WASHINGTON, Nov 4 (Reuters) - The US midterm election landslide that gives Democrats control of Congress starting in January is fueling questions about the longevity of the Supreme Court's two eldest justices, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, and the durability of its conservative majority.
As Republicans prepare to cede control of the Senate to Democrats for the next two years or more, some conservative commentators already are expressing concerns about the health prospects of Thomas, 78, and Alito, 76, placing renewed focus on their continued service on the top US judicial body.
The US Constitution assigns the Senate the power to confirm a president's judicial nominations. With a Senate majority, Democrats can block any nominations that Republican President Donald Trump would make to fill potential Supreme Court vacancies, just as Republicans blocked Democratic President Barack Obama from filling one in 2016.
Thomas has given no public indication of wanting to step down. Alito said last month he would remain for the duration of the current nine-month term, which began in October, even if Democrats were to retake the Senate. On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Nov. 3, 2026, Eaton (NYSE:ETN) raised its full-year 2026 organic revenue growth guidance, which excludes acquisitions and currency shifts, to a midpoint of 14%.
Management also raised its full-year adjusted earnings per share guidance, a profit measure that excludes one-time items and non-cash expenses, to a midpoint of $13.75. Expanding factory capacity allows the company to convert a record backlog, which represents unfilled customer orders, into long-term margin expansion.
Three things management said stand out.
Eaton restructured its international operations early and expanded its product lineup in high-demand markets like data centers. Electrical Global, the division serving international power markets, sharply accelerated its organic growth by gaining share with the same global customers that Eaton serves in North America.
We now expect organic growth about 16% in 2026, well above our prior guidance, and more than double the 7% we delivered in 2025. This acceleration is no accident. It reflects deliberate strategic moves we made over the past few years.

PETOSKEY — Lily Flynn could have had a totally different approach to her senior season on the volleyball court.
An outside hitter for Petoskey throughout her career, Flynn was asked to change positions, leaving behind the glory of racking up kills for the back row as a libero.
She would also spend most of the season surrounded by players she didn't grow up playing with, as freshmen and sophomores filled the court, including a pair that would step into that outside job.
"I kept asking, 'Yes, no? Are you good with this?' And she was," Petoskey coach Erin Luckhardt said. "That's not a role that she's played before. She's played back row, but playing back row exclusively is different for her and she's stepped into it and done a great job."
Flynn's attitude to change and an up and down 2026 campaign wasn't the kind you might expect.

Ford has now announced the cars, the colors, the concert, the cable channel and the charity fund for its Veterans Day Classic at Daytona. What it hasn't announced, at least in the material it has published so far, is how long the race runs or how a winner gets picked. That gap is the story, and it's why the lineup tells you more than the poster does.
The event is set for Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Daytona International Speedway, three days after the Cup Series finale at Homestead (here's how that November calendar stacks up). AUBURN — A sudden addition to Auburn basketball's staff appears unlikely, at least for the time being, as head coach Steven Pearl addressed the firing of general manager Brian Kloman following the Tigers' 80-68 win in an exhibition against Samford on Thursday, Oct. 29, at Neville Arena.
Auburn's coaching staff is taking a by-committee approach to general manager duties, Pearl said. He did not provide a timeline for an eventual general manager hire, nor did he expressly state the program would look for someone to fill that role.
"As a staff, (we will) just kind of go through some of the things that Brian (Kloman) was doing and try and divvy up some of those responsibilities, and collectively as a group, work through those things together," Pearl said.
Brett Whiteside, listed as Auburn's executive senior **** ociate athletics director, was name-dropped by Pearl as someone who is expected to help the program amid its general manager change. According to his staff biography, Whiteside "plays a key role in shaping the student-athlete experience through revenue-sharing operations, NIL strategy, education, and compliance."
The circumstance arises after Auburn fired Kloman on Monday, in the aftermath of international signee Mantas Rubstavicius voluntarily dismissing his eligibility lawsuit against the NCAA.

The Kansas City Royals made their first big offseason move on Thursday by cutting ties with closer Carlos Estévez. The team declined his $13 million club option, which means he hits the open market. He had Bills Mafia to thank for that.
"It's so hard in these away games, which feel like home games, once you hear the crowd go crazy, you're like, 'I don't know if it's a touchdown, I don't know if it's an interception,'" Allen said with a smile Sunday night following the Buffalo Bills' latest nutty victory, a 33-30 shootout over the Las Vegas Raiders.
Oh, it was a touchdown, one of the highlight plays of a season that is already filled with them for Allen and the Buffalo offense.
"That was a show, for sure," Bills center Connor McGovern said. "That was one of those, I stopped, I was like, holy (crap), he just did that."

The lawmakers, writing to the FEC as well as the Justice and Homeland Security departments, urged the agencies to coordinate on "AI-driven threats to election integrity" and to press AI companies on their safeguards. Their concerns come as a quarter of likely voters use AI tools daily and at least 38% have gotten information about candidates or voting from AI search summaries, according to a September survey released by the American ****** ociation of Political Consultants Foundation.
But later that month, FEC Commissioner Shana Broussard, a Democrat, wrote back with a blunt answer: the agency couldn't help. With only two of its six commissioner seats filled, the FEC "cannot proceed," she wrote, according to documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act.
Broussard signed the letter as an individual commissioner. Without a quorum — the four members needed out of a total of six — she could not under federal law even speak for the agency.

McDonald's is facing a federal lawsuit that alleges its AI-enhanced pricing tool violates antitrust laws because it shares nonpublic data with franchisees who might be competing in the same market.
The lawsuit, which was filed Friday in Illinois, said McDonald's pricing tool uses artificial intelligence to collect data that competing franchises wouldn't normally share, like store-level sales. Using it in highway vehicles has been illegal, carrying penalties for tax evasion, according to CNBC.
According to the White House, the order instructs the Treasury Secretary to hold off on collecting federal excise taxes on highway use of dyed diesel between October 5 and December 31, 2026, and to do so without charging interest or imposing penalties. The Treasury is also directed to direct the Internal Revenue Service not to impose penalties for on-road use of dyed diesel during that period. The order further instructs officials to explore pathways, including legislation, to eliminate the deferred tax obligations entirely.
The White House projected that a trucker who tops off an 18-wheeler's tank with 250 gallons stands to save over $100 on a single fill-up, provided the trucker's state suspends its own diesel tax as well. On top of the federal levy, each state levies its own diesel excise tax, and those state-level taxes average out to 35.5 cents per gallon, according to CNN.
The order also directs the Secretary of Agriculture to coordinate with agricultural cooperatives and rural fuel distributors to ensure adequate dyed diesel distribution in high-demand areas, and the Secretary of Transportation to engage with state governments and industry stakeholders.
