Swimmers brandishing short, curved sticks held their breath as they somersaulted and dove towards a weighted puck at the bottom of a Hong Kong swimming pool, vying for first place in a sport likened to voluntary drowning.
The annual underwater hockey tournament, ominously advertised as "physical ****** ", nevertheless drew a roster of hardcore enthusiasts from countries across Asia to the Chinese city over the weekend.
"You have to choose when to use your breath and when not to... Anyone that's got the puck, you know that they've got some level of suffering," Leo Lines, a ****** anese-New Zealander competitor from Hokkaido, told AFP.
"I love that."
Suited up in snorkel masks and fins, players only resurface for air when they absolutely have to, and their heads remain constantly underwater so they can monitor the game.

Prince William has reportedly unknowingly imbibed his wife Kate Middleton's traits, even in her absence. The Prince of Wales seemingly echoed his wife's mannerisms during his solo visit to Somerset through spontaneous actions. Notably, the Waleses are focusing on their royal engagements amid Prince Harry's return and Charles Spencer's book drama, seemingly choosing not to react to the ongoing controversies.
Prince William reportedly appeared to emulate one of Kate Middleton's physical gestures during his solo visit to Somerset. As per The Royal Observer, the Waleses have always maintained a united front and have indulged in subtle, romantic gestures to showcase their sweet bond.
William's recent solo appearance at Somerset also seemingly confirms that he has subconsciously started mirroring Kate's expressions. During his trip, he visited the Town Football Club and interacted with senior citizens, fans, and kids at a local cafe. He rounded the trip with a visit to the fire station. While Kate wasn't there, her presence was strongly felt through William's actions. He seemingly made the same hand gestures as the Princess of Wales does when talking.
As per the outlet, the future queen is known for being a social and affable person. Not only that, her hand gestures and animated mannerisms are almost her trademark style. The prince made similar hand gestures during emergency scenarios with volunteers and young kids.
Not only that, as per the outlet, he had exciting conversations with children and even indulged them with high-fives. Fans have often viewed Middleton as a people person.

If the conversation turns to cultural icons of the '70s, it should only be a matter of time before Suzanne Somers' name gets thrown into the mix — and we can't ignore her style, either. Somers is best known for playing lovable yet ditzy blond Chrissy Snow on the hit sitcom "Three's Company," which ran for eight seasons. Spend a lazy afternoon watching reruns of the show, and you'll find no shortage of Suzanne Somers looks from "Three's Company" you can easily wear today. And out and about on the red carpet and at Hollywood parties, Somers' real-life style was no less punchy; she regularly captured the energy of the disco era with the help of sharp tailoring, flirty wrap dresses, and, yes, tons of sequins.
Somers died the day before her 77th birthday in October 2023 at her home in Palm Springs, California, amid a battle with breast cancer. We'll always remember her for her bubbly, carefree spirit, her contributions to television history, and how she absolutely owned the '70s with her style choices. Her unmatched style is definitely a great part of her legacy.

In 1979, Suzanne Somers was captured — trademark bright blond hair framed by a dark background — while in New York City. Somers was dressed casually in a look that you could totally rock today without anyone batting an eyelash. The "Step By Step" star rocked a V-neck T-shirt with a matching skirt, both in a muted sandy brown color. And because a nipped waist never hurt anybody, Somers belted the tee with a brown leather belt that screamed country-western glam.

Andrew Garfield has opened up about his desire to escape the Hollywood spotlight one day.
The Amazing Spider-Man star has spent much of the past year working on back-to-back projects, including the new Enid Blyton adaptation The Magic Faraway Tree, the action period drama The Uprising and Luca Guadagnino's Sam Altman biopic, Artificial.
In a new interview with Variety, Garfield, 43, was asked if he ever thought about leaving his career in the public eye behind.
"All the time," Garfield admitted.
"I've worked a lot this year. I've done like 11 months, 12 months, straight back-to-back projects. I want people to see those projects, so I'm gonna have to tell people about them. I get that. But if I had my druthers, people would just see them, and I could go whittle wood in the Somerset countryside and think about what the birds might be doing."

LAKEWOOD, N.J. — It's been slim pickings this year for Yankees position player prospects for the High-A Hudson Valley Renegades and they lost three of their best ones this month, all infielders.
First, Kaeden Kent went to the Giants in a trade on Aug. 3 then two players were promoted to the Double-A Somerset Patriots, Roderick Arias on Aug. 4 and Core Jackson on Aug. 11.
That left Hudson Valley with two Yankees position player prospects ranked among their top 30 by MLB Pipeline — and one of them, Wilson Rodriguez, is done for the year with a thumb injury.
The over/under for Wednesday's AL East clash between the Yankees and the Orioles is set at 9 total runs on BetMGM. Our comprehensive BetMGM Sportsbook review provides an in-depth guide on how to use their app.
The Renegades do have Eric Genther, a left-handed hitter who switched from left field to catcher this year. Opponents are running like crazy on him, but his coaching staff is seeing steady progress.

India's crushing victory over Sri Lanka in the first Test in Galle unearthed two potential long-term ****** ets in different departments — left-arm spinner Manav Suthar and batter Devdutt Padikkal.

Suthar, in particular, looks every bit a Test star in the making. In just two Tests, the 24-year-old has claimed 17 wickets at an average of 11.35, including two five-wicket hauls and his maiden 10-wicket match haul. In Galle, he showcased the classical virtues of left-arm spin, extracting loop, drift, turn and bounce.

Padikkal, meanwhile, grabbed his opportunity with both hands. Playing his first Test in 19 months after replacing the injured Sai Sudharsan at No. 3, the stylish left-hander marked his return with a majestic 167, the standout innings of the match, followed by a useful 44 in the second innings. Comfortable against spin on both the front and back foot, Padikkal has strengthened his case to retain the No. 3 slot.

Suthar made an impact from his very first ball, trapping Dinesh Chandimal with a beauty that pitched, bounced and turned away before finding the edge to Rishabh Pant. On the final day, he wrapped up Sri Lanka's tail with smart variations in pace and an effective straighter delivery.

Former India left-arm spinner and selector Venkatapathy Raju believes familiarity with subcontinental conditions and a recent county stint with Warwickshire have played a key role in Suthar's rapid rise. The youngster took 11 wickets in two county matches, including a maiden five-for against Somerset.

"I was very impressed by Suthar's attitude. He has a high-arm action, bowls close to the wicket and possesses the aggression needed to succeed as a left-arm spinner. Playing his first two Tests in familiar conditions has helped, while county cricket gave him valuable red-ball experience," Raju told TOI.

"This will do wonders for his confidence. He can bowl long spells, challenge both right-handers and left-handers and has shown all the signs of becoming a very good bowler."

India vice-captain KL Rahul credited Suthar's accuracy, subtle changes in pace and ability to exploit drift for making him such a potent threat.

"It's the subtle variations from the same action and angle. He can bowl slower or quicker without changing his arm speed. In Galle, he used the wind beautifully to get drift before the ball either straightened or came back in," Rahul said.

Rahul also praised Suthar's consistency in hitting the right areas.

"His greatest strength is his pace through the air and his ability to challenge every mode of dismissal. The line he bowls brings LBW into play, while any turn can produce catches behind. That's a special skill."

The vice-captain was equally effusive about Padikkal, with whom he shared a 150-run partnership in the first innings.

"That innings defined the Test," Rahul said. "The tempo he batted at and the fact that he converted it into a big hundred really set the game up for us. The conditions were physic

The BBC has announced that four new pundits will join its rotating cast of Match of the Day experts for the new Premier League season.
Former Tottenham and Brentford manager Thomas Frank and the recently-retired Ashley Young will be part of the coverage on the channel, along with ex-Belgium centre half Toby Alderweireld and fellow former Spurs player Robbie Keane.
The quartet join an established roster of pundits that includes Wayne Rooney and Alan Shearer. The presenting trio of Gabby Logan, Mark Chapman and Kelly Cates will continue in their second season after taking over from Gary Lineker fronting the programme.
While the long-standing highlights show remains in place, Saturday lunchtime's Football Focus has been axed after 52 years on the air.
BBC One will instead show The Football Interview, with Kelly Somers speaking to Tottenham midfielder James Maddison ahead of the first Saturday of the new top-flight season.

The Baltimore Orioles (61-64) return home tonight after a ten-game road trip and welcome the New York Yankees (69-55) to Camden Yards for the opener of a three-game series. The Yankees sit comfortably in a playoff position. They own the top Wild Card spot sitting 8.5 games ahead of the Orioles who are currently tied for the final Wild Card spot with Texas and Detroit.
The Yankees are coming off a challenging weekend series in Toronto. The Blue Jays took the first two games of the set before New York salvaged the finale on Sunday. After opening the door for the Jays in the ninth to tie the game with what seemed to be a crucial error, Ben Rice made up for the miscue with a two-run homer in the 10th inning of a 4-3 victory.
Baltimore, meanwhile, spent the weekend in St. Petersburg taking on the AL East-leading Rays. The Orioles came out aggressively, winning the first three games of the four-game set. They dropped the series finale yesterday, 7-6, despite Pete Alonso hitting his 28th home run of the season. After a rough start to his tenure in Baltimore – he hit just .175 in April – the Polar Bear has put up strong numbers for the Orioles (.267 average, 28 HRs, 81 RBIs).
The pitchers for tonight's game will be Carlos Rodón (4-2, 3.30 ERA) and Shane Baz (4-12, 4.00 ERA). Rodón is set to make his first major league start since June 28 after a stint on the injured list with left elbow inflammation. His return comes at a crucial time for a Yankees club that just yesterday placed Max Fried on the injured list with a bone bruise. Rodón looked sharp in his final rehab outing, striking out seven over 4⅓ scoreless innings at Double-A Somerset. Would not be surprising to hear the veteran is on a limited pitch count tonight. As mentioned. the Orioles counter with Shane Baz, who has been a mainstay in Baltimore's rotation throughout the season. Baz has been an innings eater, but the O's have lost nine of his last ten starts. While he has been better than that record would indicate, he was shelled in his last outing. The Twins scored five times over just three innings last Wednesday against Baz.
Lets dive into tonight's matchup and find a sweat or two.

Bishop Gorman always enters high school football season as the team to beat in Nevada. The Gaels are also usually a perennial contender on the national stage. They want to reach the top of the mountain this fall — and they've concocted quite the out-of-state schedule early in the year.
The first big test is next Friday, Aug. 21, as St. John Bosco (Calif.) travels to Las Vegas to take on Gorman at Fertitta Field. Both teams are inside the top 10 of the national Rivals Composite Rankings. More than 25 ranked prospects will be in action for what, on paper, looks like one of the games of the entire HSFB season.
$19.99 gets you a FULL year of On3 | Rivals national coverage
It'll be the season-opener for Bosco. Gorman, however, got its feet wet this weekend. The Gaels smoked Somerset Academy Losee 41-0 in a weather-shortened game on Friday night to improve to 1-0 on the year. The game was called at halftime due to inclement weather.
Junior three-star quarterback Ace Amina got the start for Gorman and threw for a touchdown, but he and senior three-star QB Chance Thomas — who rushed for a score — both saw plenty of action, alternating possessions. According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, Gorman head coach Brett Browner has not committed to naming a starter ahead of next week and both Amina and Thomas, a Kansas commit who transferred in from Anaheim Western (Calif.), could share snaps once again.

NEW YORK — Yankees pitcher Carlos Rodón is scheduled to make his second minor league rehabilitation start for Double-A Somerset.
Rodón has been on the 15-day injured list since July 3 because of left elbow inflammation. He received multiple shots, including platelet-rich plasma injections, and threw 29 of 48 pitches for strikes in his first rehab outing for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The left-hander allowed three runs and three hits over 2 2/3 innings against Rochester, with four strikeouts and two walks.
New York manager Aaron Boone has said Rodón could return to the team in a piggyback situation with another starter at first, similar to Max Fried's return from a bruised left elbow on July 22.
When he gets back, Rodón will rejoin a strong Yankees rotation that also includes Cam Schlittler, Gerrit Cole, Will Warren and Ryan Weathers.

The MLB trade deadline keeps sending shockwaves through the league, and the Yankees just made the biggest splash. New York secured Luis García Jr. from the Nationals to fix a lineup that has struggled without its stars. This deal brings a massive offensive boost right when the team needs it most. The Yankees are clearly buying now, and García is the centerpiece of that strategy.
Manager Aaron Boone knows the roster needs depth, especially with Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and Giancarlo Stanton out. García Jr. leads the National League with a .560 slugging percentage, a stat that screams power for the short porch in right field. He will not just fill a hole; he will change how the offense attacks every pitcher. This acquisition is a direct response to the team's lackluster production this season.
ESPN's Jeff Passan broke the news that the Yankees sent a package of four prospects to Washington for the infielder. MLB.According to reports, the roster features pitchers Ben Grable, Yovanny Cruz, Jack Cebert, and Jake Bird. That is a heavy price in young arms, but the return on a hitter with García's current form makes sense. The Nationals will get these four players to help their future, while the Yankees get immediate help for their playoff push.
Somerset teammates saw Jack Cebert say farewell during a match versus the Richmond Flying Squirrels, signaling his departure from the system. In 104 games this season, García Jr. has hit 23 home runs, a career high, along with 20 doubles and five triples. He is batting .283 with an .873 OPS, proving he can drive the ball consistently. A wRC+ of 134 proves he ranks among the National League's top hitters currently.
García doesn't walk much, sporting only a 4.While his walk rate sits at 3 percent, he maintains a high enough hit frequency to reach base adequately. This season's 93 games at first base have caused a logjam involving Ben Rice and Paul Goldschmidt. He also played 129 games at second base last season, where Jazz Chisholm Jr. currently sits. Jack Curry of YES Network observed that García should mainly fill first base or DH roles against right-handers to boost his effectiveness.

The two battled, sometimes door-to-door, down the stretch. A week after suffering a bad crash right before taking the checkered flag, Nedrow exacted some revenge with his third win of the season.

Notts Outlaws maintained a perfect start to their One-Day Cup campaign with a comfortable victory over Leicestershire as Lancashire posted a second win in Group A with a victory over Kent.
Haseeb Hameed's side were following up comfortable wins against Somerset and Warwickshire in their opening two matches and a third was never in doubt against the Foxes at Trent Bridge.

Foxes captain Stephen Eskinazi posted an unbeaten 93 from the top of the order, but his innings proved the exception to the rule as only one of his team-mates, Hamza Sheikh (35), made it past 20.

Several high school sports teams in the Greater Fall River area had a season to remember during the 2026 spring year.
One team — the Joseph Case softball team — advanced all the way to the top for its fourth straight state championship and eighth in program history.
The Somerset Berkley softball team had a magical run in the Division 2 tournament before falling to King Philip in the state championship game.
We honor other individual stars of the spring campaign with our recent stack of All-Scholastic teams that were published in June. If you didn't get a chance to view them then here's your chance right here:
