Henry Winter has questioned whether FIFA let the Argentine Football ***** ociation off lightly while individual players took the heaviest punishment.
The sanctions landed more than a month after Spain's 1-0 extra-time win over Argentina in the World Cup final. Leandro Paredes received the harshest, a 10-match international ban and a $90,000 fine, while Nahuel Molina was suspended for seven games with the same fine.
For Winter, the contrast between the two penalties is the problem.

Argentina have also been ordered to play their next two home matches with 50% capacity, though one match of that sanction is suspended.
The Argentinian Football ******* ociation (AFA) has been fined $321,000 (£235,000) for breaches of the Fifa disciplinary code relating to using a sports event for demonstrations of a non-sporting nature, team misconduct, and discriminatory chants and gestures by its supporters.

Things turned ugly following Spain's 1-0 win over Argentina at the 2026 World Cup final. After the final whistle, a massive scuffle broke out, in which Argentina's Leandro Paredes grabbed Spain's Eric García by the throat.
The brawl was eventually broken up, but FIFA quickly announced it would investigate the situation a day after the contest.
That investigation concluded Friday, as FIFA announced a number of punishments as a result of the brawl. In a statement, FIFA said the Argentina FA would be fined $321,000 and would have to play its next two games with limited fans in attendance. Additionally, four players and one team official were issued suspensions for their roles in the fracas.
Paredes received the largest suspension, and will miss the next 10 matches after grabbing Garcia by the throat. Paredes also received a fine of $90,000 for his actions.
In addition to Paredes, Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada and Pablo Martín Páez Gavira were the three other players to be fined and suspended as a result of the brawl. Molina will miss the next seven matches and was also fined $90,000. Almada and Gavira were each suspended one match and fined $30,000.

Roma surged into an early 2-0 lead away to Borussia Dortmund with Paulo Dybala and Bryan Cristante, but were pegged back 2-2 and Nahuel Molina made his debut.
The summer had been largely dismal, including heavy defeats to Cardiff City and Brighton, so Gian Piero Gasperini wanted to see a very different attitude in their last test.
Wesley was injured and new signing Nahuel Molina on the bench, but otherwise it was a strong starting XI in Dortmund. The hosts started Italy internationals Luca Reggiani and Samuele Inacio.

It took only a handful of minutes for Roma to take the lead at Signal Iduna Park, as an initial cross from the right was charged down, allowing Dybala to drill home the rebound from a tricky angle.

While teenage sensation Rodrigo Mora continues to twist in the wind as Roma and Porto struggle to agree on the finer points of a €50 million transfer, the Giallorossi remain active on other fronts, particularly the wing-back position. In addition to bringing Champions League experience from his days with Atlético Madrid, newly signed right-back Nahuel Molina gives the club a dependable trio of wing-backs, joining Devyne Rensch and our top-rated U-23 player, Wesley França.
There's just one small problem: they're all nominally right wing-backs. Granted, Wesley's success on the left last season gives Gian Piero Gasperini more options at the position, but Roma still lacks a bona fide left wing-back. Earlier this summer, we discussed the possibility of signing Alessio Cacciamani, Torino's über-talented teenage winger, only to remember what a pain in the ***** it is dealing with Urban Cairo.
There have been intermittent whispers that Roma remains interested in Cacciamani, but over the past week, the club has become increasingly linked with Destiny Udogie. The 23-year-old Verona native officially joined Spurs in 2023 after a successful two-year stint with Udinese, where he scored eight goals and provided seven ***** ists in 68 league appearances.
While he hasn't quite matched those counting stats with Spurs, he's been a key piece of the puzzle at Tottenham, making 94 appearances across all competitions over the past three seasons. When silly season began, it seemed Roberto De Zerbi was keen to keep Udogie in North London, but the transfer pendulum has swung the other way.
According to multiple sources in Italy, including Nicolò Schira and Alfredo Pedullà, Spurs are reportedly warming to the idea of life without Udogie.

AS Roma and Atlético de Madrid on Wednesday announced Nahuel Molina's transfer following four seasons in the Spanish capital.
Molina on Monday touched down in Rome, where dozens of Giallorossi supporters greeted him upon his return to Italian football. Upon confirmation of his move, Molina published an Instagram post commemorating his four-year stint at Atlético, which featured peaks and valleys across 181 games in all competitions.
"Today, after four years, it's time for me to say goodbye to this great club," Molina wrote. "I'm grateful to have been part of this wonderful family. I want to thank all my teammates and the coaching staff for helping me grow across all these years, as well as everyone behind the scenes who has been there day to day, supporting me every step of the way. And finally, I want to thank all the Atlético fans, who are the heart of this club."
Molina reportedly has been offered a four-year contract worth €2.7 million per season to return to Serie A, where he starred for Udinese before Atlético signed him in 2022. Following crunch talks last week, Roma and Atleti reached a verbal agreement over a transfer between €17 million and €19 million with bonuses included.
Molina had been under contract to 2028 after Atlético exercised an extension clause in his contract last year. However, the Argentina right-back was deemed expendable because Atleti need to raise funds to finance the arrival of a center-back; the club is targeting Cristian Romero, Molina's national teammate, and the Tottenham Hotspur central defender has agreed personal terms ahead of his move to Madrid.

Nahuel Molina is expected in Italy on Monday for his medical tests, ready to complete the transfer from Atletico Madrid to Roma for circa €13m plus €4m in add-ons.
A deal was struck earlier this week between the two clubs, and although there are some slight variations on the reports of the fee, it is in total amounting to €17-18m.

However, Molina was part of the Argentina squad that lost the 2026 World Cup Final, and therefore it was decided not to interrupt his late vacation.
He has been staying in Ibiza and is enjoying the last few hours of his time off before beginning the new adventure in the Eternal City.

After Santiago Castro and Konstantinos Koulierakis, Nahuel Molina will be the Giallorossi's third signing of the summer.
While awaiting the arrival of the right-footed left-back, Roma is preparing to welcome the Argentine full-back, formerly of Udinese and Atlético Madrid.
After the World Cup concluded on July 19th, Molina then enjoyed a couple of weeks of relaxation with his family before recharging his batteries and dedicating himself to his new adventure in the capital.
As reported by Matteo Moretto, in the next few hours, the Argentine will be in Rome to finalize the contract that will tie him to the Giallorossi for the next four years.
Molina will have the opportunity to integrate with his new teammates and try to immediately connect with Gasperini.

In a recent post on X, journalist Paul O'Keefe claimed that Tottenham Hotspur have identified Villarreal forward Georges Mikautadze as a target for this summer transfer window. It is believed that Spurs are hoping to improve their attack by recruiting the Georgian striker this off-season.
Mikautadze enjoyed a good run of form at the Spanish club recently as he put in a run of impressive displays for them in the final third. The 25-year-old banged in 13 goals and grabbed six **** ists in 32 appearances for the Yellow Submarine last season in the league.
The Georgia international is currently one of the most talented forwards in La Liga. Hence, it is no surprise that Spurs are eyeing a move to bring him to England in this transfer period.
His current deal at Villarreal will run out in the summer of 2031, which could make it tough for Tottenham to land him on a cut-price deal this off-season.

After Castro and Koulierakis, Roma is very close to making their third signing.
To strengthen their right flank, the Giallorossi had their eye on Givairo Read, a 2006-born Dutchman currently owned by Feyenoord.
However, the Rotterdam club's demands were deemed excessive by those at Trigoria, so they opted for Nahuel Molina, currently playing for Atlético Madrid.
Yesterday, Roma presented the Colchoneros with an offer of €17 million, including bonuses, to bring the former Udinese player back to Italy. This sum is significantly lower than the €30 million Feyenoord was asking for Read.
According to Matteo Moretto on Fabrizio Romano's YouTube channel, the deal for Roma-Molina is very close to being finalized and could be completed between today and tomorrow.

Roma is looking to strengthen its right flank.
The difficulties encountered in negotiations for Givairo Read have prompted the Giallorossi management to evaluate other players, and in the last few hours, Nahuel Molina has emerged as the favored alternative.
There remains a gap between Roma's offer and Feyenoord's request for Read.
Roma's offer of €25 million plus €2 million in bonuses was deemed insufficient by the Dutch club, which continues to demand around €30 million to release the 2006-born player.
According to Il Tempo, Roma has already submitted an official offer to Atlético Madrid for Molina: €13 million plus €3 million in bonuses for Nahuel Molina.

Reports are growing that Roma have turned their focus to Atletico Madrid and Argentina international Nahuel Molina, offering €13m plus €3m add-ons.
Their first choice for the right-back role after Zeki Celik's departure had been Givairo Read of Feyenoord, but after their top bid of €25m plus €3m bonus and a 10 per cent cut of the sell-on fee was rejected, they seem unwilling to push any higher.

Now Il Tempo newspaper suggest that an opening proposal has been put forward to Atletico Madrid worth €13m plus €3m in add-ons.

For a decade, one player's genius bought the Albiceleste the world's affection. His exit leaves the rest of the team standing there without it.
One image did the rounds after the 2026 World Cup Final: eleven men turning their backs on the winners, rather than facing them as tradition and basic grace require.
On July 19, in a stadium in New Jersey, the defending world champions stood in a row and stared at the grass while Spain lifted the trophy a few feet away. Not one of them watched. Behind them, Leandro Paredes had already grabbed a Spanish player by the throat and, per Alan Shearer, "threw two or three haymakers" into someone's face. Enzo Fernández had been sent off before extra time even started. Nahuel Molina reportedly took a swing at Rodri. FIFA has since appointed a prosecutor. That image, far more than the 1-0 scoreline, is what most of the planet took home from this final.

Spain midfielder Gavi does not want Argentina's Leandro Paredes to be suspended for his part in the altercation at the end of Sunday's World Cup final.
Paredes, along with team-mate Nahuel Molina and Argentina coach Roberto Ayala, were involved in the brawl seconds after the final whistle blew on Spain's 1-0 victory at the MetLife Stadium.
Fifa has confirmed that no red card was shown to Paredes on the field, but on Monday evening Fifa announced that its disciplinary committee had appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to investigate possible breaches of the Fifa disciplinary code during the incident.
Gavi told El Partidazo de COPE: "I don't think (Paredes) should be suspended. I understand it's not a good image for children, but I think there's also that side to football, which is a bit more physical, more aggressive.
"The most logical thing would have been to send him off during the match, and that's it. In the end, I think it's all football, and it has to be that way."

Argentina face England at Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday evening in the World Cup semi-finals, targeting a place in Sunday's final against Spain at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
The reigning world champions have won back-to-back Copa América ******* les and the 2022 World Cup. A win on Wednesday would put them in a fourth consecutive major final — a run of consistency unmatched in modern football.
