Philips had the kind of quarter that sounds great until you read past the headline. Sales up, margins up, cash flow guidance up. Then you notice the margin beat is wearing a costume: a U.S. tariff refund, not better medicine.
Philips posted second-quarter sales of €4.4 billion (about $5 billion), up 4% on a comparable basis. Adjusted EBITA margin jumped to 16.4%, but a €186 million US tariff refund did most of the actual lifting, worth 4.2 percentage points out of €609 million in operating income. Take that refund away and underlying margin actually slipped.
Orders told a rougher story: comparable intake fell 1%, dragged down by several big Connected Care contracts in North America that simply slid into next quarter. Europe, meanwhile, posted strong double-digit order growth, no asterisk required. All three divisions still grew, Diagnosis & Treatment up 2%, Connected Care up 2%, Personal Health up a genuinely solid 8%.
Management left full-year sales guidance untouched at 3-4.5%, but raised margin guidance to 13.5-14% and lifted free cash flow guidance to €1.5-1.7 billion, all while quietly excluding the still-unresolved Respironics legal mess, including active US investigations. Shares fell anyway. Investors did the math on the refund themselves.

There's a new look for the next Winter Games, coming to the French Alps in 2030.
A pair of abstract images said to draw inspiration from "a mountain revealed by light" will serve as emblems for the 2030 Winter Games, set to be held in multiple locations throughout France and even the Netherlands.
The mountain-like image, filled in with bright blue stripes tinged with reds for the Olympics, is reversed for the Paralympics that follow for athletes with disabilities. Both "Alpes 2030″ emblems use the French name for the country's portion of Europe's iconic peaks.
"The same mountain will unite the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2030," said Edgar Grospiron, president of the French Alps organizing committee, calling the two emblems "complementary expressions of the same vision."
It was nearly 29 years ago that organizers of Utah's first Olympics rolled out their logo for the 2002 Winter Games, a stylized gold, orange and purple snowflake embodying snow-capped mountains, crossed skis and a high desert sunset.

Gerald Ford's Comfort Meal Always Started With Pot Roast And Ended With This Dessert

We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.
Gerald Ford was, as far as United States presidents go, a bit of a fluke. The only president not to be elected to the office, the Michigan representative came to office after the resignation of both President Richard Nixon and Vice President Spiro Agnew following the Watergate scandal of the early 1970s. His presidency was marked by two ***** assination attempts, several falls, and a struggling economy. All of this must have been stressful for the a
