BEIRUT/JERUSALEM, Sept 4 (Reuters) - Israel's military has cleared Hezbollah fighters holed up in tunnels under the strategic Ali al-Taher ridge in southern Lebanon, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Friday, though the Iran-backed group did not immediately comment.
Israel had said Hezbollah fighters were ‌embedded in tunnels under the ridge, which overlooks a wide area and had become one of the most hotly contested areas in the Israel-Hezbollah war, despite ‌a ceasefire announced in June.
Reuters reported on Thursday that Iran had warned the United States last month that it would respond forcefully to an Israeli ****** ault on its Hezbollah allies' positions within the ridge.
"The mission was completed and the tunnels were cleared of terrorists," Katz said on social media, after a statement by the military late on Thursday saying it had operational control of the ridge.

LOS ANGELES — It couldn’t have been more appropriate that Farah O’Keefe was the one to secure the winning point for the U.S. to win the Curtis Cup at Bel-Air Country Club.
O’Keefe—the 21-year-old star and unquestioned leader—was told by captain Meghan Stasi in one of the famous Bel-Air tunnels that the U.S. would win the Curtis Cup. That was all O’Keefe needed to finish in style. She closed out the match and beat Charlotte Naughton, 2 and 1, securing the victory with a short putt on the 17th hole. Her teammates were celebrating at the 17th, and she joined them and jumped up and down with her teammates in a circle.
The Americans won the trophy back from GB&I, which won two years ago at Sunningdale. The U.S. has long dominated the event and a GB&I team hadn’t won on American soil in 40 years. That didn’t change Sunday with the Americans dominating in the 13-7 final tally.
“Definitely the highlight of my career so far,” said an emotional O’Keefe.
That statement tells you plenty about O’Keefe, who in the last three months made the cut at the Chevron Championship and the U.S. Women’s Open and won the NCAA individual championship among other accolades. And yet, the highlight was the team event, one that left her teary-eyed as she sat near the trophy with her captain and teammate Jasmine Koo.

NEW YORK (AP) — It wasn't the rats. Or the smells. Or the germs.
No, the most unpleasant part of descending into New York City's vast sewer system, according to former urban explorer Steve Duncan, was the **** roaches.
"They're all over the place, crawling on walls, dropping down on you," Duncan recalled this week. "They were the worst."
Duncan, 48, who now lives in Maryland, reflected on his years documenting the muck-filled tunnels running under New York after surveillance videos captured small groups of people mysteriously entering and exiting the sewer system in Brooklyn and Queens in recent days.
Police say they're still investigating the three incidents but don't believe there's any threat to the public. Officials stress that it is both illegal and dangerous to enter the city's 7,400 miles (12,000 kilometers) of sewer pipes.

In Shanxi, the province that sits at the heart of China's coal-mining industry, there's long been a saying: "Only go down a coal pit when you have no other way out."
For decades, life in these pits was intertwined with tragedy.
It became so common that it gave rise to other sayings: about how miners were "exchanging their lives for money" or "staking their lives for tomorrow" when they ventured into underground tunnels where they died from gas explosions, flooding and shaft collapses.
Over the past decade, safety reforms steadily erased the industry's deadly reputation, and those days were thought to be behind China - until 22 May, when a blast at the Liushenyu coal mine in Shanxi killed 82 people and injured more than 120 others.
China's worst coal mining disaster in more than 15 years happened as the country continues its ambitious pivot towards green energy - a reminder that it is still struggling to shake off its dependency on an industry that has proven dangerous so many times in the past.
