Postmaster General David Steiner, who took office in July 2025 after the White House forced out his predecessor, has expressed frustration over a lack of help from the White House and Congress in addressing the mail service's long-running financial woes, the people said.
At the same time, the Postal Service was thrust to the center of a debate over the federal government's role in voting after Trump directed it in March to serve as a clearinghouse for mail ballots. The Supreme Court on Monday blocked the agency from implementing key elements of the plan, dealing the White House a significant setback.
The pressures culminated in a contentious June Senate hearing, where lawmakers from both parties interrogated Steiner over poor delivery service, Trump's ballot restrictions and his compensation.

All signs appear to be pointing up for Jeremiyah Love ahead of Week 1.
The Arizona Cardinals rookie running back has participated in all three practice sessions this week, as he is now four weeks removed from suffering a high-ankle sprain on his left leg against the Las Vegas Raiders in preseason.
While Love was officially listed as limited on the first two days of practice this week, he did not appear to have any restrictions during the portions open to media. During those sessions, Love was able to cut off his injured ankle at speed, and participated in full-team jog-throughs, alternating with veteran running back Tyler Allgeier.
When asked before practice on Friday, Sept. 11, head coach Mike LaFleur did not commit to Love's status for Week 1 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
"Still got another good day of work today to figure that out," LaFleur said. "But he's trending well."

CHISINAU, Moldova (AP) — A flight that was scheduled to carry Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy from Moldova to Norway earlier this week was delayed when authorities closed Moldova's airspace because of a drone incursion, a government spokesperson said.
Moldovan police said a Russian drone crashed on Tuesday in a sunflower field on the outskirts of a village in the district of Riscani, which caused four fires to break out but no injuries.
Government spokesperson Dumitru Ciorici said on Wednesday that Moldova had closed its airspace Tuesday afternoon to protect aircraft flying over the country at the time. The closure delayed three departures, including the flight carrying Zelenskyy.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre told broadcaster NRK that Zelenskyy's plane "was nearly hit by a drone as it took off from Moldova" on its way to Oslo for King Harald V's funeral. Zelenskyy arrived in Oslo on Tuesday and met Støre to discuss potential support for Ukraine's air defenses before attending the king's funeral on Wednesday.
Moldovan authorities confirmed the drone came down and exploded 160 kilometers (100 miles) from Chisinau International Airport. The airspace restrictions were lifted and Zelenskyy's plane took off later than scheduled.

China's crude oil imports rose for the second consecutive month in August as refiners turned to additional non-Middle Eastern supply and boosted overseas fuel shipments amid eased export restrictions.
China imported 37.93 million tons, or 8.93 million barrels per day (bpd) of crude oil in August, up by 6.2% compared to July, and further recovering from the decade-low seen in June, official Chinese customs data showed on Tuesday.
The August import level was still 23.4% lower compared to the same month last year, but it's a marked improvement from the June lows of just 7.1 million bpd.
China slashed its total crude oil imports to a decade low in June, culminating three months of very low import levels amid high prices and constrained supply from the Middle East.
Beijing, having amassed about 1.4 billion barrels of crude before the war, could afford to dramatically reduce its crude buying, slashing import volumes in June by an estimated 4.4 million bpd compared to the 2025 average.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration on Sunday renewed its appeal to the Supreme Court to allow new restrictions on mail ballots in time for the midterms.
The filing came after U.S. District Court Judge Indira Talwani extended an order against the Postal Service enforcing President Donald Trump's executive order for the November elections.
The legal wrangling is happening even as states start sending out mail ballots, leaving the administration little time to make big changes in mail ballot rules.
"Ballots have already begun to be mailed in North Carolina, and more States will begin the mailing process as the injunction remains in place — including Alabama on September 9 and at least five States the week of September 13," Solicitor General John Sauer said in the filing.
"Once those ballot envelopes enter the mailstream, there is no retrieving them. And while the injunction allows the Postal Service and the States to continue taking steps to ensure that their envelopes satisfy the Rule's requirements … each day the injunction is in place risks sowing confusion and chaos because the injunction makes those preparatory steps voluntary, rather than mandatory."

Pakistan's troubled England tour has taken another unexpected turn, with the Pakistan Cricket Board reportedly taking mobile phones belonging to members of the national team into its custody ahead of the third and final Test at Edgbaston.
According to Pakistani 365 News, the players' devices have been handed over to the PCB and will remain with the board until the conclusion of the final Test. The report did not reveal the identities of the players whose phones were taken, while the PCB has not publicly stated why the devices were placed in its custody.
The development has raised questions about the extent of the authorities' powers over players' personal devices, particularly regarding when phones can be seized, retained or accessed and what safeguards apply to private communications.
Mobile phones are already subject to strict restrictions in international cricket, particularly inside areas designated as restricted during matches.
Under the ICC's Player and Match Officials Area regulations, players and support staff are not permitted to possess or use mobile phones or other communication devices inside restricted areas, including dressing rooms, during an international match.
Players are expected to place their devices in secure storage before entering such areas. The primary purpose of these regulations is to protect the integrity of international matches and prevent unauthorised communication.

Cathie Wood appears to have made a sharp choice inside the same AI trade. ARK Invest's August 28 transaction disclosure showed sales of 156,286 shares of Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) and purchases of 243,707 shares of NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA). Based on the August 28 closing prices, the moves were worth an estimated $72.8 million and $53.0 million, respectively. ARK also bought Broadcom, making the message look less like a retreat from AI chips than a reordering of which suppliers offer the best risk-adjusted exposure.
The bull case for the switch is execution. NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) reported quarterly revenue of $96.2 billion, including $89 billion from its data-center business. Its scale, software ecosystem, and ability to sell complete systems give it a clearer path to monetizing every new cluster. Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) is growing rapidly from a smaller base, with second-quarter revenue up 50% and data-center revenue up 107%, but it still has to convert product momentum into durable share gains against a rival that sets much of the market's pace.
That does not make AMD the obvious loser. Its Instinct accelerators and EPYC server processors give customers a credible second source, while hyperscalers have strong incentives to prevent one vendor from controlling their economics. If AMD keeps improving its software and wins larger deployments, its smaller revenue base could produce more upside. Nvidia's strength also creates its own bear case: enormous expectations, customer concentration, export restrictions, and the risk that buyers increasingly favor custom silicon can punish even excellent results.
ARK's filing does not disclose its rationale. The same-day trade reduced AMD exposure and increased Nvidia exposure, but it does not mean AMD's thesis has broken. Hedge-fund holder counts rose for both names. At the end of Q2, 164 hedge funds owned AMD, up from 134 one quarter earlier, while Nvidia ownership rose to 285 funds from 275. Marshall Wace increased its AMD common-share position 3% to 3.9 million shares, and Fisher **** et Management raised its Nvidia stake 3% to 90.9 million shares.
AMD's reported short positioning was not exceptionally high. As of the August 14 settlement date, 40.1 million shares were sold short, equal to 2.47% of the float and 1.5 days of average trading volume. As LSU prepares for the upcoming season, it has ignited a firestorm throughout the SEC after it began securing commitments from former NFL players. While those players are technically barred from joining the team by NCAA and SEC rules, a Louisiana court ruling has opened up the possibility of those players joining the LSU roster. But that fight clearly is not over.
LSU and head coach Lane Kiffin have continued moving forward with plans to add at least three players who signed professional contracts this summer, including former Ole Miss players Dae'Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris at tight end and defensive tackle, respectively.
Bringing those players onto the roster would violate two separate league rules, with the SEC prohibiting players from joining the conference after signing a professional contract while also barring intraconference transfers outside of the designated portal window.

LONDON, Sept 1 (Reuters) - For the first time on record, Iran has gone about seven weeks without shipping meaningful crude exports through the Strait of Hormuz, as a U.S. naval blockade succeeds where years of sanctions failed by cutting off one of Tehran's main sources of foreign-currency earnings.
Unlike previous sanctions campaigns, when Iranian crude continued reaching buyers despite restrictions, the current blockade has stopped fresh crude cargoes reaching China, Tehran's only major remaining oil customer, increasing pressure on government finances and foreign-currency reserves.
Since the U.S. reinstated its blockade on Iran on July 14 as part of their six-month conflict, no Iranian crude cargoes have successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz to China, according to Kpler, Vortexa and TankerTrackers.com.
As a result, Iran can only sell crude to China from floating storage in Asia, which it cannot replenish as crude accumulates aboard tankers inside the strait.

South Africa continued their strong run in the Namibia T20I Tri-Series with another convincing victory over Zimbabwe, securing a comfortable 43-run win in the fourth match at the Namibia Cricket Ground on Tuesday.
Lhuan-dre Pretorius narrowly missed out on a maiden T20I century but produced a career-best 94 to set up South Africa's second victory over Zimbabwe in the tournament. The opener's sensational knock came off just 51 ******* and featured 12 fours and three sixes.
Pretorius was named Player of the Match after helping South Africa post 185/7 before their bowlers completed the job by dismissing Zimbabwe for 142 in 17.4 overs.

Crystal Palace supporter group Holmesdale Fanatics say they will "stop all organised activity" at Selhurst Park citing the sanitisation of football as key in their decision.
The group - founded in 2005 - play a significant part in generating the atmosphere and visual impacts such as flags and Tifos for Eagles fixtures.
In a lengthy statement explaining the move, the group said "genuine" fans are no longer prioritised by clubs.
They said: "Increasingly driven out by sky high ticket prices, needless restrictions that are designed to strip away the dignity of supporters, and relentless harassment and legal action, many young people are choosing to opt out of a game that seems determined to push them away."
Holmesdale Fanatics said it was "proud" for all that has been achieved but warned the "current setup is unsustainable" at Selhurst Park.
