After electing to un-retire, former Detroit Lions edge rusher and three-time Pro Bowler Za'Darius Smith is eying a potential comeback. Smith reportedly worked out for the Cleveland Browns on Thursday after playing just five games with the Philadelphia Eagles last season.
Smith, who turns 34 in early September, previously played for the Browns in 2023 and 2024. "He's pretty impressive, he really is," Beamer said Aug. 11, drawing attention to the fact that unlike a lot of his teammates, he didn't graduate high school early to join the team in January.
"He just showed up in the summer time and the summer he had was elite. What he was able to do physically in the summer time was really impressive as a freshman and what he's able to do so far in practice is impressive."
Gray was Beamer's highest-rated prospect in South Carolina's 2026 signing class, before Julian Walker flipped from Michigan on early signing day and took that top spot. Gray is the No. 2 interior offensive line recruit nationally, according to the 247Sports Composite.

The Giants will be missing a member of their secondary for a little while.
Cornerback Dru Phillips did not practice on Thursday and head coach John Harbaugh said, via Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News, that Phillips will miss more time as a result of a knee sprain. The Giants play their first preseason game against the Vikings on August 15.
Phillips was a 2024 third-round pick and has played in 31 games over two seasons. He played in all 17 games last year and finished the season with 66 tackles, two interceptions and a fumble recovery while primarily working as a nickel corner.
Ar'Darius Washington and Nic Jones are expected to see more time while Phillips is recovering.

When NBA free agency opened several weeks ago, the Los Angeles Lakers quickly lost LeBron James, Marcus Smart, Luke Kennard and Jaxson Hayes. Once their new-look roster started to take shape, they still had a big hole at one of their starting forward positions, and there was some hope that they would retain forward Rui Hachimura.
However, Hachimura opted to join the Los Angeles Clippers, a team that is clearly on a downward trajectory, instead. The Clippers aren't exactly the faux-contenders they were a few years ago, especially now that star forward Kawhi Leonard is apparently on his way out, pending a trade to the Toronto Raptors, and that Paul George, James Harden and Ivica Zubac are long gone.
But Hachimura, via ClutchPoints, raved about the Clippers organization and said that he's "so happy" to be a member of the team.
"I'm just so happy," Hachimura said. "The Clippers are an amazing organization. Even when talking to other NBA players, they always rave about how great the Clippers organization is. It's truly a player-first team, you know. They take care of their players while having that winning mentality. The Clippers are a young team. A year ago, they were called the oldest team in the league, but they've transitioned to a younger generation especially with Kawhi Leonard getting traded. Joining them right as they build this next generation is huge for me, and I'm incredibly excited."

The USGA championship season continues with the U.S. Women's Amateur, which begins Tuesday at the Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tennessee.
Beginning with this year's championship, stroke play will be contested on Tuesday and Wednesday with match play starting on Thursday, a day later than usual. The 36-hole final will still take place on Sunday.
World No. 1 Kiara Romero is not in the field, neither are Stanford teammates Paula Martin Sampedro and Andrea Revuelta, the Nos. 2 and 3 amateurs in the world.
Texas senior Farah O'Keefe, however, is competing and at No. 4 in the world, she's the highest-ranked name in the 156-player field. Beginning with this year's championship, stroke play will be contested on Tuesday and Wednesday with match play starting on Thursday, a day later than usual. The 36-hole final will still take place on Sunday.
World No. 1 Kiara Romero is not in the field, neither are Stanford teammates Paula Martin Sampedro and Andrea Revuelta, the Nos. 2 and 3 amateurs in the world.
Texas senior Farah O'Keefe, however, is competing and at No. 4 in the world, she's the highest-ranked name in the 156-player field. She is joined by No. 7 Aphrodite Deng, last year's U.S. Girls' Junior winner (this year's champ, Clairey Lin, is also competing); No. 8 Asterisk Talley, who finished runner-up at the U.S. Women's Amateur two years ago; No. 9 Soomin Oh of South Korea; and No. 10 Rianne Malixi, the 2024 U.S. Women's Amateur champion.

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — At the end of the 2025 season, New York Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton told media that he hoped the team would hire a Coughlin-esque head coach. The Giants, of course, hired John Harbaugh, an old-school coach with a Super Bowl **** le and an 18-year track record filled with success.
So, did Slayton get what he wanted?
"I would say so," Slayton told **** embled media at The Greenbrier Sports Performance Center on Friday. "Yeah, absolutely. I feel like he's in that echelon, that ilk. He obviously came from arguably one of the most old-school divisions in football of the Ravens and the Steelers. I definitely think he's what we needed. There's definitely been a sense of accountability off the rip, which has been huge for us. I'm definitely glad Coach Harbaugh's here."
Slayton did not want to give specific examples of Harbaugh holding anyone accountable. That was a veteran move, smartly not throwing any teammates under the bus. He spoke in general terms.
"Already in this camp, he's already kind of expressed that at the end of the day, in this life, if somebody's not doing something up to the echelon that you want them to do, you go to them, you make that clear to them that that's not what we're going to do around here, then they have a chance to respond," Slayton said. "And that's something that he's already done in our first few days of camp and has gotten a positive response out of the individuals that he's done that with. New York Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton acknowledged that a sports hernia significantly affected his performance throughout the 2025 season. The veteran wide receiver said he began dealing with the injury early last year and elected to play through it rather than shut down for surgery.
"I pretty much started with it last season and just kind of played that way throughout the whole season," Slayton told reporters on Saturday. "Just because I wasn't going to just cut the season short with the surgery or anything. I got through last year and then I tried to kind of rehab it in the offseason and it just didn't really work. So, I just went ahead and got the procedure done."
After finishing the year, he attempted to rehabilitate the injury during the offseason. When that approach failed to produce the desired results, he underwent sports hernia surgery on both legs. Slayton reported feeling well following the procedure.
While careful not to lean on excuses, he conceded the ailment limited him in noticeable ways. He described having to strain more than usual to make catches and occasionally coming up just short of plays he felt capable of converting under normal circumstances.
"A good bit," he said of its impact. "I'm not a big excuse person. So, at the end of the day, I could have played better regardless, but obviously it's different when maybe you're used to being able to catch the ball a little easier. You're having to strain a little more and maybe come up an inch short here or there. But at the end of the day, if you're out there, you've got to make it happen."

During his only season in college, Meleek Thomas was an impressive scorer with 15.6 points per game. Of course, he was overshadowed by Darius Acuff Jr., his backcourt partner who ended up being a lottery pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.
Unfortunately for Thomas, he did not have the same experience because he fell all the way down to the second round. Thomas was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers with the 34th overall pick, which is turning out to be one of the biggest steals of the draft, especially after Thomas' impressive showing at NBA Summer League, where he caught a lot of people's attention.
Across four Summer League games for the Cavaliers, Thomas became a member of the All-Summer League First Team alongside the likes of fellow rookies Caleb Wilson, Cameron Boozer, Brayden Burries, and Yaxel Lendeborg.
In fact, Thomas was the leading scorer in Las Vegas, as he averaged 27.3 points per game to go along with a decent 3.5 rebounds, 3.8 **** ists, and two steals per game. Considering he was a second-round pick, standing alongside all those lottery picks was impressive for a 19-year-old guard.
