The Timberwolves feature plenty of quality and depth after they placed third in the FHSAA State Finals. Florida State signee Joshua Hicks (14:49) and returnee Jonathan Kiros (15:21) placed third and fourth respectively.

Last week's kickoff classics were but the appetizer for the 2026 high school football season. Now Florida can dig into the main course with Week 1 of the FHSAA schedule!
The action got started Thursday night featuring Pensacola Catholic blanking Milton and Columbus blowing out Miami Southridge. Tonight's big games include West Boca vs. American Heritage, both of whom enter as back-to-back state champions. Mandarin and McArthur, ranked 17th and 18th in the USA TODAY Florida Super 25 respectively, meet up in Hollywood.
Other top-flight teams are opening their seasons out of state. IMG Academy are in Utah, Venice heads to Georgia, and Miami Central and (Orlando) Jones both kick off the campaign across the country in California.

Northview head coach Doug Vickery estimates he made about "six or seven" different schedules for the Chiefs this fall.
While many Rural classification schools decided to join the Sunshine State Athletic **** ociation before going to the FHSAA's new Independent League, Northview remained a full member of the **** ociation.
That means the Chiefs will play in District 1-1A with Baker, Blountstown, Holmes County and Port St. Joe this fall after the FHSAA merged the 1A and Rural classifications in late January. Central and Jay will play independent schedules this fall.
"It was just a constant shuffling of teams," Vickery said.
The moves leaves Northview in a challenging district not just for competition, but for travel too. Baker is the only team within an hour of Bratt, and the Chiefs will have to travel over two hours for district games against Blountstown and Holmes County.

After eight long months, high school football has finally returned to Florida! Never mind that the kickoff classics won't count in the record books.
Some of the games on the schedule would fit right in with the state's first Open Division state playoffs. The biggest matchup pits St. Thomas Aquinas, the No. 1 team in the preseason Super 25 rankings, against fellow defending state champion Cardinal Mooney. Both start the season in the top eight in the MaxPreps rankings, which determine who would play in the new top-tier playoffs.
Preseason games began Thursday night, headlined by Buchholz vs. Lake Mary. The Friday night action also features West Boca vs. Carol City, two teams also in the Open Division field as the 2026 season gets rolling. And while the FHSAA is still in the preseason until next week, we do get regular-season action from the SSAA.

We compiled the schedule of every football program in the area, from Bell to Williston.
Many of our programs have moved to the Sunshine State Athletic ***** ociation (SSAA), which begins its season on Aug. 14. That Friday is the preseason game for FHSAA squads. Their season begins a week later, Aug. 21.
Each team’s schedule comes from MaxPreps, and asterisks are district games. All times are in eastern.

STARKVILLE — Mississippi State baseball signee Denton Lord announced he will play for the Bulldogs in 2027 instead of signing an MLB contract.
The announcement came on Instagram just after the fifth round of the 2026 MLB Draft concluded on July 12.
The pitcher from Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, was ranked as the No. 80 prospect in the draft.
The 6-foot-8, 220-pound Lord played for South Walton, which won the FHSAA Class 3A championship. His fastball sits around 94 mph but can reach 98 mph. He also throws a curveball in the upper 70s and an occasional changeup in the low 80s.
Lord flipped his commitment from Florida to Mississippi State in November before coach Brian O'Connor's first season.

EA Sports' player ratings for College Football 27 have sparked plenty of debate, and one Florida State speedster may have a case for being rated even higher.
Seminoles wide receiver Micahi Danzy received a 95 speed rating in College Football 27, the highest speed rating on Florida State's roster. That number still places Danzy among the fastest players in the game, but his track résumé makes the rating an interesting talking point.
Danzy is not just fast by football standards. He was a 2025 ACC champion in the men's 400 meters and 4x100 relay, while also earning first-team All-ACC honors during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. He also set the ACC meet record and Florida State school record in the 400 meters with a time of 44.38 seconds at the 2025 ACC Outdoor Championships.
His speed credentials go back even further. Before arriving at Florida State, Danzy won the 400 meters and earned silver in the 200 meters at the 2023 USATF National Junior Olympics. He was also an FHSAA 2A state champion in both the 200 and 400 meters in 2023 and 2024. His listed personal bests include 10.57 seconds in the 100, 20.88 in the 200, and 45.88 in the 400 before FSU.
That elite speed has also translated to the football field. Danzy is coming off a breakout season that established him as one of the most explosive players in the country. His 21.1 yards per reception were the 4th-most in the country and give the Seminoles a different kind of weapon heading into the 2026 season.

Two Volusia County athletes are making the journey to the Pacific Northwest to participate in USA Track and Field’s Under-20 Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon, beginning on June 18.
Former DeLand pole vaulter and current Florida International freshman Kylie Neira and recent New Smyrna Beach graduate Brison Sullivan will compete in the event to potentially earn spots in the U20 World Championships in August.
Neira graduated in 2025 as Volusia County’s only pole vault state champion since the turn of the millennium, doing so twice in Class 4A. She’s already made history at FIU with a 4.22-meter vault that set the Panthers’ freshman record and was the third-highest in program history.
Sullivan will begin the first part of his summer break competing in the javelin after finishing high school. Sullivan won the Class 3A javelin championship with an FHSAA-record throw of 65.21 meters, placing him ninth in the United States among high schoolers.
Neira and Sullivan will compete simultaneously at 3 p.m. Eastern on the meet’s opening day.
