains identified before full clearance started.
She issued a statement headlined: "UN expert warns Israeli rubble-clearing could erase traces of atrocity crimes" and said Palestinians should be behind any plans to remove waste.

Few retail chains that filled malls in the 1980s and 1990s still exist today.
Teenage me could have shopped at Chess King for shiny shirts, visited Gadzooks for baggy pants, or gone a little classier and purchased dressier clothes at Structure. All of those chains were fairly, if not very, popular for a minute, and none of them exist now.
Former Tory Burch Chief Client Officer Francesca Danzi told Forbes that it's a major challenge for a brand to remain relevant across decades.
"Enhancing retail experience is key and goes beyond adding omnichannel capabilities that boost convenience. We are witnessing the rise of experiential retail that is reshaping the store of the future," she said.
Danzi does not see the so-called retail apocalypse as a crisis where stores are closing, but as an opportunity to right-size store portfolios.

British number one Katie Boulter was dumped out of the US Open in the second round as she won just one game in a 58-minute demolition by Karolina Muchova.
The match, originally scheduled to be played on one of the outer courts, was moved to the 14,000-capacity Louis Armstrong Stadium after heavy rain in New York.
But fans who had counted themselves lucky to have gained a third match on their day session ticket may have been left feeling short-changed, as Boulter fell to a swift 6-1 6-0 defeat by the Czech seventh seed.
Francesca Jones had better fortune as she returned to win her first-round match against Poland's Magda Linette after it was interrupted by rain on Tuesday.
Boulter's serve let her down as she hit eight double faults and no aces, while she won just 33% of points behind her first serve.

A socialist candidate for governor in Wisconsin with an extensive history of inflammatory online posts once described America as "an abundance of suffering," Fox News Digital has found.
"I want this country to stop being an abundance of suffering but a wealth of opportunity," reads a Jan. 20, 2022 X post from Wisconsin state Rep. Francesca Hong, who is running in the Democratic Party's primary election to become the state's top official.
"We can do this by providing equal rights to Black and Brown folks," the post continues. "Elect more Black and Brown folks who won't be racist obstructionists. We can all be better and do so much more."
Wisconsin Gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong waves as she acknowledges the crowd during a campaign rally on August 2, 2026 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The midterm primary rush continues on Tuesday as voters in six states choose their parties' candidates in pivotal races that could decide control of Congress.
Most eyes will be on South Carolina, where Republicans are holding a special Senate primary to choose a new nominee following the sudden death of longtime incumbent Lindsey Graham in July. His sister, Darline Graham, was chosen by South Carolina's governor to fill her brother's seat until January. She announced a week later that she would run for a full six-year term.
Republicans aren't clearing the way for her nomination, though. Nine other candidates have jumped into the race, including GOP Reps. Ralph Norman and Russell Fry, and former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford. Polls have shown Graham and Norman ahead of the field, but both are well short of the 50% support they'd need to avoid a runoff. If no one receives at least half the vote, the top two finishers will go to a runoff on Aug. 25.
In Wisconsin, Democratic Gov. Tony Evers has chosen not to seek another term, setting off a messy battle between the progressive and moderate wings of the party over who should be their nominee to replace him. Francesca Hong, a democratic socialist state lawmaker, has held a consistent lead throughout the primary. But Evers has said he believes Hong may be too far to the left to defeat the likely Republican nominee, Rep. Tom Tiffany, in the general election. Instead, the governor has thrown his support behind Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, who had briefly dropped out of the race before resuming his campaign with less than a month left in the primary. Polls suggest Crowley has an enormous amount of ground to make up if he wants to pull off a surprising victory.

Wisconsin democratic socialist state Rep. Francesca Hong, the Democratic primary frontrunner in the race for governor, sidestepped repeated questions from Politico reporter Jonathan Martin Tuesday at Marquette University in Milwaukee about whether she still wants to abolish police after a televised debate in which she pledged to preserve law enforcement funding amid scrutiny of her previous position.
"So, this system is not working," Hong said. "If we want to be serious, we better be putting these billions into things we know prevent crime."
Martin asked whether Hong still wanted to abolish police in the long term. Hong did not answer yes or no, instead calling for "systems of care" and redirecting criminal justice spending before a campaign aide ushered her away.
"I believe that we have to be serious about public safety, and I'm going to be a governor that is more serious than anyone else in making sure that we are building systems of care," Hong said.

Democratic Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong's campaign told Fox News Digital Tuesday that she does not recall posting on social media in favor of abolishing the Senate in 2021 and said that was not her current position.
Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) co-chair Megan Romer went viral Sunday for confirming that the DSA supported abolishing the Senate, eliminating national borders and prisons, replacing the presidency and the Supreme Court, and more during an interview with Shannon Bream on "Fox News Sunday."
Republican candidate for Wisconsin governor Tom Tiffany said in a post to X that Hong believed in all the ideas mentioned in the viral video.
"This sounds a lot like DSA-backed FrancescaHongWI. Does she want to abolish the police? Yep. Does she want to abolish prisons? Absolutely. Did she call for abolishing the U.S. Senate? Yes. Socialism is knocking on Wisconsin's door. This November, we slam it shut," Tiffany wrote.

The New York Mets have one of the best shortstops in baseball in Francisco Lindor, but could that change by the time the 2026 Major League Baseball season comes to an end?
First and foremost, it shouldn't. There are few shortstops in the league better than Lindor when he's healthy. Last season, he slashed .267/.346/.466 with an .811 OPS, 31 homers, 86 RBIs, and 31 stolen bases in 160 games played. He was a 5.8-WAR player. The year before, he was a 6.8-WAR player. He also won't be a free agent until after the 2031 season. There's no reason for the Mets to move on from one of the best shortstops in the game, but sports radio host Mike Francesca went deep down the rabbit hole and claimed that the Mets are going to try "very, very hard to trade Lindor."
“The Cohens loved him, Cohen’s wife loved him. And then they went out and brought in a guy who more than doubled his salary, which hit him right between the eyes, and I’m going to tell you something, it would have hit a lot of stars between the eyes. … So, where does that leave you? I don’t think there’s any question the Mets are going to try very, very hard to trade Lindor," Francesca said.
One thing that should give Mets fans hope is the fact that The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal shut down the noise.

The former BET host faces aggravated battery and child cruelty charges as an ongoing legal matter involving his wife continues.
Former BET "Rap City" host and longtime radio personality Big Tigger was arrested in Georgia over Father's Day weekend.
According to TMZ, the 53-year-old, whose real name is Darian Morgan, was booked into the Fulton County Jail on charges of aggravated battery and cruelty to children on Saturday (June 20). He bonded out that same day after posting surety bonds totaling $10,000, with the majority of the amount tied to the aggravated battery charge.
The news of Tigger's arrest comes two weeks after he was named as the lead suspect in a domestic abuse case involving his wife, Alicia Brown. While she issued a statement clarifying that she did not call her husband "an abuser," the case remains ongoing. Tigger then spent four days away from his morning show on Atlanta's V-103 before returning on June 12 to deny allegations that he ever abused Brown, nor did he have an affair with his co-host, Franchesca Amiker.
"Over the past several days, there has been significant public discussion and speculation regarding my personal life," Tigger said in a statement at the time. "I understand this can happen when you are a public figure, and I appreciate the support and concern that so many people have shown. … It's important to clarify that Francesca and I have never been anything more than friends and respected colleagues."

Alexa Demie is comfortable with her "level" of fame, although that may change following the finale of the hit HBO show Euphoria.

In a profile in The Hollywood Reporter, Demie, who plays Maddy Perez on Euphoria, confirms she's seen all of the opinions on her relatively lowkey stardom as sent to her by friends, and she's content with where she is.

"It's like, did you ever think that I don't want it?" she said of her status in Hollywood. "People really take the authority out of your hands. What happened to my ability to choose? I like my life like this, and I wouldn't change it."
Demie also expressed gratitude for her breakout role as Perez, propelling her into a spotlight that is at odds with her more private self. "If I didn't have that experience, I'd be hiding up there like Enya," she explained, gesturing to the Hollywood hills, similar to how singer Enya famously lives in a large, secluded mansion. "But that life is always there for me, and what I'm learning is that I can have both."
In other news, Demie also confirmed she's not retiring from acting. The unverified rumors were taken out of context from an interview she did on The A24 Podcast where she complained to Nathan Fielder that early in her career, the actress was disheartened by being passed over in favor of white actresses.
