The San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams will open their seasons next Thursday in an historic matchup from Melbourne, Australia.
While the 49ers have already begun their trek down under, the Rams will not be arriving until a day before the game, which kicks off on Friday, Sept. 11, at 11:35 a.m local time.
As both teams prepare for Week 1, there are several lingering injury storylines to track. A number of key players are working their way towards being ready to play, but a few have yet to get a green light.
After tearing his Achilles in January, the tight end is trending in a positive direction as far as playing next week. Kittle practiced this week and, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, there is an "optimistic sense" of the 32-year-old being available against the Rams. Like Bosa, he was on the plane to Australia on Wednesday.
The defensive end practiced for the first time in training camp on Wednesday, nearly a year after tearing his right ACL. He told reporters that he "felt great" and said the progress he is making is "very encouraging." As far as playing Week 1, he did not say anything definitive, but sounded like he was expecting to be out there next Thursday. Teams doctors will have the final say, of course.

Panthers running back Jonathon Brooks remained out of practice on Wednesday, but head coach Dave Canales is unconcerned that Brooks' injury will keep him out of the season opener.
"I'm very optimistic he'll be available for Week 1," Canales said Wednesday, via ESPN's Mike Kaye.
Brooks is dealing with "soreness" Canales revealed Tuesday, but Canales would not specify the location of Brooks' discomfort.
Brooks has undergone back-to-back ACL surgeries on his right knee, but he participated in all of training camp and two preseason games this summer. He played 17 snaps in the preseason.
He tore his right ACL against the Eagles in December 2024, a season after tearing it while playing for the University of Texas. Brooks missed all of the 2025 season.

DENVER – Former Colorado football player Shilo Sanders testified at his bankruptcy trial here Tuesday, Sept. 1, that a security guard at his school "attacked and ***** aulted" him in 2015 — not the other way around as a Texas state court found in 2022 when it issued an $11.89 million judgment against Sanders.
Sanders, son of Colorado coach Deion Sanders, testified the security guard, John Darjean, also caused him to fear his life, choked him, caused him to "black out" and starting tearing the skin off his arm when he grabbed it in an attempt to confiscate his phone at school.
Sanders testified he was in "excruciating pain" because of it and was "choke-slammed" by Darjean into a corner, causing him to "hit my head as hard as possibly could happen."
"I literally have proof of both of his hands tearing my skin off," Sanders testified.

Filip Hrgovic ripped up the script and shattered Moses Itauma's world-title dream as the Briton appeared to punch himself out in an extraordinary heavyweight contest in London.
Itauma, 21, controlled most of the fight and scored a second-round knockdown but faded as his relentless output caught up with him.
Hrgovic weathered the storm and piled on the pressure in the ninth. With Itauma barely able to stand, his legs unsteady and body swaying before slumping in the corner, his team threw in the towel.
Itauma - who needed medical attention before leaving the arena on a stretcher - had been a heavy favourite after tearing through his first 14 opponents and was spoken about as heavyweight boxing's next superstar.

Just when you thought it was safe to draft a Giants RB, the team signed Najee Harris. Could he be the spoiler in a suddenly crowded backfield?
If you're a Cam Skattebo true believer, or if you plan to add Tyrone Tracy as an insurance policy, there's still a chance that this could all work in your favor. Harris is still returning to form after tearing his Achilles last year. He has only 19 touches since the end of the 2024 season. He has not yet earned a weekly role, and there's a chance he could be a distant third wheel.
More realistically, however, Harris will help stabilize a relatively injury-prone RB corps. Skattebo missed nine games last year and is known for inviting contact. I'd put his over/under on 2026 games played at 13.5. The expectation this summer has been that Tracy would be in line for at least a few spot starts. Although he filled in admirably for Skattebo last year, he regressed a little bit statistically on a per-touch basis, including dips in yards per carry and broken-tackle rate.
The addition of Harris takes some pressure off the Giants to overwork Skattebo, and it also generates competition with Tracy for the 1B role. It's essentially a lose-lose if you've been targeting either of those guys. The only winner is Harris, who has plenty of room to pop based on his current overall-237 / RB66 ADP. We'll know in the next one to two weeks whether he'll be a fantasy spoiler candidate.

There's something in the air when August comes around. Is it hot humid weather? Maybe it's the sounds of the insects, or birds, or the angle of the sun? But it's something. The memories come flooding back. Two-a-days, sweating, those god-awful morning conditioning runs. I thought I had gone out for track! 8-220's, 4-440's, 2-880's and a mile run under time or you repeat them. No, I'm not exaggerating. Then lunch with the team, a break, then afternoon practice. Sound like a Division I program? No, it was a small Single A high school, but the memories are deeply embedded in my soul. Every year it is the same when August begins.
There's something in the air; I can feel it! My first foray to old mountaineer field was in 1960 at old Mountaineer field and I still get that excitement in my chest just waiting; anticipating. Those memories: Being a student when we kicked that field goal to beat Pitt and rushed the field and yes, tearing down the goal post. Up to Sunnyside to celebrate! Was that the first fire-in-the-street?
It's been 221 days since the last college football game and-it-starts today, finally. I must wait 8 days for my favorite team to start but any football is better than none. As always, I have high hopes for my beloved Mountaineers! I have confidence in the coaching staff and their decisions to bring in this bunch of guys. Year 2 under Rich will mean improvement and they just might take a huge leap forward. Don't count them out but just remember it's year 2.
I'm looking forward to a MUCH-improved running game since the addition of Coach Trickett and a loaded running-back room, more speed on defense and a healthy QB room. Running the ball makes everything else easier and we need big plays out of the running game!

Draymond Green believes Klay Thompson tearing his Achilles during the 2019 NBA Finals stopped him from leaving the Warriors.
Thompson suffered a brutal Achilles tear in Game 6 of the NBA Finals against the Toronto Raptors, which played a big part in the Warriors losing their chance at a threepeat.
Given that Thompson was entering free agency that summer, there was concern that he might not stay with the Warriors. However, Green is now claiming that the injury ensured he'd stay with the team.

After the first matchday of Serie A, the talking points we've seen are the usual ones: refereeing decisions, the transfer market still being open, the post-match reactions where some vent by criticizing and others take little digs as a strategy.
The routine we waited for all summer, however, mustn't put us on autopilot, because something different happened: young Italians actually played. It seems unbelievable, but it's true: Mattia Liberali, Simone Lontani, Alessandro Romano (Swiss with dual citizenship), Emanuele Lulli, Alphadjo Cisse and Alessio Cacciamani took the field.
Some did so as starters, others came off the bench: for not all of them was it their absolute Serie A debut, but the wider public really discovered them just a few days ago. The comparison with the other top European leagues is still a long way off (to put it kindly), but at least we're trying: "Better something than nothing," as Gianni Brera would have said.
After an excellent pre-season with Milan and Ruben Amorim's imprimatur in a press conference, Alphadjo Cisse (without the accent, as he himself wanted to point out) made his debut at San Siro and scored the first Serie A goal of his career. He handled the ball well in traffic, pressed constantly and, above all, scored at the decisive moment.
During the summer he trained on his own in Montesilvano (Abruzzo) to get back into shape after tearing his adductor tendon, an injury that had cut short an excellent season with Aquilani's Catanzaro. Throughout July, Sassuolo and Torino wanted him on loan, but Amorim chose to keep him and throw him in. He is already repaying that faith.

Manchester United have completed the signing of midfielder Carlos Baleba from Brighton for a fee up to $95 million, to complete the Red Devils' expensive midfielder makeover during the transfer window.
The 22-year-old Cameroon international is the final piece of the puzzle for Michael Carrick's side after also adding Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos ($111 million combined) this summer. Put the new-boy trio alongside Bruno Fernandes and Man United's midfield has gone from definite weakness to potential strength, at least one paper.
Fernandes is fresh off breaking the Premier League's single-season ***** ist record with 21 last campaign as Man United finished 3rd after two terribly disappointing seasons down in 8th and 15th. The rest of the midfield was made up of Casemiro (33 PL starts), Kobbie Mainoo (16 starts) and a rotating carousel of Mason Mount (12) and Manuel Ugarte (8).
Casemiro ended up scoring nine goals last season (mostly from set pieces), but him and Ugarte were tasked with providing the defensive cover that gave Fernandes the freedom to win games in the final third. It worked well enough to get back in the UEFA Champions League, but Casemiro's age (34, now at Inter Miami) and Ugarte's lack of mobility (prior to tearing his ACL at the World Cup), and both player's lack of forward passing, meant they were a band-aid solution that needed ripping off sooner rather than later.
That's because this season, Man United have to win more games in which they dominate possession. They proved they can be a devastating attacking team with Fernandes feeding Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko and Amad Diallo, but they struggled terribly against opponents that defended deeper and flat out refused to give them ***** e in behind, instead setting up their own counter-attacks and — you guessed it — taking advantage of Man United's much slower defensive midfielders and defenders.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson fired back at his detractors, calling the booing he heard from some Cleveland fans during Saturday's home preseason loss against Buffalo "disrespectful" and "personal."
Watson, who has a complicated relationship with Cleveland fans because of injuries, off-field issues — including an NFL suspension in 2022 — and a massive, $230 million contract, was booed repeatedly during the second half of a 31-7 loss to the Bills.
Watson was just 5 of 12 passing for 36 yards and threw an interception. He came off the bench because the Browns started Shedeur Sanders, who is competing with Watson for the starting job. Coach Todd Monken has yet to decide which QB will start the season opener in Jacksonville on Sept. 13.
Watson didn't appreciate the reaction from the sparse crowd at Huntington Bank Field. It was his first home game since tearing his Achilles tendon on Oct. 20, 2024, when fans cheered him sustaining a potential career-ending injury.
"It has nothing to do about the performance," Watson said of the boos. "It's a little bit personal. I think that's a disrespectful thing. I'm going to keep whatever I feel with me and my family internally on how I feel about that. Just move on."

Michael Olise scored a goal and created another as Bayern Munich won 2-1 at old foes Borussia Dortmund in the season-opening German Supercup on Saturday.
After a starring role with France at the World Cup, Olise was Bayern's most dangerous attacker, regularly tearing down the right flank.

If Yasir Al-Rumayyan, governor of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), was looking for a reason to pull its money out of the LIV Golf tour, he reportedly found it in Sergio Garcia's outburst at the Masters in April.
That's the claim in Friday's edition of The Financial Times.
"In April, as LIV golfers floundered at the Masters, golf's most prestigious tournament, Spanish star Sergio Garcia damaged the Augusta National course during a fit of rage in the final round," read the Times. "People familiar with the matter say Rumayyan's embarrassment at the sequence of events helped lead to his decision to pull the plug on PIF's financing of the rival tour, as the fund focuses more on its huge domestic commitments in the kingdom."
Now, one's first thought is likely that many factors led the PIF to pull its funding from LIV, which has consistently lost money amid poor ratings and bad PR since its brief moment in the sun. However, when you look at the timing of everything, it kinda checks out.
Garcia's meltdown, which included him slamming his driver in frustration, tearing out chunks of grass, and breaking it against a cooler, took place on Sunday, April 12, the final day of the 2026 Masters.

As the debate between grass and artificial turf continues, the NFL continues to have one club in its bag.
On a Thursday conference call with reporters, NFL executive V.P. Jeff Miller reiterated the league's default position regarding the two primary playing surfaces.
"We've made public injury data on grass and synthetic for many years," Miller said. "Last three years, there's no difference between the two in any injury category or overall."
But that's only part of the story, obviously. The players strongly prefer grass, given the overall impact on the body. They feel better the next day, because the forces go into the ground on grass. On artificial turf, the forces ricochet back into the player's bodies.
Beyond that, the occurrence of an injury during a game doesn't always mean the injury happened at that time. Plenty of injuries occur when an accumulation of wear and tear results in something breaking, tearing, straining, etc.

Eric Morris, the Oklahoma State coach, revealed this week that he recently shot and killed an armadillo after it caused damage to his property.
Speaking to reporters, the former North Texas coach, hired to rebuild the struggling Stillwater football program, described his overnight encounter with the armored mammal.
"My brain's going constantly and so ... I don't sleep very well," he said Tuesday. "I've had a couple of armadillo problems tearing up my lawn. Finally, a couple of days ago I just popped up at 2:30 a.m. because I couldn't sleep, and I thought it was a great opportunity for me to go outside, and luckily I found him."

NEW YORK — The Giants' offseason-long interest in adding a running back culminated Tuesday in the signing of free agent Najee Harris.
The 6-1, 242-pound veteran is a physical runner who John Harbaugh knows well as an opponent.
Harris, 28, rushed for 1,000-plus yards in four straight seasons for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2021-24 in the same AFC North division as Harbaugh's Baltimore Ravens.
Then he signed with Harbaugh's brother, Jim, and the Los Angeles Chargers last year before tearing his Achilles three games into the regular season.
"I know there's gonna be a lot of questions about how I'll come back," Harris said Tuesday after practice. "I'm ready to answer all those."

The Cincinnati Bengals' first offensive selection during the 2026 NFL Draft, Connor Lew, was inactive vs. the Detroit Lions. After tearing his left ACL during October of 2025, the Bengals are being cautious in easing him back into full contact on a regular basis. He has been getting some first- and second-team action in camp, but the next step will be to see if he plays in one of the final two preseason games.
Colbie Young was also a fourth-round draft selection for the Bengals. He has made quite the impression so far during camp. That continued with a couple of catches versus Detroit. He finished the game with two receptions for 28 yards. He could have had a third catch, but it was knocked away on a contested catch opportunity.
Young could push Andrei Iosivas for snaps at the third receiver position throughout the season. His size, strength in his hands, and ability to generally win those contested catch situations are all standout traits.
Brian Parker II was a sixth-round draft selection for the Bengals this year. He played mostly right tackle during his time at Duke. For the Bengals, he has moved almost exclusively to the interior so far in camp. The majority of his snaps against the Lions came at left guard, with a handful at center late in the game.
I thought Parker looked really good, especially in pass protection. He has such a calm presence for a young lineman. He doesn't panic, and he trusts his technique. He also has the athleticism to recover when it is needed.

The person spoke to The **** ociated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the deal had not yet been announced. The 28-year-old worked out for the team on Monday.
Harris is coming off tearing his left Achilles tendon on a noncontact play in a game on Sept. 21 while with the Los Angeles Chargers.
Giants coach John Harbaugh said Harris is not 100% healthy and expected it to be a process to get him up and going if signed. As a result, it was not immediately clear how soon Harris would participate in training camp practices.
Harris is not far removed from four consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons with Pittsburgh from 2021-24.

The New York Giants are signing former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris, per Mike Garafolo. Harris visited with the Giants yesterday and will now be joining the team. The terms of the deal are yet to be known.
Harris was drafted by the Steelers in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft and rushed for 1,000 yards in each of his four seasons in Pittsburgh, never missing a game. He signed with the Los Angeles Chargers ahead of the 2025 season after the Steelers declined to pick up his fifth-year option before the 2024 campaign.
Unfortunately for Harris, his stint with the Chargers would be short-lived. He appeared in just three games before tearing his Achilles, ending his season. He now joins his former rival, John Harbaugh, who took over as head coach of the Giants after being fired by the Baltimore Ravens.

Princess Anne is sick and tired of the constant fighting tearing the royal family apart, a source tells Examiner.
So much so, the Princess Royal, 76, preparing to read Prince William, Princess Kate, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle the riot act in a bid to finally bring peace to the monarchy before it's too late, says the source.
"Anne says everybody in this situation shares some of the blame, not just the Sussexes and not just the Waleses," the source reveals. "In her view, they all need to be brought into line and told that this nonsense has gone on far too long."

"Dr. Prem Ramkumar, an orthopedic knee and hip surgeon who consults for the X Games and Long Beach State athletics, termed an ACL revision a "very big deal" and a "different beast." Dr. Nirav Pandya, professor of orthopedic surgery at UCSF, said the trauma Bosa's right knee has suffered means it will be "asking a lot" for the 2022 Defensive Player of the Year to flash his pre-injury form next month, or perhaps, this season….Before Bosa was sidelined, he told Sports Illustrated that last year's surgery had also addressed "chronic" quadriceps tendinitis that had developed from the first ACL repair on his right knee. Pandya noted it would be more problematic if Bosa's current tendinitis isn't related to his most recent ACL surgery, which Shanahan suggested it was.
"He's had quad tendinitis since he was in high school and it's been this lingering, ongoing problem," Pandya said. "The issue that you get worried about long-term tendinitis is that that can eventually lead to degeneration of a tendon. It's more ******* e to kind of have chronic issues or even tear."

"You listen to George Kittle say it—the fact that the numbers are basically what he wants—is an unbelievable thing. He is seven months out from an Achilles injury. Now, generally players do not get back on the field until nine months. The season starts about eight months after him tearing his Achilles."

The Arizona Cardinals beat the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday 27-14 in preseason action. The starters played only one series, and two of the Cardinals' top draft picks got hurt.
Offensive lineman Chase Bisontis, their second-round pick, suffered a season-ending knee injury, tearing his MCL. Running back Jeremiyah Love, the No. 3 pick in the draft, hurt his ankle and hopefully will be ready to play in the season opener. However, there is a bit of a story as to how we got to that point of information.

There was a rare bit of good injury news for San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa on Sunday.
Bosa didn't start training camp on the PUP list after tearing his ACL in Week 3 last season. The 49ers instead opted to ease him into action. Despite not participating in team drills throughout training camp, Bosa wound up dealing with tendinitis in the knee he suffered the ACL tear in. That ailment was originally labeled as "soreness" by the 49ers and Bosa was a no-show at practice in any capacity for the better part of two weeks.
A player missing practice typically means they're on a side field working out or watching the session on the sidelines. Bosa has been entirely absent while dealing with his knee injury. That changed Sunday according to ESPN's Nick Wagoner, who pointed out in his practice recap that Bosa was working out while reporters and fans were in attendance.
Perhaps most notable here: We had our first side field Bosa sighting since he began experiencing tendinitis and soreness early in camp. He did an extensive workout on the side field. A (public) step in the right direction for him.
It's not an indicator that Bosa is nearing a return, but having him work out on a side field where reporters and fans would be able to see him is a sign that the 49ers' star defensive end is at least trending in the right direction.

Packers tight end Tucker Kraft took a big step back toward the lineup on Sunday.
Head coach Matt LaFleur told reporters at a pre-practice press conference that they might be in for a treat when asked when Kraft would move into team drills and those reporters later shared that Kraft participated in 11-on-11 work for the first time since tearing his ACL last season.
Kraft has been aiming for a Week 1 return all offseason, although LaFleur said earlier this summer that he could take part in a joint practice with the Cardinals on August 26. The return to full team work would seem to make that likelier, but the team has time to make that call.
Kraft is in line for a contract extension and continued health should help his chances of landing one before the final year of his rookie deal is over.

Kendrick Perkins was going on TV talking about 'Don't play.' Get the f*** out of here, what is he talking about 'Don't play'? I knew it was a possiblity. In that moment, everyone talks about how it feels like you got kicked. I knew right away, because Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was in front of me, so I was like, 'How did he kick me?' There was a short moment while I was falling where I was like, 'How did he kick me in the back of my leg?' And then I was like, 'Oh s***'. But those emotions were much more, 'I can't believe this is happening right now,' vs. that it happened. Because injuries are a part of the game, and I know I'm going to be fine and I know we're going to be fine as a group, and life goes on. But it was just like, 'Not now. Anytime but right now.' Because everything felt like it was clicking at that moment.
