Tress Way has been a member of the Commanders for more than a decade, but it sounds like they're going to have to start planning for life without him.
Way will begin his 13th season with the team on Sunday and he announced on Thursday that he expects it to be his final one as an NFL player.
"I am pretty sure this is gonna be my last season," Way said, via Nicki Jhabvala of TheAthletic.com.
Way joined the Commanders in 2014 after being waived by the Bears and he has appeared in every game for the team over the last 12 years. He is a three-time Pro Bowler and was named a second-team All-Pro in 2019. He is currently tied for fifth in games played in franchise history and will be No. 3 on the list if he plays in every game this season.

Why is everyone, all of a sudden, so down on the 2026 Washington Commanders? In recent days, several in the national media have predicted that the Commanders will finish last in the NFC East this upcoming season. Yes, that's right, even behind the New York Giants.
The doubts began when left tackle Laremy Tunsil tore his triceps on Aug. 8. However, the script really turned against the Commanders after their joint practice with the Ravens. And when one national **** yst jumps in with a "bold prediction," it becomes a trend. Picking Washington to finish last in the NFC East is apparently the new thing to do.
On a recent edition of "First Things First," all three hosts apparently saw Nicki Jhabvala's X post on Aug. 26, where she called the Commanders' offensive line "inoperable" during the joint practice with the Ravens. Nick Wright, Chris Broussard and Danny Parkins all picked Washington last.
"I don't like their weapons. The offensive line is banged up. They have a bad defense," Wright said.
It doesn't sound like Wright knows what he's talking about. Why? How does he know the defense is bad? Could it be bad? Absolutely. Do we know that it's bad? No. Washington made a serious financial investment on that side of the ball this offseason and hired Brian Flores' top lieutenant, Daronte Jones, as the new defensive coordinator.

Transfer deadline day for Liverpool was fairly slow.
The Anfield outfit made a lot of their moves on bank holiday Monday with deals for Lucca Brughmans and Djylian N'Guessan being lined up before the window slammed shut.
Bradley Barcola was also welcomed on 31 August with the Frenchman being one of the Reds' most anticipated deals of the window.
After his arrival, Liverpool had four left-wingers among their ranks and only one right-winger.
However, with the way that Andoni Iraola wants his wingers to play, they all need to be versatile and able to play anywhere across the front three which is why the Reds probably aren't panicking that much about their attacking options.

More than anything to do with his expected performance on the field headed into Year 3 of his NFL career, the story of Jayden Daniels' offseason focused on a strange beef that became public with his college team.
The Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback for LSU, who is now the starting signal-caller for the Washington Commanders, sent his former university a cease-and-desist letter over the use of his name, image, and likeness after the Tigers gave his No. 5 jersey to cornerback DJ Pickett.
The story has already been memed to death, but it's apparently no laughing matter for Daniels, who refused to answer questions about it during a press scrum earlier this week.
"Nah, I posted a statement on Instagram and it said everything I needed to say. So, appreciate y'all," Daniels told reporters.
The reporter who asked the question was Nicki Jhabvala, who covers the Commanders for The Athletic. After the video of Daniels refusing to answer the question went viral on social media, some online took issue with asking Daniels about the situation at all.

Much is being made about the Tennessee ***** ans' supposed ongoing struggles in the secondary. It was undeniably disappointing to watch San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Kurtis Rourke complete 12-of-14 passes against the ***** ans' starting secondary in the first preseason game. Starting quarterback Cam Ward has also routinely carved up the starters for most of training camp.
Head coach Robert Saleh isn't panicking, but recently admitted there should be a sense of urgency. Understandably so. The ***** ans committed more than $100 million in free agency to new starting cornerbacks Cor'Dale Flott and Alontae Taylor, and they've been at the forefront of the struggles.
With the ***** ans doing some soul searching, you wonder if cornerback Joshua Williams could contribute something positive at cornerback. He was the third cornerback the ***** ans signed in free agency earlier this offseason. His shared history with Mike Borgonzi and the Kansas City Chiefs made him a target.
Williams has been wearing a yellow non-contact jersey at training camp due to a pectoral muscle injury. Coach Saleh recently claimed he's close to shedding that jersey and being a full participant at practice. Saleh also praised his length and work ethic, and Jim Wyatt noted he had a pass breakup during individual drills earlier this week.
Williams is long and competitive. He possesses the physical profile Coach Saleh prefers in his cornerbacks. If Taylor and Flott struggle into the regular season, perhaps Williams will start getting worked into the rotation. For now, he's simply focused on being healthy enough to contribute once his number is called.

The Vanderbilt Commodores started the 2026 season with a win that left a "bitter" taste in Coach Darren Ambrose's mouth according to his post-game interview. He used the words sluggish, lethargic, and choreographed to describe the performance. Coach Ambrose harped on being proud and happy with the victory, but he kept focusing on different flaws in the performance. If you saw my comments during and after the match, I am proud to say Coach and I are on the same wavelength.
The pushback that I got was that it was just game 1. It was. I am not panicking. My predictions for the season have not changed. My thoughts about the talent on the team have not changed, except for some concern about one particular position. Armas in goal was not very convincing. Again, it was match 1. I am not going to react too strongly yet.
The Commodores had plenty of possession and tons of shot attempts. They spent more than a third of the match (35%) in possession in the attacking half. Attempting 21 shots but with only 7 on target is where the sharpness and intensity that Ambrose found lacking came into play. They generated 11 corners yet did not score off one. Conversely, SMU was able to turn 21% attacking possession and 8 shot attempts into 4 shots on target and 3 goals. Granted, 1 goal for the Mustangs was a cross that deflected off Grace Freeman's leg in a truly unfortunate moment where Armas was diving out to claim the cross.
The number of players used is really intriguing to me. Typically, Coach Ambrose has gone deep into the bench early in seasons. It normally is paired down to 14 to 16 by the time SEC play starts, but early season matches often see 20 or more players. The tightness of the match and dissatisfaction with the performance may have been why the starters played more as they tried to work out the kinks.
Courtney Jones, Olivia Stafford, and Sydney Watts all have 4 shot attempts and a goal is not particularly surprising. I would have expected Pentz to get off more shots, but she had the early goal on her only attempt. I do not think Fullerton at CAM and Pentz at striker beside Watts is the best lineup for this squad based on natural inclinations of the players and how that effects ******* ing.

LAWRENCE — Speaking recently, as fall camp is in full swing for Kansas football, **** ociate head coach Andy Kotelnicki spoke positively about how things have gone.
Kotelnicki likes what's happening schematically on both sides of the ball. There's been a level of retention, in part because of the amount of work they can do with the players now over the course of the year, that's been impressive. As much as there is attention this month on fall camp, that learning process dates back all the way to January.
Kotelnicki, for one, is impressed with how well the offensive line is working together. As they work out who fits where best, he's excited about the potential of that group. There's also more size there than when he was previously on staff at KU, prior to a recent stint at Penn State, and he says that hasn't come at the expense of athleticism and physicality.

One of the primary needs in order to get back to the top of the NFL was to improve the defense, and Washington did just that by drafting Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles with the No. 7 overall pick in the NFL Draft.
Styles was one of the best off-ball linebacker prospects in recent years. He was a tackling machine at Ohio State, has great size and is an incredible athlete for the position, making him a home run pick in the top 10. Now, in his first training camp in Washington, Styles is already making a strong impression on his teammates.

The Washington Commanders opened training camp on Wednesday, and by all reports, the defense has the early advantage over the offense. That's not a surprise. It's how things usually go this time of the year, especially when each side is installing a new scheme.
After an uneven start on Day 1 of training camp, quarterback Jayden Daniels was better on Thursday. Far too often on Wednesday, Daniels held onto the ball for a split second too long. While no contact is allowed right now, Daniels would've been sacked multiple times if it were a game.

Obviously, Jhabvala is posting a GIF of Stefon Diggs, indicating that her takeaway from two days of camp is that the Commanders need the free-agent wideout.

It's not a complete surprise because general manager Adam Peters spent the offseason trying to land another top receiver opposite McLaurin. San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk was long thought to be a potential option, but that's now off the table for various reasons.

President Donald Trump took the podium to roast Hollywood and the media, invoking the rapper while joking about the organization's April gala, which was cut short after a gunman breached security and opened fire.

Charlotte (51-46) had to battle from behind, but a pair of rehabbing big leaguers helped spark the comeback. The Tides grabbed an early 1-0 lead after the dreaded leadoff walk surrendered by David Sandlin came around to score in the first. However, the Knights’ cavalry broke through in the fourth with a three-run frame. Rikuu Nishida worked a free pass before Everson Pereira roped an RBI double. Austin Hays followed by launching a two-run homer to put Charlotte in front for good.
Norfolk tried to creep back in with a pair in the fifth, but Charlotte had a four-run answer. Andy Weber mashed a homer, Nolan Jones drove in another run, and suddenly it was 7-3. The Tides did their best to make it interesting late, nicking Tanner McDougal for one and then squeezing two more out of Garrett Schoenle in the ninth, but the comeback fell a run short. Sandlin, for his part, was stingy with hits but generous with walks, serving up three in four innings and missing out on the win. He fanned two.

LONDON (AP) — Taylor Fritz was three games into his Wimbledon quarterfinal against Alexander Zverev when his knee tendonitis started flaring up, and the American knew right away he was in trouble.
“I was just like panicking, ‘What am I going to do?’” the sixth-seeded Fritz said. “I just didn’t expect it at all.”
In the end, there was nothing he could do.
Zverev's serve and the pain in Fritz's knee were too much to overcome as the last American man left in the singles tournament lost 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 on No. 1 Court on Wednesday.
Fritz, who reached the 2024 U.S. Open final after beating Zverev in the quarterfinals, has struggled with knee tendonitis in the past. But he had no indication previously at Wimbledon that it might flare up again, aside from a bit of pain toward the end of his fourth-round win over Alexander Bublik.

It’s been almost a decade, but the Atlanta Falcons still aren’t living down the horrific memories of their 28-3 Super Bowl collapse against the New England Patriots. Just when you think there’s no possible way for the Falcons to catch a stray during the World Cup, Argentina vs. Egypt happens — in Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, no less.
Egypt legitimately looked like a team about to pull off the upset of the tournament up 2-0 with less than 30 minutes to go. Then, in the span of four minutes, Argentina roared back to life with two goals from Cristian Romero and Lionel Messi to even the score. It’s here the comparisons began.

During the Rose Garden luncheon held at the White House in Washington, D.C. to celebrate the launch of Trump Accounts, the American leader singled out the Super Bass rapper for praise.

Even a change to the Balance of Performance (BoP) to the disadvantage of Aston Martin cannot stop Nicki Thiim on his favorite track: The Danish Comtoyou pilot secured pole position for Sunday's race at the Norisring after also topping the charts on Saturday. He achieved this despite running in Qualifying Group B, which was out earlier this time and faced less grip on the track.
"What a beautiful, holy Sunday to be standing here again," a delighted Thiim told German TV partner ran.de. He is the first driver since Thomas Preining at the 2023 season finale in Hockenheim to take two poles in one weekend. "I am still speechless."
The fact that his car has 15 kilograms more ballast on board than on Saturday due to the BoP change - and that he will carry an additional 20 kilograms of success ballast in the race - has not escaped him. Wiebelhaus' performance is remarkable, as he is competing for the first time in his career on the Norisring, which is extremely challenging due to its ******* ps. Cyclosporiasis, a stomach-churning illness caused by a parasite often found on produce, has sickened hundreds across more than 17 U.S. states since May 1, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state health data. One state, Michigan, is contending with a cluster of infections that has already more than tripled its total case count compared with 2025.
While state health authorities, the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are working to determine a common thread among the illnesses, a singularly related outbreak hasn't been identified. Instead, the cases thus far appear to be part of a seasonal surge, though officials are searching for a potential throughline.
"CDC has no evidence of a single, multistate Cyclospora outbreak linking cases happening right now and being reported in press," the agency said in a June 2 statement to USA TODAY. "The data currently found on CDC's website is a surveillance count of cases across the United States of people with cyclosporiasis. This number includes clusters of cases currently under investigation by FDA and cases that have not been linked to a common source."

The Athletic recently asked "one outstanding question" for all 32 NFL teams while everyone is on summer break. Nicki Jhabvala asked that familiar question for the Commanders.
After finishing last season 5-12, the Commanders prioritized rebuilding the defense and creating a more “balanced” offense. They overhauled the systems on both sides of the ball, added speed and youth across the roster and spent more than $421 million in total contract value this offseason. But after OTAs and minicamp, the team still clearly lacks a true No. 2 receiver behind Terry McLaurin, doesn’t have an obvious leader in the running backs room and has questionable depth at tight end — all issues that contributed to their fall last season. It’s possible the team will consider adding a wideout later in the offseason or even after training camp, especially if a certain disgruntled 49er gets released. It’s also possible the Commanders find success with a running backs-by-committee approach, and develop their young tight ends behind Chig Okonkwo into reliable pass catchers. But as of now, the team lacks a consistent playmaker alongside Daniels and its star receiver.
Everything Jhabvala said here is fair and true. GM Adam Peters swung big in free agency for Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce, but he wanted to remain in Indianapolis. Washington pivoted, bringing back Dyami Brown after one unproductive year in Jacksonville. Peters also added veteran Van Jefferson and used a third-round pick on Antonio Williams. The Commanders believe Williams could have a big rookie year in David Blough's offense.
If you judge this offseason by the wide receiver position only, then sure, it's fair to question if enough was done. Terry McLaurin turns 31 in September, and for the first time in his career, missed significant time with an injury last season. That doesn't mean it will happen again. McLaurin looks healthy and motivated to put last season behind him. But what if he misses several games with a hamstring injury? That's a scary thought. The Commanders have done a good job of building a deeper and better wide receiver room. But a true standout option opposite McLaurin remains a question.

Freshpet co-founder and president Scott Morris plans to step back from his roles at the US pet-food group.
Morris will move into an advisory position on 20 October, when the company marks its 20th anniversary. He will remain available to the business for 18 months and will be succeeded as president by Freshpet's COO Nicki Baty.
Morris said in a statement: "I am incredibly proud of what we have built together and proud to leave a great company and great business in the hands of an amazing group of people. The leadership team, employees and partners, who will carry Freshpet forward, are ready to write the next chapter.
"While I am transitioning away from my operating responsibilities at Freshpet, I plan to remain supportive however I can in the years ahead. I look forward to watching Freshpet continue to grow, innovate and make an even bigger impact on pets and the people who love them."
Baty will remain COO while also serving a company president.

The Wisconsin Badgers became the first school to offer 2028 Minnesota guard KJ Wilson after he camped with the program earlier this week.
Wilson hails from the talented D1 Minnesota AAU program that has fielded talents such as Steven Crowl, Tyler Wahl, Jack Janicki, Nate Reuvers, and Ben Carlson in recent years. The Badgers have been plucking talent from the program in the 2027 class as well, landing a commitment from center Jack Thelen earlier this month.
Wisconsin is also well in with four-star target Baboucarr Ann, who would be ranked as the Badgers’ best player if he commits to the 2027 class.
Wilson competed in the Adidas 3SSB circuit back in late April, and 247Sports’s Eric Bossi had this to say about the lead guard’s performance.
“The leading scorer in the 16U division, Wilson has tremendous quickness, good length and can find ways to generate buckets in even the tightest of windows,” Bossi wrote. “He compensates for a general lack of strength with his scoring savvy but does have a nice frame to grow into down the road so we aren’t too concerned about any strength issues long term. He got into the paint, he made a lot of jumpers from deep and showed off plenty of playmaking ability for others. We’re looking forward to checking him out more this spring and summer.”

In its second year with the Ford Mustang, the US manufacturer has reason to celebrate its first DTM pole position. Arjun Maini delivered a 1:19.750 for HRT and Ford to secure the top spot on the grid after already starting from second on Saturday. The Indian driver was 0.128 seconds faster than Ferrari pilot Matteo Cairoli from Emil Frey Racing.
"I cannot thank the team enough, really", said a delighted Maini, who secured the second DTM pole of his career after his 2024 success at Spielberg, which he achieved back then in an HRT Mercedes. "Considering where we were last year and the progress we have made: to have such good qualifyings in a row now, strong race results, and strong pace."

Nicki Thiim is lurking in third place, having set a qualifying record of 1:19.463 on Saturday. However, the times on Sunday were significantly slower, possibly due to the rain the previous day. Thiim was 0.157 seconds off pole in his Comtoyou Aston Martin. Fourth place went to rookie Finn Wiebelhaus in the second HRT Ford.
Both the Ford and the Aston Martin were slowed down slightly by the first Balance of Performance adjustment at the Lausitzring, but the result justifies the decisions made by the BoP officials, as seven different manufacturers will start from the first eight positions.
Fifth place went to Abt driver Luca Engstler (+0.243), the best-placed pilot in the new Lamborghini Temerario, followed by Thomas Preining as the strongest Porsche driver in sixth. The top representative for the brand with the star was Maro Engel (+0.258), who put his Winward Mercedes in seventh. This means he will start directly behind his arch-rival Preining following their Saturday duel.
The best BMW driver was Marco Wittmann, who was 0.330 seconds short in the Schubert BMW. "Finally starting from the top 10 again," said the Franconian with relief, who is in a good fourth place in the overall standings despite very consistent results. Qualifying is also only rarely a strength of the BMW M4 GT3 Evo this season.
