It's another week for Alabama high school football in the Montgomery area. Week 2 of the 2026 AHSAA football season in the area is shifting towards regional play, adding an early urgency to the season.
With regional play comes great matchups across the River Region, and more rivarly games that carry significant weight when it comes to the postseason.

High school football is back in the Gadsden area starting this week and the action is starting up Thursday, Aug. 27.
The AHSAA season officially got started last week, but a few Gadsden-area teams waited until this week to get going. That group is led by Hokes Bluff, which starts with Southside on Thursday, and Westbrook Christian, which travels down to Ashville. Cherokee County and Sand Rock both get started with traditional rivalries with Piedmont and Spring Garden, respectively.
The season runs through October before the playoffs start in November. The AHSAA Football championships are December 1-5 in Mobile, one of many changes this season. The biggest shakeup was the public-private split and ensuing fallout that created two classes and got rid of 7A.

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN)—The Houston Academy Raiders finished off their 2025 season with an overall record of 6-5 and yet another appearance in the postseason.
Naturally, after experiencing so much success over the past few years, the team and its fans would expect nothing less as they enter the new year.
But instead, the Raiders will be enduring one of their most challenging seasons to date.
"We're up against the toughest thing H.A.'s seen probably in the history of football," head coach Eddie Brundidge said.
For years, Houston Academy has competed in the AHSAA's 3A Region 2 classification, facing pretty evenly matched opponents week in and week out.

Northridge baseball forfeits game in AHSAA semifinal for rules violation
HOOVER — Northridge baseball forfeited a win in its playoff series with Spain Park after a pitch-count rule violation.
The violation came in the bottom of the seventh inning with the bases loaded and one out. Spain Park’s count had Northridge pitcher Evan Malone at 120 pitches following a sacrifice fly to tie the game, while Northridge had him at 119 and able to start the next batter.
Malone forced the third out to send the game to extra innings.
Northridge won 5-4, with Spain Park finishing the game under protest. After the game Spain Park, filed an appeal to the AHSAA.
The ruling came before the second game, which was being played Friday night, according to Northridge principal Jessica Williams.
