CHICAGO — Pete Crow-Armstrong's walk-off home run in the opener of the City Series was still the talk of the town heading into Game 2 Tuesday night at Wrigley Field.
Chicago White Sox manager Will Venable's decision to pitch to Crow-Armstrong in the 10th inning was debated ad nauseam on talk radio and the internet, and Venable reiterated Tuesday that he was at peace with the move.
"PCA's a really special player, and yeah, he's scary, but so is (Seiya) Suzuki, you know what I mean?" he said.
Meanwhile, Cubs fans and the media debated whether the epic night sealed the National League Most Valuable Player award for PCA in his duel with Los Angeles Dodgers unicorn Shohei Ohtani.
"That's for you guys," Crow-Armstrong said. "When you play a game like we did tonight, that's all the fun I need in my life ever."

What is a conflict of interest anymore when it comes to play-by-play broadcasting? Last year, this was one of the more debated topics in sports media. Now, it has new life. Friday, the NFL announced that the "Tom Brady Rules" will also apply to ESPN Monday Night Football ****** yst Troy Aikman.
Tom Brady is a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders. He also is the lead ****** yst for FOX Sports NFL coverage. The rules, at first, were simple. He couldn't enter another team's facility or observe its practices. He also couldn't publicly criticize officials or other teams, and he couldn't attend broadcast production meetings either in person or virtually. Last year, good behavior by Brady — and likely some pressure from FOX Sports — relaxed the rules on Brady. This year, the rules extend to Troy Aikman.
But the NFL's explanation for why the extension to Aikman makes me wonder who these rules protect in the first place.
This past offseason, Aikman ****** isted the Miami Dolphins with hiring a new general manager and head coach. During a podcast episode featuring former WFAA sports anchor Dale Hansen, Aikman said his role with the Dolphins was approved by Commissioner Roger Goodell. He has also stated that he sees a day when he could be working for an NFL franchise in some capacity.
The two situations are different. Brady owns a minority stake, so he's financially invested in the success of a franchise. Aikman loaned his services but doesn't have a financial stake in the Miami Dolphins' success.

The most debated topic in all of football, or so it seems, is the competition for the Browns quarterback position. Saturday was another step toward answering that question.
In the Browns' preseason loss to the Bears, both players got an opportunity to show where they are. The Bears didn't play any of their starters in the first half, and in the second half, the Browns were down a lot of their depth pieces.
The playing field was never level; even so, there are some important takeaways.
Deshaun Watson was scheduled to get the entire first half, and he got off on a really strong start. After Cleveland went three-and-out in their first possession, the offense opened up.
Watson showed some arm strength, connecting well with KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston. One of his best plays of the first half came on 3rd and four; he checked into a nice man-beating concept and delivered a great throw to Harold Fannin Jr. against the blitz, but Fannin dropped it.

RENTON, Wash. — DeMarcus Lawrence debated carefully whether to return for the 2026 NFL season. In his 12th year, the Seattle Seahawks edge rusher had stayed healthy enough to play every game, forced six fumbles between the regular season and playoffs, and won a Super Bowl.
Should he hang it up?
"I'm doing everything that a player can wish for," Lawrence told Yahoo Sports in a sit-down interview from training camp. "So now do I cut that light off and turn the lights [off]? … I ain't think it was time to hang it up yet."
But with six children and his wife, Sasha, back in Dallas, the Dallas Cowboys' 2014 second-round draft pick says he has just one season left.
"This will be my last year," Lawrence said. "Through the grace of God, I'm able to play another year and soak it all up one more good time before I hang it up."

Myles Lewis-Skelly is already a hot topic and the season isn't officially under way.
The 19-year-old's long-term future at **** nal has been debated since he slipped down the pecking order last season - behind Riccardo Calafiori and Piero Hincapie - as **** nal's third choice left-back.
In his breakthrough season in 2024-25, he quickly developed into one of the best young full-backs in the Premier League, which led to him earning a place in the England squad and becoming the youngest man to score on his Three Lions debut.
The following summer, the academy graduate was rewarded with a new five-year contract. But last season was more difficult.
Arsenal had considered listening to offers for Lewis-Skelly, with club sources indicating in April they would look to recoup a minimum combined £100m for Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri.

The college football season is approaching, with Week Zero set to kick off in a matter of weeks. However, the ongoing debates surrounding the sport have not ceased. That includes discussions about College Football Playoff expansion and the Protect College Sports Act.
The bill failed to receive a vote in a timely manner and is now being pushed to a later date in 2026. However, another issue could be on the horizon that would directly impact the way college football conferences are structured. If the Protect College Sports Act passes, conference alignment could descend into another round of chaos.
According to a Yahoo Sports report, the bill would provide a 180-day grace period from the date it is signed into law. What would that grace period allow? Schools could leave their conference without being subjected to a five-year probationary period.
MORE: 25 must-watch offensive NFL draft prospects during 2026 college football season
"According to the amendment, if a power league school wants to move to another power conference, the school can avoid the five-year probationary period of operating as an independent if it withdraws from its league within 180 days of the bill's enactment. The expansion provision in the bill is one of the most hotly debated and divisive concepts. Multiple ACC schools are against the concept and have lobbied their lawmakers for changes to it." Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports reported.

Ayrton Senna is, for many fans, an untouchable figure – three world **** les, 41 race victories, and a driving talent that still gets debated three decades after his death at Imola in 1994. In a 2009 Autosport poll of 217 current and former Formula 1 drivers, Senna came out on top as the greatest the sport has ever seen. Tiff Needell, a former F1 driver and longtime television presenter, would like a word with whoever wrote that ballot.
Speaking on the Cars & Money podcast, Needell was clear on how he felt about the driver: "He could not be the world's greatest driver because he used his car as a weapon. I mean, to take off Alain Prost to win a world championship, he just wiped him out."
The incident in question was the 1990 **** anese Grand Prix, where Senna drove into Prost at the first corner, eliminating both cars and securing his second **** le in the process. Prost has claimed Senna confessed to making the maneuver intentionally, both in public statements and in private.
For Needell, the comparison point isn't Lewis Hamilton or Max Verstappen. It's Jim Clark, the Scottish driver who dominated the mid-1960s and won two championships.
"Jim Clark, the world's greatest driver, would never have done that," Needell argued on the podcast. It's a deliberately high bar, and one that's hard to argue against – Clark's record is essentially spotless in this regard.

The Dodgers don't care about your feelings.
Nor should they.
Baseball's unapologetic behemoth got even more imposing, infuriating and inevitable late Saturday night. Tarik Skubal, he of the back-to-back AL Cy Young awards, is now a Los Angeles Dodger. The rich, once again, have gotten richer.
It's a fascinating, anticlimactic conclusion to what had been one of the more debated deadline sweepstakes for quite some time. Skubal's Detroit Tigers tossed fuel on the fire by failing to turn a disappointing season around. By the back end of last week, a trade appeared increasingly likely. And in the end, the game's evil empire won the bidding for the game's best hurler.
As one team employee put it to me last week: "If Andrew [Friedman] wants Skubal, he'll get Skubal." Turns out, Los Angeles' top baseball exec did indeed want the sport's most effective pitcher.

Health policy has quietly become a stock-moving variable in 2026, and the figures are significant enough to matter. Approximately 2.6 million Americans discontinued ACA marketplace coverage this year after increased pandemic-era subsidies ended at the end of 2025, with health policy experts predicting that total enrollment would decrease to between 16.5 million and 17.5 million by year-end. Meanwhile, the Urban Institute has projected that 4.8 million more people will be uninsured in 2026 as a direct consequence of the lapsed subsidies, with certain HealthCare.gov-reliant states witnessing enrollment losses of 20% or more.
Whether this translates into fewer elective medical treatments is now a hotly debated topic in the healthcare industry, with Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ:ISRG) emerging as the evident casualty. The company's shares plunged more than 12% before the bell on July 17, despite Intuitive maintaining its global procedure-growth prediction for its da Vinci surgical robots. Instead, the selloff was driven by the company's own admission that changes in insurance coverage could impact demand.
US da Vinci procedure growth slowed to roughly 12% in the second quarter, down from where Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ:ISRG) expected to be at the beginning of the year, with a focus on surgeries that patients may defer. On the July 16 call, CEO David Rosa told ******* ysts that customer conversations indicated that fluctuating patient coverage and premium dynamics affect "when patients seek care," as opposed to if they seek it at all.
That reaction came at an awkward time, as a highly public disagreement was already taking place in the sector. Abbott, a major medical device and diagnostics manufacturer, had argued recently that blaming industry-wide procedure weakness on ACA disenrollment was a "flawed ******* umption." HCA Healthcare, the largest for-profit hospital operator in the United States, took the opposite stance, warning earlier of lower surgical demand and an increase in uninsured patients when pandemic-era subsidies expired.
Intuitive's own results now appear to support the HCA side of the argument, at least in procedures when patients can choose to delay. Stifel's response immediately reflected the tension: the firm reduced its price objective to $550 from $670 on July 17 while keeping a Buy rating on the company's shares, despite Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ:ISRG) exceeding expectations in revenue, earnings, system placements, and procedure growth in the same quarter. Both US procedure and installed-base growth have slowed since the 2020-2021 COVID era, with management blaming the slowdown on ACA disenrollment and the basic law of large numbers as the installed base matures.

Five-star running back David Gabriel Georges has something to say after his high-profile recruitment that ultimately resulted in him choosing Tennessee over Ohio State. To say that it was a hotly debated and fiery recruiting process is probably not doing it justice, and Gabriel Georges would like things to be better for others in the same position in the future, it appears.
There were some premature reports, rumors being reported as fact, and some pretty nasty comments made by fan bases throughout the process, and whether you like it or not, the words Gabriel Georges posted on his X account Thursday might be worth considering. Here's what he had to say in his post on social media:
"First and foremost, I give all glory to God for His countless blessings and for faithfully guiding me throughout this journey. Without Him, I wouldn't be where I am today, wrote Gabriel Georges.
"I also want to express my sincere gratitude to my family, friends, coaches, teammates, mentors, and everyone who has supported and encouraged me along the way. Your belief in me, your guidance, and your unwavering support have meant more than words can express, and I will always be grateful.
"I also feel it is important to address something. What should have been one of the most meaningful and joyful moment of my life has, at times, been overshadowed by negative media coverage, false narratives, and unfair ***** umptions about both my character and my family. I understand the passion, excitement, and pride that college football inspires, and I have great respect for every fan base and every program involved in this process. Speaker Mike Johnson doesn't think members of Congress should be romantically involved with House staffers — even if the staffers don't work for them.
Johnson weighed in during a news conference Tuesday on what has been a hotly debated topic on Capitol Hill: Should members of Congress be allowed to pursue relationships with staffers outside of their own offices? Johnson said it's an easy call for him: They should not.
"I can't believe it would be acceptable in any situation," Johnson said of lawmakers dating any staffers in the House. "I think we should as a bare minimum in Congress have rules and traditions that are adhered to in corporate America, so that is an easy one for me."
Johnson's comments come as efforts to reduce harassment on Capitol Hill are ramping up and as a bipartisan working group is targeting reforms aimed at making Congress a safer and more professional environment for women.

Many members argued in the days after the resignations of Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell and Republican Rep. Apple recently filed a trade secrets lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the AI company of a pattern of misconduct aimed at getting current and former Apple employees to share confidential information. (In response, OpenAI said it is "not aware of any evidence that this complaint has merit.")
On the latest episode of TechCrunch's Equity podcast, Kirsten Korosec, Sean O'Kane, and I debated whether this lawsuit will cast a shadow over OpenAI's much-discussed plans to get into the hardware business (starting with a mobile smart speaker) and go public.
"Even setting aside whether or not the court grants any kind of injunctive relief or any kind of restraining order over what OpenAI is doing, it just naturally can lead to that sort of situation where it's going to cause some delays in what OpenAI is working on," Sean suggested. "Which I'm sure was probably part of the reasoning behind Apple doing this. They don't do this stuff willy nilly."
With all those plans on the line, will OpenAI try to settle this as quickly as possible, or did it learn from its recent courtroom victory against Elon Musk that it can endure the cost and embarrassment of a trial? Kirsten, at least, predicts the latter.

Mercedes driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli is still leading the championship race, but things have gotten tight after two straight races with car troubles and the surge of George Russell.
George Russell has capitalized by cutting down his deficit, gaining a total of 41 points over the last two races.
He is now within 25 points of Antonelli, who will certainly have pressure to deliver a clean weekend at the Belgian Grand Prix.
Reliability and car issues have become a big talking point about the Mercedes engine, given Antonelli’s two pointless races, though Russell has also grown in confidence with the car.
F1 experts Jolyon Palmer and James Hinchcliffe debated if it is the car underneath Antonelli or Russell that is the bigger threat to the Italian’s ****** le contention.

As an organization, the Los Angeles Dodgers accepted the ballclub's invitation to the White House this summer to celebrate the team's 2025 World Series victory.
"As was the case one year ago, the Dodgers' upcoming visits to the White House and Capitol Hill follow the longtime tradition of visits by other World Series champions," the Dodgers said via statement. "We appreciate these tributes in recognition of our back-to-back championships."
Whether or not to attend the once widley celebrated honor of celebrating championships with a visit to the White House has become a contentious topic in both of Donald Trump's administrations, himself a contentious figure.
In the Dodgers' case, longtime Los Angeles Times columnist Bill Plaschke took exception with the Dodgers' decision to attend, especially given the club's history with the iconic Jackie Robinson, who served a major role in integrating the MLB.
"The Dodgers do know they play in Los Angeles, right? Then why in the ***** do they insist on embracing the person trying to tear this city apart?" he wrote in his Los Angeles Times column. "This is an old issue, it's been written before, it's been debated ad nauseam, but it's happening again and remains as sickening as ever."

President Donald Trump is in the news for what may be an unexpected reason. A CNBC ****** ysis of the president's most recent financial disclosures shows that Trump made 327 stock purchases on April 8, 2025.
If that date doesn't ring a bell, here's a refresher -- the very next day, Trump posted on his Truth Social account that it was a "GREAT TIME TO BUY!!!" and then announced a partial rollback in his "Liberation Day" tariffs that caused the market to jump 9.5% in a day.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
There's a lot of discussion among experts about the ethics of Trump's trades, and the White House maintains that the president's investment accounts are managed by professionals who are not in regular communication with Trump. I'm not going to try to parse the legalities that are being debated on public airwaves and in Washington. However, I do think it's worthwhile to look at five megacap tech stocks that were central to Trump's April 2025 buying spree -- Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL) Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), and Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) -- and see how they've performed since that date.
Apple, Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Nvidia are all part of the "Magnificent Seven" group of stocks that have been primary drivers in the market for the last several years. The five companies have been closely followed as the appetite for artificial intelligence and AI-powered platforms remakes the market.

The Vikings' selection of Caleb Banks is going to be debated for months until he steps on the field in a regular-season game. Given the injury concerns, folks will want to see how sustainable his play is, but, of course, they will hope for the best.
Until then, various angles of his prospects for the Vikings will be discussed, including some making projections on what his long-term upside will look like. Sports Illustrated's Justin Melo wrote that up for all 32 first round picks recently.
Within his piece, Melo discusses the "high-risk, high reward" type of play his selection was.
"The Minnesota Vikings made Caleb Banks the most high-risk, high-reward pick of the entire first round. Banks was occasionally dominant at Florida, showcasing rare size, length, and athleticism. Health and consistency are the goals moving forward."
If Banks is a hit, this could be a defense altering type of player for the Vikings. If it is a miss however, it will be yet another one in what is becoming a growing list of players in recent memory for the team.

Anything and everything involving Indiana Fever point guard Caitlin Clark this season has become a hot-button issue. Fans and media members have debated her emotional outbursts on the bench and with referees, the way she is defended and officiated, and her impact on the floor.
Most recently, the discourse has revolved around whether Clark, who finished 1st amongst guards in All-Star voting by active players, deserved a higher finish. Eyebrows were raised on Wednesday when David Dennis Jr. said that there was no "compelling argument" for Clark as one of the four best guards in the WNBA.
"I don't think that you can make a compelling argument that Caitlin Clark is a top 4 guard in the WNBA. Like, ***** ody can at this point," he said.
"That is why she was 11th. She got the 11th most votes for being in the top 4. So there's really no controversy about that, because especially when you add in the fact that she is one of the most popular players in the WNBA, she's going to make the All-Star team. That is not the argument here."
Fans were incensed over Dennis's take, and it's now clear that they weren't the only ones who thought it was ludicrous. On Thursday, former WNBA star and current NFL reporter Stacey Dales appeared on First Take to sing Clark's praises.

Brody ******* ila, the 6’9”, 255 lb. prep lefthanded pitcher out of Massachusetts who throws over 100 mph, has a damaged UCL, per multiple reports. ******* ila had internal brace surgery on his elbow last May, and returned to throw as well as ever for much of the spring, though a decline in both velocity and command in his final few starts raised concerns about his health. Those concerns, it turns out, were valid.
I had debated about whether to do a draft write-up on ******* ila, as the Rangers have generally stayed away from high school pitchers in recent years. However, I’ve seen him mentioned as a possibility with the Rangers a couple of times — including in the June 29 BA mock draft — and you have to think the Rangers’ president of baseball operations has a soft spot for giant pitchers who also play basketball (Bumila led his high school team to the state championship this year).
Bumila is a good athlete for his size, and has shown good ability to throw strikes and repeat his delivery for a prep pitcher with his build. He has a relatively low arm slot and great extension, which makes his fastball play up and gives him good rising movement at the top of the zone. His secondaries, though, are way behind his fastball. Jen McCaffrey has a write-up on him for the Athletic that came out today, hours before the news of his UCL injury came out.
Bumila had gone from a likely first rounder to someone who could slip into the second round, based on the reports from the prognosticators, even before the news of the UCL damage. The fact that ******* ila will likely need UCL surgery — either another internal brace surgery or Tommy John surgery — is likely to exacerbate that slide.
Bumila is a University of Texas commit, and so has the opportunity to play for a top team in one of the top conferences if he doesn’t end up getting signed by a drafting team. However, he’d most likely be sitting out all of the 2027 baseball season for the Longhorns with a medical redshirt. He’d also be running a risk in regards to whether, and how well, he’d come back after two elbow injuries, with the possibility of getting a lower payday after three (or more) years in college. You also have the uncertainty surrounding the future of the draft — if you’re a high school player who is being offered top two round money right now, you have to consider the possibility that the landscape and bonus structure for the 2029 draft could look much different than it does now.

The next-gen Darwin Nunez may be on his way to Liverpool. The Reds are looking into a deal.
Liverpool need to find a new goalscorer. It's not, however, a routine proposition given the makeup of this squad.
Mohamed Salah needs replacing, certainly, and Liverpool lacked production from out wide even before his exit. A winger will be a priority.
However, top-target Yan Diomande said no and now the Reds are shopping in a sub-par market. It means that finding a 'tide over' option who can see Liverpool through another season before reassessing makes a lot of sense, especially if a bargain can be found.
Liverpool will want an option with potential and who could play more of a squad role, rather than a leading man. Exactly who ticks those boxes, however, will be hotly debated.

Slow-motion replay of Angel Reese's controversial foul has WNBA fans saying the same thing originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Angel Reese's stat line once again showed why she has become one of the WNBA's most dominant forwards. The Atlanta Dream star recorded yet another double-double on Saturday, finishing with 17 points, 13 rebounds, three ******* ists and two steals against the Golden State Valkyries.
But it wasn't Reese's production that had fans talking after the final buzzer. Instead, a controversial offensive foul late in the first half quickly became one of the most debated moments of the WNBA weekend after a slow-motion replay began making the rounds on social media. Once fans saw the play from a different angle, many reached the same conclusion.
With 2:48 remaining in the second quarter, Reese backed down Valkyries forward Laeticia Amihere in the post before spinning toward the basket. Officials immediately whistled Reese for an offensive foul, ruling that her elbow caught Amihere in the face as she made her move.
At full speed, the call appeared fairly routine. However, a slow-motion replay shared online quickly changed the conversation.

Every sports fan has their own list of unforgettable moments. Some were championship-winning plays. Others transcended sports altogether, inspiring an entire nation or forever changing the landscape of athletics. The beauty of these debates is that there are no wrong answers. Depending on your favorite sport, generation, or personal memories, your rankings may look completely different.
Below is one possible ranking of the greatest American sports moments ever. You may agree with every selection, disagree with the order, or have an entirely different top 10. That’s what makes sports debates so much fun.
Less than two months after the September 11 attacks, President George W. Bush walked to the mound at Yankee Stadium before Game 3 of the World Series. Wearing a bulletproof vest beneath his jacket, Bush confidently fired a strike from the pitching rubber to home plate. The stadium erupted as the moment became a symbol of resilience, courage, and national unity during one of America’s darkest times.
Whether Babe Ruth actually called his home run remains one of sports’ greatest mysteries. What isn’t debated is what happened next. After gesturing toward center field during Game 3 of the World Series, Ruth launched one of baseball’s most famous home runs, creating a legend that has endured for nearly a century.
Golf has produced countless memorable shots, but few rival Tiger Woods’ miraculous chip on the par-3 16th hole during the final round of the 2005 Masters. As the ball slowly rolled toward the cup before dramatically dropping in, accompanied by Nike’s iconic ball-on-the-edge commercial-like pause, one of the most recognizable images in golf history was born.

There are dependable footballers, there are ever-presents — and then there is Virgil van Dijk. At a time when workload limits in modern professional football are being debated more fiercely than ever, the captain of the Dutch national team is putting up statistical numbers that seem to come from another planet.
According to 'Squawka', the Liverpool star is the only outfield player at this World Cup to have played every single minute for his national team AND, at the same time, not missed a single second in the domestic league during the recently concluded club season (only Europe’s top seven leagues were taken into account).
Whether in the gruelling Premier League wearing the Liverpool FC shirt or as the emotional and tactical anchor of the Oranje on the biggest stage in the world, the 34-year-old simply does not do breaks. Neither muscle issues, tactical substitutions, nor the threat of a second yellow could disrupt his rhythm.

While other superstars are wrapped in cotton wool or need to be rested as a tournament goes on, Van Dijk remains the personification of consistency at centre-back.
