The San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams met at Melbourne Cricket Ground at 8:35 p.m. PT on Thursday, and while Kyle Shanahan's team took an early 3-0 lead, they lost one of their rookies to injury.
Before the first quarter ended, The Athletic's Matt Barrows reported that wide receiver De'Zhaun Stribling was in the blue medical tent. Then, the team announced at the end of the quarter that the wideout is dealing with an ankle injury and is questionable to return.
Stribling was San Francisco's top selection in the 2026 NFL Draft, following a collegiate career split between Washington State, Oklahoma State and Ole Miss. He was a key piece of the offensive game plan during the preseason.
If the 23-year-old can't go, the 49ers will be left with Mike Evans, Deebo Samuel, Demarcus Robinson, Jacob Cowing and KhaDarel Hodge at wide receiver for the rest of the game.

Last Word On Hockey's Puck Drop Previews are back for the 2026-27 season! As the regular season approaches, Last Word will preview each team's current outlook and stories to watch for the upcoming year. We'll also do our best to project how things will go for each team throughout the campaign. Today, we're previewing the 2026-27 Minnesota Wild.
There's been plenty of chatter about the 2026-27 Minnesota Wild. The main offseason rabble has been whether or not Quinn Hughes will sign an extension. Minnesota general manager Bill Guerin was able to weaponize the salary cap **** e since the buyouts of Zach Parise and Ryan Suter were greatly reduced. Guerin has been taking care of players like Brock Faber and Kirill Kaprizov.
However, the Hughes question hangs over the franchise's head like a cloud. The Wild rolled the dice to get the high-flying defender from the Vancouver Canucks. However, it would be a disaster if the Olympic Gold Medal winner doesn't stay beyond this season. The Wild have only made the Western Conference Final once in the franchise's history. Minnesota knows the pressure is on to at least get back there.
Guerin fulfulled his promise of making the team into a Stanley Cup contender. He managed to give Kaprizov the deal that would keep the dynamic forward in the fold. However, getting Hughes proved to be a masterstroke. It cemented the Wild as a contender despite being in one of the toughest divisions in hockey.
Minnesota looked the part of a contender by finishing 10th in scoring, fourth in defence, and seventh in points. The Wild even broke some of their bad postseason luck by getting past the Dallas Stars. However, the same old Wild came back in the second round in a loss to the Colorado Avalanche. The Wild were exposed as not having as much depth as the Avs and not having enough team speed. Minnesota has made plenty of progress, but the team still has a long way to go.

Chelsea's Women's Soccer Team has been the most successful in England over the past decade. They have invested a lot of money in bringing quality players to play for the club.
However, their most recent investment is all about the well-being of their players.
They became the first English club to set up a fund to freeze eggs and provide other fertility services to their players. Chelsea follows the NWSL and the WNBA, as both leagues offer this to their players.
Treatments within this fund include freezing eggs, IVF, and gynaecological treatments. According to The Observer, the fund is worth at least £189,000 ($255,448).
The cost of egg freezing at a clinic is around £7,000. As part of the fund, Chelsea players are allowed to either freeze their eggs or avail other fertility treatments at the Fertility Plus Clinic in London.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Spencer Jones hit a two-out RBI double against his hometown team to start a four-run rally in the second inning, and the New York Yankees beat the San Diego Padres 5-1 on Saturday.
Carlos Rodón and four relievers held the Padres to three hits as the Yankees (81-61) pulled within a victory of clinching their 34th straight winning season. They've won five of seven games and 13 of 19, and are in control of the American League's top wild-card spot.
The Padres, who have lost six of eight, came into the day a half-game ahead of Arizona for the third National League wild card.
The Yankees drew seven walks, with three of those players scoring, and loaded the bases in three different innings.
Jones, a rookie who attended La Costa Canyon High in Carlsbad, doubled into the right-field corner off left-hander Robbie Ray in the second to bring in Ben Rice, who hit a leadoff single and advanced on George Lombard Jr.'s grounder.

Michigan women's basketball guard Brooke Quarles Daniels had an excellent journey in her four years of college basketball.
The 5-foot-7 guard from Macomb, Mich. played two years at Oakland, averaging 12.8 points, 2.9 ****** ists and 2.2 steals per game while named to the All-Horizon League Second Team twice, as Freshman of the Year in 2023. Then, she transferred to the Wolverines, representing her home state for two seasons that took her from a defensive sparkplug off the bench to a senior veteran leader, standout defender on a national scale and an Elite Eight starter.
Quarles Daniels was second in the Big Ten with 2.4 steals per game in conference play, averaging 5.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 1.9 ****** ists and 2.1 steals per game alongside a 1.7 ****** ist-to-turnover ratio in her final season for Michigan.
"Brooke, she's one of the hardest workers on the team, and she's given us literally everything she could possibly give to our team," junior guard Olivia Olson said March 30 following the Elite Eight loss. "With defense and just pressing all the time and just being a leader for our team, like she's really given everything. So it kind of just was like that, 'This is how you're going to go out. You're going to go out doing the same thing as you always have.' "
But now, thanks to an Aug. 18 ruling, Quarles Daniels isn't necessarily going out just yet. As part of a California lawsuit to gain extra eligibility, Quarles Daniels was among a group of Class of 2022 athletes who, via court ruling, were allowed to enter the transfer portal, entering the portal that same day, and committing to South Carolina on Aug. 28.

Leeds United have added another attacking option to their squad with Jean-Mattéo Bahoya arriving from Eintracht Frankfurt on a season-long loan.
The deal includes a mandatory €30 million purchase clause, meaning the 21-year-old is expected to make his move to Elland Road permanent next summer.
Bahoya spent the past two-and-a-half years in Germany after joining Frankfurt from Angers in January 2024. He made 78 competitive appearances for the Bundesliga club, scoring seven goals, and featured 37 times last season, including eight outings in the Champions League.
The French youth international has earned a reputation for his outstanding acceleration and holds the Bundesliga sprint record after reaching 37.16 km/h.
He has five France Under-21 caps and two goals to his name and becomes Leeds' seventh and final signing of the summer.

A day after the 53-man roster cutdowns, the Cleveland Browns roster is already changing from the initial 53 that we were given yesterday evening. The team made one waiver claim, one I'm personally a fan of, claiming corner Toriano Pride Jr. from the Buffalo Bills. In a corresponding move, the team waived defensive end Julian Okwara to make room for Pride.
Pride was a seventh-round pick for the Bills this year who was competing for a nickel corner spot but does have the flexibility to play outside and provides a ton of upside and much-needed depth at the position. Pride is undersized at 5-foot-10 and 185 pounds, but he is a great athlete with track speed, running a 4.32 40-yard dash.
In addition to adding Pride and waiving Okwara, the Browns added the following ten players to their practice squad on Monday: CB Myles Bryant, DE Logan Fano, OT KT Leveston, P Wes Pahl, CB D'Angelo Ross, DT Tyreak Sapp, DE Khordae Sydnor, S Zion Washington, LB Nathaniel Watson, and WR Kole Wilson.

The Twins have officially selected the contract of top prospect Walker Jenkins, who will make his long-awaited MLB debut on Friday night at Target Field against the Chicago White Sox.
Interestingly, the corresponding roster move was to option outfielder Alan Roden back to Triple-A St. Paul. What that means, at least for now, is that Byron Buxton isn't going back to the injured list after aggravating his hip injury on Tuesday in Sacramento.
Saints reliever Woo-Suk Go was designated for **** ignment to make room for Jenkins on the Twins' 40-man roster.
Roden was one of the two players the Twins got back from the Blue Jays in last summer's already-infamous Louis Varland trade. The 26-year-old hasn't yet proven to be anything more than a "Quad-A" player. He had a .909 OPS in 33 games for St. Paul this year but has a .647 OPS with no home runs in 79 plate appearances for the 2026 Twins.
Dating back to his time with the Blue Jays, Roden has a career .915 OPS in 136 Triple-A games and a .586 OPS in 232 MLB PAs. The Twins aren't necessarily giving up on him, but it's hard to see how he fits into their future plans with Jenkins and Emmanuel Rodriguez penciled in as long-term outfield options.

Arlington Heights may still be in contention as the future home of the Chicago Bears, according to new comments from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who remains directly involved in discussions about the team's stadium search.
In recent months, Bears officials have repeatedly emphasized that their focus is on Hammond, Indiana, where they have been conducting feasibility studies on two potential sites. One of those locations has already been deemed viable. But Goodell's remarks this week suggest the possibility of an Illinois option remains alive.
The commissioner spoke during the NFL owners meeting in Atlanta, where he said, "We want to make sure that Arlington Heights and Illinois have an opportunity, as well as Indiana, to put their best foot forward."
The Bears own 326 acres in Arlington Heights, the former site of Arlington International Racecourse.
Goodell confirmed he has been in recent contact with Illinois lawmakers about the team's future.

A scary scene unfolded on Aug. 14 on PFT Live when co-host Michael Holley became overheated and fainted on camera.
One week later, Holley returned to the show with co-host Mike Florio. Holley explained what happened and offered an update on how he's doing now.
"What a week, Mike," Holley said to Florio. "What a moment. I gotta tell you. You handled yourself great. Thank you for talking with [producer Kristen Coleman], because what you guys don't know… When I went down, one thing I did have, one thing that didn't go down, was my IFB. So, my IFB was in my ear. And I could hear this conversation. 'Hey, does somebody have Holley's wife's number?' And I heard something about emergency services. I said, 'Who are you talking about? Oh, they're talking about me.'"
"And then I was on the floor… And I'm telling you, this is so ridiculous. This is a ridiculous part of our business," Holley continued. "My first thought was, 'That's going on the internet.' And my second thought was, 'Well, now, look.' And I saw, I think at that point it was 8:42, 8:43, something like that. I said, 'Well, 17 minutes left in the show. Let me just put the microphone back up here. I'll sit down. I'll finish the show.'
"And I try to do that, and you guys are like, 'Are you nuts? Get out of here. Get yourself some help.' Thank you for continuing to talk, continuing to talk through it, really. I think it brought me back a little earlier than maybe I would have. But, in all seriousness, people, I mean, it was scary. It was a scary situation."

Some of the world's best riders are ready to take on Welsh roads as the Tour of Britain Women comes to Wales for two days.
The biggest women's road cycling race in the UK, which began in ***** bria on Wednesday and ends in Warwickshire on Sunday, 23 August, is taking place across five stages for the first time, with two of them in Wales.
Stage three will see riders tackle a 104.7km route from Mold to the iconic Great Orme in Llandudno, then on Saturday they travel 138.3km from Llanidloes to Hay-on-Wye for stage four, with both stages promising a challenging weekend of racing.
It will be the first time Mold has hosted the start of a stage and the first time the area has hosted the women's race, with Flintshire having previously welcomed the men's Tour.
Powys will again welcome riders to its roads on Saturday, having hosted stages of both the women's and men's races in the area since 2010.

After a summer of on-and-off interest, Jhon Lucumi turned down more lucrative offers and got the move he reportedly wanted all along, joining Juventus after four seasons at Bologna. It's the kind of signing that typically doesn't generate much noise on its own: a 28-year-old defender with no Champions League pedigree to speak of, arriving for a fee that won't make any end of summer record boards.
But I think there's more than meets the eye with this transfer.
Lucumí often gets categorized as a classic ball-playing center back — calm in possession, accurate in distribution, and composed under pressure. While true, that label undersells his real profile. He's a defender defined less by highlight-reel flash and more by relentless consistency — a high-floor player whose value lies in making the complex look routine. He executes the required tackles, holds his **** e, and makes the simple, smart pass time after time.
With Lucumí, there are no surprises — just dependable, high-level quality.
Bologna rarely used Lucumí like a traditional, static center back. Across matches against Juventus and Napoli, he occupied virtually every defensive role across the backline — anchoring as the deepest defender, stepping into central midfield, or sliding out to cover the box. In one stretch against Napoli, he seamlessly shifted between left back, left center back, and right center back as phases of play demanded. Far from looking improvised, these rotations were clearly by design; Bologna's structure fluidly reorganized around his movements.

Celtics Have an Incredible Record When This Bench Player Scores 10+ Points originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
We all know the Celtics have had star players over the years, such as Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, who do most of the heavy lifting, but the role players and supporting cast have done their part as well.
It's arguably just as important to have quality players off the bench and around the stars, as it's a team sport that teams rarely find success in when only one or two players thrive.
The Celtics have mastered the supporting cast role/s well in the past, and they'll need it now more than ever in the 2026-27 season, with changes to the roster having taken place this summer.
The Celtics are going to rely on getting production from players like Payton Pritchard and Derrick White this season, but they'll need their second unit to bring something to the table while some of the big names rest.

The man who pioneered wholesale change in sports media with the founding of ESPN has died.
Bill Rasmussen, the entrepreneur who conceived the 24-hour cable sports network ESPN, died on Tuesday at age 93, the network announced. Rasmussen, along with his son Scott, famously came up with the idea for ESPN while stuck in traffic traveling to the Jersey Shore. Now, nearly 50 years later, ESPN is a behemoth prepared to broadcast the first Super Bowl in the network's history next February.
"Bill was a remarkable man – a visionary and an innovator who conceived the idea of a network entirely devoted to sports," ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro said in a statement. "Quite simply, none of us would be here today if it wasn't for Bill's passion and all the hard work and entrepreneurial spirit he put into building ESPN in the late 1970s – key aspects of our company culture that still carry on to this day."
Rasmussen's time at ESPN was essential but short-lived. The network launched in 1979 on the back of emerging satellite technology and funding from Getty Oil. The early days of ESPN were programmed with the flagship SportsCenter news and highlights show surrounded by a hodgepodge of live sports rights. Securing early-round NCAA Tournament broadcasts in March of 1980 proved to be a springboard for the fledgling network, helping bring ESPN into the mainstream.
Rasmussen left ESPN in October 1980 just over a year after its formal launch. Despite his brief tenure, his impact on the sports media industry was profound.

Ennis Rakestraw entered Monday night's Detroit Lions scrimmage needing something positive to happen.
The former second-round pick had watched his standing in Detroit's secondary slip during training camp, struggled in the preseason opener against Cincinnati and found himself working primarily with the second-team defense. With Nick Whiteside emerging as one of the surprises of camp and other young defensive backs pushing for opportunities, Rakestraw's margin for error was getting smaller.
Then Monday happened.
Rakestraw delivered easily one of his best performances of the summer, showing the physicality, instincts and playmaking ability the Lions believed they were getting when they selected him No. 61 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. It was only one practice, but for a player fighting to change the direction of his camp, it was an important one.
Rakestraw announced himself immediately during the scrimmage. On his first snap, he aggressively attacked the line of scrimmage and delivered a strong hit on running back Jacob Saylors. One play later, he came off the corner on a blitz and dropped Saylors for a loss.

Rose Zhang said a "topped" shot on the back nine of her first round at The Standard Portland Classic got worse as the week went on. On Saturday, she even had treatment from a physio in the middle of the round and looked like she might not finish.
"Honestly, I felt like I put up a fight," Zhang told Golf Channel following the third round. "I know that I wasn't good at hiding it, which I wish I was. That I was playing tennis out there grunting. I felt like, you know, I just tried my best and that's kind of what you have to do in golf."
Zhang showed up again on Sunday and gutted it out, closing with a 68 to finish in a share of eighth. She is entered into next week's event in Canada, the final event before U.S. Solheim Cup team qualifying ends. This marked the former Stanford star's first top 10 since the Ford Championship back in late March.

Barcelona have completed the sale of Ferran Torres to PSG, with the Spanish forward leaving to reunite with Luis Enrique.
The Catalan club ran the risk of seeing the World Cup hero leave for free at the end of next season and chose to cash in after he expressed his desire to move.
Ferran leaves after four and a half seasons at the Catalan club, which were a mixed bag, but after arguably his two best seasons at Barça.
Now, according to SPORT, the former Manchester City forward's move to PSG has handed Barça a massive financial boost.
The operation is expected to generate around €50 million in FFP for the Catalans, which could help them with their own signings this summer.

Borussia Dortmund warmed up for next weekend's Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup against Bayern Munich with a 2-2 home friendly draw with Roma on Saturday.
After the new Dortmund squad was presented to fans before kick-off, those in the almost sold-out stadium were treated to an open match with plenty of chances at both ends.
The game began with two early blows for Dortmund. Argentinian Paulo Dybala gave the Italians an early lead with a left-footed shot from close range. A short time later, Bryan Cristante made it 2-0 with a header from a corner.
Julian Ryerson's goal in the 12th minute and Serhou Guirassy's strike in the 28th then made it 2-2 for the home side.
Dortmund's first competitive test of the new season awaits next Saturday. The Black and Yellows, Bundesliga runners-up last term, host double winners Bayern in the Super Cup.

After an edgy win against Dundee in the opening gameweek, the reigning champions Celtic destroyed Kilmarnock in their own backyard by scripting an emphatic 5-1 victory. But a tricky test awaits them on Saturday evening, with Dundee United set to host Martin O'Neill's men in the second round of the Scottish League Cup.
The Tangerines dominated this fixture last season, defeating Celtic at Tannadice Park on both occasions. However, the Hoops secured a thumping 4-0 win in Glasgow earlier this year, and a dismal defeat against Hearts last weekend exposed their frailty in the defensive third. Heartbreak in the Cup final against St Mirren prevented them from achieving a domestic treble, and the Glasgow giants must stay cautious to avoid another upset on the road.
Celtic have so far relied on Viljami Sinisalo, who replaced injured Kasper Schmeichel and cemented the 'number 1' spot at the back end of the previous campaign. Ross Doohan has not been involved at all since his move from Aberdeen last summer, and the Scottish custodian would once again find himself as the understudy to the Finnish shot-stopper.
GLASGOW, SCOTLAND – JANUARY 10: Benjamin Nygren of Celtic celebrates after he scores his team's third goal during the Premier League match between Celtic and Dundee United at Celtic Park on January 10, 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland. (Photo by Ian MacNicol/Getty Images)
A fresh injury setback would keep Alistair Johnston sidelined, and the gaffer might opt for Colby Donovan ahead of Anthony Ralston on the right. The club have yet to bring in a new left-back to deputise for Kieran Tierney, and the Tartan Army international must retain his starting status in the defensive third. Liam Scales is available for selection after serving a two-game suspension. But the balance and stability offered by Cameron Carter-Vickers and Auston Trusty should not be compromised to incorporate the Irishman.
