Few, if any, movie stars achieve the level of celebrity of Paul Newman without good fortune. No one recognized that more than the screen legend himself.

Newman's luck did not begin with his three-year stint in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He understood during his years in the Pacific (and then in Hollywood) that fate fell in his favor more than once.

While serving his country, forces beyond his control likely saved Newman's life. If a pilot in his squadron hadn't come down with an ear issue, Newman might have died at Okinawa—one of the bloodiest battles in military history. Then Newman was supposed to take part in the invasion of mainland ***** an. Dubbed Operation Downfall, Allied commanders called it off after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Newman, who died on September 26, 2008, at the age of 83, admittedly didn't fully consider the potential consequences when he enlisted.

"I thought it would be a big adventure," Newman said of joining the military during wartime. "I was really dumb. I never considered that it might be dangerous."

Born on January 26, 1925, in Ohio, Newman was in his first year at Ohio University when he dropped out. Newman signed up for the Navy with the intent of becoming a pilot. He never made it to the ***** pit after a supposedly routine exam revealed he was colorblind.

Newman pivoted from that diagnosis and began training as a rear gunner and radioman for Grumman TBF Avenger torpedo bombers. In the Pacific, the Navy ***** igned Newman to squadrons that trained air crews and pilots. After a stint as a turret gunner, the plan was for Newman and his squadron to meet up with the USS Bunker Hill, an aircraft carrier stationed near the shore of Okinawa.

They never made it that far after their pilot wasn't medically cleared to fly. That turned out to be a likely life-saver after the ***** anese unleashed kamikaze attacks on the USS Bunker Hill on May 11, 1945. Nearly 400 men on the carrier died, with 264 more wounded.

It wasn't the only time that Newman, then only 20 years old, skirted death during the war. He did it again a few months later. When the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, Newman was on an aircraft carrier several hundred miles from ***** an. Three days later, another bomb destroyed Nagasaki.

Approximately 214,000 ***** anese citizens, including roughly 38,000 children, died in the attacks, per the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). Those numbers don't include those who were maimed. While President Harry S. Truman's decision remains a source of debate, but Newman didn't question it.

Right-wing political commentator Megyn Kelly has an issue with Caitlin Clark. On Sunday, August 2, Clark was asked to weigh in on the growing debate over transgender athletes competing in women's sports after her teammate Sophie Cunningham said she opposed it. While speaking with the media, Clark gave a brief, PG response that appeared to sidestep the debate altogether. Kelly wasn't buying it, blasting Clark's response as "cowardly" on both her podcast and social media.
On "The Megyn Kelly Show," the former Fox News anchor unleashed on some of the women in the WNBA, many of whom have come out in support of transgender athletes and spoke about the importance of inclusivity in sports.
"These women's coaches are absolute effing cowards, and we have taken one step forward, two steps back when it comes to this issue. I am sick of people who don't know anything about this spewing their ignorance all over the internet, whether it's verbally or through their dumb T-shirts or the attacks on the Sophie Cunningham who simply spoke truth about how it's not fair to allow men to compete in women's sports," Kelly said.
Kelly went on to say that she was surprised that the topic of transgender athletes competing in women's sports was still a pressing topic, adding that she believed people had moved on from this conversation several years ago.
She then turned her attention to Clark and blasted the Indiana Fever star for her PG answer on the topic. "I'm sorry, Caitlin Clark was directly asked to speak on it, and she was cowardly! She refused to do it," said Kelly.

Bleacher Report has unleashed a new list ranking all of the NFL quarterbacks for 2026. In it, players are graded on six categories: accuracy (25 points), processing (20), arm talent, decision-making, pocket presence (15 apiece) and leadership (10).
Of course, ****** ody thought Smith would be ranked No. 1 on this list. But, he's in a pretty tough spot at No. 29. He's in the "functional performer" section.

Tom Moore, a key part of the UConn men's basketball team's success for 21 seasons over two different tenures and several job ***** les, will be calling an end to his career.
Moore boasts four national championship rings as an ***** istant coach, two under Jim Calhoun and two under Dan Hurley. He initially joined Calhoun's staff in 1994 and spent 13 seasons as an ***** istant and key recruiter, helping the Huskies to national ***** les in 1999 and 2004. In 2007, he headed down to Quinnipiac to take over the head coaching reins and lasted 10 seasons.
Moore was fired from Quinnipiac in 2017 and joined Hurley's staff at Rhode Island. The following season, he followed Hurley to UConn and was an ***** istant on the 2023 and 2024 repeat national ***** le teams.
Prior to last season, Moore took over the program's newly-created general manager position, in which he handled name, image and likeness (NIL) and transfer portal issues, among many other duties.
Moore, 61, was simply tired of the day-to-day grind that the new world of college athletics has unleashed. For example, barely an hour after the Huskies had lost to Michigan in the national championship game, the transfer portal opened. Throughout the entire flight back to Connecticut, Hurley asked Moore about the amount of money the program might have for this player, for that player. The U.S. military unleashed airstrikes against Iran on Saturday evening in retaliation for Tehran hitting two military bases in Jordan a day prior, during which two U.S. service members were killed, the U.S. Central Command announced (Centcom).
The new wave of strikes began at 6 p.m. EDT in what U.S. officials said was an effort to further degrade Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and "punish" the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces who launched missiles and drones against U.S. soldiers in Jordan on Friday.
Apart from the U.S. service members who were killed in action in Jordan, one service member is currently missing, according to Centcom. The U.S. military death toll has now risen to 16 since the start of the conflict.
Four U.S. service members were medically evacuated to Jordanian hospitals and they have been discharged since. Other personnel who sustained "minor injuries" have returned to duty, according to the U.S. military.
"Godspeed, heroes. Their sacrifice only stiffens our resolve," Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Saturday.

July 8 (Reuters) - Iran's Revolutionary Guards said they targeted U.S. military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait on Wednesday after the U.S. launched a wave of military strikes on Iran in response to attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.
