This week, we're turning the lens back to the early 2000s — when pop culture icons defined a generation — tracing the journeys of some beloved stars who've largely stepped back from the Hollywood glare. From dramatic career pivots and meaningful personal challenges to unexpected comebacks, here's a look at the stories behind the faces you once couldn't escape on your screen.

Once famed for her bubbly on-screen persona and stunning box-office success, Cameron Diaz stepped away from acting at the peak of her career to focus on her family and personal ventures, per The Hollywood Reporter. Always stylish, Diaz became just as celebrated for her off-screen life, including authoring two best-selling health books — The Body Book reached the No. 1 spot on the New York Times bestseller list shortly after its release in 2014, as reported by Audible.

Amanda Bynes was a comedy sensation and one of the most beloved young actresses of her generation, starring in hit TV shows and films that defined youth culture. She first rose to prominence on Nickelodeon's All That at just 10 years old before landing her own series, The Amanda Show, per Today. Despite fame and awards, her later years brought struggles with mental health and a shift away from the spotlight, including a nearly decade-long conservatorship that was terminated by a judge in 2022, according to Salon. Bynes' journey has resonated with many, offering a reminder of resilience and the challenges of child stardom.

CINCINNATI (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers marked their record-tying 14th consecutive trip to MLB's postseason with a toast of bubbly after Monday night's 4-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.
The bigger celebrations will come later.
"It's hard to say it ever feels routine, but it is the expectation here," third baseman Max Muncy said. "I always laugh whenever we clinch a postseason spot, we just do a nice little toast. The guys that haven't been here, they kind of see that and they expect a little bit more. That happens when you clinch the division."
The two-time defending World Series champions, who joined Milwaukee and Tampa Bay as teams who have secured playoff spots, cut their magic number to three for a fifth straight NL West ****** le and 13th in 14 seasons.
Los Angeles tied the Atlanta Braves' postseason run from 1991 through 2005. The Braves made five World Series trips during that span, but won only in 1995.

Milo Manheim, Chandler Kinney and more cast members from the "Zombies" film series paid tribute to co-star Carla Jeffery following her death at 33.
On Wednesday, Kinney, who played Willa Lykensen in the Disney Channel musical movie franchise opposite Jeffery's Bree, took to Instagram and shared a series of photos of the two together.
"This doesn't feel real," the "Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin" actress wrote. "Carla, the sweetest, most sparkly gal. You made every day better and brighter with your infectious positivity."
She continued. "I think part of why you brought such effervescence to Bree (aside from your immense talent) is because that's really who you were in your heart; a bubbly, vivacious heart-of-gold cheerleader who loved nothing more than to uplift those around her."
As Kinney went on, she noted that she felt "so grateful to have known [her] love," adding, "I'm going to miss laughing with you, and watching you break out your signature splits on any and every dance floor."

If the conversation turns to cultural icons of the '70s, it should only be a matter of time before Suzanne Somers' name gets thrown into the mix — and we can't ignore her style, either. Somers is best known for playing lovable yet ditzy blond Chrissy Snow on the hit sitcom "Three's Company," which ran for eight seasons. Spend a lazy afternoon watching reruns of the show, and you'll find no shortage of Suzanne Somers looks from "Three's Company" you can easily wear today. And out and about on the red carpet and at Hollywood parties, Somers' real-life style was no less punchy; she regularly captured the energy of the disco era with the help of sharp tailoring, flirty wrap dresses, and, yes, tons of sequins.
Somers died the day before her 77th birthday in October 2023 at her home in Palm Springs, California, amid a battle with breast cancer. We'll always remember her for her bubbly, carefree spirit, her contributions to television history, and how she absolutely owned the '70s with her style choices. Her unmatched style is definitely a great part of her legacy.

In 1979, Suzanne Somers was captured — trademark bright blond hair framed by a dark background — while in New York City. Somers was dressed casually in a look that you could totally rock today without anyone batting an eyelash. The "Step By Step" star rocked a V-neck T-shirt with a matching skirt, both in a muted sandy brown color. And because a nipped waist never hurt anybody, Somers belted the tee with a brown leather belt that screamed country-western glam.

Invoking a wounded innocence that their desire for sports to be simple, just like they used to be, conservatives for a decade and a half have dreaded the word "politics". Now they cannot get enough.
Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has spent 40 years in the National Football League unknown except for his defensive schemes, but last week opened his press remarks mocking the congressional testimony of Dr Anthony Fauci, jokingly invoking the Fifth Amendment before taking questions. Apropos of nothing, President Trump publicly surmised that LeBron James might be a racist. Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham is now in the act, accepting the role as the right's anti-Black, anti-transgender culture war ambassador, the role originally intended for Caitlin Clark.
If Clark has lacked the courage and dexterity to say anything beyond the milky and ambiguous, Sophie Cunningham does not suffer from such internal conflicts. Largely anonymous politically or otherwise during her eight-year career, Cunningham – she of the viral finger-point which has been adopted as a symbol of the white animosity toward the WNBA culture – is in her moment. Her comments in a lengthy 21 July ESPN profile stating her opposition to transgender athletes has earned her hero status of the specious "Protect Our Girls" movement, even though you'd need a microscope to find any critical mass of transgender women participating in sports at any level.
Cunningham plays role of the blithe and bubbly iconoclast, oblivious to the world around as she unapologetically speaks her truths, but she is every bit as political as Colin Kaepernick, Megan Rapinoe, or her locked-armed, T-shirt wearing colleagues that defined the WNBA when she first entered the league in 2019. Cunningham forged a tough, take-no-prisoners-without-taking-herself-too-seriously persona, but was too meek to address the toxic roots of her newfound fame.
So too, was ESPN, which waited nearly 75 paragraphs just to sidestep the foundation of Cunningham's rise: she is profiting from cultural fractures that may be good for her but are tearing her league apart:

As of roughly noon E.T., the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) rose 0.56% to 7,524.39, the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) climbed 0.78% to 26,073.17, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES:^DJI) added 0.24% to 52,473.28 as AI chip strength helped markets stabilize after war‑driven volatility.
Chip and optical‑communication names, including Marvell Technology (NASDAQ:MRVL), Corning (NYSE:GLW), Coherent (NYSE:COHR), and Lumentum (NASDAQ:LITE), were among the day's notable gainers amid sector‑wide demand for communications chips. However, high-valuation AI behemoth Palantir (NASDAQ:PLTR) extended its 29% decline year-to-date, dropping about 4% so far today.
Despite the U.S.-Iran ceasefire being paused for now, and the market facing a growing drumbeat of **** ysts saying we might be in "bubbly" territory, stocks surged higher today, buoyed by the strength of AI and semiconductor stocks. In addition to a handful of **** yst upgrades of semiconductor stocks, SK Hynix's upcoming U.S. ADR offering is estimated to be more than seven times oversubscribed, indicating that immense investor appetite remains in the **** e.
Elsewhere, PepsiCo (NASDAQ:PEP) unofficially kicked off earnings season this morning, delivering mixed earnings that prompted shares to dip roughly 3%. The beverages and snacks giant grew sales by 6% in the second quarter, but said it saw weaker consumer spending in the U.S. due to higher gas prices and broader macroeconomic volatility.
Whether or not the AI and technology industries are indeed in "bubbly territory" as many **** ysts suggest, there are a surprising number of S&P 500 stocks near their 52-week lows, so plenty of opportunities remain despite the indexes trading at or near all-time highs.

Melissa Gilbert took to her Instagram to pay tribute to her costar Daveigh Chase. She also reflects on child stardom and the importance of parents' roles while her husband, Timothy Busfield, faces child ****** allegations.
The Little House on the Prairie actress took to her Instagram to pen a lengthy note while she mourned the death of her co-star Daveigh Chase. She shared a picture of Chase while writing, " I only worked with Daveigh a couple of days, but I could see she was bright both in countenance and in mind. She was bubbly, sweet and professional. But there was something else there, a push or need to perform …for her parents."
The cause of death of Chase was mentioned as AIDS and chronic polysubstance use, according to OK Magazine. She also mentioned, "I'm truly heartbroken. I certainly understand substance addiction disorder, but this sweet girl's death is so much more. If I had the chance to speak to any parents who were thinking about getting their children in the industry, I would tell them to please, please make sure that they are doing it for the right reasons."
Gilbert's post comes at a time when her husband faces charges of criminal ****** ual contact of a child. According to the BBC, the allegations of ****** ual contact were brought by the child actor who worked with Busfield.
Though Busfield has denied the allegations, he surrendered to the authorities after a warrant was issued last month. Her emotional post sparked a fresh debate online about the realities of child stardom, while her Husband separately faces allegations involving a child.

For Melissa Gilbert, the death of her former costar Daveigh Chase is a cautionary tale.
The Emmy-nominated actress, who worked with a young Chase on a TV pilot, paid tribute to the late "Lilo & Stitch" star in an emotional Instagram post Monday, June 29.
"This is the [Daveigh Chase] I knew. I shot a pilot for a series with her 20+ years ago," Gilbert wrote alongside a throwback photo of Chase. "I only worked with Daveigh a couple of days, but I could see she was bright both in countenance and in mind. She was bubbly, sweet and professional. But there was something else there, a push or need to perform …for her parents."
Gilbert's remarks come two weeks after reports emerged that Chase died on June 16 at the age of 35 following a hospitalization in Los Angeles for malnutrition. Chase's cause of death was later revealed to be AIDS.
The former child star's father, John Schwallier, told The New York Times his daughter struggled with drug addiction since she was 13 and that she had been homeless and "destitute" near the LA hospital where she died.

As of late, fans have sadly been mourning actress Daveigh Chase, who recently died at the age of 35. In addition to fans, a number of Chase's former collaborators have also been speaking out and paying tribute to her. One of the latest actors to honor the late performer is Melissa Gilbert, who's speaking out about her brief experience working with Chase. And, as part of her tribute, Gilbert also got candid about her alleged experiences with child actors and seeing "dysfunction" they were embroiled in.
Melissa Gilbert took to Instagram to acknowledge Chase's death and included a throwback photo of the former child actor. The Little House on the Prairie alum explained that decades ago, she shot a pilot with Chase that apparently didn't make it to air. Gilbert shared warm thoughts about working with the Beethoven's 5th alum during her formative years. And, while the pair apparently didn't work together long on that show, it sounds like Chase left quite an impression on her older co-star due to having a lot of personality at a young age:
I shot a pilot for a series with her 20+ years ago. Two wonderful humans [Jack Coleman] and [Kevin Zegers] played my husband and son, respectively. I only worked with Daveigh a couple of days, but I could see she was bright both in countenance and in mind. She was bubbly, sweet and professional.
However, Gilbert also claimed there was "something else" she noticed while being in Chase's presence. Gilbert went on to claim that Chase displayed "a push or need to perform" for her parents. The When Calls the Heart alum – a former child star herself – didn't go into specifics about what she supposedly saw but went on to say that she had "been around a lot of stage parents" over the years. Gilbert then shared her thoughts on how a young actor's life and career can be impacted by the absence of "strong parenting":
