US stocks surged on Thursday as optimistic comments from Federal Reserve governor Christopher Waller that pricing pressures showed signs of improving led traders to pare back rate-hike expectations.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) climbed 1.3%, and the S&P 500 (^GSPC) rose 1%. Both indexes posted their best day since Aug 4.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) jumped about 1.4% as the yield on 10-year Treasurys (^TNX) eased to 4.74%.
Nvidia (NVDA) stock rose 1% after the AI leader announced it would acquire open-weight AI platform Hugging Face for roughly $13 billion in a deal that's expected to close in 2027.
Stocks gained momentum after the Fed's Waller said he saw promising signs of "disinflation," suggesting he may vote to keep interest rates unchanged at the next Fed meeting. That led bond traders to rapidly scale back their bets that the Fed will raise rates in September to a tossup, from a 63% chance the day before.

WASHINGTON, Sept 3 (Reuters) - Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller said on Thursday he is leaning toward keeping interest rates steady at the U.S. central bank's policy meeting this month if the next batch of inflation data shows price pressures are continuing to moderate.
Pointing to the importance of "what we learn" about inflation data for August, Waller told a Reuters NEXT Newsmaker event in Washington that "if there is continued progress toward our 2% goal, then I am willing to support holding the policy rate at its current level."
"I'm going to paraphrase John Lennon here. Give disinflation a chance" and refrain from prematurely raising rates to allow a cooling process to play out, Waller said. In terms of that patience, "I'm not going to say let's wait until next year, but let's just wait and see if we get some improvement on this."
Waller, however, said the data could also move in a way that would lead him to argue that the Fed needs to take action to control price pressures at its September 15-16 policy meeting.

Eagle Capital Management, an investment management company, released its second quarter 2026 investor letter. A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. In the quarter, Eagle Capital Management discussed how enthusiasm around AI capital spending has driven strong S&P 500 earnings growth while also increasing risks from elevated valuations, concentrated demand, and aggressive investment ******* umptions. Eagle remains a strong believer in AI but prefers constructing a portfolio that can perform across multiple outcomes rather than relying on one forecast. The firm believes current earnings can overstate underlying economics because semiconductor equipment is depreciated over several years, while free cash flow growth remains much weaker. It also expects competition and additional capacity across AI labs, hyperscalers, and semiconductors to eventually create winners and losers. These dynamics are encouraging Eagle to recycle capital toward attractive opportunities outside the most crowded AI trades while maintaining selective exposure to high quality beneficiaries. The portfolio trades at a 20% market discount with faster expected EPS growth. Please review the Strategy's top five holdings for key selections.

The U.S. economy may not be as divided as the popular "K-shaped" narrative suggests. Economist Ed Yardeni says a generational divide better explains why consumer spending has remained resilient.
Yardeni, a longtime Wall Street economist and founder of Yardeni Research, calls this the "G-shaped economy." In an Aug. 3 research note, he argued that older Americans have accumulated far more wealth than younger generations, while financial support from older households is helping younger Americans cope with affordability pressures.
The K-shaped economy describes a widening gap between higher- and lower-income Americans, with the two groups experiencing different trends in income, spending and wealth. Recent debate has focused on whether that divide is still widening or beginning to narrow.

New York Federal Reserve President John Williams signaled Wednesday that he is open to raising interest rates at the Federal Open Market Committee's September 15-16 meeting, a shift from his previous stance favoring a hold on rates.
"There's no clear signs right now whether monetary policy currently is sufficient to make sure we bring inflation back to target in the next year or two, or whether you need to see further action to do that," Williams said in a "Squawk Box" appearance on CNBC, speaking with anchor Steve Liesman from the New York Fed's headquarters. He added that recent inflation data had been "encouraging" but that policymakers needed to consider a fuller picture of incoming information. He rounded out the thought by saying, "We've got to get a full picture and look at all the different pieces of information we have."
Williams, who holds a permanent seat on the FOMC, had until recently been among the Fed's most vocal defenders of keeping rates steady, according to MarketWatch. His comments Wednesday represented a notable shift in tone ahead of what markets consider a pivotal policy decision.
Williams also addressed the recent rise in Treasury yields, attributing it to economic strength rather than market dysfunction. "What's driving it, in large part, is really a strong U.S. economy and a strong economic outlook fueled by big investments in AI and data centers and technology in general," he said. He described inflation expectations as "well anchored" despite price pressures tied to tariffs and the Iran war.
Markets were pricing in roughly a two-in-three chance of a rate hike at the September meeting as of Wednesday morning, per CME Group figures cited by CNBC.

Daktronics delivered a strong fiscal Q1: Revenue rose 7.1% year over year, operating income increased 7.2% to $24.9 million, and EPS climbed 21.2% to $0.40, the company's highest quarterly EPS in three years. Gross margin expanded 80 basis points to 30.5%.

On September 1, Helios Technologies (NYSE:HLIO) announced that its Electronics segment had expanded the No Roads platform with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, bringing familiar smartphone integration to boats, ATVs, and off-road rigs that never touch pavement. The announcement landed three weeks after Helios posted a second quarter in which that same Electronics segment expanded gross margin by more than 500 basis points, and it came alongside a raised full-year outlook. For a company known for hydraulic cylinders and industrial controls, chasing smartphone connectivity is a notable shift in emphasis.
No Roads was built jointly by Enovation Controls and i3 Product Development, pairing hardware built for rugged, integrated displays with i3's software and connected-product design work. Billy Aldridge, President of Electronics for Helios, described the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto rollout as a foundation for future connected capabilities rather than a standalone feature, and pointed to powersports, marine, overlanding, and specialty-vehicle OEMs as customers who now have a reason to look at Helios displays.
CEO Sean Bagan tied the move to a broader pattern of combining the company's operating units to build differentiated products, extending value to existing customers while pursuing new business in adjacent markets. The segment's own numbers back up that framing. Electronics sales climbed 19% in the second quarter of 2026 to $85.5 million, while gross margin expanded 530 basis points to 34.6%, pushing operating income up 90% to $11.2 million. That kind of margin expansion tends to show up when a business shifts from generic hardware toward harder-to-copy, differentiated products, which is exactly the case Helios is building for No Roads.
The company backed that story up at the corporate level too, raising its full-year 2026 sales outlook to $880 million to $900 million, up from a prior range of $840 million to $870 million, while cutting net debt to 1.4 times adjusted EBITDA from 2.6 times a year earlier.
Helios has not disclosed what No Roads, or the CarPlay and Android Auto features specifically, contribute to revenue, so the financial case for this rollout rests on management's framing rather than a number investors can independently verify. CFO Jeremy Evans tempered the company's own optimism when he flagged tougher year-over-year comparisons in the second half, along with geopolitical uncertainty, tariff dynamics, and broader inflationary pressures as ongoing headwinds.

The letter notes a reversal in U.S. equities, driven by AI spending and strong earnings, despite cautious sentiment among lower-income households. The focus on high-quality firms with durable advantages is expected to yield positive outcomes as valuation pressures mount, indicating that future market performance may hinge on fundamentals rather than speculative trends. The portfolio aims to capitalize on the overlooked valuations of quality companies, presenting significant investment opportunities. "Equitable Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:EQH) triggered our soft stop-loss review, and with no insider buying to reinforce conviction, we sold the position. While Equitable continues to generate strong cash flow and return capital in a disciplined manner, the underlying core business has remained inconsistent. Earnings quality is uneven, flows are mixed, and ongoing pressure in the individual life and retirement segments raises concern. The Chiefs have nothing left to prove in the Andy Reid/Patrick Mahomes era. One could certainly pick apart the roster decisions of the past few years as being the reason the team stopped short of becoming a perennially dominant Pats-esque dynasty, but it's also unclear if that kind of lofty success is possible for any team in a modern NFL landscape where rookies are more pro-ready than ever before, and swelling salaries have made it very difficult to keep multi-superstar teams together.
This 2026 season feels like a new chapter for the Chiefs, while also the continuation of the same book they've been writing. It's the 15-page mini-chapter that ties up the story with a bow, and hopefully for the Chiefs faithful, has a happy ending.
Nobody is saying that Reid should retire after this season, but the stage is certainly set if he wants to go in that direction. For 14 years he's been the architect of one of the league's best teams, not simply in terms of the players on his roster, but in the staff he's ***** embled around him. Year in, year out, Reid displays an unnatural ability to put people in the right place at the right time — and it's this element of timing which makes it only right to ponder whether or not this is a pivot point for the Chiefs to make a switch.
A lot of this begins not with Patrick Mahomes, but Travis Kelce. A Hall of Fame lock, Kelce has achieved everything he could ever need to in the sport. Now there's undoubtably a personal aspect weighing on his future decision, with Kelce needing to decide whether or not he wants to suit up again after the 2026 season, or if he wants to take a step back and enjoy life with his wife. Kelce married Taylor Swift this past summer, maybe you heard about it? Not a lot of people really paid attention.
From a football perspective, Kelce can still go, but it's clear from watching him that the game is just more difficult for him now. The numbers are still there, but playing in the NFL no longer seems as effortless as it was for Kelce during his seven-season streak of 1,000-yard-plus receiving years. The veteran is slower in and out of his breaks, he doesn't stretch the field quite like he used to, and if you talk to legendary athletes, that's what often pressures them to hang it up. It's not good enough for the greats to simply succeed, rather the realization that succeeding is now a struggle that pains them. Doubt begins to creep in, and the critical confidence required to dominate on the field is slowly replaced with doubt. That feeling sucks, and many athletes choose to escape it as a result.

Kaiser Aluminum Corporation (NASDAQ:KALU) has pulled back sharply from its recent highs, but UBS sees the weakness as a buying opportunity. On August 31, UBS upgraded Kaiser Aluminum from Neutral to Buy and raised its price target to $184 from $179. ******* yst Alex Stansbury argued that the selloff has created an attractive entry point into a business with improving earnings power.
UBS's upgrade to Buy from Neutral is based on the view that Kaiser Aluminum Corporation (NASDAQ:KALU)'s recent pullback has created an attractive entry point rather than signaling a deterioration in the company's long-term earnings outlook. ******* yst Alex Stansbury raised the price target to $184 from $179, arguing that the selloff has created an opportunity to buy a business with improving earnings power.
The most important part of UBS's argument is that several of the pressures weighing on Kaiser's shares appear temporary. Stansbury specifically pointed to scrap as a meaningful tailwind while also saying that the company's underlying fundamentals are strengthening. That is important because UBS is not relying solely on higher aluminum prices to support its bullish view. Instead, the bank sees operational improvements and stronger end-market demand contributing to earnings growth.
UBS also highlighted the benefits of Kaiser's investments at Warrick and Trentwood. Those investments are increasingly relevant to the earnings story. Kaiser says its Warrick investment is designed to increase capacity for higher-margin coated packaging products, while its Trentwood modernization has focused on improving efficiency, capacity and the quality of products serving aerospace and general engineering customers.
The aerospace recovery is another key part of UBS's thesis. Stansbury pointed to the end of aerospace destocking and accelerating build rates, suggesting that an important headwind for Kaiser is beginning to reverse. That view is supported by Kaiser's latest results: the company said aerospace demand was strengthening as destocking eased, while second-quarter aerospace shipments increased year over year.

As parents continue to feel pressures on their household budgets, increasingly skipping specialty clothing stores in favor of one-stop shopping at big-box giants like Target and Walmart, another children's apparel retailer is closing stores.
Industry data confirms this shift, revealing that mass merchants now capture 80% of planned spending in the back-to-school category, according to Deloitte.
This shift in consumer spending habits, paired with the shrinking malls data, including projection from Capital One Shopping suggesting that up to 87% of traditional shopping malls could close over the next decade, has forced a number of mall clothing retailers to shut a number of underperforming locations.
A mall staple The Children's Place has shuttered hundreds of locations in recent years as part of a major restructuring plan to shed costly real estate, and legacy specialty chain, Carter's, has started its wave of planned closures in 2025.
Founded in 1865, Carter's grew from a modest Massachusetts knitting mill into North America's largest children's clothing maker by continually expanding its footprint and acquiring legacy brands like OshKosh B'gosh.

Founded in 1865, Carter's grew from a modest Massachusetts knitting mill into North America's largest children's clothing maker by continually expanding its footprint and acquiring legacy brands like OshKosh B'gosh.

The recent recovery across digital ****** ets could have further room to run, according to Needham & Company, which has increased its crypto trading volume forecasts for the exchanges and platforms covered by the firm.
"How sustainable is the crypto rebound? We believe it has legs," ****** yst John Todaro wrote in a note to clients, identifying three factors supporting the firm's ****** sment.
The first factor is a potential rotation in investor attention and capital. Needham said artificial intelligence stocks, which previously attracted significant retail participation, have cooled as regulatory pressures increase ahead of the midterm elections.
Retail trading activity in commodities, including oil and metals, has also moderated.
Against that backdrop, Needham believes digital ****** ets could become relatively more attractive to investors again as competing speculative trades lose some of their momentum.

The Indianapolis Colts' initial 53-man roster is set, and it came with a pair of surprise additions.
Making the Colts' roster were linebacker Tahj Chambers and defensive tackle Tim Smith -- two players we did not hear a lot about this summer.
Chambers signed with the Colts after the 2026 NFL draft as a UDFA. He played 38 defensive snaps in the preseason, holding up well in the run game, but his impact during the regular season will likely come on special teams.
Smith, meanwhile, was a sixth-round pick by the Colts in 2025. He spent last season on the practice squad, where he was elevated for one game in Week 10, but did not play any snaps.
He finished the preseason with three pressures and eight run stops, according to PFF.

And so it begins. Ahead of roster cutdown day on Sunday, the Jacksonville Jaguars have reportedly released their first player.
According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the team is waiving linebacker Amari Burney.
Burney was a late addition to the Jaguars' training camp roster, joining the team on Aug. 11 to help bolster the linebacker position, a unit that was navigating injuries.
Burney appeared in all three preseason games for the Jaguars, playing 81 defensive snaps. He logged three quarterback pressures, a sack, and made 10 total tackles. He also recorded a pass breakup, according to PFF.
Burney, 26, was a sixth-round pick by Las Vegas in the 2023 NFL draft. He appeared in seven games as a rookie and then in 17 games during the 2024 season. He did not see the field in 2025 after spending part of that offseason with Tennessee.

One of Texas A&M coach Mike Elko's main objectives this offseason was finding a replacement for unanimous All-American Edge Cashius Howell, who finished his final season in College Station on the highest of highs, leading the SEC in sacks (11.5) combined with 41 pressures, while is short arms were the only reason he was selected in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, going early in Round 2 to the Cincinnati Bengals.
Before utilizing the transfer portal, Elko and new defensive coordinator Lyle Hemphill knew that rising sophomore Edge Marco Jones was on track to replace most of Howell's snaps in 2026, but in order for the former blue-chip prospect to reach his full potential, landing a proven Edge from the portal with the size, length, and pass-rush potential was the goal.
Thanks to Mike Elko's development track record after six defensive linemen were selected in the last two drafts, Northwestern transfer Edge Anto Saka chose the Aggies over several blue-blood programs, as the two-time selection on Bruce Feldman's annual "Freaks List," standing 6'4" and 255 pounds, and is slated to start as Mike Elko's big defensive end this season.
After 16 preseason practices, an anonymous source described Saka as a "grown man" expected to add "another layer to the Aggies' pass rush," while his background as a reliable run defender is equally important given A&M's run defense issues late last season.
On Thursday, Mike Elko continued to praise Saka's professionalism and work ethic, which, combined with senior defensive end T.J. Searcy, is slated to pick up where Cashius Howell left off this fall.
