Work to create the UK's first battery-electric trains for long-distance main line services is set to begin in 2028, the Department for Transport (DfT) has announced.
The 29 new Adessia Stream trains are expected to enter service in 2034 and will be built at Alstom's Litchurch Lane factory in Derby.
The government said the investment of almost £1bn would help support more than 350 jobs at Alstom and a further 6,000 jobs across the UK supply chain.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham said the new trains would deliver "faster, more reliable journeys to the north and thousands of British jobs for the next generation".

For nearly two minutes, one of the pilots of the Amazon cargo plane that careened off a Miami runway and killed five people repeatedly warned his counterpart they were going too fast as they approached for landing and after touchdown, according to flight information released Wednesday.
A summary of ******* pit voice recordings compiled by the National Transportation Safety Board said the fellow pilot never gave "a consistent verbal response" to the warnings. The plane touched down awkwardly, briefly attempted to take off and then smashed into a van carrying the five victims.
The Amazon plane came in fast on Sunday afternoon and then barreled roughly 1,300 feet (396 meters) past the end of the runway and smashed into a van carrying workers at a plane cleaning company before hitting a compact SUV as it slid across a public road before catching fire.
All five people who died were in the van. Five others were hurt, including two who remained in critical condition on Tuesday. The two pilots survived and were interviewed Wednesday by investigators.
At the point when the pilot first called out the plane was speeding, former FAA official Mike O'Donnell said the crew could have done a number of things to slow it down, including extending the spoilers, cutting the throttles and lowering the landing gear. Or the pilots could have just aborted the landing at that point and circled to try again.

Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton has reduced the asking price of his sprawling Las Vegas mansion by $350,000—nearly one month after he was hospitalized following a health incident at his new Miami home.
The 48-year-old media personality initially listed the six-bedroom, 6.5-bathroom property for $4.25 million in June, telling Realtor.com® at the time that the custom-built residence had "served" him well during his years in Nevada.
Now, Hilton has reduced the price to $3.9 million as he looks to sever his remaining real estate ties to Nevada and settle permanently in Miami with his three children and mother.
The price cut comes mere hours after his family issued a public plea on his website asking fans and onlookers to stop gathering around his Miami residence—following a distressing livestream that prompted several calls to police and requests for a welfare check.
Officers ultimately transported Hilton to a nearby hospital, while mental health professionals and the Crisis Response Unit offered support to his friends and family.

Diddy secured a significant legal victory in his defamation case against lawyer Ariel Mitchell and her client Courtney Burgess. Burgess made explosive claims about the music mogul, alleging that he had videos showing Diddy ***** ually ***** aulting minors and celebrities.
Mitchell asked the court to dismiss Diddy's lawsuit, but US District Judge John Cronan has declined to do so. The court ruled that her arguments were not strong enough to warrant ending the case. In a September 4 order, the judge stated that claims alleging Diddy ***** ually ***** aulted people and secretly recorded ***** ual partners have "precise meanings that are readily understood," reports TMZ.
Diddy filed the defamation lawsuit on January 22, 2025. The case was brought in a New York federal court and initially sought $50 million in damages. Later, the amount was increased to $100 million. The lawsuit also named NewsNation's parent company, Nexstar Media. Diddy accused them of promoting "outlandish claims" and "baseless speculation." He claimed the statements were designed to satisfy the public's desire for "wild lies."
Mitchell previously spoke to the outlet about the matter, saying, "This is just a pathetic ploy to silence victims and people who stand up for victims. Diddy has time to sue but refuses to accept service for the lawsuits already filed against him. I look forward to countersuing and ensuring the court punishes not only Diddy but also his lawyers who filed this pathetic lawsuit for this frivolous and meritless filing."
Combs is currently serving a 50-month prison sentence after facing charges of ***** trafficking, racketeering, and transportation for prostitution. A court hearing to determine the next steps in the case is scheduled for September 17.

Taylor McGregor is the Cubs reporter on Marquee Sports and also works the sidelines for ESPN. Her diligent work during unusual circumstances made her a viral star earlier this week when she expertly kept viewers up to speed during a power outage that delayed kickoff in the SMU-Florida State contest. Amid this, it was right back to work for McGregor as the Cubs continued their series in Milwaukee against the Brewers. And it didn't take long until she found herself in another unusual situation.
Calling into The Score on Wednesday, McGregor thought she had a great temporary work station in her car on the side of the street. The thought was to do a quick hit and then get back on the road and out of the way. Plus, who is going to bother someone doing sports talk on the shoulder? Isn't this America?
That plan quickly took a turn as a security guard made it very clear to McGregor and the Chicagoland listening audience that she needed to move, like, right now.
You know what? This is just a case where everyone involved is doing their job and doing it well. The hosts are making sure they get the maximum entertainment value from the guest. McGregor is not about to let any number of transportation or technological issues from getting people all the Cubs info they need. And that security guard rightly does not care if someone is on a Zoom call, they cannot do that here. Respect all around.

Number-one ranked Ohio State is traveling to Austin to take on the fourth-ranked Longhorns this weekend in what has become the most-anticipated college football game of the season so far.
According to ticketdata.com, the cheapest tickets available for the game are $463 - nearly three times higher than any other college football game this week. However, not only are the tickets hot, but the weather will be too. Game day temperatures in Austin will rise to dangerous levels, with heat index values rising to nearly 110 degrees.
Saturday's temperatures will be similar to last week's game against Texas State, during which Austin-Travis County EMS transported 13 fans from DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium to surrounding local hospitals due to heat-related illnesses.
Temperatures in Austin are expected to be in the mid-90s at noon Saturday before rising to 100-102 degrees by 3 to 4 p.m. Due to elevated humidity levels, the heat index, or "feel-like" temperature, is likely to reach as high as 108 degrees. There will be a slight breeze, as southeast winds are expected at around 10 mph.
Shown are the expected heat index values across Texas at 4 p.m. Saturday. Austin will likely be experiencing temps that feel like 108 degrees. (WeatherBell)

Sept 7 - The US National Transportation Safety Board will hold a media briefing at 4 p.m. EDT (2000 GMT) on Monday to share its latest updates about Sunday's deadly Amazon Prime Air cargo plane crash at Miami International Airport, the agency said in a post on X.
Prime Air Flight 7598 overran the airport's diagonal runway shortly before 2 p.m. EDT and struck multiple vehicles on the ground, killing 5 people and injuring 5 more, including 3 who are in critical condition, officials said during a news conference on Sunday afternoon.
At least two people were trapped in vehicles that were struck by the plane, and the pilot and co-pilot were trapped inside the plane by the crash, said Miami-Dade Fire Chief Ray Jadallah.
More than 60 rescue units and about 200 personnel responded to the incident, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said in a statement. As of late Sunday afternoon, emergency personnel were still dealing with a fuel leak from the aircraft, according to Jadallah.
The NTSB said in a post on X on Sunday afternoon that it had "launched a go team" to investigate the accident.

Federal regulators said the two crew members aboard the Amazon cargo jet that crashed at Miami International Airport on Sunday survived the accident.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) provided the update during a Sunday press conference after officials said the cargo plane overran the runway and caught fire while landing. The crash killed five people and injured five others, authorities said Sunday.
The jet collided with two vehicles carrying at least eight occupants, according to NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy.
Seven of the victims were in a van that was struck and "torn apart" on airport grounds, Homendy said. The 2012 white Ford Econoline van was owned by Ocean Service Corporation, a contract cleaning company that provides services for airlines, she said.

MOSCOW, Sept 7 (Reuters) - North Korea and Russia opened their first road bridge on Monday in a carefully choreographed display of friendship, a structure which spans the Tumen river and which both sides cast as an important milestone in their deepening strategic partnership.
The first flag-adorned trucks trundled across the 1 km (0.6 mile) long two-lane bridge as Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and North Korea's Premier Pak Thae Song tuned in by video link to address workers and government officials from both countries.
Construction of the new bridge, which had been under discussion for years, began in April last year after the project was agreed during a visit by President Vladimir Putin to North Korea in 2024. There are already direct air and rail links between Moscow and Pyongyang, but until Monday there had not been a proper road link. Instead, since 1959 and by special arrangement, planks had been placed on the nearby rail bridge - for decades the sole border crossing point - in order to move vehicles across the border between the two countries.
"I am convinced that the expansion of cross-border transport infrastructure will provide a powerful impetus for the further development of trade, economic, scientific, technological and cultural cooperation," said Mishustin, who said ties between Moscow and Pyongyang were "at an unprecedented high level" and called the opening of the bridge "a genuinely historic event."

Passengers have welcomed the return of publicly owned bus services to Merseyside for the first time since the 1980s.
The first services launched in St Helens on Sunday 6 September and will expand to the Wirral later this year. Full roll-out across the city region is expected by 2027.
Liverpool City Region secured £86.3m in government funding to help roll out the scheme. The Department for Transport said it would give local leaders greater control over routes, branding and fares, while helping improve services for passengers.
A new service to Liverpool John Lennon Airport has launched, as well as an early morning express journey to Southport.

Imagine a city free from rush-hour traffic -- not a city that literally doesn't have cars (like, say, Venice), but one that has aerial forms of transportation, like flying cars.
That picture in your head is something that could become real in the next decade. The term for it is "urban air mobility." It won't look like The Jetsons or Back to the Future II -- that is, present-day cars that can hover and propel. Rather, urban air mobility will give us electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, basically a combo of drone and helicopter. They will be quieter than helicopters, with a quick velocity that can reduce an hour of traffic to a 10-minute aerial hop.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
The total addressable market of urban air mobility could become a trillion-dollar market, which opens an opportunity to invest in its start-ups. One of those start-ups is Archer Aviation (NYSE: ACHR) -- and it very much has the potential to set investors up for life.
Archer is one of the frontrunners in the eVTOL market. It is currently working on certifying its flagship aircraft, Midnight, which could potentially taxi passengers within urban hubs and to and from airports.

Nuclear energy is experiencing a resurgence, according to many leading experts. "After decades of underinvestment, a convergence of generational technological breakthroughs, intensifying geopolitical competition, and the need for clean, dense, reliable power are positioning nuclear energy for a renaissance," **** ysts from Goldman Sachs conclude.
"But the next nuclear age will look different from the last," the bank warns. "Innovations in fission like small modular reactors (SMRs) are shaping what the revival of traditional nuclear fission could look like."

Analysts from Morgan Stanley are in agreement. "Nuclear power generation is experiencing a revival driven by ambitious climate goals and technology demands," the firm observes. Like Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley sees SMRs as one of the most promising solutions for scaling nuclear energy.
"Innovations in nuclear energy may also contribute to the investment growth picture, and a new U.S. law aimed at encouraging new nuclear technologies while cutting down red tape could help spur activity," Morgan Stanley says. "Small modular reactors (SMRs), for instance, are a fraction of the size of conventional reactors and can be factory **** embled and transported, offering scalability and flexibility."

Confession: I've been wrong about Archer Aviation (NYSE: ACHR). Not totally wrong, but wrong enough to make me rethink the stock. In truth, I've been ****** yzing the stock too narrow-mindedly, with too much focus on its air taxi business and not enough on the other developments taking shape around it.
Two of those developments are in defense and autonomous technology. And I think they will make Archer one of the most formidable eVTOL businesses on the market.
Continue »
By now, you probably know what Archer is, or what it's trying to build. It's a frontrunner in the nascent electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) industry. Long term, it wants to operate an air taxi service, a kind of Uber (NYSE: UBER) in the skies, a transportation network to taxi people through the air to vertiports in major cities.
The urban mobility market, which includes eVTOL services, is expected to grow into a multitrillion-dollar market over the next several decades. That has also been one of the primary reasons to invest in companies like Archer, whose $4 billion-ish market cap could grow exponentially if this industry attracts the heavy demand expected of it.

On August 25, EPAM Systems (NYSE:EPAM) announced a partnership with Wiz, the cloud and AI security platform now owned by Google Cloud, joining the Wiz Partner Alliance to help large organizations turn cloud risk data into actual engineering fixes. The timing is notable. Just weeks earlier, on August 6, EPAM reported second-quarter revenue growth of only 4.5% and pointed to a much slower pace ahead. A cybersecurity push gives the company a fresh growth story just as its core business decelerates.
The Wiz deal pairs Wiz's AI Application Protection Platform with EPAM's AI-native engineering and cloud modernization work, aiming to move clients from simply spotting cloud risks to actually remediating them across Google Cloud, AWS, Azure, and other environments. White Hat, an EPAM company, adds an offensive security layer of defensive, offensive, and incident response specialists to test whether flaws found by Wiz are actually exploitable, rather than just theoretical. EPAM says this formalizes work already underway, having delivered Wiz implementation programs across six industries: media and entertainment, transportation and logistics, life sciences and healthcare, financial services, automotive, and retail and consumer goods. That existing footprint gives the partnership a running start rather than a cold launch.
The financial backdrop supports the case that EPAM has room to invest here. Second quarter GAAP income from operations rose to 10.8% of revenue from 9.3% a year earlier, while non-GAAP operating margin climbed to 16.4% from 15%. GAAP diluted EPS reached $1.97, up 26.3% year over year, and non-GAAP diluted EPS hit $3.38, up 22%. The company also returned $409 million to shareholders through buybacks in the first half of 2026, including $85 million in the second quarter alone.
The numbers behind the Wiz announcement tell a more cautious story. EPAM's full-year revenue growth guidance now sits at 3.2% to 4.2%, with organic constant currency growth pegged at just 2.0% to 3.0%. The third quarter outlook is softer still: revenue of $1.410 billion to $1.425 billion implies year-over-year growth of roughly 1.7% at the midpoint, a sharp step down from the 4.5% posted in the second quarter.
Cash flow moved in the wrong direction too. EPAM used $38.8 million in operating activities during the first half of 2026, compared with $77.4 million generated over the same period in 2025. Total cash, equivalents and restricted cash fell 39% to $794.3 million as of June 30, from $1.301 billion at the end of 2025, a decline driven in part by continued share repurchases. Headcount growth was modest as well, with delivery professionals up just 0.3% from the prior quarter, suggesting a company being deliberate rather than aggressive about scaling capacity even as it adds new service lines like Wiz implementation.

Nuclear energy is experiencing a resurgence, according to many leading experts. "After decades of underinvestment, a convergence of generational technological breakthroughs, intensifying geopolitical competition, and the need for clean, dense, reliable power are positioning nuclear energy for a renaissance," ******* ysts from Goldman Sachs conclude.
"But the next nuclear age will look different from the last," the bank warns. "Innovations in fission like small modular reactors (SMRs) are shaping what the revival of traditional nuclear fission could look like."
Continue »
"Small modular reactors (SMRs), for instance, are a fraction of the size of conventional reactors and can be factory ******* embled and transported, offering scalability and flexibility."

A dispute over allegations of defective work that resulted in trailers catching fire now is threatening to drag in the manufacturers of some of those components that may be at the root of the incidents.
The case of Indiana-based Summitt Leasing and Summitt Trucking vs. Fruehauf was first filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western district of Kentucky at the end of last year, with an amended complaint filed soon after. Summitt is a carrier as well as a supplier of leased trailers.
Long cast of characters
Last week, Fruehauf, a manufacturer of trailers, moved to bring in as defendants SAF-Holland Inc., Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC and Hoosier Trailer Acquisition Corp. Two of those companies, SAF-Holland and Bendix, manufactured components in the trailers that van leasing company Summitt says failed in several different ways, which may have led to the fires.
Hoosier is a trailer dealer that supplied the Fruehauf-manufactured trailer to Pace Transportation Services, which then moved the trailers to Summitt. Pace already was a defendant in the original case along with Fruehauf.

Williams has closed its approximately $5.5 billion acquisition of Momentum Midstream, giving the U.S. pipeline operator a substantially larger position in the Haynesville natural gas basin as Gulf Coast LNG and power demand continue to rise.
The transaction consists of approximately $3.5 billion in cash and debt consideration and around $2 billion in Williams equity.
Momentum brings more than 4,000 miles of pipeline, over 1 million dedicated acres and 6 billion cubic feet per day of gas gathering capacity. The ******* ets also include processing and treating facilities and three pipelines backed by take-or-pay contracts with a combined 4.05 Bcf/d of transportation capacity.
Williams initially announced the acquisition on August 3, valuing the transaction at up to $5.5 billion. At the time, the company said the deal carried an implied valuation of approximately 8.5 times projected 2027 EBITDA and was expected to increase both earnings per share and available funds from operations per share. Williams also raised the midpoint of its 2026 adjusted EBITDA guidance by $200 million to $8.4 billion to reflect the transaction.
The acquisition gives Williams a larger role in moving Haynesville gas toward some of the fastest-growing sources of U.S. gas demand, particularly LNG export facilities and industrial consumers along the Gulf Coast.

Cheapest freight isn't always best, especially when a late shipment can cost millions. ShipStation Global CEO Tom Madine breaks down why SMB shippers need parcel, LTL and truckload in one workflow, and why better freight decisions now matter more than just lower rates. From the merger that created ShipStation Global to adding more modes into the platform, this conversation gets into where shipping tech is heading, how data shapes carrier selection, and what smaller shippers actually need from logistics partners. #FreightTech #LTL #SupplyChain
ShipStation Global is formally launching its less-than-truckload product, marking the first tangible freight expansion since the merger of software provider Auctane, formerly the parent of the Stamps.com andShipStation, and WWEX Group, which previously housed freight brokerages like Worldwide Express. The company's CEO said the rollout represents the opening move in a broader strategy to let small and midsize shippers purchase and manage all transportation modes through a single platform.
"Today's the first day we've really launched the LTL product," said Tom Madine, CEO of ShipStation Global, noting the company plans to add truckload, final mile, and eventually ocean and forwarding capabilities after establishing its inland position.
The strategic rationale centers on eliminating the workflow gap that forced ShipStation users to leave the platform whenever they needed to move freight beyond parcel. Customer surveys repeatedly flagged the absence of additional modes as the top improvement request, he said. With LTL now integrated, shippers can manage inbound inventory movements alongside outbound parcel without switching systems.
"Cheapest is not always best…But at the same time, you don't want to overpay," Madine said, illustrating the point with a customer whose engine shipments carry multi-million-dollar consequences if delayed.

AI gate automation cut dwell times to under 30 seconds while EAIGLE posted 350% year-over-year growth. CEO Amir Hoss explains how the company uses existing security cameras and computer vision to automate gate, yard and dock workflows. On site at a live facility, Hoss breaks down how EAIGLE went from a customer problem to a fully automated, paperless gate and yard operation. He also explains why the next growth phase matters for carriers, shippers and warehouse operators trying to move trucks through the yard faster.#GateAutomation #YardManagement #SupplyChainAI
EAIGLE, an automation company focused on gate-to-dock logistics, has closed a growth funding round on the heels of 350% year-over-year revenue growth, CEO and founder Amir Hoss said in an interview with FreightWaves. The company's computer vision platform reduces gate dwell times that previously ranged from 7.5 to 18 minutes down to under 30 seconds — and sometimes under one minute — by tapping into camera infrastructure that facilities already own.
The technology matters to carriers, brokers, and shippers because gate congestion and yard opacity have long been among the most stubborn inefficiencies in distribution operations. EAIGLE's system automates the full check-in and check-out process, validates bills of lading, purchase orders, appointments, and USDOT numbers in real time, and feeds clean data directly into yard management, warehouse management, and transportation management systems via APIs.
At one active facility where Hoss spoke — a site processing roughly 1,100 trucks per day across two gates and four lanes — EAIGLE replaced 18 full-time staff across three shifts with a fully unmanned, paperless operation. "We didn't validate here, we just log," Hoss recalled a security guard telling him five or six years ago, a dynamic he said rendered downstream YMS data unreliable. "It becomes garbage in and garbage out," he said.
"The bar is really high because you own that responsibility of initiating the high accuracy and complete data capture and validation for the rest of the systems in the supply chain ecosystem of each one of the operational customers."

Baron Capital, an investment management company, released its second-quarter 2026 investor letter for its "Baron Global Opportunity Fund". The letter can be downloaded here. The fund achieved a strong quarter, gaining 26.7% (Institutional Shares), exceeding a 14.9% gain for the MSCI ACWI Index (the Index), and a 19.8% gain for the MSCI ACWI Growth Index. YTD, the Fund is up 20.6% compared to gains of 11.3% and 10.6% for the benchmarks, respectively. In mid-2026, market patterns show similarities to the previous year, following three years of over 25% gains driven by a healthy economy and AI investments. Elevated geopolitical risks persisted, with a pullback likely. A tariff-related market dip was followed by a recovery, reflecting a growing market indifference to geopolitical uncertainties. Similarly, airstrikes against Iran and subsequent tension led to an initial market sell-off, yet a lull in hostilities led to a strong market rally. The Fund noted significant outperformance, credited to stock selection and sector allocation, with 1,173bps of overall outperformance relative to the Index. It excelled in developed markets while underperforming in emerging markets, particularly due to a spectacular rise in Korea. The Fund remains optimistic about its investments and seeks attractive opportunities. Also, check the fund's top five holdings to see its best picks in 2026.
In its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, Baron Global Opportunity Fund highlighted DPC Holdings PLC (NYSE:DPC) as a new addition. DPC Holdings PLC (NYSE:DPC) manufacturers engine products, including complex precision cast components and nickel- and cobalt-based superalloys for aerospace, industrial gas turbine and transportation industries. On September 1, 2026, DPC Holdings PLC (NYSE:DPC) closed at $41.48 per share. Over the past month, DPC Holdings PLC (NYSE:DPC) declined 20.69%. DPC Holdings PLC (NYSE:DPC) has a market capitalization of $6.02 billion.
Baron Global Opportunity Fund stated the following regarding DPC Holdings PLC (NYSE:DPC) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
We also initiated a new position in DPC Holdings PLC (NYSE:DPC), a leading manufacturer of precision-cast superalloy components – the turbine blades, vanes, and structural castings that must perform under very harsh operating conditions including very high temperatures (1000c) and high pressure. These parts go into both commercial aircraft engines and industrial gas turbines (IGT) that generate electricity. The company occupies a hard-to-replicate market positioning as a critical supplier of the inner parts of an engine that only a handful of qualified manufacturers in the world are capable of producing.
Since the company began its turnaround in 2020 after over a decade under poor ownership, with the leadership of CEO Mike Quinn, who spent over a decade at Precision Castparts, and Co Chairperson of the Board Dirkson Charles, who built and currently is CEO of aerospace and defense proprietary parts provider

Interested in Union Pacific Corporation? Here are five stocks we like better.
STB review is advancing: Union Pacific said the Surface Transportation Board's 12-month review of its proposed Norfolk Southern merger began after the application was accepted on May 28, 2026. The company expects the deal could close in the third or fourth quarter of 2027.
Projected merger benefits remain substantial: Union Pacific estimates the combination could remove 2.1 million truckloads from highways annually, generate $3.5 billion in shipper savings, and deliver approximately $1.8 billion in annual revenue synergies plus $1 billion in cost synergies.
Competitive concerns are being addressed: The company has proposed pricing and service protections for shippers and reached agreements with Canadian National intended to ease concentration concerns and expand routing options. Executives said they remain confident the merger will meet the STB's public-interest requirements.
