"He knows his role in the team. Serhou Guirassy is our number one striker. He is the challenger." With these clear words, Niko Kovač made it plain at the press conference ahead of the season opener against Hamburger SV who is in charge in Dortmund's attack. But in football, two weeks can feel like an eternity. By now, the black-and-yellow world looks very different.
Because Fabio Silva has now become so important that he could even prompt a system change at Dortmund. Guirassy himself also raved about his competitor. "Fabio Silva and I really enjoy playing together and we have a lot of fun in training. He is a great player," he said after the Champions League win against Villarreal to the microphone of 'Amazon Prime'.
You can see what else the two say about each other here in the video.
Coach Kovač was also full of praise after the win against the Spaniards. Fabio Silva repeatedly worked his way into clear-cut chances and rewarded himself for his effort. "You can see that we can play this system with two strikers just as well as with one striker. If we now add Fabio (Silva, editor's note) alongside Serhou (Guirassy, editor's note) too - and we will - then we really have something special," said the BVB coach happily.
Few would probably have expected the Portuguese forward to be receiving this kind of praise right now. In the summer, there were rumors about a transfer because Silva had only rarely been able to meet expectations. According to 'Sky', the Bundesliga club would have been open to talks starting at a fee of 20 million euros. Both a loan and a sale were reportedly considered.

Hamburger SV head coach Merlin Polzin offered no excuses after his heavily rebuilt side suffered a horrendous 0-5 home defeat to Mainz 05 on Sunday afternoon.
Hamburg entered their first home Bundesliga fixture of the season looking to respond to their 2-0 opening-day defeat away at Borussia Dortmund. Instead, the afternoon developed into one of the club's worst top-flight home performances in decades.
Sunday's defeat also leaves Polzin's side without either a point or a goal after two league fixtures.
"The result speaks for itself," Polzin remarked in his opening press-conference statement. "It was a totally **** afternoon for us. It was a thoroughly deserved loss. There's no need to sugarcoat anything or attempt to explain anything so soon after the game when the emotions are still running high."
The scale of the defeat proved particularly striking given how aggressively Hamburg strengthened their squad during the closing stages of the summer transfer window. The club entered the season with several unresolved personnel questions, many of which were examined in GGFN's 2026/27 tactical preview of Hamburg.

Hamburger SV's lacklustre start to the new Bundesliga season continued this afternoon on home soil. In the Hanseatic sun, an FSV Mainz 05 side inspired by the brilliance of Sheraldo Becker and Phillip Tietz ran out comfortable winners on a 5-0 scoreline.
Similar to their opening day struggles in Dortmund, the hosts seemed to struggle as Mainz piled on the pressure. Sheraldo Becker stung the palms of Daniel Heuer Fernandes, before Nadiem Amiri fired wide on the end of a neat set-piece routine inside 15 minutes.
The warning signs were clear and HSV took no heed of it as an atmospheric Volksparkstadion fell momentarily silent. A misplaced pass from skipper Nicolai Remberg was picked off by Kaishu Sano. From there, he played in Becker who dispatched from a one-on-one scenario.
Aside from the occasional threat of Albert Grønbaek, HSV failed to even test debutante Alexander Schwolow before the break. Mainz swiftly led 2-0 when Nadiem Amiri pulled the strings in midfield for Becker to find **** e and deliver a routine tap-in for Philipp Mwene.
Half-time whistles from supporters forced Merlin Polzin's hand at the break. Torunarigha, Nadir and Adeline departed for Shafiq Nandja, Patson Daka and Fábio Vieira. The latter receiving a massive cheer since returning on a permanent basis from **** nal.

The draw for the second round of the 2026/27 DFB-Pokal took place at the German Football Museum in Dortmund on Saturday evening, producing four ties between Bundesliga clubs and an intriguing reunion between defending champions Bayern Munich and 1. FC Magdeburg.

Hamburger SV continue to pursue the signing of KRC Genk right-back Zakaria El Ouahdi as sporting director Claus Costa seeks to resolve one of the squad's most obvious remaining deficiencies before the transfer deadline. According to the Hamburger Abendblatt, HSV have already reached a basic agreement with the 24-year-old Moroccan international.
Belgian transfer reporter Sacha Tavolieri reports that the Bundesliga club are now preparing a third offer for Genk after their first two approaches failed to produce an agreement. El Ouahdi himself reportedly favors the move. Kicker identifies the defender as Hamburg's preferred solution and reports that a deal could cost approximately €13m plus bonuses.
The Morocco international offers substantial attacking production from the right flank. El Ouahdi registered eight goals and five **** ists in 34 league appearances last season, adding another four goals across nine Europa League outings. His potential arrival would also address a weakness that Get German Football News' 2026/27 Hamburger SV tactical preview identified as one of the club's principal unresolved personnel issues.
Following the departures of William Mikelbrencis and Giorgi Gocholeishvili, Bakery Jatta currently stands as the only established option for Merlin Polzin on the right wing-back position. HSV have consequently been seeking a player capable of moving ahead of Jatta in the hierarchy.
Bayer Leverkusen full-back Arthur remains the alternative should HSV decide that El Ouahdi's overall package is too expensive. Florian Plettenberg previously reported that Hamburg had reached a basic verbal agreement with the 23-year-old Brazilian over a season-long loan without a purchase option. GGFN covered Arthur's potential departure as part of Leverkusen's extensive late-window restructuring. Die Werkself are themselves attempting to sign Strasbourg right-back Guéla Doué and are prepared to sanction Arthur's temporary departure.

Wendy's chief executive Bob Wright outlined a five-point turnaround strategy on Monday, saying the burger chain sacrificed ingredient quality for cost savings and became too dependent on discounts — factors he said contributed to Wendy's losing its long-held position as the country's second-largest burger chain by U.S. sales.
Wright told The Wall Street Journal that Burger King seized that position by overhauling its Whopper sandwich and modernizing its restaurant fleet. "We have made some decisions around quality that were rooted in efficiency and cost savings," Wright said. "We have let our value equation erode."
Wright, 58, took the helm as permanent president and CEO in May. His turnaround plan covers five areas: food quality and value, operations, store upgrades, marketing, and digital sales. Wright said a comprehensive menu overhaul is needed, working from individual ingredients through finished items and across every major category, including hamburgers, chicken, salads, and the Frosty-anchored dessert lineup.
As part of the leadership overhaul, Wright said Tariq Hassan, a former McDonald's executive, has joined Wendy's in the newly created role of chief marketing and customer growth officer. The current head of U.S. marketing is set to leave the company within weeks. Wright noted that the chain's marketing spending amounts to hundreds of millions of dollars annually, and said both the creative messaging and the way that money is placed across media channels require a rethink.
On the question of store count, Wright acknowledged that net unit losses have accumulated over the last year, with more closures anticipated, and framed those shutdowns as a deliberate mechanism for helping individual franchisees bring greater financial health to their restaurant holdings.

A move back to Germany looks to be on the cards for former VfL Wolfsburg and 1. FC Köln centre-back Sebastiaan Bornauw.
According to Sky Germany, Hamburger SV are in advanced talks with Leeds United over a deal to sign the 27-year-old defender.
The Bundesliga outfit are hoping to bring Bornauw in on loan with an option to buy.
With Leeds having agreed a deal to sign another centre-back in Nico Elvedi from Borussia Mönchengladbach, the path is now clear for Bornauw to make the switch to HSV.
Leeds reportedly paid €6 million to sign Bornauw from VfL Wolfsburg in the summer of 2025. The Belgian defender made 17 appearances in his first season with the English club.

Hamburger SV are preparing to cash in on academy product Fabio Baldé as the Bundesliga club continue a substantial overhaul of the attacking group that helped secure promotion little more than a year ago. According to Sport Bild, Baldé is closing in on a permanent move to Ligue 1 side Racing Strasbourg and travelled to France on Wednesday to complete the final stages of the transfer.
The 21-year-old could generate a fee worth more than €7m for HSV, with additional bonus payments potentially increasing the final package. The deal would constitute a highly significant piece of transfer business for a player who entered the summer outside Merlin Polzin's projected starting XI.
Baldé made only 16 Bundesliga appearances last season, starting three and registering one goal and one ****** ist across 440 minutes. Persistent fitness problems also prevented him from featuring in a single preseason friendly this summer.
Baldé's expected departure comes at the same time as HSV prepare to move on from another winger closely ****** ociated with the club's return to the Bundesliga. Jean-Luc Dompé has been informed that he should seek a new club and was left out of HSV's training camp squad. The circumstances surrounding the two departures differ considerably.
Baldé remains a young academy product whose potential could Hamburg to generate a substantial transfer fee despite his limited Bundesliga role. Dompé, by contrast, was one of the most important attacking figures during HSV's promotion push and leaves after four years, 113 competitive appearances, 18 goals and 33 ****** ists.

Christian Norgaard is set to complete a transfer to Everton imminently, holding a medical with his potential new club today ahead of a £7m move. But Norgaard is unlikely to be the last ******* nal player to depart this summer, with at least a few more on the transfer list.
James McNicholas reports for The Athletic that Fabio Vieira, Reiss Nelson, and Gabriel Jesus all remain avaiable for transfer this summer, should an appropriate buyer be found.

Previous reports have suggested that Vieira would ideally like to return to Hamburger SV, where he spent last season on loan. But the German club remain at least €10m apart from ******* nal in their valuation of the midfielder, making that deal unlikely as things stand.

Hamburg have officially confirmed the signing of Zambia striker Patson Daka. Multiple sources report that another addition is set to be unveiled shortly. Moroccan midfielder Bilal Nadir will also join the Bundesliga outfit on free transfer. Kicker, Sport Bild, and the Hamburger Morgenpost all confirm that a deal to acquire Nadir is effetely done. Nadir arrives from French first division side Olympique Marseille.
Nadir – an €8m-valuced player- is said to have a profile similar to that of departed leading goalscorer Fabio Vieira. The fact that the 22-year-old is nevertheless limited to a more centralized role nevertheless means that he is not intended to serve as a direct replacement for the departed Portuguese international. Kicker reports that Hamburg remain committed to signing Vieira permanently.
“In signing Patson, we’ve specifically strengthened ourselves at the center-forward position,” newly appointed HSV Board Member for Sport Kathleen Krüger noted in a club statement. “With him, we’re gaining a center forward who meets our expectations quite clearly.”
“Patson brings many qualities that are essential to our style of play,” HSV sporting director Claus Costa added. “He combines energy, speed, and deep runs of the highest intensity.”
“I’m happy to be here now and can’t wait to get started,” the player himself said. “I’m a passionate and energetic player whose job is to score goals. I think that’s exactly how I can help the team.”

Hamburger SV have completed the signing of 27-year-old Zambian forward Patson Daka.
The striker joins the Bundesliga club on a free transfer after his contract with Leicester City expired at the end of last season.
“With Patson, we have brought in exactly the kind of centre-forward we were looking for. He works extremely hard both in and out of possession and is a team player who always puts the side first,” said HSV board member for sport Kathleen Krüger.
“He also brings plenty of experience at international level to the table. We’re convinced that Patson has the qualities to make an immediate difference for us and are delighted to welcome him to HSV.”
Daka is excited to begin a new chapter with Die Rothosen and believes he has the qualities to make a difference for the team.

Arijon Ibrahimović is set to sign a new contract with Bayern Munich, according to reports from Transfermarkt. The 20-year-old attacking midfielder is expected to put pen to paper next week after deciding to continue his development at the German champions.
The report states that Ibrahimović's current deal, which runs until 2027 with an option for a further year, will be replaced by a new contract running until 2028.
The decision comes despite significant interest in the Germany Under-21 international following his productive loan spell at Heidenheim. Clubs including Werder Bremen, Hamburger SV, Freiburg, Augsburg, Villarreal, Brighton & Hove Albion and Hull City were all reportedly monitoring his situation.
According to Transfermarkt, the decisive factor was a series of positive and trusting conversations with Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany. The Belgian is said to have outlined a clear sporting perspective for Ibrahimović, convincing the youngster that his future lies in Munich.
Ibrahimović also strengthened his case during the closing weeks of last season. His standout display against Bayern in Heidenheim's dramatic 3-3 draw at the Allianz Arena, where he registered a goal contribution, reportedly reinforced the club's desire to keep him. He followed that performance with another two goal contributions against Köln a week later.

The NBA Draft has now come and gone with two Purdue players having their names called and two others singing with summer league opportunities after. That puts four new Purdue players with NBA opportunities. You'd always rather be drafted than signing as an undrafted free agent, so it makes sense that both Braden Smith and Trey Kaufman-Renn would seem to be the obvious choices here, but maybe you disagree with me. This week, with the holiday coming up it's a short week and that means just the one question. So this week, take the time to answer who you think will have the best NBA career before loading up on hot dogs, hamburgers, and finding your seat for the fireworks. After emerging as one of the Bundesliga's biggest revelations last season, former Hamburger SV loanee and current Tottenham player Luka Vušković is attracting serious interest from another Premier League club.
Brighton & Hove Albion have reportedly upped their first bid worth around €35 million for the highly-rated Croatian defender, whose performances in Hamburg have turned him into one of Europe's most sought-after young centre-backs.
The 19-year-old Croatian international is reportedly impressed by Brighton head coach Fabian Hürzeler and the club's track record of developing young talent. Reports in Germany and England suggest the player has already reached a verbal agreement with Brighton, but Tottenham remain reluctant to sanction a transfer.
The negotiations between Brighton and Tottenham are ongoing - it remains to be seen if the improved offer will be enough to get Vušković in.

Over the years, the legend of Luka Vuskovic has grown and grown. His prodigious leap and a physique well beyond his age, combined with two successful loan spells, have only added to the hype. Three years on from his £12m signing, many are ready to kneel before Luka and name him the solution to all our defensive issues without ever having seen him play in the flesh.
Last night in Dallas, Luka had an opportunity to add to that reputation and prove that he is ready, but a chastening opening-game defeat at the hands of players he will be expected to face week in, week out did not go to plan. The legend took a serious hit.
Luka's rise to becoming a major talking point is down to a breakout season in Germany with Hamburger SV. The Croatian took the opportunity with both hands. He finished the season as the top-scoring defender and was named in the 2025-26 Team of the Season.
His success coincided with another disappointing season at N17. As we battled relegation with centre-backs who looked uninterested in the fight, over in Europe Luka was crashing through opposition strikers as though they were made of paper.
His strong performances propelled him into the media limelight, the Croatian national team and the consciousness of every Spurs fan. Suddenly, Luka was viewed as an option, no longer a protégé.
