Dame Meera Syal has said she "almost gave up" her career after being **** ually harassed and **** aulted by two "predators" within the media industry.
"I was out of work, I was homeless, sleeping on people's floors, and then these two things happened in quite quick succession," the Wolverhampton-born star said in a candid interview with BBC Asian Network's Amber Haque.
In her new memoir, Vigilauntie, which was published on Thursday, the actress shared that both incidents happened in her 20s, as she was struggling to secure a role.
Now aged 65, she has opened up about the harrowing experiences and reflected on how she overcame them to become one of the most well-known faces on British TV.

Among the selection of young players that Manchester City sent out on loan for the 2026-27 season, Divine Mukasa joined West Ham. Mukasa joined the Hammers on a season-long loan. The young attacking midfielder had made three appearances for Nuno Espirito Santo's side before West Ham's Championship fixture against Wolves last night at the London Stadium. By the time that match ended, Mukasa had exploded into life as he scored a spectacular brace to help his team pick up a valuable 4-2 win over Wolves.
West Ham picked up three precious points against Wolverhampton with a 4-2 win at the London Stadium last night. The Hammers weren't at their best, but they came away from the match with a precious three points. Divine Mukasa was the star of the show for West Ham as his brace and overall performance helped inspire his team to victory.
Divine Mukasa opened the scoring for West Ham in the 33rd minute of last night's match. His first goal can only be described as a wonder strike. Mukasa received possession around 25 yards out from goal. He took two touches to steady himself to shoot. Mukasa unleashed an absolute rocket with his right foot which thundered in off the cross bar to give Wolves keeper José St no hope of making a save. Divine Mukasa's goal was one which fully displayed his undoubted talent and poise.
Divine Mukasa would add his second goal of the night in the 53rd minute. Mukasa received the ball just inside the Wolves penalty. He cut inside onto his left foot and his shot took a deflection before hitting the back of the net. Mukasa's second goal of last night's match was a fitting reward for a fine overall display from him.
West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo was thrilled with Divine Mukasa's all-round display against Wolves. The West Ham manager was thrilled with Mukasa's work out of possession, his passing and the positions he took up in midfield. He explained after Mukasa starred at the London Stadium last night: "I'm delighted, not only for the goals but the way he played, the positions he took in the middle of the park. He is a young player with a lot of things to improve but I'm delighted to have him."

The husband of a renowned ballroom dancer who needs 24/7 care after suffering a stroke said her first trip to the hairdressers since she fell ill had been a welcome "distraction".
Jane Bullock, who coached professionals for the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing, collapsed at her Wolverhampton home on 10 August 2025, after she finished teaching a class.
As a result, the once fit and healthy dancer lost half her sight and all the movement on the left side of her body, meaning she is often restricted to her bed.
Her husband Warren said her life had "completely changed" and it had been a difficult time for both of them.
"As time goes on, you start to have a realisation and accept some things, but other things she can't accept," he said.

Defeat for Stoke at Molineux on Saturday (12:30 BST) would see them lose their opening three games of a league season for the first time in 16 years.
Wolves were 3-1 winners at Preston last weekend to record their first away win in the league since April 2025 when they won at Manchester United.
Wolverhampton Wanderers have lost each of their past three league games against Stoke City, with this set to be their first since April 2012 in the Premier League (lost 2-1 away).
Stoke City have won two of their past four away league matches against Wolverhampton Wanderers (D1 L1), as many victories as across their prior 27 visits (D11 L14).
Wolves could draw four home league games in succession for the first time since April 2016, while after drawing with Blackburn in their opener, they are trying to avoid failing to win either of their opening two home matches of a second tier campaign for just the third time this century after 2004-05 and 2015-16.

Everton have been drawn against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the third round of the Carabao Cup for the second consecutive year. This came after beating Preston North End in a 4-0 jaunt earlier tonight. Wolves beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 to progress to the clash against the Blues.
Last season the Blues featured a weakened side against bottom dwellers Wolves who were yet to win a game at the time, but then slipped to a 2-0 defeat away from home to exit the tournament they are yet to win.
Carabao Cup Round Three fixtures will take place across two weeks (beginning 7th and 14th September), with fixtures in the Champions League (week beginning 7th September) and Europa League (week beginning 14th September) also scheduled during this period. The additional dates required in the calendar for European competitions are as a result of an increased number of games for the season, the same as last year.
The eight teams competing in European competitions this season will be drawn separately in a pre-draw to keep them apart from the rest of the third round teams tonight. Since UEFA competitions fixtures cannot be rescheduled, additional rules for the third round of the Carabao Cup had been introduced for the draw tonight. Clubs taking part in the Champions League or Europa League cannot be drawn against each other in the Carabao Cup third round.
The Blues have never won this competition in their 141-year history, but have been beaten finalists twice, against Aston Villa in 1977 and to Liverpool in 1984. Their run in the tournament last season lasted until the Third Round when they lost at home to Southampton in a penalty shootout, with newest signing Tyler Dibling a second half substitute in that game.

Children across the country may have been inspired, by recent European Athletics Championships and the feats of athletes like British sprinters Amy Hunt and Matthew Hudson-Smith, to take up the sport.
But is the sport ready for them? One club not far from the venue which hosted the championships said they were struggling to cope with the interest.
A summer camp run by the Wolverhampton and Bilston Athletics Club was well-attended which their chairman, Colin Thompson, said "was inspired by" the Birmingham event.
"That helps us, but what happens is people come down, having been inspired by the sport, only to find that we can't accommodate them through lack of coaches," he added.
The club has lost four coaches over the last year and struggles to maintain their track, due to local plant life.

Fulham welcome Chelsea to Craven Cottage in the West London derby this evening, with both sides entering new beginnings on the managerial front.
In July, Fulham announced the appointment of Álvaro Arbeloa as the new head coach, taking over from Marco Silva, who spent five years at the club and is now at Benfica. Last season, Arbeloa took over Real Madrid from Xabi Alonso, whom he faces in the capital, but ultimately couldn't salvage any silverware for the Spanish giants.
The Cottagers have had a busy summer, with 22-year-old striker Gonzalo Gonzalo García joining the club from Real Madrid for £34 million, along with Cesar Palacios, Shea Charles and Jonah Kusi-Aware. Significant outgoings include Saša Lukić and Issa Diop to recently promoted Ipswich Town, while Harry Wilson left on a free transfer to Leeds United and Raúl Jiménez returned to Wolverhampton in the Championship.
Ahead of the derby under the lights, the Fulham boss spoke to the media, saying, "I know how important that game is for our supporters.
"It's also very important for everyone at the club, for us, for players, for me. It's the first game of the season, the first game at Craven Cottage, so we are ready, we are excited, and of course we can't wait for that game."

Michael Olise scored a goal and created another as Bayern Munich won 2-1 at old foes Borussia Dortmund in the season-opening German Supercup on Saturday.
After a starring role with France at the World Cup, Olise was Bayern's most dangerous attacker, regularly tearing down the right flank.
He found makeshift midfielder Nathaniel Brown for Bayern's 28th-minute opener and then scored one of his own just before the break.
A late goal for former Wolverhampton striker Fabio Silva brought Dortmund closer and the hosts could have levelled deep into stoppage time but Maximilian Beier scuffed a golden chance when through on goal.
Bayern were rusty and barely resembled the barnstorming side which lost just once domestically last season but had enough quality to see off a rebuilding Dortmund team playing in the season opener for the first time since 2021.

Italy U21 star Michael Kayode was on hand to send Brentford 3-0 up against Tottenham Hotspur in their first Premier League game of the 2026-27 season, piling more misery on Roberto De Zerbi in the Spurs dugout.
Kayode was in the right place at the right time to get a leg to the ball from the second phase of a corner to put Brentford 3-0 up against Tottenham three minutes into the second half at the Gtech Community Stadium.
His effort came after first-half strikes from Keane Lewis-Potter and Vitaly Janelt.
This was Kayode's second ever goal in the English top flight; his first coming in a 2-2 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers in March earlier this year. He put pen to paper on a long-term contract extension with Brentford earlier this summer, committing his future to the Bees until the summer of 2032.
His goal came against an Italian head coach in Roberto De Zerbi. Italy international Sandro Tonali was also included in the Tottenham starting line-up.

Having spent the last season on loan at Leicester City, Jordan James (22) has once again returned to the EFL Championship, this time signing for Wolverhampton Wanderers.
James joined Stade Rennais from Birmingham City for a reported €5m fee back in the summer of 2024. However, the Wales international has struggled for game time at Roazhon Park. He has made just 25 appearances for the Breton club. Last season, he spent the season out on loan at Leicester City. The season ended in a failure and a relegation to League One.
Once again, James has been loaned out to a club relegated from the Premier League, Wolves. The Welsh midfielder has joined the club on a season-long loan deal from Rennes. His move to Molineux also includes the option to make the move permanent at the end of the campaign, as confirmed by the English club in Wednesday's press release.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have signed Wales midfielder Jordan James on loan with an option to buy at the end of the season.
The 26-times capped international returns to the Midlands almost two years on from leaving boyhood club Birmingham City for French Ligue 1 club Rennes in a reported £4m deal.
James spent last season back in England on loan in the East Midlands at Leicester City. But, despite his 11 goals from midfield, helping him to be voted player of the season, the Foxes were relegated to League One.
James featured 24 times for Rennes in 2024-25 across all competitions while in the Brittany capital.
"Jordan is a box-to-box midfielder, with a lot of quality, and knows the Championship well which is important for us," head coach Cesar Peixoto told Wolves' website.

Thirty-three days after the World Cup ended, the Premier League season begins on Aug. 21, filled with storylines as usual.
Can ***** nal repeat? Which big clubs will bounce back and which will struggle? How will all the new managers fare? Will a newly-promoted team stay up? Can anyone score more goals than Erling Haaland?
These questions will take nine drama-filled months to answer, though clues lie in last season's numbers. Each team's players have changed to some extent, but enough holdovers remain to use underlying stats as part of this season's projections.
For example, before last season Wolverhampton's underlying numbers had suggested relegation danger for several years, and Bournemouth's hinted at the ability to push for Champions League. Both omens came to fruition, as Wolves finally went down, and the Cherries took sixth.
The numbers aren't foolproof, of course. No stats indicated Tottenham would nearly get relegated, that Chelsea would barely finish in the top half, or that ***** nal would have perhaps the best set-piece season ever. That's the fun in sports of course. You never quite know what you're going to get, but that doesn't prevent us from taking our best shots.

People who use a cycling club had been "upset" and "outraged" that more than £14,000 worth of equipment was taken after a break-in.
Wolverhampton Wheelers, which is run by volunteers, said it thought 10 bicycles had been stolen at Aldersley stadium between Saturday night and Sunday morning.
The club, founded in 1891, said specialist track bikes had been among items taken from a storage unit and the theft would impact its ability to deliver sessions.
Chair Jodie Parker said it "had to tell people not to come on Monday night, because there was no bike for them".
The Wheelers have 14 volunteer coaches and runs sessions four times a week, with money coming from more than 130 members.

Walsall have completed the signing of former Everton defender Roman Dixon on a two-year contract, with a club option of a further year.
The 21-year-old right-back was released by the Toffees at the end of last season, bringing to an end a ten-year ****** ociation with the Premier League club.
Dixon spent the second half of last season on loan at League One side Stockport County, but had previously also gained first-team exposure with Everton, for whom he made three senior appearances.

João Palhinha is not in Vincent Kompany's plans this season for Bayern Munich despite the midfielder saying he was ready to stay and fight for his place after returning from a relatively solid loan spell with Tottenham. For a decent while, he was rumored with a potential move back to Portugal, but neither Sporting CP or Benfica are currently able to afford his wages and Aston Villa have been the club most recently linked with the Portuguese midfielder.
Unai Emery is an admirer of Palinha's and is looking to fill the spot left by Youri Tielemans, who left for Manchester United. Additionally, playmaker Morgan Rogers has left for Chelsea, which leaves another gap in Emery's midfield and while they have already brought in João Gomes from Wolverhampton Wanderers, there's still a void to be filled.
Villa could now face competitions from a Premier League rival for Palhinha, though. Per information from TalkSport (via iMiaSanMia), Newcastle United have emerged as a potential suitor for the midfielder as new manager Matthias Jaissle really seems him as a good fit for his midfield. In addition to the departure of manager Eddie Howe, The Magpies have already lost Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, Sandro Tonali to Tottenham, and most recently, Bruno Guimarães to ******* nal. Jaissle now has find the right puzzle pieces in the remainder of the summer transfer window and he sees Palhinha as a viable option.
With the players Newcastle have lost, experience in the Premier League is exactly what he's looking for — something Palhinha has plenty of with his tenures at Tottenham and Fulham. They'll really have to fight Villa for his signature, though, as Bayern have the luxury of waiting to see who'll be willing to pay a higher fee for him since they prefer a permanent sale over another loan option.
For Newcastle, they'll want to avoid another situation similar to what happened with Johan Manzambi, who wound up going to Villa from SC Freiburg after all indications were pointing towards a move to Newcastle. A higher wage paid and the prospect of Champions League football from this season after the UEFA Supercup against Paris Saint-Germain was one of the huge selling points for Manzambi after he impressed with Switzerland at the World Cup, so Newcastle have the ball in their court when it comes to Palhinha.

Newly-promoted Coventry City have made enquiries over a move for Olympique de Marseille midfielder Angel Gomes (25), who is hoping to return to the Premier League this summer, according to L'Équipe.
Frank Lampard's side are among the clubs to have sounded out Gomes' situation, with Marseille prepared to allow the England international to leave before the end of the transfer window.
Gomes featured regularly during OM's pre-season preparations and was used as a No.10 by Bruno Genesio during Wednesday's 3-0 friendly victory over Al Shahania, operating ahead of the Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Tochukwu Nnadi in a midfield pairing.
However, the former Manchester United midfielder's priority is to secure another opportunity in England. Gomes spent the second half of last season on loan at Wolverhampton Wanderers, although his spell at Molineux proved difficult.
Despite that experience, the 25-year-old remains keen to establish himself in the Premier League. Coventry, promoted to the top flight this summer, have now emerged as one potential destination.

Man City have made direct contact with Pedro Neto's camp over a possible summer move
No bid has been sent to Chelsea yet and no official club-to-club talks have taken place
Tottenham also have Neto on their list as a back-up option to Savinho
Manchester City have made direct contact with the camp of Chelsea winger Pedro Neto as they explore a possible summer move for the Portugal international, as per a new report.
The 26-year-old joined Chelsea from Wolverhampton in August 2024 and has established himself as one of the Premier League's more dynamic wide options, with his pace, directness and ability to carry the ball in tight ******* es making him an attractive proposition for clubs in the market for a wide attacker capable of creating and converting chances.

Manchester City have opened direct talks with the representatives of Chelsea winger Pedro Neto, beginning preliminary discussions over a potential summer move to the Etihad Stadium, according to Fabrizio Romano. Enzo Maresca and Xabi Alonso are at the Etihad Stadium and Stamford Bridge.
Last season's Premier League runners-up have placed the 26-year-old Portuguese international high on their shortlist as part of contingency planning for Savinho. With Tottenham Hotspur pushing aggressively to sign the Brazilian winger, City decision-makers are actively exploring alternatives. Neto's direct running, explosive pace, and Premier League pedigree make him an appealing target for City's coaching staff.
However, the situation is complicated by an interconnected transfer domino involving Tottenham. While Spurs are pushing to finalise a deal for Savinho, they also have Neto on their shortlist as a primary backup option should talks with Manchester City stall. As a result, both Premier League heavyweights are monitoring the Portuguese forward's availability closely.
Any potential deal will ultimately hinge on Chelsea's valuation. Having invested heavily to sign Neto from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a long-term contract, the Stamford Bridge hierarchy hold strong leverage. While Chelsea are open to streamlining their forward options to fund summer targets, they will not sanction a departure unless their price is met in full.
Talks between Manchester City and Neto's representatives remain exploratory at this stage as all parties wait for the Savinho situation to unfold. If Tottenham complete a deal for the Brazilian, City are expected to swiftly formalise their pursuit of Neto and open official negotiations with Chelsea for Neto, who racked up 10 goals and as many ***** ists across all competitions last season.

A Wolverhampton Wanderers' fan group has launched a special shirt to mark the club's 150th anniversary season.
Four friends who are part of Old Gold Pack said they spent months bringing their concept to life to mark the anniversary in 2027 and although it had been a lot of work, it was "an absolute joy to get it done".
The majority of the profits from the sale of the shirt are to be donated to Wolverhampton hospice charity Compton Care.
Kieran Newey from the group said to see fans wearing the shirt as the new season kicks off will be "crazy".
"We've always been really big fans of football culture and we'd always talked about designing a football shirt," he said.

AZ striker Troy Parrott is reportedly being tracked by several European clubs, as well as Eredivisie champions PSV.
After a brilliant personal season in Alkmaar, the Irish international scored 31 goals and registered 10 ****** ists in all competitions last term – not to mention 16 goals in 28 Eredivisie games, and 10 goals in 15 Europa Conference League outings.

Jacobs has also mentioned Ajax, but Tolu Arokodare's signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers has taken them out of the running. The 24-year-old Parrott is under contract in Alkmaar until 2029, and AZ hopes to receive a large fee.
The club had hoped for a record fee in January. The current record is held by Tijjani Reijnders, who moved to AC Milan for nearly 25 million euros.
