A UK court ordered Prince Harry and six others Friday to pay an initial £9.5 million ($13 million) after they lost their privacy case against the publisher of British tabloid the Daily Mail.
The court said the prince and six other high-profile figures, who lost their unlawful information gathering and privacy invasions claim against ***** ociated Newspapers Limited (ANL), must make the payment within a week.
The claimants -- which include Elton John, his husband David Furnish, actors Elizabeth Hurley and Sadie Frost -- accused the Mail of bugging their cars and homes, listening into calls and accessing bank accounts and medical records. ANL had denied all the allegations.
After an emotional 11-week trial, judge Matthew Nicklin sided with the publisher in a ruling handed down on July 7, concluding the "claimants failed to prove their pleaded allegations".
After a further two-day hearing over costs, he made Friday's initial costs decision.

Prince Harry and a group of six other high-profile figures have been ordered to make an initial payment of £9.54m in legal costs to the Daily Mail's publisher after they lost their High Court privacy case.
The seven claimants, also including Sir Elton John and Liz Hurley, must pay the initial figure by 28 August - and could potentially pay up to £25m more after that in a victory for **** ociated Newspapers Limited (ANL).
The group had sued ANL over allegations of unlawful information-gathering, which the publisher had strenuously denied.
On 7 July, Judge Mr Justice Nicklin dismissed the claims and said the public figures had failed to prove the allegations.
The judge ruled that he was making an exceptional order to force the Duke of Sussex and others to pay up to £34.5m in costs incurred by the newspaper group because of the way the case had been brought - including unsupportable claims that top executives from the group had lied to the Leveson public inquiry.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's daughter Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt has filed a legal notice in the Los Angeles Daily Journal to officially announce she is legally requesting to drop "Pitt" from her last name.
According to court documents obtained by In Touch, Vivienne, 18, completed California's required four-week newspaper publication process on August 14. Under California law, people seeking a legal name change must generally publish a notice of their petition before a judge can approve the request, giving anyone the opportunity to object.
As In Touch previously reported, Vivienne filed legal paperwork on July 12 asking to remove "Pitt" from her last name, citing the reason as 'personal.' A hearing on the petition is scheduled for November 2. The teen was previously credited as "Vivienne Jolie" in the Playbill for Broadway's The Outsiders, the Tony Award-winning production she helped produce alongside her mom, per People.

An Alabama jury determined on Thursday, August 20 that former Alabama men's basketball player Kai Spears was defamed by The New York Times for an article that inaccurately linked him to the scene of a fatal shooting. As part of the ruling, which came after five hours of deliberation and two weeks of testimony in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama, Spears was awarded $9.25 million in damages. In March 2023, the newspaper reported that Spears, a walk-on that season for the top-ranked Crimson Tide, was in the passenger seat of former Alabama star and current Charlotte Hornets forward Brandon Miller's car during the deadly shooting of Jamea Harris in Tuscaloosa. It was later revealed that the passenger in the car was a team manager, not Spears.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's reported return to the UK is reportedly due to this major reason. According to insiders, the Sussexes' financial status was part of their decision-making. Earlier, several reports suggested that the couple has been going through money troubles in California. However, it was recently reported that the parents of two are "not out of money," but their expenses seemed to be high.
One of the reasons why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly returning to the UK has been revealed. An insider told Page Six that "cash is a big" reason for their move. "They are not out of money," they said, adding, "Anything that comes in instantly goes out." According to a source, the Sussexes' expenses affected their financial status, allegedly leading them to move to Britain.
Furthermore, the insider claimed that Harry has seemingly inherited a fortune from some of his relatives. Over the years, Markle has also helped financially through her lifestyle brand, As Ever, and her Netflix project, "With Love, Meghan." From philanthropic work to exploring the entertainment market, the couple has dived into many opportunities. Thanks to their hard work, they reportedly had "more money than most even before Megxit!"
However, the more they earned, the more expenses they dealt with. According to the outlet, Markle and Harry had two mortgages on their mansion in Montecito, California. They also had a large household staff, so their salaries might have put a strain on the couple financially. Moreover, the Sussexes owned a vacation estate in Portugal. On top of these expenses, Harry lost a multi-million-dollar lawsuit against ***** ociated Newspapers.
Meanwhile, Harry and Markle are said to be returning to the UK. It has not been confirmed when they will move or how long they plan to stay. But reports claimed that they would stay outside London and their kids would start school in September.

In the build-up to the return of La Liga action, former Real Madrid winger turned La Liga ambassador and ESPN pundit Steve McManaman spoke at a press conference to address the changes at the Bernabéu this summer and the expectations on Jose Mourinho.
"He needs to win. It's as simple as that. He needs to beat Barcelona. He needs to win the league. I don't necessarily think he needs to win the Champions League, but I certainly think he needs to finish above Barcelona," McManaman said.
"He's been brought in because the last two years have been disappointing. Real Madrid can't go three years without winning anything. And your nearest and dearest rivals are in Barcelona winning everything. So Jose has to hit the ground running and he has to be successful straight away. That's what he's being brought in for."
"When we won all those ****** les with the names you mentioned, we had an incredible number six in Claude Makélélé who really helped the midfield… Real Madrid this year have tried to rectify that. I think they were weak defensively last year. He was the most important player in our team. Forget about Figo, Zidane, Raúl, Ronaldo. Zidane said the most important player was Makélélé."
"To be very honest, I never ever thought he would leave Real Madrid. I really didn't. I know there was a lot of stories in the English newspapers about ****** nal, but if you see Vinícius Júnior at Madrid, I thought most people think he was never going to leave. I don't think he was ever going to go to Saudi Arabia. That didn't make any sense at all for me. So his home is Madrid. I'm glad he signed a new six-year contract… The most important thing is for Vini and for Kylian to play in the same team, but each finds a role where they're very comfortable in, and drive Madrid forward."

A home series against Bangladesh was expected to give Australia a chance to shake off the rust and begin a busy year of Test cricket. Instead, the nine-wicket defeat in Darwin has left the top-ranked side facing questions about its batting and the future of the team.
Australia were beaten inside four days on Sunday after Bangladesh dominated the first Test. The result was described by Australian media as one of the country's biggest Test defeats, with ninth-ranked Bangladesh outplaying the hosts.
The second and final Test in Mackay, Queensland, begins on Saturday and now carries greater importance than expected. Australia need a convincing win to level the series and ease concerns that the Darwin defeat was more than just a one-off result.
"Let's call this out for the gob-smacking shambles that it was ... Australia's nine wicket loss to Bangladesh is both the greatest upset in Test history and the most humbling Test loss ever suffered by an Australian cricket team," veteran cricket writer Robert Craddock opined in the Courier Mail newspaper, as quoted by Reuters.
"None of Australia's 236 Test losses over 150 years quite compare to it."
Captain Pat ****** mins did not try to hide Australia's poor performance after the match. He said the game was lost on the opening day, when Australia were dismissed for 198, but the problems extended beyond that innings.
Australia struggled throughout the match, losing ground across all four days and in every session.
The main focus has been on the team's batting. The concerns are not new and had already emerged during the home summer, when Australia won the Ashes 4-1 against England.
Opener Jake Weatherald has yet to show that he can consistently perform at Test level and may get one more opportunity in Mackay.
Marnus Labuschagne is also under pressure after two poor dismissals in Darwin. Once a key player in Australia's top order, his continued struggle is putting more pressure on the batters below him.
The defeat has also renewed calls for Australia to bring in younger players. Head coach Andrew McDonald and his coaching staff may have to consider changes despite the lack of young batters putting up enough runs in domestic cricket to demand selection.

Giannis Konstantelias is set to join Borussia Dortmund from PAOK as he arrived in Germany on Sunday morning ahead of his medical check. However, the move isn't welcomed by his current club fans as they showed their discontent in multiple ways.
Led by a popular ultras group called "Gate 4", the fans protested the departure of the player who signed a deal until 2029 last summer. According to local newspapers, the fans arrived at the office of the club president with a demand for talks, and they also protested in front of the stadium.
Curiously, there were similar incidents after Stuttgart agreed all terms with PAOK for the attacker last year. In the end, the move was cancelled by the club owner Ivan Savvidis as Konstantelias ended up signing a new deal.
There were even reports that PAOK fans waited for him when he landed in Dortmund in hopes of convincing him to stay in Greece. However, that will not change matters for the player who has only left the club for a five-month loan to KAS Eupen so far.
Konstantelias scored three goals for PAOK in this season's Europa League qualifying rounds. Borussia Dortmund already signed his compatriot Konstantinos Karetsas from Genk. After their failed attempt at signing Said El Mala from Köln, the Black and Yellows immediately turned their attention to their second target.

LONDON (AP) — A British sociologist who resigned last week from the University of Cambridge following weeks of public accusations of plagiarism and media scrutiny was found dead Friday.
Jason Arday, who was 37 when he became Cambridge's youngest Black professor in 2023, resigned after he came under intense media pressure, with weeks of allegations about plagiarism in his academic work and questions surrounding claims about his athletic and fundraising accomplishments.
The Times and Telegraph newspapers, along with the BBC and Sky News, reported that Arday, 41, was found "unresponsive" inside a home in Battersea, south London, on Friday afternoon.
News of his death comes the same week as the release of his memoir, "Great and Unfortunate Things," a highly anticipated work that Simon & Schuster had decided to release despite the doubts about his credibility. In a statement issued through his publisher, Arday's family said that they were "in shock to have lost this amazing father, partner, brother, uncle and son."
"The campaign of misinformation was too much for Jason, who was a gentle man and who always wanted to see the best in everyone," the family said, adding that for three years Arday was "subjected to a campaign of sustained abuse ... by those who would leave no stone unturned in their quest to undermine him."

The sports front pages this August 12 spotlight the major continental final between Luis Enrique and Emery, along with ongoing situations involving Julián Álvarez, Ferran Torres, and Güler.
Marca puts the focus on the European Super Cup Final between PSG and Aston Villa. With the headline "Who will outshine whom?", the newspaper contrasts Luis Enrique's ambition to win the ******* le again with Unai Emery's revamped project. It also highlights Real Madrid's return to the Teresa Herrera Trophy thirteen years later.
In the Madrid press, AS gives its entire front page to Arda Güler under the slogan "Güler still in charge". The Turkish player will spearhead Real Madrid's attack at Riazor in the absence of the Club World Cup players. On the international front, the paper also covers the European Super Cup, describing it as a "very Spanish appetizer."
Mundo Deportivo focuses on the high-tension face-off between JuliánÁlvarez and Diego Simeone after the Argentine striker's no-show, both standing firm in their tug-of-war over his possible move to Barça. It also gives top billing to the "Lucho-Emery" Super Cup clash and confirms that Ferran Torres has been granted permission to finalize his departure from the blaugrana club.
Sport leads boldly with "Adieu, Ferran", announcing an imminent agreement with PSG for around 55 million euros. The Barça news is accompanied by a terrible medical update: the serious knee injury suffered by Roony Bardghji, who will miss the entire season with a torn cruciate ligament.

Aug 9 (Reuters) - Apple has been testing memory chips from China's CXMT across product lines including iPhones and MacBooks, to mitigate a component shortage fueled by the AI boom, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.
Apple held early talks with CXMT, which is China's largest chipmaker by market value, about supplying components with the goal of using them in some devices sold in China, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter.
Reuters could not immediately verify the report. Apple and CXMT did not respond to Reuters' requests for comment.
Reuters had earlier exclusively reported that CXMT was considering building a second memory-chip plant in Beijing to boost production.
Laptop makers HP and Acer have started using CXMT memory chips in devices sold outside the U.S. to ease supply shortages, the newspaper said.

LONDON (AP) — FIFA has issued a statement defending its president, Gianni Infantino, against what it calls a "concerted and ongoing effort" to undermine his leadership of the organization.
The statement was released Saturday, a day after a report by British newspaper The Daily Telegraph raising questions about an exit package paid by UEFA to a female staffer who worked with Infantino when he was general secretary of European soccer's governing body.
UEFA confirmed that a "departure payment" was made to the employee and said it was "in line" with regulations at the time.
Infantino worked at UEFA for 16 years before being elected FIFA president.
In the statement Saturday, FIFA accused Infantino's critics of trying to weaken his authority and remove him from office without due process.

European soccer's governing body says it delivered payments to a woman who British newspaper The Telegraph alleges was involved in an extra-marital relationship with Gianni Infantino.
Infantino is now the president of FIFA, global soccer's governing body, but the relationship allegedly took place while the Swiss administrator served as UEFA's general secretary between October 2009 and February 2016.
The newspaper reported Infantino promoted the woman while they were carrying on their relationship, with the woman given a six-figure payment and also seeing her MBA study covered by UEFA. The governing body says its records indicate a payment was made and the course was covered but says that was in line with the organization's regulations at the time of the incident.
"We are aware of the allegations and can confirm a departure payment was made to the individual in question, coupled with the payment of fees for an MBA course at a local business school," UEFA said in a statement shared with USA TODAY Sports. The payment was in line with the regulations that existed for departing staff at the time.
"Such regulations have been tightened since 2016 and the current staff regulations – which apply to all Uefa employees at whatever level – reflect those found in a modern, high-profile organisation."

Arsenal are reportedly continuing to monitor Bradley Barcola, but Liverpool have moved first with a fresh attempt to prise the winger away from Paris Saint-Germain.
According to L'Equipe, Liverpool have submitted a bid worth an estimated €115 million for the France international as they step up their efforts to complete one of the biggest transfers of the summer.
The French newspaper reports that the proposal is expected to be rejected, but says it represents a significant shift in negotiations after several days of discussions between the clubs.
L'Equipe writes: "After several days of discussions, the Reds decided to move into a more concrete phase by sending a proposal estimated at €115 million to Paris-Saint-Germain for the French international. It should be refused, but is not trivial."
