ATHENS, Greece (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday flatly refused to comment on a new report alleging that U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle engaged in improper and possibly illegal conduct before taking up her post.
Rubio told reporters that he would not discuss the allegations contained in a Wall Street Journal story that said Guilfoyle had asked a donor and supporter of U.S. President Donald Trump to pay a $100,000 credit card bill just before her confirmation hearing, promising him access to administration officials if he did.
He spoke before leaving Greece, where he delivered a speech calling for European countries to return to what he described as their civilizational roots.
Rubio said he was aware of The Wall Street Journal's report, which was published late Wednesday, but had no idea if it was true and he would not address it.
"You guys walk around thinking that because some source told you something and you reported it, it's the gospel. It's not the gospel. It's not the gospel for me. That's not the way we do things," he said at the foot of his plane as Guilfoyle, who was there to see him depart Greece, looked on.

Emily Ratajkowski put a sheer twist on her little black dress as she graced the premiere of Sacrifice, in Athens, Greece on October 3. The supermodel supported her boyfriend, Romain Gavras' latest project.
The 35-year-old went sans bra as she slipped into a sheer black midi dress that featured a cowl neckline with a figure-hugging silhouette. The opaque garment boasted a sleeveless design and was layered over simple black lingerie that was left exposed beneath. Emily accessorized with a beaded handbag from The Veil and a pair of strappy open-toe heels.
Emily's luscious brunette locks were left down in a sleek, straight style while her makeup oozed glam, courtesy of a brown smoky eye and a nude lip.

At the Cascale annual meeting in Athens on Wednesday, Asif Khan, executive director of supply chain and sustainability at Mondetta, acknowledged the central conflict undercutting fashion's green ambitions: while sustainability demands a long-term sourcing strategy, brands rely entirely on the ability to pivot at a moment's notice.
It's a commercial reality that constrains companies such as his, Khan admitted. Navigating a volatile environment shaped by fast-changing consumer demands, evolving trends and geopolitical instability, brands are unable to offer the multi-year purchasing guarantees that factories need to justify significant capital investments, he said.

Amal Clooney certainly knows how to put together an unforgettable ensemble—whether she's walking the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival, meeting with global politicians, or simply catching a flight. And she's been doing all three this week. After a very stylish series of appearances in Venice with husband George Clooney, the lawyer spent a few days in Athens, Greece with her mother journalist Baria Alamuddin. On September 10, Amal met with the country's president, Konstantinos Tasoulas—and, naturally, she pulled together another pitch-perfect look for the occasion.

Everton have been presented with a surprise market opportunity after being offered the chance to sign Anthony Martial, according to talkSPORT. The former Manchester United forward is available as a free agent and would consider a return to the Premier League, a development that arrives at a time when David Moyes is urgently seeking attacking reinforcements.
The timing is obvious. Everton are short in the striking department after a move for Folarin Balogun collapsed late on Deadline Day. As the report states, the club are "desperate for a striker" and that need has only sharpened after the sale of Beto, leaving "just Thierno Barry up front". In that context, it is understandable why Martial's name has surfaced, even if the profile comes with major questions.
Photo IMAGO
Martial, now 30, has been without a club since his spell in Mexico with Monterrey ended after only 20 games earlier this year. He remains a recognisable name in Premier League circles, having scored 63 goals and produced 33 ****** ists across 209 matches for Manchester United. Yet the broader picture is harder to ignore. His post-Old Trafford career has offered little evidence of a sustained revival.
At AEK Athens, he managed nine goals and two ****** ists in 24 appearances. His time at Monterrey was more troubling, where he "scored just once in 20 games", and the source notes he has netted only 10 goals since leaving English football in 2024. Injuries have also continued to interrupt him, with a "nasty dislocated shoulder" cutting short his time in Mexico.

Aston Villa are now close to seeing Leon Bailey leave for Olympiacos after the British transfer window shut on 1 September. The Daily Express reports that the winger has found an alternative route out of Villa Park after a proposed move to Hull City collapsed late in the window.
Bailey had been left training alone at Bodymoor Heath after that failed switch, showing how far he had slipped from Unai Emery's plans. Now Olympiacos have stepped in with a permanent deal, and the winger is heading to Athens for a medical before completing the move. Reports indicate he will sign a contract running until June 2029.
Villa can no longer replace him from the English market, yet the club can still clear a difficult situation. Bailey's departure closes a chapter that had lost momentum.
Bailey's best spell came in 2023/24, when he produced 10 Premier League goals and 10 ****** ists, but that output has fallen away sharply. Across the 2024/25 and 2025/26 league campaigns, he scored just one goal. Last season brought 13 league appearances, mostly from the bench, with zero goals and one ****** ist, while his spell at Roma produced seven Serie A appearances without a goal.

I remember thinking "why are these views not being challenged in the copy?" when first reading Sophie Cunningham's comments in an ESPN profile last month.
The story dealt with Cunningham's status as a 3-and-D player who toes the line between effective and reckless in her aggression on the court. Buried deep in the story is a quote where she says she does not oppose trans people but "I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn't have to go against biological men."
My friend and fellow journalist Frankie de la Cretaz sent me the profile lamenting that this quote was left to stand on its own, without any context. Leaving it unchallenged validated Cunningham's claim that trans women are "biological men," and that trans women were harming girls in women's sports. There is no evidence of either claim.
The changes trans athletes go through with hormone replacement therapy as part of medical transition are complex. But they rewire a body to match the ******* a trans person identifies with. That's why organizations let them participate in sports consistent with their identity once they have reached a certain hormonal threshold.
There were nevertheless very few trans elite athletes, because there are very few elite athletes in general. After the Olympics allowed trans women to compete alongside women for the 2004 games in Athens, only one transgender woman has made it since: weightlifter Laurel Hubbard, at Tokyo in 2021. She failed to complete a single lift.

"These are exciting matches that we can look forward to. With Inter Milan, Villarreal CF, and Bodø/Glimt, we'll be facing three familiar opponents from last season, while at the same time, AEK Athens and Sabah FK – two teams we've never played before – are waiting for us. That's certainly exciting, especially since we still have a score to settle with Inter and Bodø from last year. Our minimum goal is to reach the Round of 16 – ideally, we'll achieve that within these eight games."

Everything was on the line at the draw in Monaco. The four home and four away opponents for the 2026–27 season have now been determined. UEFA will announce the exact dates of the matches by Saturday. Today, Thursday, former star strikers Thierry Henry and David Villa began by drawing the opponents for all 36 participating teams.
BVB already faced three of its eight opponents last year: At SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, BVB will once again take on Inter Milan and Villarreal CF—and these two matchups cannot be repeated next year—and will also face FK Bodø/Glimt from Norway again, though this time on the road. The other home opponents are Real Betis from Seville and AEK Athens—both of which will be first-time opponents! Away from home, Borussia will face Bodø/Glimt, as well as ******* nal, Aston Villa, and Sabah FK in Azerbaijan.
Inter MilanThe 21-time Italian champions have reached the Champions League final twice in the past four seasons. Inter has won the trophy three times (most recently in 2010), but suffered a surprising defeat last season in the Round of 16 against Bodø/Glimt—a team that shocked more than just BVB. BVB lost the head-to-head match against Inter 0–2. There will be a reunion with Manuel Akanji and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
Real BetisReal Betis Balompié, known as Real Betis for short or simply Betis—that's the name of Spain's 1935 champion and three-time cup winner. Their greatest international achievement was reaching the final of the 2025 UEFA Conference League. Former Borussia player Marc Bartra (pictured) played a key role in helping the team finish fifth in La Liga last season, thereby qualifying for the Champions League for the second time in the club's history. BVB has not yet faced Betis in a head-to-head match.
FC VillarrealThe second Spanish opponent—which finished third last year—comes from Pot 3, even though it made a splash internationally by winning the 2021 UEFA Europa League and reaching the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League the following year. In last season's league campaign, however, "the Yellow Submarine" finished in 35th place with just one point earned. At SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, BVB won 4-0.

BVB was placed in Pot 2 during the draw held this Thursday evening in Monaco; the team will face three repeat matchups and has two challenging away trips ahead. BVB will play each of these eight opponents only once—for a total of four home games and four away games.
At SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, BVB will face Inter and Villarreal in their current home jerseys, just as they did last year, as well as Real Betis and AEK Athens. The away trips will take them to London (Arsenal), Birmingham (Aston Villa), northern Norway (Bodø/Glimt), and Baku in Azerbaijan (Sabah FK).
The match dates have not yet been set. UEFA plans to announce them by Saturday at the latest.
Reactions to the draw, background on the format, and details about the opponents will follow later this evening. Tickets for the first home game will be available starting September 1 (12:00) in the online ticket shop. Advance sales will begin first for club members. Boris Rupert

(Photo by Valery HACHE / AFP via Getty Images)
Real Madrid learned their opponents for the 2026/27 Champions League league phase on Thursday, as UEFA held this season's draw in Geneva. Under the competition's Swiss-style format, now in its third year, Real Madrid will play eight league-phase matches, four at home and four away, against sides drawn from four seeding pots rather than the old group of four.
This year's draw pairs Real Madrid with Inter Milan and ******* nal from Pot One, PSV Eindhoven and Roma from Pot Two, Leipzig and Shakhtar Donetsk from Pot Three, and LASK and AEK Athens from Pot Four. It is a mix of old rivals and near strangers, given that ******* nal beat Real Madrid out of the quarter-finals only two years ago, Roma once knocked them out under coach José Mourinho's old adversaries, and LASK have never faced them at all.
Real Madrid go into the campaign looking to bounce back from a run of three quarter-final exits in four seasons, sandwiched around their 15th European Cup in 2023/24. The league phase runs from September through January, with matchday dates and kick-off times still to be confirmed by UEFA, before the knockout rounds begin in February and build toward the final at Madrid's own Estadio Metropolitano next June.
Pot one of the draw brings the heaviest company, Inter Milan at home and ******* nal away. Real Madrid's record against Inter is one of the most one-sided in the competition, eight wins from nine home meetings and four straight victories in their recent run. ******* nal is a different proposition. The two clubs have met just twice, back in 2005/06, before colliding again in the 2024-25 quarter-finals, when ******* nal won 5-1 on aggregate and hold the head-to-head edge from all three meetings.

It's that time of year again. Kansas State Football's official countdown to kickoff stands at 15 days, 2 hours, 49 minutes, 3 seconds, and counting. While it seems impossible because of the sweltering heat wave I've been suffering through down here in Athens, Georgia, fall is supposedly right around the corner. I've got a little over two weeks to talk about the Kansas State roster before we all get a chance to see the team in action. I'm going to start going back through the position reviews I published earlier in the summer and start speculating on a depth chart that will inevitably be proven wrong on September 5th.
Just a reminder that I don't live in Manhattan anymore. I'm not at practice, and I mostly have the same information everyone else does. Don't take any of these depth charts as "insider" information. I'm going to put them together based on the information available and make some relatively informed guesses based on press conferences, news releases, etc.

ATHENS - Athens High School may get to play a football season after all.
After the news came out last week that Athens would have to cancel its varsity football season due to lack of participation, it was announced on Monday, Aug. 17 that the school has plans to be involved in a co-op with St. Philip High School.
The Athens High School Board of Education approved the decision to join St. Philip in a co-op on Monday. The joining of the two teams to play in the 8-player division now awaits approval by the MHSAA, which is expected on Tuesday, Aug. 18.
MORE:2026 High School Football Schedules
"We're thrilled. It's a great thing for both schools," said St. Philip Athletic Director Blake Shaw. "After Athens sent out an email saying they couldn't field a team, I contacted the MHSAA to see what we could do. I knew we were past the date to announce a co-op, but I asked if we could do some kind of emergency co-op situation and they said yes. The MHSAA still has to approve it, but the people I talked to said it should go through easy."

It has welcomed marathon runners, rock stars and the first modern Olympic athletes. Now it's time for a monumental scrub.
Athens' U-shaped Panathenaic Stadium — made entirely of white marble — is getting its first systematic cleaning in more than a century.
Rebuilt for the first modern Olympics in 1896, the site is the ceremonial send-off point for the Olympic flame, including for Los Angeles 2028.
The stadium is made of the same glittering marble used on the Acropolis, making the cleanup job delicate.
The work is revealing a monument changed by time, weather and millions of visitors. Cleaners in white and blue overalls move across the stadium's 47 steep tiers with thin spray lances, using clean water at carefully controlled, low pressure. Machines vacuum up the runoff as they go.

In an era where personal identity is often transformed into a brand and creativity into a strategy, Candace Bushnell has taken a different path. Not because she couldn't move in that direction, but because she chose to remain, above all, a writer.
Sex and the City, the column that began in The New York Observer in 1994, has become one of the most recognizable cultural narratives of recent decades, influencing the way women talk about themselves, their choices, and their place in the world. And yet, for her, this success never functioned as an end point, but rather one of the many facets of her journey. Instead of being confined, her writing has continued to evolve, from best-selling novels such as Four Blondes, Trading Up, and Lipstick Jungle, to new narrative forms that test the boundaries between the private and the public.
Perhaps this is because, for her, creation is not the result of a strategy, but of an inner need. Of a constant urge to observe, process and transform experience into narrative – whether this happens in the solitary process of writing or in front of a live audience. It is no coincidence that, almost three decades after her first major success, she chose to return to the stage with a one-woman show that functions as a more direct, almost confessional version of her journey.
With True Tales of ******* , Success and ******* and the City, which was also presented in Athens on April 17, Candace Bushnell appeared in front of an audience, bridging the past and the present, but also the individual and the collective. It is a reminder that the stories that stand the test of time are not necessarily those designed to be "great", but those that are told with honesty.
On the occasion of her presence in Greece, the iconic author spoke to Fortune Greece about the timelessness of writing, the importance of an authentic voice, and what it means to continue to evolve creatively, even when you have already left your mark. (This is republished in Fortune with permission.)

Left-back James Penrice says joining Rangers on loan from Greek champions AEK Athens - with the Ibrox club having an option to buy - is "a bit surreal".
The 27-year-old Scot previously played in his homeland with Livingston and Hearts after earlier spells with Partick Thistle and East Fife.
Penrice moved to the Greek top flight from Hearts last summer and played 32 times for the side who beat reigning champions Olympiacos to secure their 14th national **** le. Sixteen of those appearances were starts.
The defender has made more than 300 senior club appearances overall and arrives with fellow left-back Tuur Rommens absent for up to seven weeks with a groin injury.
The deal is subject to international clearance, with Rangers' next game at home to St Mirren in Sunday's League Cup tie (16:00 BST).

The nation's top-ranked quarterback Christopher Vargas is a rising junior at St. John's Prep in Danvers, Massachusetts. Vargas is ranked as a five-star recruit and announced his commitment to the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Vargas is the latest class of 2028 quarterback recruit to announce his commitment. College football programs are looking to gain commitments at quarterback earlier and earlier these days.
Vargas is the No. 1 recruit in Massachusetts in the 247Sports composite rankings. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound passer is the No. 1 quarterback in the country and is ranked ahead of Georgia Bulldogs quarterback commitment Jayden Wade.
Georgia was among the elite college football teams interested in Vargas. The Bulldogs offered the five-star a scholarship back in Oct. 2025 after he attended the Georgia-Ole Miss game in Athens, Georgia.
Vargas is a foundational piece to the Buckeyes' class of 2028. The signal caller is Ohio State's fourth commitment in the rising junior class. The Buckeyes and coach Ryan Day have the nation's second-best recruiting class in the 2028 cycle, but we are still over a year away from the early signing period for 2028 recruits, so there's a long way to go.
