It was a welcome sight for the Sutter Union High girls volleyball team when it came into the gym following the long Labor Day weekend.
The Huskies had flip-flopped with Bear River for the top-spot in Sac-Joaquin Section Division V and lead the Bruins by .13 one-hundredths of a ratings point entering Thursday's MaxPreps rankings drop. Computerized rankings help fill out at-large berths and final playoff positioning for all 16-team brackets in October, according to SJS playoff criteria.

The Athletics faced the Toronto Blue Jays in the opener of a three-game series on Labor Day at Sutter Health Park. The Green and Gold got out to an early lead before allowing the Blue Jays to claw back late, only for the A's to win 6-5 in walk-off fashion.
After A's starter Jacob Lopez tossed a scoreless first inning, the A's generated their first scoring chance against Blue Jays starter Dylan Cease in the bottom of that inning. Athletics center fielder Henry Bolte drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third with one out. Zack Gelof knocked Bolte in with an RBI ground-rule double, putting the hosts ahead 1-0.
With two outs, the A's scored a second run when Toronto misplayed a rundown, allowing Gelof to slide home safely.

Happy Saturday, folks! Hope you're having a nice weekend. If you decide to spend it watching late-night West Coast baseball, I hope the Orioles grace you with a series win tonight. They ******* ed a win in Game One last night with a 4-3 victory in ten innings. Although Brandon Young pitched a strong seven innings, the bullpen couldn't hold onto a meager 2-0 lead, and it took extras to sort things out: two clutch base hits by Coby Mayo and Christian Encarnacion-Strand gave the birds the winning margin of victory.
Let's hope the Orioles make Game Two worth staying up for. Tonight, taking the mound at Sacramento's Sutter Health Park for the Athletics is Jack Perkins, a 26-year-old righty who debuted for the A's in 2025, and has been used mostly as a swingman. In 11 starts and 20 relief appearances in 2026, he has an ugly 6.68 ERA, although it seems he's been the victim of bad defense, to judge by his FIP (4.79) and xERA (3.96). He's still been much more effective as a reliever, going by his ERA splits (4.76 ERA in relief/8.17 ERA as a starter). His best pitch is the sweeper, which generates a 36.1% whiff rate, followed by a decent changeup and cutter. The soft spot in Perkins' ******* nal is his mid-90s four-seamer: it's been his most hittable pitch by far (.318 average, .664 slugging against, Run Value -14), and he still throws it nearly a third of the time. Perkins is also ******* e to the long ball (1.69 HR/9) and to putting runners on via the walk (3.79 BB/9) or hit-by-pitch (9 on the year).
As for the O's starter, I don't know if it's crazy or reasonable to hope for a win, given that it's unlucky Shane Baz who takes his turn on the mound tonight. Despite the fact that Baz (4.04 ERA, 3.34 FIP) has allowed three or fewer runs in 19 of his 26 starts, he doesn't have a win in his last twelve starts (which is incredible to process). And he's been pretty good! He had a 3.68 ERA in June, a 3.00 one in July, and August, while slightly worse, shows him at a 4.30 mark. Poor Baz. Can the schneid please end tonight?

HUGO – McAlester softball snapped its losing streak with a big 17-0 run rule win over Hugo Tuesday.
During their streak, the Lady Buffaloes (4-5) dropped games to strong teams like Byng, Tahlequah, Shawnee and Durant. But they shook off the rust Tuesday in the win over Hugo.
The McAlester bats came alive on the road, recording 16 hits and 13 RBIs. Carsyn Sutterfield went 3-for-4 and Emerson Hollis went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Lady Buffaloes.
Sam Shafer struck out four and walked none during her four innings in the circle.
The win could prove to be a launching pad for the McAlester festival.

Last night, the Athletics fell to 19-39 at Sutter Health Park after dropping the series-opener against the Minnesota Twins, 9-6. Starter Jeffrey Springs struggled once again, and the offense's last-ditch rally came a few runs short. Tonight presents an opportunity for the last-place A's to earn their 20th home win and force a rubber match tomorrow.
Rookie left-hander Gage Jump will be on the ***** p this evening for the home team. The 23-year-old enters his 17th start of the season with a 5-8 record, a 4.83 ERA, a 1.51 WHIP and 88 strikeouts over 82 innings. Jump has endured some turbulence lately, going 2-4 with a 6.75 ERA and a 1.83 WHIP over his past seven starts. In his most recent outing against the Kansas City Royals, Jump took the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits over four innings.
This evening, the A's would greatly appreciate a quality start from Jump in his first career appearance against the Twins. Through his first several MLB starts, Jump has alternated between stellar outings that have the team envisioning a future with him near the top of the rotation and poor performances that highlight the youngster's areas for growth as he adjusts to major league hitters. It would be beneficial for Jump to finish the season strong, although the team must be mindful of his workload to avoid increasing the southpaw's injury risk.

Both teams entered this season with playoff expectations, yet find themselves in last place in their respective mediocre divisions with two of the three worst records in the league.
A major reason behind the A's success against the Rangers was their starting pitching, as all three starters tossed six solid innings, giving the Green and Gold the chance to win each game. Tonight, A's right-hander Mason Barnett will start the series opener in Kansas City, looking to deliver his best outing since joining the starting rotation and give the team another quality start.
The 25-year-old enters his 18th appearance and fourth start of the season with a 1-3 record, a 6.16 ERA, a 1.45 WHIP and 36 strikeouts over 38 innings. After lasting five innings in his first start a few weeks ago, Barnett has failed to make it past four innings in his last two outings. Most recently, he took the loss against the Tampa Bay Rays, allowing five runs on five hits and three walks over four innings pitched.
With the A's not receiving an off day in between these two series, the team needs Barnett to pitch efficiently and effectively. Today would be as good a day as any for the youngster to earn his first win as a starting pitcher this year. Additionally, a quality start could help him maintain his place in the rotation. Veteran left-hander Jeffrey Springs will return from the injured list soon. He will likely replace either Barnett or tomorrow's scheduled starter, Jack Perkins.

Bo Sutter of Dunlap, Ill. announced on Saturday that he's received an invitation to attend a Spartans game this upcoming fall. According to a social media post from Sutter, he was invited by the Michigan State coaching staff to attend the Spartans' home game against Eastern Michigan on September 12.
Sutter is listed as a three-star athlete in the 2028 class, with a recruiting rating of 88 in 247Sports. He is ranked as the No. 37 athlete and No. 20 player from Illinois in 247Sports' composite rankings for the class, and is also listed as the No. 472 overall prospect in the 2028 class.

Monasterio and Caleb Durbin each had three hits and Jahmal Jones also homered to lead the Red Sox to a win at Sutter Health Park a night after their road winning streak ended at 10 games.
The Red Sox won despite stranding six runners over the three innings prior to Monasterio's winner.
With Romy Gonzalez at second to begin the 10th, Monasterio crushed a 2-0 fastball off Jose Suarez (1-3) as many fans wearing Red Sox jerseys cheered in the A's home stadium.

Curtis Mead's debut with the Boston Red Sox did not go as planned on Monday night.
Mead left the Red Sox's 4-2 win over the Athletics early after being hit in the hand by a pitch. Mead was up to bat in the fourth inning of the contest at Sutter Health Park when a pitch from Athletics starter Jack Perkins came up and drilled him directly in his left hand.
Mead was clearly in significant pain as he walked it off, and he was quickly replaced by Anthony Seigler.

A former California reserve deputy sheriff has been identified as the person who died after a pleasure boat carrying members of an extended family capsized in the frigid waters of San Francisco Bay near Alcatraz Island.
Clifford Joseph Boisa, 79, of Sutter County, died after the three-level recreational vessel sank Tuesday afternoon with 20 people aboard, authorities said. The Sutter County Sheriff's Office confirmed to Fox News Digital that Boisa served as a reserve deputy sheriff beginning in 1987.
Three passengers remained missing Wednesday after 16 others were rescued, including three people who were taken to local hospitals.
The U.S. Coast Guard said Wednesday it planned to suspend its search for the three missing passengers at sunset after crews spent roughly 23 hours searching more than 950 nautical square miles of San Francisco Bay.
"We have completely saturated the search area," Coast Guard Sector San Francisco Commander Capt. Jarod Tosczko said during a Wednesday news conference, thanking Good Samaritans who helped rescue people from the water.

The Athletics were .500 and a half game out of first place in the AL West just about three weeks ago after they staged a comeback, 10-inning win over the Los Angeles Angels on June 19. Now at the All-Star break, the A's are staring at a 41-55 record. They're fourth in the AL West and eight games back of the division-leading Texas Rangers.
They're 3-17 in their past 20 games, losers of 13 of their last 14 and currently mired in a nine-game skid. Looking to snap out of their midsummer malaise, the A's made a staff change Monday, firing longtime pitching coach Scott Emerson.
The Athletics rank second to last in the majors with a 5.21 ERA this season. Only the Colorado Rockies (5.44) are worse in that often fateful category. Of the A's last 17 losses, 11 of them have featured their opponents scoring six or more runs.

Mexico had so much to celebrate on Tuesday night, with the national team taking down Ecuador 2-0 in the 2026 World Cup Round of 32. And that was true for one Los Angeles Dodgers fan in attendance at the game against the Athletics at Sutter Health Park.
In the bottom of the third inning, with nothing much happening in the game, mics picked up a sound of screaming: "GOLAAAAAAAZOOOOOOO! GOALLLLLLLL! GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLL! GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!" Cut to a man behind home plate in a green jersey standing and screaming in celebration.

SACRAMENTO — Milestones have become commonplace during this era of Dodgers baseball, but Tuesday night delivered one that placed Dave Roberts in a class of his own.
Behind a career performance from Justin Wrobleski and a breakout night from Tommy Edman, the Dodgers cruised to a 9-3 victory over the Athletics at Sutter Health Park, giving Roberts the 1,000th managerial victory of his career.
The Dodgers improved to 56-30, extending their lead over the Padres to 12 games atop the National League West while continuing to separate themselves as baseball's most complete club.
For Roberts, the win was historic.
