Rayo Vallecano reduced the deficit in the 51st minute when Sergio Camello scored after a turnover, and the visitors created further openings as they tried to work their way back into the game. Thibaut Courtois made saves during Rayo's improved second-half spell, while Pedro Díaz struck the post.
Mbappé settled the contest in stoppage time, finishing a move created by Arda Güler to make it 4-1 and complete his brace, as detailed in the original match report. The second goal took Mbappé to seven goals in six appearances in all competitions.

The last few days have been very productive for Real Madrid, both on and off the pitch. Jose Mourinho's side defeated Inter Milan 2-1 in their opening match of the 2026-27 Champions League, while there have also been major breakthroughs regarding new contracts for multiple key players.
In the last 24 hours, it was revealed that Arda Guler has committed to a new contract, with the Türkiye international set to extend his stay at the Bernabeu until 2032. Fellow midfielder Jude Bellingham is also in the process of agreeing a renewal, as Real Madrid bosses seek to tie down two players that are seen as the present and future of the first team.
Now, there is further good news for Real Madrid fans, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that Thibaut Courtois has agreed to extend his stay at the Bernabeu. The veteran goalkeeper's current deal is due to expire at the end of the 2026-27 season, although he has committed to remaining at the club for at least one more year.
Courtois has been a fantastic servant for Real Madrid over the last eight years. Having joined from Chelsea in the summer of 2018, the Belgian has already racked up 338 appearances across all competitions, and he should significantly add to this number by the time he leaves the club, whenever that may be.
Courtois has already spoken of his desire to retire at Real Madrid, and if he continues to perform at a very high level, there is a good chance that his wish is granted – especially given that the club has yet to secure a long-term replacement. The decision on this matter will come when the time is right, but for now, all that matters is the Belgian shot-stopper will remain at the Bernabeu until the summer of 2028 at the very least.

Aston Villa v **** nal, August 2024. Morgan Rogers receives a pass facing his own goal and Declan Rice is immediately on his back, but the Villa midfielder takes the ball with the outside of his right foot and swivels into **** e, leaving Rice behind. The **** e is quickly filled by **** nal's midfield enforcer Thomas Partey, but Rogers knocks it past Partey and races around his back to regather the ball, leaving the Ghanaian splayed on the grass. Their tussle at least buys Rice some time to catch up, but as he lunges in to make the tackle, Rogers takes a clever touch and Rice concedes a clumsy foul.
Arsenal would go on to win but it was an afternoon full of moments like that one in which Rogers tormented his opponents. After the game, Mikel Arteta marvelled at his performance. On Sky Sports, Jamie Redknapp compared Rogers to "Jonah Lomu in his prime", and when you saw the trail of **** nal bodies left on the floor, you understood exactly what he meant.
The Lomu comparison touched on what makes Rogers rare, even unique, in world football, and perhaps helps to explain why Chelsea FC were prepared to spend £117m to sign him this summer. Rogers is a blend of football genres, a walking oxymoron, powerful and graceful, hardy and agile, heavy and light all at once, like some contorted beast with the shoulders of a buffalo and the feet of a squirrel on an errand.

There are other robust ball-carriers at the top of the game: Antoine **** yo and Jude Bellingham come to mind; Ryan Gravenberch, Manu Kone and Rice all perform similar functions from deep. But none have Rogers' package of strength and balance, quick feet and rapid acceleration, that creative eye and subtle movement between the lines. I'm not pushing a panic ******* on. I realize that what I'm about to say will come across as 'low standards', 'acceptance of mediocrity', 'a moral victory', etc — but I will say it anyway and with my chest: If you replay this game 10 more times, Real Madrid wins it 10 times. We just happened to play the freak version where Kylian Mbappe missed a penalty, three big chances, and then Vinicius missed a big chance, Espi had bad luck, and Real Madrid squandered an xG of nearly four. The math checks out: Real Madrid were mostly good but didn't score, somehow. What should've happened was Real Madrid go up one or two goals by half-time, Bellingham and Güler get a deserved ******* ist each, then Real Betis open up in the second half and get cooked. But also, all that to say: Real Madrid didn't deserve to win just because they created more chances, and I just made up a scenario to make myself feel better — possibly because I feel numb to the way the last two seasons have gone. Also: Real Madrid are generally terrible at the Benito Villamarin in the last few years. But, at some point, you have to stop using past precedence as an excuse to lose. How many league ******* les do Real Madrid have in the past 20 years again? Answer: Not enough.
Another Arda Güler masterclass, wasted. He's basically been lights out in every minute he's played in this season. When I have to repeat this after every Arda Güler performance, that's pretty ******* good evidence that he's one of the best players in Europe right now, and certainly, from an ******* ytical standpoint, clearly one of the best creators on the entire continent.

Real Madrid will go back top of La Liga if they avoid defeat to Real Betis on Friday, but the goal will be to claim another victory at the start of the 2026-27 season. Jose Mourinho's side have won three from three so far, although the trip to La Cartuja will be their toughest test.
After a slow start in the narrow victory over Espanyol two weeks ago, Real Madrid have built up steam well in the wins against Real Sociedad and Malaga. Eight goals have been scored across those two matches at the Bernabeu, and the challenge will be to continue that goalscoring form in Seville.
Betis' defence can certainly be got at by Real Madrid, but concern will be the midfield battle. Isco is set to start against his former club, and he will be the talismanic figure that Los Verdiblancos look to play everything through, while Marc Cucurella must also shut down Antony if Mouringo's side are to be successful.
Trips to the green-and-white side of Seville have been difficult for Real Madrid in recent years. 2021 (0-1, Dani Carvajal goal) was the last time a Los Blancos side were victorious in an away fixture against Betis, with three draws and a defeat since. Mourinho will be keen to end this unwanted run on Friday, although it will be easier said than done.
The trio of Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe will be Real Madrid's go-tos for this one, and if even two of them are on form at La Cartuja, the chances of the three points returning to the Spanish capital will be high. But it will be just as important to keep things tight in defence too, especially with the quality that Betis have going forward.

Jude Bellingham has started the new season looking like a player with something to prove.
The 23-year-old's two goals and three **** ists have helped Real Madrid to an impressive start under new boss Jose Mourinho, with three wins from as many games.
Bellingham's performances, and the freedom he has been given in his new role, has attracted a lot of attention.
By playing higher up the pitch, he looks more free, more influential and closer to the role in which he first made such an impact at the Bernabeu in his debut 2023-24 season, where he scored 23 goals as his side won La Liga and the Champions League.
Bellingham's last two campaigns were less consistent, with his displays and attacking influence affected not only by a deeper role, but by recurring injuries. He had a long-standing shoulder problem that required surgery in 2025 and a hamstring issue that kept him out for 10 matches in 2026.

Real Madrid's visit to Sevilla to face Betis is not expected to be an easy one even if Manuel Pellegrini's side just lost to Levante 5-2 a handful of days ago. José Mourinho will have a depleted squad when his Real Madrid team face Inter Milan next week. Arda Güler, Bernardo Silva and Eduardo Camavinga will all be suspended for that game because of cards they were shown during their last games in the European competition last season, which means that Mourinho will have to think outside the box and deploy a different kind of midfield line in the team's Champions League opener.
If Aurelien Tchouameni is able to make his return from injury in time for that game, Mourinho could use him alongside Valverde in the double pivot. However, the French midfielder hasn't rejoined the squad in training yet and he hasn't completed a single session with Real Madrid's new coaching staff, so his presence in the XI could be premature.
As things stand right now, Mourinho could move Jude Bellingham to the double pivot and play both Brahim and Diomandé with Vinicius and Mbappé in the attacking line. Trent Alexander-Arnold could also be an alternative to that move, albeit a more unorthodox one.

The Merengue team lived up to the expectations they had raised with their last game's performance against La Reale, as they scored another four goals in this match to win it 4-0.
Jude Bellingham was inarguably the best player on the pitch in this game, and once again showed his lethal form. He scored an amazing solo goal a few minutes into the first half, and then forced another own goal from a Malaga defender. Beyond the goals, his overall performance on the pitch was also excellent.
As Diario AS has reported, the Englishman also talked to the press after this game and commented on his personal form and his team's performance. Talking about the match against Malaga, the midfielder was still somewhat unsatisfied despite the good result:
"The first half was a great game, but the last 20 minutes… absolutely terrible, I think. I don't know why, but we weren't good."

After a cagey first half that saw the scores level, Los Blancos came back from the break and picked apart the Basque club with utmost ease.
A hat-trick from Kylian Mbappe and a goal from Vinicius Junior would have enthralled Bernabeu fans, but there was a more interesting aspect beyond just the goals.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the victory over Sociedad offered perhaps the clearest indication yet of what Jose Mourinho wants from his attack.

José Mourinho's first home game in his second spell in charge of Real Madrid got off to a positive start as they defeated Real Sociedad by at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Coming off the back of a last-minute victory against Espanyol in gameweek one, Real Madrid started brightly but took until the 40th minute to open the scoring through Kylian Mbappé. Real Sociedad quickly responded and equalised before the break as the sides went into half time level.
Mbappé scored his second on the hour mark before Vinícius Júnior tapped home from close range after good work from Jude Bellingham. Mbappé completed his hattrick ten minutes before the end, as Real Madrid strolled to a convincing victory to go top of La Liga.
Madrid started well and had a couple of early sightings of goal, the closest coming after Vinícius Júnior slipped Kylian Mbappé in behind, but he took on the shot from a difficult angle and it was a comfortable save for Álex Remiro.
The best of the opening ten minutes fell to the visitors and to Mikel Oyarzabal, who found himself free in the box, but his low effort was too close to Thibaut Courtois and the Belgian shot-stopper was able to keep it out.
