As a quarterback battle brews in Tuscaloosa, Nick Saban sees a parallel with one of the most uncertain preseasons of his coaching career with Alabama football.
During an appearance on SEC Network on Wednesday, July 22, the legendary coach reflected on the Crimson Tide's turbulent 2015 quarterback competition, when three different QBs saw action through Alabama's first three games before Jake ***** er ultimately led the program to a national championship.
Those days are gone, and the Kalen DeBoer era has arrived. The current offense isn't loaded with weapons like Derrick Henry or Calvin Ridley, but instead returns the least amount of production in the SEC.
"We just needed a quarterback to manage the game and not mess it up, and (to) be able to throw the ball down the field and complement the great running game we have," Saban said of the 2015 situation.
While the circumstances aren't identical, Saban believes Alabama once again has multiple quarterbacks capable of winning games on its roster.

The MLB Draft is almost here as Alabama baseball fans anticipate a third consecutive first-rounder being named for the Crimson Tide.
Following up Ben Hess, who broke an 18-year-long drought in 2024, and Riley Quick, Alabama shortstop Justin Lebron is expected to join the ranks of Crimson Tide first-round picks.
Lebron finished his time in Tuscaloosa with a .309 batting average, tallying 46 home runs with 66 career steals in 68 attempts. In mock drafts, he is widely projected to go somewhere around the 14th through 16th pick.
Here's how to watch the 2026 MLB Draft:

The Alabama Crimson Tide will enter the 2026 season with a plethora of new faces on both sides of the football.
Alabama lost a handful of talent from last years' team to both the transfer portal and NFL draft this offseason. The Tide have a promising mix of young and veteran talent, despite some key departures, and Alabama could quickly emerge as one of the top teams in all of college football this upcoming season nonetheless.
A multitude of Crimson Tide playmakers could emerge as X-factors in 2026 as well. A prediction regarding Alabama's most productive player at each position this upcoming season can be found below.
Russell is an extremely talented quarterback who could quickly become a star this season. The sophomore was ranked as the No. 2 overall player from the class of 2025, per the 247Sports Composite, and Russell may shine as the Crimson Tide's signal caller this season if he ultimately wins the job over fellow quarterback Austin Mack.
Russell flashed elite potential in 2025 despite appearing in just two games, and the rising star will once again look to shine in Tuscaloosa this season.

Happy Thursday everyone. Yesterday we were honoring the day by Gumping over Keelon Russell's Heisman candidacy, but Charlie Potter thinks that Austin Mack is still very much alive in the race and might even have an edge.
Very interesting, but I still fully expect Russell to win the job.
Nick Kelly continues to hear great things about Devan Thompkins.
The Southern Cal transfer didn't have eye-popping stats out west, but all early indications out of Tuscaloosa are that he's got a real chance to became an instant game wrecker in his first season with the Crimson Tide.
"Once we got to know him and you started doing your research from his time at USC, you know this guy's a captain, he's a leader," defensive coordinator Kane Wommack said in the spring. "He carries himself with a professional demeanor day-in and day-out.

Few teams in college football will face a more difficult path in 2026 than the Florida State Seminoles. According to a new ranking from On3's Andy Staples, the Seminoles have the toughest schedule in the ACC entering the 2026 season, finishing ahead of the Clemson Tigers, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, North Carolina Tar Heels, and Boston College Eagles.
While Florida State is one of five conference teams slated to play only eight ACC games as part of the league's transition to a new scheduling model, the Seminoles' schedule features a daunting combination of conference contenders, rivalry games and marquee non-conference matchups. From a Labor Day showdown against SMU to a road trip to Alabama and late-season games against Clemson and Florida, Mike Norvell's team will have little margin for error as it looks to rebound in 2026.
The Seminoles begin with a Week 0 tune-up against New Mexico State, but the degree of difficulty increases immediately. Florida State then hosts SMU, welcoming a program that has gone 14-2 in ACC regular-season play since joining the conference.
After an early bye week, Florida State travels to Tuscaloosa on Sept. 19 for a rematch with Alabama. The Seminoles stunned the Crimson Tide last season, setting up one of the most anticipated non-conference games of the 2026 campaign.
The heart of the ACC schedule may be even more challenging. On3 identified Florida State's stretch of Virginia, Louisville and Miami as the toughest three-week run handed out by the conference schedule-makers this season. The Seminoles host Virginia on Oct. 3 before traveling to Louisville the following Friday and then heading to Miami just eight days later.

The Tigers won out on yet another highly-sought after 2027 recruit.
Jayden Aparicio-Bailey from Prattville, AL about 90 mins from Tuscaloosa and Auburn (but originally from California) narrowed his finalists to Georgia and Clemson before ultimately picking the Tigers. He joins S Jarrell Chandler, S Harrison Luke, CB Bryant Robinson, and CB PJ Chancellor as the fifth defensive back in the class. He is the highest-rated defensive back in the class. This win pushes Clemson’s class back into the top 10 for 2027.
Aparicio-Bailey credited Coach Mike Reed, CB Ashton Hampton, and NB Donovan Starr for playing a big role in him choosing the Tigers.
He played primarily at safety in high school but said during his live commitment video that he will play boundary cornerback in college. At 6-2, 195lbs, his measurables already match Ashton Hampton. That would give the Tigers a long, physical corner that can play on an island against tall outside receivers and help against the run.
His highlights stand out to me for their diversity in showcasing his speed, tackling, and ball skills. Harrison Luke stands out for his ability to attack the run. Jarrell Chandler stands out for his tackling. Bryant Robinson stands out for his coverage. Jayden does it all. He is an extremely impressive high school recruiting win. While Clemson has begun growing more willing to lean on the portal when needed, high school recruiting remains the backbone for college football and especially Coach Swinney’s Tigers. As such, this win is critical.

Alabama basketball guard Latrell Wrightsell Jr. has reportedly signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the NBA's Charlotte Hornets, per The Charlotte Observer's Rod Boone.
As a result, Wrightsell, who went undrafted in the 2026 NBA draft, will now join Charlotte where he will compete for a roster spot with the Hornets this offseason. This will also likely include Wrightsell playing for Charlotte during the NBA's upcoming Summer League.
Wrightsell spent the last three seasons at Alabama after transferring from Cal State Fullerton, starting in 36-of-66 games played. Over those three seasons combined, Wrightsell averaged 11 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.7 ******* ists a game, all while shooting 40% from three-point range.
The veteran guard was also a combined 85.7% free throw shooter during his time in Tuscaloosa.
Wrightsell was one-of-three Alabama players to go undrafted in the 2026 NBA draft, joined by Houston Mallette and Noah Williamson. Labaron Philon Jr. was Alabama's lone player selected, coming off the board at pick No. 22 overall to the Philadelphia 76ers.

It's no secret that Philadelphia Eagles fans have grown accustomed to seeing Jalen Hurts and DeVonta Smith make magic together on the football field. Recently, social media clips offered something different. The star wide receiver married his fiancée, Mya Danielle. Friends, teammates, and family were invited to share in a remarkable and beautiful ceremony.
Hurts and Smith were spotted dancing together during Smith's wedding celebration, giving fans a rare glimpse into a friendship that extends well beyond game days, training camps, and championship pursuits. The video was shared by Hurts' agent, Nicole Lynn, and quickly caught the attention of Eagles fans who aren't used to seeing the typically reserved quarterback in such a carefree setting.
The moment came during Smith's June wedding to his longtime partner, Mya Danielle, at the Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort. The elegant black-tie ceremony is of the more heartwarming sights we have seen during the 2026 NFL offseason.
Seeing Hurts and Smith enjoying the celebration together is a reminder of the connection the two stars have shared for a decade. The bond has followed them from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to Philadelphia, where they have since appeared in two Super Bowls together and helped bring another Lombardi Trophy to the Eagles organization.
While Hurts is known for keeping his private life out of the spotlight, moments like these remind fans that some of the strongest connections inside an NFL locker room are built away from the practice field. Chemistry isn't created only during film sessions and workouts. Sometimes it grows through years of shared experiences, major life events, and friendships that survive long after the final whistle blows.

The Alabama Crimson Tide swept the St. John’s Red Storm 2-0 during the Tuscaloosa Super Regional at Sewell-Thomas Stadium this weekend.
Alabama was red hot at the plate across both matchups against the Johnnies. The Tide outscored St. John’s 15-2 throughout both games, and Alabama has officially punched their ticket to the 2026 College World Series in Omaha as a result.
Here are three takeaways from Alabama baseball’s sweep over St. John’s in the Tuscaloosa Super Regional.
Fay has been one of the most reliable pitchers in Alabama’s rotation throughout the entire 2026 campaign. The Crimson Tide star surrendered just two hits over 7.1 innings of work, as Fay was almost flawless against the Johnnies on Saturday afternoon.
The flamethrower will play a critical role on the mound during the College World Series, as Fay will need to keep things rolling into Omaha next weekend.

One week after their stunning regional victory as a four-seed, St. John’s is hoping lightning can strike twice versus the seventh-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide in the Tuscaloosa Super Regional, where the winner of the best-of-three series will punch their ticket to the College World Series. First pitch from Sewell-Thomas Stadium is scheduled for 9 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on ESPN2. The full double-elimination bracket can be accessed here.
St. John’s and Alabama are both looking to snap decades-long College World Series droughts this weekend. The Red Storm haven’t returned to Omaha since 1980, while the Crimson Tide made their last trip in 1999.
This will be the Red Storm’s second-ever Super Regional appearance since the current seeding format was established in 1999. They’re hoping for a better result after they fell to eventual national champion Arizona in two games back in 2012.
St. John’s enters the weekend with a 36-24 record and winners of their last eight games. Following a 1-10 start to the 2026 season, the Red Storm have won 35 of their last 49 games.
The Johnnies swept through the Tallahassee Regional in three games last weekend, knocking off national 10-seed Florida State twice and routing Northern Illinois, while coming back from multi-run deficits in each game.

Texas A&M's 2026 schedule, on paper at least, is much tougher than last season's slate, primarily due to a formidable stretch of road games against LSU, Missouri, South Carolina, and Alabama, plus a trip to Oklahoma in Norman before hosting the Texas Longhorns at the end of the regular season.
However, similar to last season, no one knows how most of the SEC will pan out, especially Alabama, as the Crimson Tide enters the fall practice period with a quarterback battle between Austin Mack and freshman Keelon Russell, who may end up splitting snaps to start the year before a final decision is made.
Defensively, Alabama should be better, bringing back an experienced secondary littered with blue-chip recruiting talent, while outside linebacker Yhonzae Pierre is widely regarded as the program's top pass rusher after recording eight sacks and 14 tackles for loss last season.
Set to face Alabama in Tuscaloosa on Saturday, October 24th, both teams could enter the game undefeated, and Texas A&M starting quarterback Marcel Reed will face the Tide for the first time in his career, needing to perform at his very best for the Aggies to have a shot at pulling off the upset.
Last season, Reed threw for a career-high 3,169 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, but struggled during the final two games against Texas and Miami in the first round of the College Football Playoff. Still, entering his second full starting season, the expectations couldn't be higher for the Tennessee native.

The NCAA baseball tournament regionals are over … and some surprising teams are moving on. The nation’s No. 1 team, UCLA, is shockingly out of the event and two four-seeds — Little Rock and St. John’s — are moving on.
