The San Francisco Giants made a handful of roster moves on Tuesday, ahead of their evening home game against the Houston Astros. As expected, the team found a veteran catcher to back up Drew Cavanaugh, and it's a familiar face: Andrew Knizner.
Knizner had been playing for the Boston Red Sox AAA affiliate until last week, but exercised an opt-out clause. The 31-year old had posted a 141 wRC+ with two home runs in 21 games for Boston's Minor League team (which came after a 123 wRC+ with 10 homers in 33 games with Colorado's AAA affiliate), and was hopeful that he could parlay that performance into another Major League opportunity.
That opportunity came calling quickly, as the Giants announced on Monday that catcher Daniel Susac had a fractured left knee patellar, which almost certainly ends his debut season. San Francisco had added Zach Morgan to the roster to back up Cavanaugh, with Morgan arriving in San Francisco during the third inning of the game. Morgan's debut stint in the Majors lasted less than a game: he didn't see any action, and was optioned to AAA Sacramento on Tuesday.
Knizner, a right-handed hitter who has seven Major League seasons under his belt, played 33 games for the Giants last year, and hit .221/.299/.299 for a 73 wRC+. Thanks to his solid defense behind the dish, though, he was still worth +0.2 fWAR. Knizner will play plenty, but will likely still be the backup to Cavanaugh, so that the Giants can give one of their rookies some serious run to better develop and evaluate him.
Elsewhere on the roster, the Giants activated outfielder Victor Bericoto off the 10-Day Injured List. Bericoto, who is in his debut season, hadn't played since injuring his oblique on July 9. The righty made four rehab appearances with Sacramento, and hit 1-14 with a double, a walk, and six strikeouts. With Heliot Ramos traded, Bericoto is expected to get a chance to be the everyday left fielder, which will serve as an audition for the same role in 2027. He's hitting .293/.305/.552 through 59 plate appearances this year, and jumps straight into the lineup tonight, starting in left field and hitting fifth.

Just days after ESPN agreed to air the Patriot Games, an initiative of the Trump administration and the Freedom 250 project, one of its biggest stars joined the president for a photo op ahead of the competition's final round.
On Tuesday evening, a White House account on X posted a video of Pat McAfee welcoming President Donald Trump on the tarmac in Cleveland as Trump arrived for the high school sports competition. McAfee then smiled for photos with Trump before walking to Marine One, the president's helicopter.
Presumably, the two flew together to Spire Academy, the sports boarding school outside Cleveland where the inaugural Patriot Games were held this week.
Two high school-aged athletes from each state were selected to compete for a scholarship fund, which will be awarded to one young man and one young woman. According to the competition's website, "the event will feature a series of athletic challenges designed to test strength, endurance, agility, teamwork, and perseverance, including a Presidential Fitness Test, a military-inspired boot camp circuit, an obstacle course, and team competitions such as Kickball, Dodgeball, Tug of War, and Victory Hoops."
ESPN aired the Patriot Games on its app this week, and will broadcast a one-hour primetime special on its cable network Thursday night.

Erling Haaland was among the first Manchester City players to reach out to Enzo Maresca and offer his congratulations upon succeeding Pep Guardiola. However, the Norwegian striker is unlikely to be leading the side out too frequently under the new manager — and it's precisely because he finds the back of the net so often.
Haaland was handed the City captaincy following January 2025, when he put pen to paper on a new deal tying him to the club for nearly a decade. The 26-year-old has developed into a genuine leader over the past season and remains one of just a handful of players still at the club from their Treble-winning campaign three years ago.
New boss Maresca will be leaning on Haaland not only for his presence in the dressing room but also for his prolific output in front of goal. A greater emphasis will be put on getting the ball wide so that City's wide players can beat their markers and deliver into the box, which should generate even more scoring opportunities for the No.9, as per the Manchester Evening News.

Ex-Real Madrid star David Alaba has taken to social media this week, to send a message of encouragement the way of Blancos starlet Dean Huijsen. This comes after the latter made the call to take over ownership of Alaba's squad number for the seasons ahead.
Huijsen is fresh off seeing his prominence in Spain's capital reiterated on Monday. After a somewhat hit-and-miss debut campaign in the colours of Real Madrid, the 21-year-old was nevertheless handed an iconic jersey number.
As confirmed by the player himself, Huijsen is Los Merengues' new no.4.
Drawn on his selection by the media on Monday evening, the former Juventus talent admitted that his inspiration was none other than Sergio Ramos.
As alluded to above, though, a day on, Huijsen has received a personal message from the player to have donned the no.4 even more recently than Ramos.

Nearly 10,000 seats were empty at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium for the European Athletics Championships on Monday evening.

Athletics supporters blamed ticket prices, with some describing them as "extortionate", while BBC commentator Steve Cram commented that spectator numbers were a "little disappointing".
But Birmingham 2026 organisers said they were "delighted" with ticket sales, which have "far surpassed" their targets with "Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening sessions approaching sell-out, with several other sessions close to capacity".

Whether it's the start of a new season looming later this month or the scars from several failed transfers this summer, Roma seems to be acting with greater urgency in its pursuit of Porto prodigy Rodrigo Mora. The 19-year-old Portuguese sensation was barely a blip on the transfer radar last week, but he's dominated the headlines over the past day and a half.
While we'll never know when Roma began tracking Mora, they've moved swiftly, reportedly agreeing to a five-year contract with the 19-year-old attacking midfielder. Yesterday, we discussed the three transfer formulas Roma offered Porto, including a small initial fee with a massive balloon payment next summer, a €25-€30 million fee with a 50% sell-on clause, and a quasi-layaway plan where Roma would pay the €50 million fee in two installments between this summer and next.
As the sun set on Monday evening, the 50/50 formula was gaining traction only to be quickly interrupted by rumors that, rather than having a sell-on clause, Porto wanted a buy-back clause; an entirely different can of worms. We're no closer to a deal than we were yesterday, several sources, including Gianluca Di Marzio, have disavowed any notion of a buy-back clause.
Di Marzio's latest updates suggest that the two clubs are still working on the finer points of the deal, with Roma attempting to close it at €25 million up front, plus a 50% sell-on clause. Additionally, the Giallorossi want to structure the deal as a loan with an option rather than an obligation, in which case the deal would be structured as €25 million now and €25 million next summer, ***** uming Roma would pick up the option.
In a sense, this is all just theatre for the balance sheets; Roma will pay €50 million for this kid one way or another.

Walsall have completed the signing of former Everton defender Roman Dixon on a two-year contract, with a club option of a further year.
The 21-year-old right-back was released by the Toffees at the end of last season, bringing to an end a ten-year ****** ociation with the Premier League club.
Dixon spent the second half of last season on loan at League One side Stockport County, but had previously also gained first-team exposure with Everton, for whom he made three senior appearances.
He becomes Walsall's 12th signing of what has proven to be a busy summer of business under new boss Lee Grant, who commenced his reign with an impressive 1-0 win over Championship side Bristol City in the EFL Cup at Ashton Gate on Thursday evening.
"I grew up not too far from here in Stafford/Wolverhampton so it feels like a trip down memory lane in some ways but when the gaffer rang me I was sold instantly," Dixon told the club website.

Texas A&M's third preseason practice, and first full practice open to the media, on Saturday showcased the rise of junior wide receiver Terry Bussey and provided more proof that redshirt junior quarterback Marcel Reed, entering his second full starting season, has significantly improved his accuracy and ball placement.
Among the Aggies' 17 transfer portal additions this offseason, former Northwestern Edge Anto Saka and Tennessee transfer cornerback Rickey Gibson III continue to shine in their roles, looking to replace unanimous All-American pass rusher Cashius Howell and veteran corner Will Lee, who were two of A&M's record 10 players selected in the 2026 NFL Draft.
On Monday, Texas A&M's fifth preseason practice further emphasized the offense, as Marcel Reed and his elite wide receiver rotation, now including Alabama transfer Isaiah Horton, continued to build chemistry, which is already established with Mario Craver and Ashton Bethel-Roman, while freshmen Aaron Gregory and Madden Williams would likely start for several SEC teams who don't possess the Aggies' depth.
Texas A&M's running battle between Rueben Owens and Jamarion Morrow continues to take shape, and after an impressive performance this weekend, freshman KJ Edwards' athleticism continues to impress coach Mike Elko and his staff. Redshirt freshman back Tiger Riden showed off his blocking skills on Monday, and senior linebacker Daymion Sanford's return is nothing short of incredible given the severity of his fibula injury.
Here are the best highlights from Texas A&M's fifth preseason practice on Monday evening.

Ronald Araujo is in the door at Liverpool, so onto Bradley Barcola next – or so the theory goes, except there's one problem.
On Monday evening, the Reds confirmed the arrival of the Uruguayan defender on a season-long loan from Barcelona, with the option to sign him permanently next year for £47.1m (The Athletic).
With that move completed, sporting director Richard Hughes can turn his full attention to trying to land the Paris Saint-Germain winger, who's reportedly agreed a five-year contract at Anfield. However, it isn't just the Parisians' asking price of £128m (TEAMtalk) which is acting as an impediment to that pursuit.
As neatly explained by Michael Reid (Football Data Editor with OptaJoe) on X, Araujo's arrival has taken Liverpool to the maximum permissible quota of 17 non-homegrown players for their 2026/27 Premier League squad.
Essentially, this means that if the Reds are to sign Barcola, they'd either have to sell one of those 17 players to make room for him, or omit a current player from their top-flight squad until January.

During the top of the third inning of Monday night's Royals vs. Dodgers game, the SportsNet LA broadcast flashed a leaderboard of the lowest starter ERA since the start of the 2023 season. Of the five names listed, four are currently employed by the back-to-back champs: Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Shohei Ohtani, Blake Snell and the star of this particular evening, Tarik Skubal. Some understandably pessimistic fans in western Pennsylvania surely harbor fear that the fifth figure, Paul Skenes, will end up in Dodger blue one day as well.
But if that list was a reminder — as if anybody needed another — of the preposterous talent gilding L.A.'s star-studded roster, Skubal's ordinary performance on Monday in his first home start as a Dodger emphasized that nothing in this wonky sport is preordained.
Pitching in front of a revved up, eager audience, Skubal was downright mediocre in L.A.'s 6-5 victory over the Royals.
His fastball command was, by his cathedral standards, scattershot. He struggled to locate the four-seamer consistently at and just above the top rail, right where the world-beating southpaw makes his bread. Skubal had similar issues with his sinker, a handful of which ended up catching far too much plate, including one that resulted in a first-inning RBI single from Royals first baseman Jac Caglianone.
But the hammer blow of Skubal's night came in the third, when he gifted Caglianone a hanging, piped 0-2 slider. The scalding-hot lefty didn't miss the miss, sizzling the breaker 110.8 mph into the right-field seats to give Kansas City an early 3-0 lead.

Lightweight contender Mateusz Gamrot released a statement addressing his UFC Vegas 120 main event loss to rising star Quillan Salkilld.
Salkilld put the rest of the lightweight division on notice after submitting Gamrot in the first round. It was his 13th consecutive win and earned him a fourth Performance of the Night bonus in a row.
In his statement, Gamrot emphasized that his story will go on and lessons were learned.
"I have lost. But that failure doesn't end my story," Gamrot wrote on Instagram. "For many years I have been following this path that taught me sports, just like life, we don't always get what we work hard for. Sometimes instead of winning, we learn the lesson. Sometimes, instead of a raised hand, there is silence that forces us to look deeper into ourselves.
"I've already been to the peak. I have been down too. I win, I lose, I fall, and I come back And that's why I know my road doesn't end yet. You can defeat me in one evening, but you can't take away my faith, character and will to fight. I believe there are still great times ahead of me. Next chapters that I haven't written yet. Because a man is not defined by failure. He's defined by what he'll do after he loses. You can stay down or you can get up. I will rise up! With my head held high With confidence in yourself. Grateful for the road I've come, and hungry for what's ahead. Because as long as you go the story goes on.

Has Devin Williams' injury opened a door to a new role for Kodai Senga?
After Williams was placed on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to Aug. 8, with a right shoulder strain, Senga received the first crack at a save opportunity on Monday night.
Senga faced the heart of the Braves' batting order, striking out both Matt Olson and Michael Harris II before working around a two-out walk with a fly ball to pin down his first career major league save in the Mets' 8-5 victory over the Braves in the series opener at Truist Park in Atlanta.
"Didn't soft serve him," Mets interim manager Andy Green told reporters. "Those were some of the best hitters in the league. Really good stuff. His first two punchouts were sensational, they're really good forkballs to punch those guys out. He was great. Hopefully he feels great tomorrow and he's ready to go again."
The only problem for Senga on a milestone evening? Where was the ball?

Late on Monday evening, I said, "hey, it is Monday, does that mean the AVCA preseason poll came out today?" Lo and behold, it sure did.
Okay, let's get a notepad out and figure out who's in here that Marquette volleyball is going to play this season… Wait. What's this? Down here in the receiving votes?
MARQUETTE HAS 28 POINTS WORTH OF VOTES. THEY START THE 2026 SEASON AS THE UNOFFICIAL #34 TEAM IN THE COUNTRY!
That's awesome. I legitimately did not expect that. With the loss of so many seniors and three starters departing via transfer, including top attacker Natalie Ring, I presumed that the coaches that have a ballot would just say "ah, yes, NCAA tournament in head coach Tom Mendoza's first season, but come on, top 25 to start next year? Not so fast my friend." A lot of them did! Nebraska is #1 and they have over 1,500 points! Marquette has only 28! But 28 is more than the two points across two ballots that you need to get mentioned in the Receiving Votes area, and that's great.
As for Marquette's schedule, well, Tom Mendoza didn't shy away from anything. MU's first match of the season will be against preseason #2 Texas, as they get the Longhorns at Fiserv Forum in the AVCA First Serve event. Texas snagged one first place vote to sneak past #3 Kentucky and their four first place votes and land right behind the Cornhuskers.

The Commanders have reportedly signed defensive tackle Byron Cowart, adding depth to a position group thinned by D.J. Davidson's retirement.
Washington beat reporter Ben Standig, citing a source, first broke the news on Monday evening.
Standig did not report a corresponding move, which will likely be announced by head coach Dan Quinn before Tuesday morning's practice.
Cowart was one of eight players to try out for the Commanders on Monday.
Cowart has been in the NFL since 2019, when the New England Patriots drafted him in the fifth round of the NFL draft. The University of Maryland product has played regular-season games for the Patriots, Colts and Bears. He also spent time on Miami's practice squad. He was with the Jets in 2025, placed on injured reserve on Aug. 26 and released later that year.

The Arizona Diamondbacks don't know who their closer will be for the stretch run of an air-tight NL wild-card race. But it won't be Paul Sewald.
The Cardinals designated Sewald for ******* ignment Monday, ending the veteran closer's second stint with the franchise at a critical juncture of the playoff race.
The transaction removes Sewald from the 40-man roster. Arizona now has seven days to either trade Sewald, release him, send him to the minors or place him on waivers. His time with the big-league club is done.
Manager Torey Lovullo spoke about the decision with reporters Monday evening.
"It was a brutal decision, Lovullo said. "He's meant so much to this organization. He's closed out 24 games. He solidified things for our '23 run. He had a number of saves in '24, where he got banged up.

NHL Network has made it an annual tradition to rank the top players in the league at each position — top 20 for centers, wingers and defensemen and top 10 for goalies. As is the case with virtually everything on social media, the lists are very much up for debate.
Utah Mammoth fans will notice the absence of Mikhail Sergachev from the top defensemen list, which was published Sunday evening.
Sergachev placed No. 18 in 2025, so this year's rankings beg the question: Did Sergachev get worse, or did others simply get better?
Here are some factors to consider — some affirming the league's ranking and others refuting it. The conclusion is up to the individual reader to determine.
Sergachev isn't a 75-plus-point guy like the names at the top of the list, but he is consistently just outside the top 10 in points among NHL defensemen.

Antonio Banderas rang in his 66th birthday in style, under the sky of Marbella with an opera legend leading the chorus. That was the scene at the 17th annual Starlite Occident Gala, where Banderas rang in his 66th year with his partner, Nicole Kimpel. He was serenaded at midnight by Plácido Domingo himself.

The tenor rose before a crowd already on its feet and led the room through "Happy Birthday," turning a gala tradition into one of the night's most talked-about moments.
Banderas didn't just receive gifts that evening — he gave one away. Earlier in the night, during the gala's charity auction, the actor peeled off the shirt on his back, a piece he'd customized himself, and put it up for bidding to boost the fundraising total.
"This marks 17 galas completing our foundational efforts. We're gonna continue for another 17 years if life allows it," he said.

Infanta Sofia of Spain proved she was the queen of royal recycling this weekend as she stepped out in a stunning dress previously worn by both her mother and her older sister.
The Spanish royal, 19, was seen in a gorgeous off-the-shoulder blue and white dress for a family dinner at the Mia Restaurant in Palma on Friday evening.
The gown, a collaboration between designer Stella Jean and Desigual, looked very familiar – as in previous summers it's been worn by Queen Letizia and Princess Leonor, 20.
Letizia, 53, wore it to the 2023 Balearic Island Reception three years ago at the Marivent Palace, while Leonor wore the piece in August 2025, styling the statement item with gold earrings and navy blue sandals.

The ongoing friction between President Donald Trump and pop superstar Taylor Swift reached a fresh flashpoint on social media after the campaign's official TikTok account targeted the singer in a post that was later muted.
The TeamTrump account, which commands roughly 14 million followers, posted a video celebrating August, featuring Trump and First Lady Melania Trump watching fireworks.
The post originally used Swift's 2020 track "August" as its background music, accompanied by a caption directly taunting the pop icon, who married Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce in July.
The TikTok video included text overlaid across the screen stating, "Mood because it's August and Donald Trump is your president." The accompanying caption took a direct jab at the singer, reading: "I'm sure Taylor Swift is going to be super excited we used her song! #taylorswift #MAGA #august ."
However, by Friday evening, users across the United States noticed that the track had been scrubbed from the clip. In place of the song, TikTok displayed a standard copyright notification stating, "The copyright owner hasn't made this sound available in your country."

George Russell and Carmen Montero Mundt are engaged after six years together, marking a major personal milestone for the Mercedes Formula One driver.
Russell and Montero Mundt announced the news in a joint Instagram post on August 9. The photographs showed the couple during what appeared to be an intimate, candlelit dinner beside the beach, with Montero Mundt displaying her engagement ring.
The couple kept the announcement simple, captioning the carousel with only a ring emoji and a white heart.
The proposal came just two months after Russell publicly described Montero Mundt as part of his future and said he expected them to marry within the next five years.
The engagement carousel included four photographs from the occasion. In one, Russell kissed Montero Mundt as she held up her left hand to display the ring. Another showed the couple beside a candlelit dinner table under the evening sky.

Defending champion Ben Shelton kept a clean slate at the ATP Montreal Masters on Sunday, holding off a challenge from Joao Fonseca to power 6-3, 7-6 (7/3) into the quarter-finals.
World number 10 Shelton has not dropped a set in reaching the last eight. The 23-year-old American left-hander will face the winner of a later match between Botic Van De Zandschulp and 13th seed Jakub Mensik.
Brazilian teenager Fonseca, billed as one of the faces for the future of the sport, might have compromised his own chances when he landed badly on his ankle after missing a smash while leading 3-1, 40-30 in the second set.
The youngster was plagued by 32 unforced errors as his opponent mastered an annoying evening wind to earn the victory.
"It was tough today, not easy conditions," Shelton said. "With the wind I struggled to find footing on a lot of **** .

Following our discussion last night regarding the Miami Dolphins' potential defensive MVP, we now turn our attention to the offensive side of the ball. Aside from the running backs room, the skill positions look significantly different this season. De'Von Achane remains the clear leader in the backfield, with a continued role in the passing game, while fans adjust to Malik Willis taking over at quarterback.
At tight end, Greg Dulcich has emerged as the early favorite to lead in receptions. However, the wide receiver corps remains the biggest question mark following the departures of Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill. The team has revamped the unit by adding free agents Jalen Tolbert and Tutu Atwell, drafting prospects like Caleb Douglas and Chris Bell, and leaning on returning players such as Malik Washington and Theo Wease.
With 12 receivers currently on the roster, Miami will likely trim this group to roughly six for the 53-man squad, with a few more potentially landing on the practice squad. While reports suggest Malik Willis is building chemistry with Washington and Wease, and that Caleb Douglas looks like he was well worth his draft selection, the pecking order remains uncertain—particularly as we await Chris Bell's return from injury to see how he competes once fully integrated into practice and game action.
So this evening's Phinsider Question Of The Day is:
Who is your early choice to take the ****** le of Miami Dolphins Offensive MVP for the 2026-2027 NFL season and why?

Real Madrid star Arda Güler has taken to social media this weekend, to send a message of encouragement the way of new teammate Carlos Espí. This comes after the latter opened his account in the colours of Los Blancos.
José Mourinho's troops were back in action on Saturday, making the trip to Budapest for a friendly meeting with Hungarian outfit Ferencvárosi.
When all was said and done, Real emerged on the right side of a 2-1 result. And the aforementioned Espí proved himself a star performer on the evening.
Introduced off the bench for the 2nd-half, the 21-year-old – fresh off linking up with Mourinho's men from La Liga rivals Levante – wasted little time in making his mark. Slipped in courtesy of a perfect pull-back on the part of Federico Valverde, Espí made no mistake in picking out the bottom corner with a confident strike.
Fresh off a breakout campaign in 2025/26, the young striker will be hopeful that this proves to be a sign of things to come for his Real Madrid stint.
