Two years ago, it seemed like ******* ody wanted to touch Intel (NASDAQ: INTC). The company that basically invented the modern chip industry had turned into its own cautionary tale, posting an $18.8 billion net loss for 2024 while it fell behind Nvidia in artificial intelligence (AI) and behind Taiwan's foundries in manufacturing.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
Then something strange happened. The U.S. government bought a stake in Intel. So did Nvidia. So did SoftBank. Companies and governments don't usually hand over billions to a business they think is finished, and that's the real reason I think the next 14 months matter more for this stock than almost any stretch in Intel's recent history.
Turnarounds aren't real until a real, working product ships, and Intel is finally shipping. In July, the company said its newest Arizona fab had entered high-volume manufacturing on a subset of its Core Ultra Series 3 chips, known as Panther Lake, the first processor built on Intel 18A, which Intel calls the most advanced semiconductor process ever developed and manufactured in the United States. Its second-quarter 2026 release adds that the next node behind it, 18A-P, had already entered risk production, meaning Intel isn't just trying to catch up on one generation, it's trying to stay on pace for the one after. On the data center side, that same release says Intel also launched Xeon 6+, its first server chip built on 18A.
Money talks, and in 2025 three very different yet massive buyers said the same thing with their wallets. The U.S. government invested $8.9 billion in Intel common stock, structured largely out of unpaid CHIPS Act and Secure Enclave funding, in exchange for roughly 275 million shares and warrants for up to 241 million more. Nvidia added $5 billion, and SoftBank put in another $2 billion, both also in Intel common stock. None of this money really guarantees Panther Lake sells well, or that Intel's foundry business ever turns a real profit. But I think it's an odd thing to do if you think a company is circling the drain, and you don't have any faith in it.

With shares up by almost 700% over the last five years, Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR) has been one of the biggest winners on the software side of the generative artificial intelligence (AI) megatrend. It has rapidly incorporated the new technology into its business model, leading to skyrocketing revenue and earnings.
That said, Palantir's stock rally has slowed over the last 12 months, leaving investors wondering whether it can return to the explosive growth it enjoyed in previous years. Let's dig into the pros and cons of the stock to decide what it might be worth by the end of 2027.

Right now, AI-hungry investors are mostly limited to the infrastructure side of the opportunity. This is where hardware companies like Nvidia and Micron build the chips that data center providers use to run and train large language models (LLMs). However, many leading consumer-facing AI software leaders are still privately held, putting them out of reach.
Palantir convincingly bucks the trend. Its business involves sifting through vast amounts of its clients' internal data to help them identify actionable insights like business trends, opportunities, and fraud. Generative AI proved highly synergistic with these tools, enabling operators to access insights via natural language prompts rather than advanced interfaces. Demand has been explosive.

Buying a new car is getting harder just as Ford Motor's stock is having one of its best days of the year.
Ford (F) shares jumped 12.4% Thursday after the automaker delivered better-than-expected adjusted earnings and raised the bottom end of its annual profit outlook.
For shareholders, that was welcome news.
For someone walking into a dealership, Ford's results revealed a less comfortable trend.
From a previous forecast of around $2 billion, Ford now anticipates increased commodity expenses of nearly $2.5 billion this year. The cost of steel, copper, computer chips, gasoline, and transportation is all rising.

President Donald Trump has been in the White House for nearly six years, spanning two nonconsecutive terms. Over that time, the iconic Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES:^DJI), benchmark S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC), and growth-dependent Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) have delivered well-above-average annual returns, compared to most other presidents since the late 1890s.
One of the key catalysts powering Wall Street's bull market, the artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure build-out, was well underway before Trump's second term began. But make no mistake about it: Wall Street and investors have also benefited immensely from the president's Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (signed into law in December 2017), which lowered the peak marginal corporate income tax rate to 21% (the lowest rate since 1939), fueling record S&P 500 share buybacks.

Generating $1,000 a month in dividends is a simple process but it usually requires a substantial capital outlay. The Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF (NYSEMKT: SCHD) is perhaps the best dividend ETF for accomplishing this. Not only does it offer a much-above-average yield, but it's also backed by a portfolio of durable, high-quality companies.
That's exactly what you want in your portfolio, so let's run through the path for how to get there.

The Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF tracks the Dow Jones U.S. Dividend 100 Index. It starts with a universe of U.S. equities that have paid dividends for at least 10 consecutive years. From there, it examines the stock's dividend growth rate, yield, and several fundamental metrics, including return on equity (ROE) and cash flow-to-debt ratio. The 100 stocks with the best combination of these factors make the cut for the portfolio.
It's the combination of dividend yield and dividend quality that makes this fund so effective. The screens act as cross-checks on each other, so investors can get the best of both worlds. Choosing stocks based solely on yield can leave investors vulnerable to yield traps or potential dividend cuts. The quality screen here helps steer clear of that and gives people a sustainable high yield along with the quality portfolio.

The nest egg needed to support a comfortable retirement varies widely by state.
Couples receiving dividend income may need a smaller nest egg, but those payments can fluctuate and aren't guaranteed.
Monthly dividends totaling $500 to $2,000 can shrink the required invested nest egg by $150,000 to $600,000.
Building a stream of dividend income is a common retirement strategy, giving couples regular cash flow that can help cover expenses without requiring them to sell as much of their portfolio.
An Investopedia ****** ysis found that a typical American couple age 65 or older needs about $1.16 million saved for a comfortable retirement after accounting for roughly $37,700 a year in Social Security. Across the 50 states and Washington, D.C., that figure ranges from about $800,000 to nearly $1.33 million.

Replicating the average $2,071 monthly Social Security check requires roughly $991,000 invested across FDLO and VYMI, blending to a 2.5% yield.
At a 6% annual return, reaching $991,000 takes about $2,144 per month over 20 years, dropping to $1,682 at an 8% return.
Place FDLO in a Roth IRA for tax-free growth and VYMI in a taxable account to capture its foreign tax credit.

Feeling wealthy in retirement is often just that — a feeling. Having an active social life, a solid purpose and enough cash in the bank to never worry about monthly bills might be all you need to describe yourself as a "rich" retiree.
Feelings aside, what do the cold, hard numbers show? Most Americans agree you need at least $2.2 million (1) to be considered wealthy in America. But they might be surprised to see that you actually need considerably more than that to land in the top 10% of U.S. retirees.

Baby boomers turning 80 now number nearly 70 million, yet builders started only 1,000 new senior housing units last quarter.

Builders started only 1,000 units of new senior housing in the quarter. More 80-year-olds and very few new buildings push occupancy and rents higher, but operator health, labor costs, and government reimbursement decide how much of that reaches shareholders. Intel lost almost a third of its value on Friday. By the close, the Nasdaq Composite had sealed its worst month since March 2025, down 5.3%.
Tom Lee of Fundstrat, a Wall Street research firm, has another suspect. He thinks one big investor may have been forced to dump tech shares, leaving tech holders with the losses.
Speaking on CNBC as the Nasdaq slid on Friday, Lee said the market was fighting an "internal battle" and that the selling looked forced.
"Today looks like someone's getting liquidated. I don't know if it's an institution," he said.
By "liquidated," Lee means forced to sell. This happens when an investor buys shares with borrowed money and prices then fall. The lender wants its money back, so the investor has to sell at any price.

Winter is one factor in that comparison, but the rest of the picture gets mentioned less often: insurance, taxes, housing, and summers. This piece runs the numbers for a couple at full retirement age.

Florida homeowners pay $8,471 yearly for insurance versus $2,415 in Michigan, a $6,000 gap that requires $151,000 in extra savings.
Michigan exempts Social Security and offers married couples a $128,080 retirement deduction, potentially zeroing state tax on a $37,000 IRA withdrawal.

Bear markets are a normal part of investing in the stock market. **** ody knows when the next one will arrive, but it will eventually arrive with 100% certainty. The time to prepare is before you face the fear that comes with big market downturns. That's why you should consider owning companies like Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ), Medtronic (NYSE: MDT), Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO), and Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG).
But there are two pieces to the story here. First, they all operate in economically resilient industries. Second, they all have incredible dividend track records. Here's a quick look at each one.
Continue »
To be fair, you may not be happy about paying for healthcare, since it can be expensive. But you will still pay for it because, in the most extreme cases, it can be the difference between life and death. In less extreme cases, the difference is between a better and worse quality of life, and you'll still probably pay up. The risk of not paying simply isn't worth it.
Johnson & Johnson is a good choice if you are worried about a bear market and are looking for a safe-haven investment. It is a major player in both the pharmaceutical and medical device sectors, providing diversification. It is a Dividend King, having rewarded shareholders with more than 50 consecutive annual dividend increases. And while its yield isn't exactly huge at 2%, it is roughly twice what you'd collect from an S&P 500 index (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) fund. J&J isn't exactly an exciting company, but it is a reliable one.

Washington has a way of making the economy feel good. But Jamie Dimon wants Americans to look at what's fueling the high.
Speaking at the Economic Club of Chicago earlier this month, the CEO of JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM) compared government spending to a powerful drug — one that can boost corporate profits while setting the stage for a painful aftermath.
Jeff Bezos backs a platform that lets anyone invest in rental homes for as little as $100 — 6 ways to build wealth like a landlord without actually being one
A single line on your car insurance policy could be inflating your premium by up to 30% — here's what to change

Bloomberg calculated Dodge's roughly 15,897 Berkshire (BRK-A, BRK-B) shares would have topped $2.7 billion by 2013 if the family held them.
Homer Dodge drove 1,500 miles to hand a 25-year-old Buffett $120,000 in 1956, and the stake grew to $2.1 million by 1970.
The Avenir Foundation received 2,000 Berkshire shares from Dodge's estate and grew from $1 million to $1.2 billion in endowment by late 2024.
Just released. Our ****** ysts combed the entire stock market and named the ten best stocks to buy right now, and Berkshire Hathaway didn't make the cut. Enter your email to see the names that beat BRK-B. The report is free. Enter your email and see if any of your stocks made the cut.
In the summer of 1956, Homer Dodge, a physicist who built the University of Oklahoma's physics and astronomy department, pulled up to Warren Buffett's Omaha house with that canoe strapped to the roof of his car, according to biographer Alice Schroeder's account.

MANAMA, Bahrain - The looming possibility of U.S. strikes on Iran has been met with weary nervousness in the Persian Gulf, as Gulf officials double down on efforts to break through a U.S.-Iran impasse that they know will leave their region vulnerable.
Publicly and privately, leaders in Persian Gulf nations, which bore the brunt of Iranian retaliation because they are home to U.S. bases, are calling for de-escalation as concerns about President Donald Trump's war plans grow. Mediators from Qatar arrived in Tehran on Friday as part of the efforts to negotiate an end to the war, according to a person briefed on the talks, who described the trip as a "last-ditch effort to broker an interim deal between Iran and the U.S." that was happening "in coordination with the U.S."

Trump has seemed open to a deal - but also to resuming strikes, according to a separate official briefed on the talks, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation. Vice President JD Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and envoy, have been pushing for a deal, the official added, as others - including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth - appear opposed to it.
"The next two days will be crucial in determining how the situation unfolds," said an Iranian official, who like some others interviewed for this story spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation. The Americans, they added, are "seeking a positive breakthrough" ahead of the midterm elections.

In-N-Out Burger may be expanding to three Southern states, the company's CEO said this month in a sit-down interview shared on social media.
The chain may be headed to Arkansas, Mississippi and Oklahoma, CEO Lynsi Snyder said in an interview with actor Terry Crews that In-N-Out shared on Facebook on Oct. 22 and on its website.
Snyder said the move to Texas in 2011 felt "very right," and that other nearby states may be next.
"There's some other states … that could be on the way," she said. "If you look on the map, you've got Texas, there's Arkansas, Mississippi, Oklahoma. There's some states there that are possibilities."
She also hinted at the chain having a location in New Mexico.

The D.C. government and the commonwealth of Virginia sued Saturday to block construction of President Donald Trump’s planned triumphal arch, calling it a “flagrantly unlawful” project that will forever change the landscape of the nation’s capital.
The lawsuit is the latest attempt to stop the 250-foot-tall arch, which Trump hopes to build near Arlington National Cemetery and says will commemorate the nation’s 250th birthday. The administration would like to begin construction as soon as next week.
The two jurisdictions are asking a federal judge to halt the plan and argue that they have “indisputable standing” to bring their lawsuit because the towering arch would have tangible, negative effects on the region — an argument that distinguishes their lawsuit from others that have tried to stop Trump’s construction projects.
D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb (D) said the arch construction would cause “serious, immediate and irreparable harm to the District and its residents,” while Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones (D) said “Trump’s illegal vanity project” would be an affront to Arlington National Cemetery and the “extraordinary sacrifices it represents.”
“The Commonwealth has a solemn duty and a profound interest in preserving the dignity of this sacred place,” Jones said in a statement. “We will vigorously litigate to protect its sanctity and honor the legacy of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.”

About 42% of top-10% income families have seven-figure retirement accounts, compared with just 1% of middle-income families.
Married, college-educated homeowners make up about 20% of families but nearly 75% of retirement-account millionaires.
Nearly a third of retirement-account millionaires are families headed by someone ages 55 to 64.
Only about 7% of U.S. families have $1 million or more in retirement accounts. But that milestone is much more common among families that share several key traits.
Among the roughly 9.4 million families with $1 million or more in retirement accounts, about 97% own their homes, 84% are headed by someone with a bachelor's degree, and 61% are in the top 10% by income. That's according to an Investopedia ***** ysis of the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances, released earlier this month. All figures are in 2025 dollars.

ATLANTA, Oct 30 (Reuters) - US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira spoke briefly at a Group of 20 foreign ministers meeting and agreed to meet in coming weeks before a G20 leaders summit, a source familiar with the plans said.
A Brazilian official downplayed tensions over Brazil's failure to approve Trump's pick as ambassador and the re-election of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Vieira took part in the G20 meeting, which was hosted by Rubio in Atlanta. The two ministers agreed to meet again before G20 leaders meet in Miami in December.
The plan for the two to meet again, first reported by Bloomberg, reflects a desire by the two countries to move on after discord over the ambassador's visa and the US decision to grant a visa to Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro after his election loss to the leftist incumbent Lula.
"We're clearly not politicizing the issue, as we haven't in other situations regarding Brazilian citizens who have fled to the US," the Brazilian official said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says Georgia GOP Senate candidate Mike Collins can call him whenever he wants to ask for help for his state. But if Georgia reelects Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff, Trump says it could be another story.
"There's a big difference between that and Pee-wee Herman calling," Trump said last week in Perry, Georgia, using his derisive nickname for Ossoff. The president acted out a hypothetical scenario at his rally where Ossoff called to ask for money for his state, with Trump responding, "I don't give a **** what he wants."
It's been a recurring theme at Trump's rallies this month: From North Carolina to Ohio to Kansas, the president has dangled the idea that his administration would be far less likely to help states where Democrats win in the upcoming midterm elections.
Trump has sandwiched the threats into rallies where he has announced goodies like new semiconductor investments, a submarine repair center and fewer limits on a certain type of diesel, underscoring to the audience the types of tangibles an all-Republican Washington could continue to deliver for voters should his party remain in power after November.
But the president's utterances — part of a larger political strategy that's anchored on making the midterms about himself and activating conservative voters — have also injected politics into processes that have traditionally remained apolitical, such as doling out disaster aid and providing benefits for veterans.

Charlie Munger spent half a century lecturing investors on the psychology of their own mistakes. A month before he died, he admitted to one of the most common mistakes. Asked on the Acquired podcast how his investment in Hyundai had worked out, Munger said: "I lost money. Not much because I was stubborn. I held out until it got back to almost where I paid for it and then I sold it."
That sentence describes, almost word for word, the behavior behavioral economists call the disposition effect: the tendency to sell winners too early and hold losers too long, waiting for a stock to return to what you paid before letting it go. Hersh Shefrin and Meir Statman named it in 1985, and Terrance Odean documented it across thousands of retail brokerage accounts in a 1998 Journal of Finance paper. It is the mistake Munger's famous 1995 talk on the psychology of human misjudgment was written to help people avoid. Here he was, at 99, saying he had made it with his own money.
