It was a trip that Beijing’s vast surveillance apparatus didn’t miss. Now her family face the prospect of losing their government benefits for splurging on “high-end consumption.”
The incident has sparked massive debate across Chinese social media over whether those receiving benefits are also entitled to small luxuries. It’s also a reminder of the staggering extent of the Chinese government’s surveillance system, one turbocharged by advances in AI and the embrace of digital payments.
The story first surfaced in a post on popular site Red Note in early September by a user who said they were the young woman’s cousin.
The woman, surnamed Huang, had “worked hard doing manual labor and saved up from the subsidies” to pay for the concert ticket and expenses of traveling to Hong Kong, around 235 miles (380 kilometers) from her home in Jiangxi province, the post said.

TOKYO (AP) — **** an's air force said one of its long-distance surveillance drones is believed to have crashed into the sea during a flight Tuesday off the country's northwestern coast.
There were no immediate details on the nature of the mission of the uncrewed RQ-4B aircraft, also known as Global Hawk. So far, there was no indication of foul play, but officials said the cause of the presumed crash was under investigation.
The Air Self-Defense Force said the drone had trouble connecting with a communication device about one and a half hours after taking off from the Misawa Air Base. Three minutes later, it disappeared from the radar and was last seen 50 kilometers (31 miles) off the coast of Tottori, the ASDF said.
Later Tuesday, a fighter jet and a **** an Coast Guard patrol ship spotted debris believed to be from the Global Hawk. After examining photos of the debris, the ASDF said the drone is believed to have crashed just after disappearing from the radar.
The cause of the Global Hawk's presumed crash is still under investigation, the ASDF said. There have been no reports of injury or damage related to the crash.

A trade group representing American automakers is urging Congress to permanently bar the sale of Chinese vehicles in the U.S.
In a letter to senior lawmakers, the Alliance for Automotive Innovation on Thursday called on them to "enact a permanent ban on the sale, import and manufacture of Chinese connected vehicles, hardware and software" in the U.S., citing China's alleged unfair trade practices, intellectual property theft and pattern of surveillance.
"This behavior is a feature of the Chinese approach and especially acute when it comes to China's strategy to dominate global automotive manufacturing and critical supply chains," wrote the group's president and CEO, John Bozzella.
Bozzella also said that non-Chinese automakers are unfairly disadvantaged by China's industrial and manufacturing policy, which the car industry group said threatens to undermine the U.S. automotive manufacturing sector.

STOCKHOLM, Aug 28 (Reuters) - Sweden's military will participate in the surveillance and protection of Finland's territory with Gripen ‌fighter jets and corvette warship, at least until the ‌end of 2026, Finland's defence forces said on Friday.
"The Swedish equipment strengthens air surveillance in particular, releasing the Finnish Defence Forces' own resources for repelling violations and incidents, if need be," Finland's military said in a statement.
The neighbouring countries, NATO's two newest members, already have ‌a close bilateral defence ⁠cooperation. Finland has a 1,340-kilometre (833-mile) long eastern border with Russia.
"Sweden has responded to a request from Finland ⁠to strengthen its air defence due to the deteriorating security situation," Sweden's Defence Minister Pal Jonson told Reuters, adding that the Swedish armed forces may under the agreement, if necessary, help Finland repel ‌violations of Finnish territory.
Besides fighter jets and vessels with drone combat capabilities, Sweden may also contribute ground-based anti-drone systems, he said.

The misdemeanor charges against Packers running back Josh Jacobs arise from a domestic incident. And a portion of the incident apparently was captured by the surveillance system at Jacobs's house.
Via the incident report posted by Matt Schneidman of The Athletic, "Jacobs grabbed [the victim] and threw her to the ground and she struck her head, suffering an injury. Jacobs then took her phone from her while she was on the ground. [She] laid on the ground for a while and then struggled to walk back into the house." The incident report strongly suggests that this altercation appears on the video.
As everyone learned nearly 12 years ago in the Ray Rice case, if video exists the video eventually will emerge. And seeing the video will spark a much stronger action than knowing the video exists.
It could be enough to prompt the NFL to place Jacobs on paid leave, even though the charges are misdemeanors and not felonies. Depending on the specific content of the video, the Packers could also release him.
For now, the Packers have issued a predictably perfunctory statement.

The Green Bay Packers could be without their starting running back for a while this season.
Josh Jacobs was arrested in May after a domestic incident and on Thursday the Brown County District Attorney charged him with misdemeanor battery and criminal damage to property, according to Tom Pelissero of The Ringer. He originally booked on five charges.
The incident report, shared by Matt Schneidman of The Athletic, has some disturbing details. It says that authorities have surveillance video from Jacobs' garage, and according to the incident report the video shows Jacobs throwing his girlfriend to the ground. She hit her head and suffered an injury, the report said. Then Jacobs took her phone while she was on the ground, and she struggled to get back into the house.

WASHINGTON, Aug 25 (Reuters) - Republican and Democratic lawmakers on Tuesday called on the Trump administration to bar American citizens and businesses ‌from supporting Chinese and Russian civilian intelligence and security agencies.
Congress approved a ‌law in 2018 banning Americans from providing support to foreign military intelligence agencies but leaving the door open to such aid for similar civilian-led organizations. In 2019, Reuters revealed the United Arab Emirates had hired over a dozen former U.S. intelligence operatives to hack dissidents, journalists, and Americans, shining a spotlight on the issue.
Rules implementing a 2022 congressional measure ‌to bolster controls have not ⁠yet been finalized, leaving "glaring loopholes that harm U.S. national security and foreign policy interests," Democratic Senator Ron Wyden and Republican John ⁠Cornyn wrote in a letter addressed to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
"Foreign intelligence agencies in many countries can still legally hire consultants in the United States and buy advanced U.S. surveillance, cyber, and artificial intelligence technology, for use in their intelligence operations to target Americans, and ‌operate against American national security and foreign policy interests," the senators wrote in the letter dated Tuesday.

John Cusack has publicly backed Mark Ruffalo in the actor's increasingly heated fight with Paramount Skydance over its proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery.
Cusack quote-posted Ruffalo's response to the company over the weekend and added just three words: "Solidarity - well said." Paramount had said the actor invoked "antisemitic tropes" while arguing against the deal.

Miami running back Jordan Lyle was estimated to be driving 130 mph while attempting to flee a traffic stop in South Florida last month, according to a probable cause affidavit released on Tuesday, via the Miami Herald.
Lyle was arrested last week on charges of aggravated fleeing and eluding law enforcement, each of which are felony complaints in Florida. He is also facing a misdemeanor complaint of reckless driving.
He turned himself into the Sunrise Police Department on Thursday after an arrest warrant was issued. He was then released on bond that same day.
According to the report, Lyle was spotted driving north on the Sawgrass Expressway shortly after 7 p.m. on July 10 and was clocked by an officer driving 92 mph. The speed limit in the area is just 65 mph. When the officer tried to pull Lyle over, Lyle allegedly sped up and got to as fast as 130 mph while making "rapid, abrupt and unsafe lane changes to maneuver between vehicles." At one point, Lyle allegedly made a U-turn from a through lane after exiting the expressway.
Eventually, the officer turned off his lights and sirens and let him go to avoid further danger. An investigation later determined that the car was registered to Lyle, and it was linked to him via his parents' home surveillance system. Police spoke to Lyle via FaceTime on July 15, and he arrived at the police department with a lawyer to give a sworn statement later that day.

It rests on judgment, character and the sense that he takes serious things seriously. When a man like that signs a reported 10-year, $400 million deal with Li-Ning, he is not just changing brands. He is lending his good name to a company shadowed by one of the great human rights scandals of our time.
Sports at their best can do something rare. They can take fame, which is often fleeting and shallow, and turn it toward service. They can show that athletic greatness and moral witness do not have to live in separate worlds. That is why decisions like this matter. The larger the platform, the larger the responsibility.
Curry's decision is so troubling because it places the honor attached to athletic excellence beside a system of coercion. The U.S. Department of Labor states that since 2016 the Chinese Communist Party has subjected Uyghurs and other mostly Muslim minorities in Xinjiang "to genocide, state-imposed forced labor, and crimes against humanity." It describes labor transfers, surveillance, indoctrination and coercive factory work as part of a broad machinery of control.
These are not careless accusations. They are specific charges documented by the U.S. government and corroborated by international investigators.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal officials involved in the prosecution of James Comey misled judges, submitted false statements and withheld key facts during the course of the investigation, according to new defense filings that seek the dismissal of a case charging the former FBI director with threatening President Donald Trump on social media.
Lawyers for Comey made the allegations of misconduct in motions filed late Tuesday that also call the case a vindictive and selective prosecution, request access to transcripts of grand jury proceedings to expose what they say are "irregularities" in how the indictment was secured, and describe "unlawful" surveillance of Comey by the Secret Service.
Taken together, the new motions, along with an earlier one this week that called Comey's social media post protected speech and not a threat, represent a multiprong defense effort to dismantle a case that defense lawyers say exemplifies a Trump administration retribution campaign targeting one of the president's most vocal critics.

DiCarlo, 35, of Middletown, was arrested after Middletown Police Officer James Courtney responded to the ShopRite located at 1500 Route 35 at 5:16 p.m. on Friday due to a report of a female stealing on the premises, according to the Middletown Police report and the body camera video released by Transparency Bodycam.
DiCarlo has more than 30,900 followers on her Instagram account jgloskincaree, where she describes herself as a "Celebrity Medical Esthetician," business owner, a "Mom of 5," and a "FireWife". Her posts contain information about her skincare routine, her five children (a baby boy that she claims to have conceived via in vitro fertilization after five girls), and her firefighter husband who works with the FDNY.
According to the criminal complaint, store employees said that DiCarlo tried to leave the store with stolen merchandise. The value of the items was estimated at $548.80. Based on evidence from store surveillance video and the store's decision to press charges against her, DiCarlo was arrested, handcuffed, and transported to Middletown Township Police headquarters. She was charged with third-degree shoplifting and released on her own recognizance until her court appearance.
During the investigation, it was found that DiCarlo had committed similar crimes on May 8, May 17, and May 31, with a total value of the items of $1,940.20. Thus, the total estimated value for all four incidents became $2,489.
