Deshaun Watson saw his first on-field NFL action since Oct. 20, 2024, when the Cleveland Browns traveled to Soldier Field to face the Chicago Bears in Week 1 of the 2026 NFL preseason.
Browns coach Todd Monken came away from his team's 34-10 loss impressed by what he had seen from the 30-year-old quarterback.
"It was awesome," Monken said when asked about Watson's performance during his postgame news conference. "It was so cool to watch him play. I mean, I get all of the frustration by fans, himself but for him to come back and work like he did is an unbelievable credit to him."
"He was having fun today, and that is so cool," Monken added. "And I thought he functioned at a high level. Certainly, we don't wanna be taking timeouts. We sure as heck can't take delay of games, but it was fun watching him play and watching us put the next step forward and see where we're at."

A U.S. soldier's wife who spent more than a month in federal immigration detention said she is back home after officers removed her from a deportation flight to Brazil.
Earlier this month, The ***** ociated Press highlighted Maisa Lopes Eliaser as one of dozens of spouses or parents of U.S. troops who had been detained after President Donald Trump's administration rolled back protections for military families amid its push for mass deportations. Following the AP's reporting, a group of Congressional Democrats launched an investigation into deportations of military service members and their families.
Eliaser was placed on a deportation flight Wednesday to her native Brazil when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers on the plane received a phone call about her mid-flight, she told the AP. She said she was then asked by an ICE officer whether she wanted to continue on to Brazil or go back to the U.S.
"Who made the call? We don't know," said Eliaser's husband, Army Staff Sgt. Alexis Jaramillo. "But someone made the phone call, and then she came back."
While other detainees were led off the plane in Brazil, Eliaser stayed on board and returned to Louisiana. ICE officers told her that she was "famous" because there were videos about her case, she said.

There are things in life that just seem to fit together perfectly. Macaroni and cheese. Thunder and lightning. Arnold Schwarzenegger and tanks.
Long before he was the "Governator" of California, prior to the "Austrian Oak" becoming the world-famous action star he is today, and even before he was winning Mr. Olympia bodybuilding ******* les, Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger was in the Austrian Army learning to drive tanks.
His fascination with the big armored combat vehicle started when he was a child growing up in Thal, Austria. During an interview with Graham Bensinger in 2016, he recalled that the British occupied the region near his home after WWII and routinely drove by his house in big trucks and tanks. Soldiers would jump out and scan the area with their binoculars making sure the coast was clear, then move along.
As the occupying force, these soldiers were trained to reach out to the Austrian community and treat them well so they wouldn't be considered enemies. Schwarzenegger said the British soldiers were always good to the kids. They gave them candy and put them up on top of the tanks so they could play around.
When he joined the Austrian Army at 18, Schwarzenegger naturally wanted to become a tanker. The one he trained in was the 1951 M-47 Patton with an 810-horsepower Chrysler V12 twin-turbo gas engine. According to Arnold, the 50-ton beast is 28 feet long and 11 feet high, and it was initially built for use in the Korean War before it was given to the Austrian Army.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine paid tribute on Saturday to Oleksiy Yukov, a volunteer who spent more than two decades recovering bodies of civilians and soldiers — many of them Russian — killed by war. He was 40.
An Orthodox Christian service was held at the Cathedral of Saint Volodymyr, in central Kyiv, where thousands of people gathered to pay their respects following his death in a landmine explosion during a recovery mission on Wednesday.
Mourners also gathered at Kyiv's main Maidan Square, many dropping to their knees as a sign of respect as his casket was brought to the site. Memorial services were also held in other cities.
Yukov founded the organization known as Platsdarm, or Bridgehead, because he believed that all the dead deserve a proper burial. He became known as a "collector of souls."

JERUSALEM, Aug 9 (Reuters) - Israel's military on Sunday closed the West Bank village of Taybeh to non-residents, saying it aimed to prevent growing attacks on Palestinians by Israeli settlers across the West Bank.
The order, the military said, only applies to Israelis and not to Palestinians. A spokesperson said turning Taybeh into a closed military zone was "due to some violent attacks by Israelis in the region."
"Upon receiving any report of violations of the order, IDF soldiers are dispatched to the area and operate to disperse the gatherings and detain suspects in order to protect the citizens of the area and to maintain order," the military said in a statement.
Taybeh is one of the only Christian villages remaining in the West Bank and was visited last year by the Greek Orthodox patriarch and the Roman Catholic cardinal of Jerusalem.
It is also home to the Taybeh Brewing Co, widely considered the Middle East's oldest microbrewery.

EASTERN UKRAINE (AP) — The commander leading Ukraine's drone war says his country's recent strikes in Crimea are the first phase of a campaign aimed at rendering the peninsula — illegally annexed by Russia in 2014 — unusable as a staging ground for Russian forces.
Maj. Robert "Magyar" Brovdi, one of Ukraine's most prominent commanders among a new generation of soldiers, said his forces could strike seven times more military targets in Crimea if the money pledged by Western allies came faster.
"Crimea falls within the key conceptual pillars on the path to ending the war," Brovdi told The ****** ociated Press in an interview.
Despite that shortfall, Ukraine's summer campaign in Crimea has already inflicted significant damage: striking rail bridges, oil depots and power infrastructure to disrupt supply lines and blind Russian air defenses as drones fly in.
Brovdi said his forces are equipped at just 14% of what they would need to carry out the Crimea campaign at full capacity.

Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken has spent the first 10 days of training camp putting the offense through its paces as he ponders what to do with an uninspiring quarterback room.
Monken has the unenviable task of choosing between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders to start the August 15 preseason game against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field.
It is not a make-or-break decision by any means; Monken has said that he expects to give both Watson and Sanders a start in the preseason. And depending on which day of the week it is, and which quarterback fans are predisposed to prefer, either Watson has flexed his veteran presence to firmly grasp the QB1 role, or Sanders has shown enough improvement and grasp of the offense to be the obvious choice.
Thankfully, at least as it pertains to the game against the Bears, we all may know soon enough which quarterback will be in the huddle for the first offensive series of the preseason, as Monken and the staff will spend the next few days reviewing the candidates and then make the decision public (quotes via The Beacon Journal):

I've never seen a documentary about Girl Scout Cookies before, so I went into Alysa Nahmias's "Cookie Queens" figuring that it might include, among other things, a tantalizing history of this beloved American institution — a rundown of the nine current varieties of Girl Scout Cookie (my favorite: Samoas, obvi! With Tagalongs a close second), a survey of some of the dozens of discontinued flavors (Rasberry Rallies, we hardly knew ye), and — more to the point — a look at how Girl Scout Cookies came to be, how the Girl Scout Cookie season developed into a wholesome Middle American pastime, and what Girl Scout Cookies have meant, through the decades, to those of us who hungrily consume them and to all the girls who've devoted themselves to selling boxes of them.
But no! "Cookie Queens" includes none of that stuff. The movie unfolds entirely in the present and never gives you even a fleeting sense of the past, of how Girl Scout Cookies rose in prominence to become the phenomenon they are today. (In case you're wondering, they were launched in World War I to raise money for U.S. soldiers.) The opening credits, set to the Julie Ruin's "Cookie Road," which sounds like a great lost track from the B-52's, play over black-and-white photographs and old film footage of Girl Scouts from bygone eras. But once the credits are over, the movie gets down to its single-minded theme and obsession: how Girl Scout Cookies, once a quaint piece of Americana, have lurched into their late-capitalist phase, with the girls who sell them vying to become champions by fashioning themselves into 12-year-old entrepreneurial go-getters.

The Chicago Bears are coming off an impressive first season with head coach Ben Johnson, who led them from worst to first with an 11-6 record, an NFC North championship and the franchise's first playoff win in nearly two decades.
There some who have Chicago pegged for regression in 2026, due to their difficult strength of schedule and playing in a competitive division. But USA Today's Nate Davis is not one of them. In fact, Davis predicts the Bears will repeat as NFC North champions with a 12-5 record, earning the No. 2 seed once again and falling to the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC divisional playoffs.
Regression is certainly possible given their reliance on a league-high 33 takeaways during last year's magic carpet ride … plenty of that magic rubbing off on QB Caleb Williams' right arm in the most high-leverage situations. The reigning division champs have also drawn the league's most difficult schedule based on their opponents' collective winning percentage in 2025 (.550). Yet overall progression in Year 2 under HC Ben Johnson is just as likely, ******* uming Williams and Co. continue to master an offense which spotlights a daunting run game and should get more from a diverse and talented group of pass catchers – perhaps enough to finally make Williams' the 106-year-old franchise's first 4,000-yard passer after he fell 58 yards short of the mark in 2025. Playing three of the first four games at Soldier Field should help.
While regression is certainly possible, as Davis notes, there's also a good chance of improvement after a full year with players in Johnson's offense, young talent and with players returning from injury across the roster that the Bears will make an even stronger impression.

In 2007, actor and comedian Robin Williams traveled to Kuwait for an appearance at Camp Arifjan.
Williams was doing his best to entertain the troops when they suddenly stopped paying attention to the stage. They immediately shifted their focus behind them to render honors as the American flag was lowered. Williams wasn't so much offended as mildly perplexed. At first, he didn't understand what was going on.

Once the service members explained it to Williams, he brought it back to why he traveled 8,000 miles from home.
"Sort of reminds you why we're here, doesn't it?" Williams replied, according to a 2014 Defense Department article.
Here are seven celebrities who were committed to showing their appreciation for the United States military.

We start with the OG of military entertainers. Hope performed for troops domestically and overseas for five decades, beginning with a performance at March Field in California in 1941. Hope, whose "Road to…" films with Bing Crosby became popular with moviegoers, never tired of traveling to see troops.
His 57 tours with the United Service Organizations conveyed his appreciation to his adopted country. Born in London in 1903, Hope moved to America at an early age. He became a U.S. citizen when he was 17 years old.
"He brought such enthusiasm, brought your life back to you," Navy Seabee Ron Ronning said of Hope's last USO show during the Vietnam War in late 1972. "You felt like you were renewed."
Hope died on July 27, 2003, at the age of 100.

Lee Greenwood has "God Bless the USA," perhaps the quintessential patriotic song. Few singers, though, compiled a music catalog that honored the military quite like Keith.
The "American Soldier," "Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue," and "Call a Marine" singer participated in 18 USO tours. By one estimate, he performed in front of 250,000-plus troops in 17 countries. When mortar fire interrupted a set in Afghanistan, Keith left the stage. He and troops sprinted about a hundred yards to a concrete bunker. There, he signed autographs until he could return to doing what he did best.
"I've met so many great, brave service men and women over the years and had so many wonderful experiences, that I can barely remember them all," Keith said in 2012. "… I won't ever stop doing my part to extend my thanks."
Keith died in 2024 at the age of 62.

Jeremie Frimpong sparked more defensive injury fears for Liverpool after he was substituted late into their dismal 4-2 pre-season collapse against Leeds in Chicago.
The right-back asked to be replaced 13 minutes from time of their defeat at Soldier Field, which saw Andoni Iraola suffer his first defeat as Reds manager.
It comes after Joe Gomez suffered a muscle injury in the first match of their USA tour, a 4-2 win over Sunderland, which has ruled him out for the start of the Premier League season.
Iraola therefore cannot afford any more fitness problems in defence and is hopeful that his withdrawal was just a precaution, citing Frimpong's issue as nothing more than "overload".

Pre-season can be a strange old business. One minute you are talking about shape, sharpness and minutes in the legs, the next you are dealing with frayed tempers and a squad that suddenly looks thinner than anyone would like. That is where Liverpool find themselves heading into their meeting with Leeds United at Soldier Field in Chicago.
There is a serious look to this summer for Liverpool. CHICAGO — When it comes to promoting nostalgia, no one does it quite like the Chicago Blackhawks.
So it’s not surprising the Hawks would bring back franchise legend Patrick Kane at 37 to re-create memories of the three-time Stanley Cup champions of the 2010s, pairing him with the next franchise savior — Connor Bedard — through the 2027-28 season.
Of course, any resemblance between those teams and the current edition of the Hawks is coincidental, and you don’t need AI to make a 37-year-old Kane look much different from his 19-year-old self.
Kane signed a two-year deal Thursday with an annual average of $8 million, which reminds us of his number, 88. It’s seen by many as overpaying for a player whose best years are in the past, but considering the marketing aspect for the Hawks, it’s probably worth every penny.
Word of the signing spread quickly, almost as though it was part of a well-planned advertising campaign. CHICAGO (AP) — An active-duty soldier who was hit by a stray bullet during a shooting outside the White House announced on Tuesday that he plans to sue the Secret Service over his life-threatening injuries.
Pfc. Benjamin Del Real Jr., 25, was visiting the capital on May 23 and hoping to snap pictures with his sister and father outside the White House when a gunman opened fire. Secret Service fired back, killing the man, and a bullet struck Del Real in the stomach, causing serious injuries that required emergency surgery. Part of his digestive system had to be removed.
Del Real filed notice of a personal injury claim on Tuesday, saying he plans to sue for $25 million under the Federal Tort Claims Act. He accused the Secret Service of botching its response to the shooting and failing to adequately protect him and other bystanders, he and his lawyer, Joseph Murphy, said Tuesday at a news conference.
"I, my father and Benjamin all feared for our lives, and the moment that I saw Ben bleeding was undoubtedly the scariest moment of my life," said his sister, Sara Del Real.
The Secret Service has not said whether its agents fired the bullet that struck Del Real. The Metropolitan Police Department said earlier this summer that the ballistics on that bullet had not yet been returned. Metropolitan Police Department spokesman Lee Lepe said Tuesday the investigation is ongoing.

The Pentagon on Monday identified two U.S. soldiers who were killed when Iran attacked an American base in Jordan on Friday, while they also said they had found unidentified remains that could be those of a third soldier reported as missing in action. The U.S. military unleashed airstrikes against Iran on Saturday evening in retaliation for Tehran hitting two military bases in Jordan a day prior, during which two U.S. service members were killed, the U.S. Central Command announced (Centcom).
The new wave of strikes began at 6 p.m. EDT in what U.S. officials said was an effort to further degrade Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and "punish" the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces who launched missiles and drones against U.S. soldiers in Jordan on Friday.
Apart from the U.S. service members who were killed in action in Jordan, one service member is currently missing, according to Centcom. The U.S. military death toll has now risen to 16 since the start of the conflict.
Four U.S. service members were medically evacuated to Jordanian hospitals and they have been discharged since. Other personnel who sustained "minor injuries" have returned to duty, according to the U.S. military.
