The Eagles renew their rivalry with Inola on Aug. 28, providing an immediate measuring stick against a Longhorns program coming off a 9-3 season.
Inola graduated 18 seniors, but Sequoyah coach Rob Gilbreath still expects a difficult matchup and wants to see Sequoyah compete better than it did in last year's meeting, a 46-6 loss.
"They kind of put it on us last year, so hopefully we can compete with them this year," Gilbreath said. "They graduated heavily, but they still have that really good running back [Jayce Kent]. He was a freshman last year, and he was a game-changer. So we'll have to be able to stop him and be able to move the ball on them and have less mistakes than they do."
Cleveland presents another significant early challenge. After going through a rebuilding period of its own, Gilbreath expects the Tigers to bring a talented roster to Sequoyah.

BLOOMINGTON — Sam Alexis' eligibility for the forthcoming college basketball season was thrown in doubt Wednesday, when the Tennessee Court of Appeals issued a stay on a lower-court ruling granting several athletes an injunction against the NCAA's application of its new age-based eligibility model.
Alexis is one of a number of players who graduated high school in 2022 and played four years of college sports in that same ****** e of time seeking relief against the NCAA's decision to apply its new five-years-to-play-five rule only to athletes beginning with the ongoing academic year. Athletes across several sports and in several states have won relief against the ****** ociation's decision, granting those athletes an additional year of eligibility as well.
One of several athletes party to that filing, Alexis gained his fifth year when the Chancery Court of Davidson County, Tennessee, granted its injunction earlier this summer. Alexis played his first two years of college basketball at Chattanooga.

Tom O'Brien was a college basketball ***** istant at Bradley in 1967 when the opportunity arose to come back to coach at Cathedral, his alma mater.
O'Brien would leave a couple different times as coach, but never really did give up his connection to the school where he graduated from in 1949. O'Brien died on Aug. 17 at age 95.
"Tom had such a history with Cathedral, graduating from there and all the changes the school went through in good times and bad times, Tom was always part of it," said Steve Hodgson, who coached with O'Brien and then later succeeded him. "It goes even beyond that. There are so many families in the Catholic and Eastside community and people that I've heard from in the last week through Tom's passing that he touched."

Aug. 22—MITCHELL — The Dakota Wesleyan University football team enters the 2026 season with a clear objective: get the running game going.
The Tigers finished last in the Great Plains Athletic Conference a season ago in rushing yards per game at 59.5, rushing touchdowns with three and rushing yards per attempt at 2.0. Those numbers contributed to an offense that finished third-to-last in the GPAC in scoring at 17.5 points per game and second-to-last in total offense at 283.9 yards per game.
With the season opener set for Saturday, Aug. 29, against rival Dakota State in Madison, DWU is hoping a more experienced offensive line combined with a new lead back can help change those numbers.
Junior Landon Iverson is stepping into the starting running back role after serving primarily as a backup last season. The 5-foot-6, 180-pound Hot Springs product appeared in all 11 games and finished with 100 rushing yards. He was fourth on the team in carries behind junior quarterback Jed Jenson and running backs Koby Kayser and Lane Darrow in 2025, who both graduated.
Now, Iverson is being counted on to carry a larger share of the workload.

The Logansport Berries graduated some great players but return a lot of talent for second-year coach Troy Hudson.
The Logansport mentor is looking forward to what could be a special season. The Berries will be led by 14 seniors.
A year ago the Berries largely went how Elliot Baldini (6-1, 205) went. He rushed for 1,431 yards and 15 touchdowns and wasn't even healthy for basically the entire season as he battled illness and injury.
The Berries still managed to go 8-4 and finish runner-up in their Class 4A sectional with a narrow loss to Lebanon.
Hudson is looking forward to what Baldini can do when fully healthy for his senior year.

The Pioneer Panthers graduated a senior class that led them to the Class 1A state championship game a year ago.
The question is after heavy losses to graduation, can the Panthers keep running like a well-oiled machine?
It appears the answer is yes when considering the amount of talent they have coming back and the upcoming players they have available.
The Panthers were a four-headed monster a year ago and they return two of the four members of the starting backfield: senior Shiloh Rine (6-1, 188) and junior Phillip McFatridge (5-9, 162). Both gained over 1,000 yards last year despite being the third and fourth options. They'll return to their wingback positions and will likely have bigger roles this year.
"They weren't necessarily our go-to guys with (Noah) Van Meter and Micah (Rans), but they definitely showed they had that play-making ability," Pioneer coach Adam Berry said. "They'll be more of that focal point for us this year being the upperclassmen, being the leaders of the team. Both were very committed to the offseason and are just that much stronger, that much quicker. And they can also show that they have good hands. So we are looking for them to definitely be the leaders of our offense this year."

The lawsuit was filed by players who graduated high school in 2022, whose college eligibility ended last season and who were not included in the NCAA's new rule that grants most players five years of eligibilty, beginning next season.
After winning a ruling in district court, many of those players were trying to figure out how to return to their former schools to play another year.
This ruling, by a 2-1 margin from a panel on the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals n Denver, puts that on hold until the appeal can be heard in total. BYU added a massive late addition to its roster as Michigan State big man Jaxon Kohler announced his commitment to BYU. Kohler is eligible to play this coming season as the state of California lawsuit he was part of received a temporary injunction allowing fifth-year graduated players college eligibility. The NCAA may appeal the decision.
The American Fork, Utah native is LDS and was one of the best big men in the Big 10 last year. Kohler spent all four seasons at Michigan State, going from bench player his first two seasons to starting 69 games his last two seasons for Tom Izzo. Kohler went from a back-to-basket big man his first two year two a stretch big his last season. As a senior, Kohler averaged 12.5 points, 8.9 rebounds, and shot 39% from three and and 87% from the FT line. Kohler was 0-5 combined his first two seasons from three, and as a senior shot 58-139. For all players listed at 6-foot-10 or taller, Jaxon was tied for sixth in college basketball last season in threes made (stat courtesy of X account CBBAnalystics). Listed at 6-foot-10 by Michigan State, Kohler primarily played the four in Michigan State's big lineup but will likely primarily play the five spot at BYU.
Had Jaxon entered the transfer portal back in April, he would be a top 10 transfer this cycle. If he would have entered the portal then, he would have been the most impactful player big man BYU could have realistically landed. Just look at what Kohler did when Michigan State played at Michigan, the national champion with three lottery big men in their frontcourt. Kohler scored 23 points and grabbed 8 boards on 10-13 shooting from the floor and 2-4 from three. He led the Spartans in points and rebounds against the vaunted Wolverine front line. Kohler had 12 double doubles last season and was top 5 in the Big 10 and offensive and defensive rebound percentage.
Kohler takes BYU to a fringe top 25 team to a Big 12 **** le **** le contender. I have Jaxon as the best offensive big man in the Big 12 and one of the three best bigs in the league along with Arizona's Mo Krivas and Houston's Jo Tugler.
Jaxon is not a shot blocker, and I have questions about BYU's defense. He does bring effort and great rebounding prowess on that end, however, and should make BYU one the nation's top offenses. No big that is elite on both ends of the floor stays in college more than one year. Jaxon is a fifth-year senior that will be one of the top big men in college basketball. Out of any big man that BYU has pursued this offseason, none would have been more impactful or lead to more wins that Kohler will.

Sioux Falls Christian is the reigning state champion and they were the only unanimous number one in the preseason polls, claiming all 20 first place votes. Lennox finished as the state runner-up and they sit in second. Dell Rapids, West Central and Madison close out the top five.

South Alabama guard Chaze Harris, the reigning Sun Belt Player of the Year, has heard from Washington, SMU, and Seton Hall in the transfer portal after being granted an injunction to become eligible for the 2026-27 season, according to a report from 247Sports' Dushawn London.
Harris' injunction stems from similar cases around the country, granting fourth-year seniors who have recently graduated the opportunity to return to school in the wake of the NCAA's change to a 5-in-5 eligibility model that gave class of 2023 athletes and later the ability to play five years of competition. A similar injunction recently allowed Washington football defensive lineman Ta'ita'i Uiagalelei to return to the Huskies shortly after the beginning of fall practice.

Several of the best teams in women's college basketball are heading to Phoenix for the inaugural Scripps Sports Women's Basketball Showcase on Wednesday, Dec. 16, at Mortgage Matchup Center.
The showcase will feature two marquee matchups, with defending national champion UCLA facing Duke and USC taking on Miami.
The Bruins will look different from their national championship team as all five starters graduated. UCLA is still an expected preseason Top 15 program and added Iowa State transfer forward Addy Brown. Brown averaged 11.9 points, 8.8 rebounds and 5.3 ***** ists in her junior season. Returning forward Sienna Betts averaged 6 points and 4 rebounds in 14.1 minutes per game in her freshman season.
The Blue Devils look like one of the strongest teams, with three of their five starters from last year's ACC Championship squad returning. Duke also added transfer Aaliyah Crump from Texas, who averaged 7.9 points and 41.1% shooting in her freshman season. Crump was the No. 5 recruit in the 2025 class, while returning guard Emilee Skinner was the No. 4 recruit in that same class.

SEYMOUR, Tenn. (WATE) - The Seymour Eagles are hoping to build on the foundation they laid last fall in their first season under head coach Caleb Olive.
Seymour finished 5-5, earning the program's most wins since 2021. The Eagles graduated a strong senior class of nearly a dozen players, but they also return plenty of experience, giving the team confidence heading into the new season.
Olive was hired last March, giving him a short offseason to install his system. This year, the Eagles have had a full offseason together and feel more settled in Olive's system.
"Last year, he came in a little late, and we were kind of just playing catch-up a little bit, trying to get everything put in," Seymour senior Corey Helton said. "This year, it's definitely been nice to have him back for the full time."
Senior Grayson Davis said the extra time has helped strengthen the relationship between the players and their coach.

HINTON, Iowa (KCAU) - The Hinton volleyball program has its sights set on reloading ahead of a year full of opportunity.
Hinton finished last season as the Class 2A runner-up with a 30-3 overall record, entering this year with a new look.
The Blackhawks graduated three depth pieces and a trio of starters, including IGHSAU All-State pick and now Creighton freshman Bailey Boeve.
Hinton returns a rising trio featuring sophomore Ellie Friesen and juniors Addison Dunkel and Raelyn Kempema as the program hopes to remain in the mix for a chance to contend this season.
"Once you all get that experience like now, then we all know what it takes to get there and I think that helps, like having us on the team and whatnot," Dunkel said.

Aug. 17—MITCHELL — As the Mitchell High School boys golf program opens its 2026 season, there are opportunities available for the taking at the top of the roster.
Blessed with high levels of continuity and experience in recent years, the Kernels graduated four of the six players they took to the Class AA state tournament in 2025. Of those four, three were regular varsity golfers since they were freshmen.
While such dramatic roster turnover presents a new dynamic for MHS, it's brought a welcome side effect: Elevated competition.
"There are a lot of guys who think they could, and probably will, end up playing in the top six," said MHS coach Ryker Kreutzfeldt. "That just makes everybody better. Competition is the best motivator, and we have plenty of it."
Kreutzfeldt said that from an abnormally large nine-man senior class down to the middle school ranks, there are capable golfers itching to earn their shot at making one of the six varsity roster spots. However, at least two of those top golfers are likely already known, as seniors Asher Dannenbring and Jordan Meyerink are the two returning players from the state tournament roster. Last season, Dannenbring maintained an 18-hole average of 73.1 strokes. Meyerink had an average of 83.3 strokes, but his low round of 74 was fourth-best on the team.

The defense for the Princes was very stingy and tough to score on as they allowed only 15 points per game. That unit will be led by returning linebackers Coley Palmer and Collin Carruthers. Head coach Jon Carruthers says they will be leaning on their linebackers to lead a young unit.
"The linebacker position is kind of the quarterback of the defense and having two guys with experience," said coach Carruthers. "They're multiple years starters, Collin Carruthers and then Coley Palmer. Having those guys be able to call it formations, strengths, things like that, get people set that that takes. A lot of our coaches played there."
"In our conference I feel like a lot of people do a lot of run a lot less than pass," said Palmer. "So, I think our middle linebackers and really all of our linebacker's kind of contain the run game a lot better than most other teams. So, I think that's why they're really good position for us."

That league, 2-5A, looks much the same as it did in 2025, with a couple of alterations. Chaparral has moved up from 4A and Alamogordo has dropped from 6A. Those two replace Santa Teresa and Lovington, who both are now 4A members for at least the next two seasons.
As always, the conversation begins (and frequently ends) with rivals Artesia and Roswell, who have met in each of the last three state **** le games. The Bulldogs came from behind to stun the Coyotes 25-24 in last November's final, and this fall, Artesia is chasing its 34th blue trophy.
"It's up to the rest of us to dethrone those two," Gadsden coach Dino Facio said.
Artesia graduated 35 seniors, and 21 starters, so the Bulldogs, who open against rival Carlsbad, are reloading. But they've got another 35 seniors this season.

Dana White is hyped to see what Bella Mir can do when she fights on the Contender Series this August 25th.
Mir, the daughter of former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir, is an NCAA Division I champion and already holds a 4-0 pro MMA record with three first round submissions. She was originally pushing to enter the UFC at 19 years old, but White convinced her to delay until after going to college. Now she's graduated, and that's bad news for all the women in combat sports.
"She is an absolute freak of nature and incredibly special," White said at the UFC 330 post-fight press conference. "And her goals in combat sports aren't just to be the UFC world champion. She wants to be the Zuffa boxing world champion. She wants to win an Olympic medal. She wants to be the UFC BJJ champion. And, you know, s–t, she might start slapping too. Who knows what she'll do?"
"But yeah, I'm excited about her. I've been excited about her since she graduated from high school," he continued. "When you sit down and you have dinner with Frank and his wife and Bella, they start telling Bella Mir stories, like, 'Where's Bella?' LEOMINSTER ‒ When Jeff Bercume, the CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Fitchburg and Leominster, was looking for a way to celebrate the amount of talented athletes in the North County, creating the North Central Mass. High School Basketball Showcase was an easy decision.
So on Saturday, August 15, many of those athletes took part in a wonderful day of basketball on the outdoor court behind the building.
"We wanted to have an event that brought the community together that put kids at the forefront of the work that we do," said Bercume, who is also an ***** istant baseball coach at St. John's, where he graduated from before playing college baseball at Merrimack University and signing a minor league deal with the Oakland Athletics. "And so with the help of local high school coaches, they nominated their players and we got the best ... to be here today."
So, Bercume and his team surveyed local coaches for talented players and split them up into two teams, Team Fire and Team Ice, each with around 10 players.
"More or less, if the town itself touches Fitchburg or Leominster, we wanted that town to be represented here," Bercume said. "So we just introduced ourselves to those coaches and asked them to nominate their best players, and those players got selected to be on the roster."

If you're a Royals fan of a certain age, the phrase "Lima Time!" will mean something to you. In 2003, the Royals were surprise contenders after getting off to an incredibly hot start. But they needed starting pitching help due to injury and ineffectiveness. Enter José Lima.
Lima was an interesting case; he'd been a 20-game winner as recently as 1999 for the Houston Astros. But he'd also been cut by the Detroit Tigers in 2002 after pitching to a 7.77 ERA in 68.1 innings both as a starter and a reliever. To open the 2003 season, he was pitching in the Independent Atlanta League. His first start for the Royals that year saw him allow 4 runs in 6 innings and take a no-decision with the Royals rallied with two runs in the ninth off of Giants closer Tim Worrell. From then on, it was Lima Time! Lima won 7 straight starts while pitching to a ridiculous 1.65 ERA. I was young and cut off from other Royals fans at the time, but I remember thinking the Royals had found a true ace that would lead them for years to come. With the benefit of hindsight and more advanced ***** ytics than pitcher wins, I can see now that the 3.4% K-BB% he had over that span pointed to oncoming problems. Lima went 1-3 over his final 6 starts with a 10.65 ERA. Sadly, Lima time was not to last.
Why do I bring all this up? Randy Dobnak reminds me a lot of José. I'm older and wiser now, so I can see past the shiny 2.00 ERA to the remarkably similar 3.3% K-BB%. Still, given that the Royals aren't competing for a playoff spot as they were when Lima was around, it's safe to just enjoy the ride of Dobnak time for as long as we can. Maybe it will even last until the end of the season! Hopefully, it lasts at least one more start, tonight.
The Angels will have Reid Detmers on the mound. Reid was considered the 47th-best prospect in MLB when he graduated from the list in 2022. He has a killer curveball and he has shown occasional flashes of brilliance, but he's never been able to fully put things together. He does have a 3.99 ERA going back to the start of last year, and he's been worth 3.0 fWAR this year, but he has been very up-and-down this season and is definitely not the true ace the Angels would like him to be, despite the ridiculous 14-strikeout, 1-hit, 0-walk outing he had against Texas earlier this season.
Unfortunately for the Royals, Detmers is in one of those up spans right this moment. He has a 2.39 ERA while striking out 33 and walking only 8 in his last 5 starts covering 26.1 innings. He's also gone 0-2 over that span because the Angels' offense has been… lackluster.

Lima was an interesting case; he'd been a 20-game winner as recently as 1999 for the Houston Astros. But he'd also been cut by the Detroit Tigers in 2002 after pitching to a 7.77 ERA in 68.1 innings both as a starter and a reliever. To open the 2003 season, he was pitching in the Independent Atlanta League. His first start for the Royals that year saw him allow 4 runs in 6 innings and take a no-decision with the Royals rallied with two runs in the ninth off of Giants closer Tim Worrell. From then on, it was Lima Time! Lima won 7 straight starts while pitching to a ridiculous 1.65 ERA. I was young and cut off from other Royals fans at the time, but I remember thinking the Royals had found a true ace that would lead them for years to come. With the benefit of hindsight and more advanced ***** ytics than pitcher wins, I can see now that the 3.4% K-BB% he had over that span pointed to oncoming problems. Lima went 1-3 over his final 6 starts with a 10.65 ERA. Sadly, Lima time was not to last.
Why do I bring all this up? Randy Dobnak reminds me a lot of José. I'm older and wiser now, so I can see past the shiny 2.00 ERA to the remarkably similar 3.3% K-BB%. Still, given that the Royals aren't competing for a playoff spot as they were when Lima was around, it's safe to just enjoy the ride of Dobnak time for as long as we can. Maybe it will even last until the end of the season! Hopefully, it lasts at least one more start, tonight.

After leading the Bulldogs to their first state championship appearance, St. Ursula quarterback Penelope Bolinger has been named the 2026 Bengals Girls Flag Football Player of the Year.
The Cincinnati Bengals honored Bolinger in a ceremony during halftime of their preseason opener on Aug. 13, 2026. She was surprised with a personalized Bengals jersey to commemorate the accomplishment. Bolinger was joined by the rest of the Bulldogs flag football team to celebrate.
Bolinger, a 2026 St. Ursula graduate, was one of the top quarterbacks in the state last season. She finished the year ranked No. 1 in Ohio by MaxPreps with 312 completions for 3,394 passing yards and 61 touchdowns. St. Ursula's team captain was also named to the Enquirer's all-city first team. The Bulldogs finished as runners-up in the Cincinnati regional tournament at Paycor Stadium, earning a trip to the Ohio High School Athletic ***** ociation's first sanctioned tournament.
Bolinger was a dedicated multisport athlete and leader at St. Ursula. She helped the Bulldogs win the Division II state volleyball ***** le in 2024 and committed to continue her volleyball career at Wittenberg University. Bolinger volunteered over 25 hours at youth flag football camps, mentoring fifth through eighth grade athletes and helping grow the nascent sport. She also graduated with a 3.8 GPA.
After the award presentation, Bolinger took the field one final time as St. Ursula competed against Mount Notre Dame and Badin during halftime. The exhibitions are part of the Bengals commitment to growing the sport; the NFL franchise also provides local schools with equipment and training and hosts the annual regional tournament at Paycor Stadium.

The Washington Commanders continue to churn the bottom of the roster ahead of this week's preseason opener. After signing four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver last week, the Commanders signed three veteran offensive linemen for depth. On Monday, Washington added defensive tackle Byron Cowart.
After Tuesday's practice, the Commanders revealed another signing: linebacker Curtis Jacobs.
Jacobs, a 6-foot-1, 243-pound linebacker from Penn State, went undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft. He signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent, but was waived during final cuts. The New England Patriots claimed Jacobs off waivers, which is where he spent his rookie season, appearing in nine games and recording four tackles.
After being released last March, the Tennessee ******* ans signed Jacobs, but he was again waived during final cuts. He signed with the New York Giants practice squad, was waived, and then re-signed with the ******* ans practice squad. He appeared in three games for Tennessee last fall.
Jacobs is familiar with the area, having graduated from the McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Maryland.

BYU receivers coach and passing game coordinator Fesi Sitake has a son whose middle name is Legend.
That son now wants to be called by his middle name.
Why?
Because there's a newcomer to the football team, a freshman receiver, named Legend Glasker who just might be the next big thing in Provo. Glasker, a three-star recruit (247Sports) who graduated from nearby Lehi High last December so he could enroll early at BYU, was one of the breakout stars in spring camp and has picked up where he left off this month in preseason training camp.
Sitake said Monday that Glasker has "solidified his spot" with the first-team offense, along with Oregon transfer Kyler Kasper and Jojo Phillips, the redshirt junior who has shown flashes of brilliance but a lack of consistency, partly due to injury, in three seasons in the program.

As another Georgia high school football season kicks off, championship expectations, national recruits and marquee matchups once again dominate the conversation across the Peach State. From powerhouse programs loaded with Division I talent to rising contenders looking to crash the ******* le picture, there is no shortage of storylines heading into the 2026 season.
1. Buford Wolves: Until you knock them off, it is hard not to put Buford on top. The Wolves know how to win. They expect to win. Buford lost a lot, especially at the skill positions, but new names will step in, led by quarterback DJ Hunter, they will play a tough schedule and be ready for December when that time comes.
2. Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets: Thomas County Central may have been playing the best football in Georgia when the season ended last year. Some key contributors graduated, but return many key contributors, and when all is said and done in December, it would be surprising to see the Yellow Jackets hoisting up the trophy for a third time in four years.
3. Creekside Seminoles: Maurice Dixon and Creekside had the perfect 15-0 season a year ago and broke records while doing so. Their offense scored 845 points in 15 games, so can they repeat? The Seminoles are the one to beat. They lost some key players, but 15 starters return, and it is a good mix of linemen and skill guys. The move up to 6A will be something to watch.
4. Gainesville Red Elephants: Gainesville has a new head coach in Santavious Bryant. He won a state ******* le at Grayson in his first year as the head coach there in 2023. Don't be surprised if he leads the Red Elephants to the same accomplishment this season. The Red Elephants have been knocking on the door, and they have the pieces to compete for a ******* le again in 2026.

Staunton enters the season with some unproven players on its roster. A lot of experience graduated a season ago and Coach Michael Bell and his staff must find a way to replace those players.
"It's a young team," Bell said. "They're eager. It's an athletic team. I've just got to find a way to put the pieces together."
Staunton graduated 17 seniors out of a 38-player roster from a team that finished 4-6 and missed the playoffs a year ago. That's nearly 45% of the team gone.
Bell chooses to look at that as a glass half full.
"When you lose that many it gives other kids an opportunity," said Bell, who enters his fifth season as head coach. "They're like, 'Hey, I might get a chance to show'...when it's open and they see that opportunity it brings competition."
