Shane Bieber melted down, which cost the Jays a chance to win but probably more importantly derailed a string of solid starts that had hopefully been pushing his trade value back up. Also, Vladimir Guerrero jr. left the game before the bottom of the fourth after legging out an infield single and throwing error in the third. It was later reported to be a right hamstring injury. So a good day all around.
We got a fun moment before the game as Louis Varland and his brother Gus, recently recalled from AAA by the Nationals, got to do the lineup card exchange.
There was an hour long rain delay before we could get going tonight. Cade Cavalli didn't look bothered, but it looked like the delay really threw Shane Bieber. He couldn't get any of his pitches across, missing badly all over the plate. After the Jays were retired in the first with just a Nathan Lukes single erased by a Vladimir Guerrero jr. double play ball, Bieber walked two the first three Washington hitters. Then CJ Abrams reached on an infield ground ball when Bieber couldn't find the bag while recieving Luis Urias' toss, loading the bases with just one out. Walks to Keibert Ruiz and Daylen Lile forced in a pair of runs. A Nasim Nunez sac fly plated Abrams to make it 3-0. Then another walk, to Jorbit Vivas, re-loaded the bases, and a sixth, to Jacob Young, pushed yet another run across. That was enough for the Jays, who called for Brendon Little. He got a ground out to finally end the inning.

Cecilia Cavallin has renewed her contract with Juventus until 2029, and will spend the 2026/27 season on loan with Parma.
The 21-year-old forward joined Juventus in January 2025, and spent the remainder of that 2024/25 campaign on loan with H&D Chievo Women.

The Washington Nationals are finally getting the dividend on Cade Cavalli, whom they picked in the first round of the 2020 MLB draft. Over the last two months, the right-hander has delivered on the expectations that were long awaited.
In his last six starts, Cavalli has posted a 3-0 record with a 2.43 ERA, striking out 45 batters in 33.1 innings. That's an eye-popping strikeout rate of more than 12 batters per nine innings.

After back to back bullpen meltdowns, the Nats look to get off the mat yet again and try to avoid the sweep. Staying above .500 going into the All-Star Break feels big for the morale of this team. On paper, this pitching matchup should be favorable as well.

Boston Red Sox fans will have to wait until All-Star Week to see their standout first baseman play again. Willson Contreras will end up missing five games via suspension, including Thursday’s 2-1 win over the Chicago White Sox, for the scrum he took part in with the Washington Nationals at Fenway Park on June 30.
MLB ruled before Thursday’s game in Chicago that, following Contreras’ appeal, his seven-game ban had been reduced, albeit by only two games.
Nationals starting pitcher Cade Cavalli, the instigator in what became a benches-clearing scuffle, also had his seven-game suspension cut down to five games. The right-handed hurler began serving his punishment on Monday; however, he won’t have to miss his next start, which is scheduled for Sunday against the New York Yankees.
Contreras, meanwhile, won’t be able to play for the Red Sox until Game 2 of a July 17 doubleheader versus the Tampa Bay Rays. That said, he will take part in the Home Run Derby and could see the field in the All-Star Game as well, now that he’s a replacement for Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

The Washington Nationals finally had a reliever that looked good, and they sent him down. Well that is quite the oversimplification, but I did with Eddy Yean got to stay with the team after his electric debut. However, he threw 28 pitches, so he was not going to be available for a few days.
Now that he is on the 40-man roster and made that kind of first impression, there is no doubt that Eddy Yean will be back. I just hope it is sooner rather than later. The big right hander made his debut in a tough spot. Cade Cavalli just did not have it today, so Yean had to come in during the third inning with two on. He was able to stop the bleeding in that inning, and things just went from there.
Yean came in the ball game and attacked with his power stuff. That was a breath of fresh air for this bullpen. Yean’s heater averaged 97.8 MPH yesterday. The Nats bullpen just does not have that kind of velocity in it. I take a liking to big fireballers out of the bullpen, and Yean certainly fits that description. Seeing a guy who looks like a defensive tackle flirt with triple digits is pretty awesome if you ask me.
While Yean’s fastball is in the upper 90’s, his primary putaway pitch yesterday was his changeup. All three of his strikeouts came on the change, which has also been his primary whiff pitch in the minors. The pitch looks and moves a lot like his sinker, it just comes in about 8 to 9 MPH slower. That makes things really tough on hitters.
That first strikeout is a really good example of how his changeup plays. It does not have insane movement, but hitters are just out in front of the pitch. That leads to whiffs or ground ******* . Those ground ******* are a big part of Yean’s game. In the minors, his GB rate was 54.1%. Yesterday, Yean got a couple ground ball outs as well. Despite the big velocity, he projects more as a ground ball artist than a guy who gets a ton of strikeouts.

BOSTON — With Willson Contreras facing the possibility of a suspension after his involvement in a brawl with the Nationals and pitcher Cade Cavalli on Wednesday, the Red Sox made a deal to add some corner infield depth.
Boston finalized a trade to obtain Brett Harris from the Athletics for right-handed pitching prospect Ben Hansen, sources confirmed early Wednesday. The A’s designated Harris for ******* ignment four days ago. He was optioned to Triple-A Worcester.
Harris, who just turned 28, has appeared in 73 games for the Athletics over the last three years. Mainly playing third base, the Gonzaga product has logged a career .194 average with three homers and 17 RBIs in the majors. He appeared in 32 games last year and hit .274 with a .692 OPS. The A’s have mainly kept Harris at Triple-A this season and he has posted a .336 average with five homers, 34 RBIs and a .978 OPS in 37 games in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. He has been limited to just five MLB games in 2026.
Harris is a right-handed hitter who is considered a strong defender and has logged time at third base (151 innings), first base (98) and second base (52) this season. He has minor league options remaining, so he’ll go to Triple-A Worcester to start, but he could be in play for a call-up if Contreras is suspended. The Red Sox cleared a spot on their 40-man roster late Tuesday by designating reliever Tommy Kahnle for ******* ignment.
Hansen, 24, was Boston’s 20th round pick (out of BYU) in the 2024 draft. He has pitched at High-A Greenville this season, logging a 4.50 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 41 ⅔ innings over 13 games (two starts). That incident was small potatoes compared to the one that took place Tuesday night at Fenway Park.
Contreras took issue with some trash talk being delivered by Washington Nationals pitcher Cade Cavalli, who yelled “sit down, boy” after striking the ejection-prone batter in the fourth inning. Contreras wasted no time confronting the hurler and a tense situation boiled into a full-on benches-clearing brawl. Cavalli then appeared to yell something in Contreras’ direction, and the first baseman heard it. At that point, while walking back to the dugout, Contreras turned toward the mound, apparently to ask Cavalli if he was talking to him.

Entering the season, I would guess that Paul Toboni fully anticipated being sellers at the trade deadline. However, year one under this new regime has exceeded all expectations. The Nats are currently 39-36 and tied for the third wild card spot. This could create a conundrum for the Nats new President of Baseball Operations at the August 3rd trade deadline.
Yesterday, Jeff Passan released an article ranking trade candidates and also listed some potential suitors. There were 100 names on the list, but he only gave a suitor list for the first 25. The Nats were listed as a potential fit for Joe Ryan, Reid Detmers, Jose Soriano, Luis Arraez and Matt Chapman. With that news out there, this could turn out to be a very entertaining deadline.
The last time the Nats were buyers was all the way back in 2019, when Mike Rizzo patched up a leaky bullpen. Since then, the Nats have still been very active at trade deadlines, but they have been selling pieces off instead of buying.
We still have a long way to go before August 3rd, but the fact the Nats are listed as potential buyers is exciting. Unsurprisingly, almost all of the names listed as fits for the Nats have team control beyond 2026. The only rental listed is Luis Arraez, who seems like an unlikely target to me.
