One day after somewhat surprisingly leaving him off their initial 53-man roster, the New York Giants are signing veteran wide receiver/return man Braxton Berrios to their practice squad.
With Calvin Austin having suffered a season-ending torn ACL, Berrios figures to be the primary punt returner and part of the primary kickoff return duo with Deonte Banks. Teams can elevate players from the practice squad three times before having to add them to their 53-man rosters, and the Giants figure to do that with Berrios.
The Giants cut the 30-year-old Berrios on Sunday, enabling them to keep second-year tight end Thomas Fidone rather than exposing him to waivers in an effort to get him to the practice squad.
Entering his eighth season, Berrios has averaged 11.3 yards on 100 career punt returns, 24.9 yards on 91 kickoff returns, and has 140 career pass receptions.

The Golden State Warriors filled out their 15-man roster earlier this week by signing two new free agents, former Utah Jazz forward Georges Niang and Brandon Williams, a former Dallas Mavericks point guard. Following their arrival to the Bay Area, both of them have selected their jersey numbers ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Beginning with Niang, he'll wear No. 32, a number he hasn't worn since his rookie season (2016-17) with the Indiana Pacers. Since then, Niang wore 31 for the Utah Jazz and No. 20 for three different franchises. The last Warriors player to wear No. 32 was Trayce Jackson-Davis, who wore the jersey for the past two and a half seasons before being traded to the Toronto Raptors.

For the second day in a row, the San Francisco Giants have placed a starting pitched on the Injured List with a potentially devastating injury. On Tuesday, it was lefty Carson Whisenhunt, who left Monday's start with elbow discomfort and is now headed for Tommy John surgery. And on Wednesday, it was righty Adrian Houser, who left Tuesday's game with elbow discomfort and will now hope for better news than his teammate.
The Giants officially placed Houser on the 15-Day Injured List with a right forearm strain. Taking his place on the roster is right-handed reliever Braxton Roxby, who had his contract purchased from AAA Sacramento. To make ******* e on the 40-man roster for Roxby, the Giants moved Whisenhunt to the 60-Day IL.
The hope is that Houser, who is under contract for next year, has avoided a catastrophic injury. He sounded fairly optimistic after the game, which is a good sign. We'll have to wait and see.
As for Roxby, this will be his chance to make his MLB debut. The 27-year old was an undrafted free agent following the truncated 2020 draft, and came to the Giants in the Taylor Rogers trade before the 2025 season. He has just a 4.11 ERA and a 4.92 FIP with Sacramento this season, but has been pitching very well over the last month or two.
He's a four-pitch pitcher, who this year has relied fairly heavily on a slider, sinker, and cutter, with his four-seam fastball — which averages 94.6 mph — being used quite a bit less frequently than that trio. The fastball and slider have really stymied AAA hitters this year, while the cutter has been hit fairly hard and the sinker has been demolished. It will be interesting to see what pitch mix the Giants have him throw.

It did not end the way the Chicago Bears had hoped, but starting quarterback Caleb Williams was able to get his first preseason action on Saturday night against the Cincinnati Bengals, fresh off the heels of a joint practice on Thursday.
The Bears ended up losing the game against the Bengals, 27-9, after putting up a sloppy effort on both sides of the ball. There were a lot of penalties and that was Williams' main complaint about the game.
"It felt good and smooth out there, no complaints other than needing to avoid penalties," Williams said. "When we get penalties, it's my job and the other guys' job to get us back in position to help Ben (Johnson) out. There aren't many calls for second- or third-and-20, so we just need to do a better job with that. But it was good getting back into game mode."
Williams completed two passes in this game -- the first to wide receiver Rome Odunze for 18 yards and the second to tight end Colston Loveland for 10 yards -- on five attempts for 28 yards. He also had a completion to running back Roschon Johnson that did not count due to an illegal contact penalty against the Bengals.
Chicago's starters got all the way down to Cincinnati's 17-yard line before a holding penalty against left tackle Braxton Jones set them back 10 yards. They were not able to overcome that penalty and had to settle for a 45-yard field goal from kicker Cairo Santos. It was Santos' first of three field goals in the game; he also missed a 53-yard field goal.

As the left tackle competition with the Chicago Bears heats up between Braxton Jones, Theo Benedet, Kiran Amegadjie and Jedrick Wills, the Bears got some promising news about their starting left tackle from last season, Ozzy Trapilo.
Jones started last season as Chicago's left tackle before Trapilo eventually became the starter, replacing Benedet. In the Bears' playoff win against the Green Bay Packers, Trapilo tore his patellar tendon that was expected to sideline him for most of the 2026 season. But, that timeline has changed drastically when he was activated off the physically unable to perform list and back at practice. Quarterback Caleb Williams sounded off on Trapilo' to be back in practice and 's return and his quick recovery.
"Excited. Obviously, he played a lot for us last year being the left tackle for me, and so I'm excited for him, especially being able to recover, so fast with a pretty bad injury," Williams said. "So I'm excited for him, excited for us, and excited for him to get back on the field whenever that happens, whenever he's healthy and ready."

After missing the entire series against the San Francisco Giants and the series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Colorado Rockies officially placed Hunter Goodman on the 10-day injured list with a left shoulder strain, retroactive to August 15.
Goodman, 26, played the entire series in Arizona last week, catching the first two games before serving as the designated hitter in the third game. During the series, he went 1-for-9, with the lone hit being a triple. He was initially in the lineup in three of the last four games but was scratched hours before first pitch each time.
The two-time All-Star catcher has had a prolific year at the plate as a key run-producer in the Rockies lineup. Entering play on Monday, Goodman is batting .251/.320/.541 with 34 home runs and 69 RBI. In his absence, the Rockies have utilized Brett Sullivan, who has batted .316 (6-for-19) with three home runs and eight RBIs during the last road trip.
In a corresponding move, the Rockies have recalled Braxton Fulford from Triple-A Albuquerque. Fulford carries a .177/.254/.290 slash with one home run and seven RBI on the season in 40 games with the Rockies. During his time with Albuquerque, Fulford is batting .270/.399/.484 with five home runs and 21 RBI in 35 games. His numbers have been excellent during his time in the Pacific Coast League, but the hit tool and plate discipline haven't quite translated in his limited big league action.

The Chicago Bears' ongoing battle at left tackle took an interesting turn ahead of Tuesday's practice, where head coach Ben Johnson announced that it would be Braxton Jones working with the first-team offense.
Jones suffered a minor knee injury during practice on Aug. 6, and he's making his return to team activities on Tuesday. With Jones sidelined, the Bears had been rotating Kiran Amegadjie and Jedrick Wills Jr. with the starters. Johnson said that both Amegadjie and Wills will get some looks at right tackle while Theo Benedet, who's practiced exclusively at right tackle, will finally see some action on the left side with the second-team offense Tuesday.
Another interesting development is the return of Ozzy Trapilo, who'd established himself as the starting left tackle before suffering a ruptured patellar tendon during the team's wild-card playoff win back in January. Trapilo, who was expected to miss most of the 2026 season, returned in record time just seven months after what some initially believed might be a career-altering injury.

Chicago Bears running back Kyle Monangai appears to have avoided a serious knee injury but his status for Week 1 may be in jeopardy. According to ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, Monangai suffered a hyperextended knee after getting tangled up with defensive tackle Grady Jarrett during Sunday's practice that will cause him to miss multiple weeks.

The Chicago Bears got a big return to their roster this weekend as it was announced that the team has activated offensive lineman Ozzy Trapilo from the physically unable to perform list, and he was spotted working during Sunday's practice.

Perhaps never before has the Utah Open had such a Utah-centric leaderboard as it does after two rounds of the annual golf tournament, celebrating its 100th year this year at Riverside Country Club.
The top 11 golfers after 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament, sponsored by Larry H. Miller Company, are all Utah born-and-bred and each of the golfers is in his 20s with most having experience playing at one of the state's colleges.
Blake Tomlinson, a 27-year-old former University of Utah golfer, who won 2022 Utah Open, fired a 10-under-par 62 Saturday to take a two-stroke lead into Sunday's final round with a 16-under 128 total.
Two former BYU golfers, Carson Lundell and Simon Kwon, are tied at 130 with former Utah Tech golfer Jackson Rhees, while two more ex-Cougars, Rhett Rasmussen and Tyson Shelley, are tied for fifth, another stroke back at 131. It's fair to wonder if the Chicago Bears can really have another top offensive line until we see how the new center and left tackle gel with the three returning starters. But that's not stopping some publications from picking them as a top ten unit heading into the 2026 season.
Sharp Football ******* ysis has them ranked sixth, and FTN Fantasy ranks them sixth as well, saying, "If Chicago can get average play at left tackle and center, they can become a top three offensive line again. If not, this unit may need even more magic from Caleb Williams."
Pro Fooball Network has them ranked second, ESPN projects the Bears as the third-best offensive line, while Fantasy Pros has them fifth, saying, "While the left tackle spot could be an open competition between three players, Darnell Wright at right tackle and Thuney at left guard make this offensive line a top-five unit."
Head coach Ben Johnson seems locked in with Garrett Bradbury as his starting center, but when asked on Thursday morning if the play of Braxton Jones, who has taken the bulk of the left tackle reps, has hm ready to name a starter, he said this.

You know, Kiran's [Amegadjie] certainly taking some reps over there, Jedric [Wills Jr.], Theo's [Benedet] in the mix. This is not a done deal by any stretch of the imagination."

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Dustin May won his Milwaukee debut and Jackson Chourio and Gary Sánchez hit home runs as the Brewers defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2 on Thursday afternoon.
After losing the opener, the Brewers (72-43) won the final three games in the series.
May (6-7), acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals in a trade deadline deal on Monday, turned in a quality start, giving up two runs and three hits in six innings. He walked three and struck out five in the 97-pitch outing.
The Brewers jumped out early on Chourio's 15th homer of the season, a solo shot off Braxton Ashcraft (11-5) with one out in the first.

The Chicago Bears were back for the eighth practice of training camp on Thursday, which was their third padded workout of the week.
The Bears were back in pads after a day in shells, and the intensity was really cranked up another level, where things got chippy and feisty between the offense and defense. Unfortunately, the biggest storyline of the day was the injuries. After losing safety Coby Bryant earlier this week, defensive end Montez Sweat and left tackle Braxton Jones were among the four players injured. The good news is Sweat and Jones' injuries don't look to be significant. There were also some notable standout players during Thursday's workout while the offense finally found success in the two-minute drill.
Here's what we learned from the eighth practice of training camp:
Thursday's practice might've been the most physical yet this summer. According to Brad Biggs, the "intensity has been turned up a couple levels," noting the 9-on-7 run drill was "feisty." Adam Jahns added that it was a "chippy" practice where there was "lots of shoving. A couple skirmishes." According to Patrick Finley, things were so physical that, at one point, linebacker D'Marco Jackson needed a new facemask. That intensity was notable during the 9-on-7 run drill, which Courtney Cronin praised. "The physicality is at its peak this morning. Team periods opened with 9 on 7 run drills. Cannot remember the last time I saw the Bears rep this drill. Old school football."

Jed Hoyer finished his media scrum in the Cubs dugout at Wrigley Field with a simple phrase: "I'm tired."
Who could blame him?
Hoyer's front office made a flurry of moves before the MLB trade deadline Monday evening, adding four new pitchers and an outfielder onto the roster in a 24-hour span.
It was an aggressive deadline for Hoyer, who gave up quality young talent in exchange for a chance to go deep into the playoffs.
Included in the haul was a starting pitcher Hoyer termed the Cubs' "white whale" (Kevin Gausman), a veteran starter who also has vast experience pitching out of the bullpen (Clay Holmes), a dynamic reliever who piles up the strikeouts (Ryan Zeferjahn), a southpaw that will factor into future rotation plans (Braxton Garrett) and a right-handed-hitting outfielder that fills a need for this current team (Tyrone Taylor).

CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs are poised to acquire pitcher Clay Holmes and outfielder Tyrone Taylor from the New York Mets for touted infield prospect Jefferson Rojas.
It's the latest effort by the busy Cubs to replenish an injury-depleted pitching staff as they attempt to chase down first-place Milwaukee in the NL Central and hang onto the National League's top wild-card spot.
Earlier in the day, Chicago obtained reliever Ryan Zeferjahn from the Los Angeles Angels for two minor leaguers: catcher Moisés Ballesteros and right-hander Mason McGwire — son of retired slugger Mark McGwire. The team also added left-hander Braxton Garrett from the Miami Marlins for a pair of minor leaguers: infielder Jonathon Long and right-hander Jace Beck.
Garrett was optioned to Triple-A Iowa.
Those deals came one day after the Cubs augmented their rotation by acquiring veteran starter Kevin Gausman in a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays.
