The Mets dropped the middle game of their three-game set with the Padres, 5-2.
The Mets' string of good luck somewhat dried up tonight, although starter Zac Thornton gave them a perfectly cromulent start, five inning performance, allowing three earned runs on two home runs, while striking out seven and walking just one. Thornton has bent but not broke in many of his starts thus far, and this start continued that trend.
In fact, if Thornton had been able to control Fernando Tatis Jr., his start would've looked quite different. Tatis drilled two home runs in the first five innings, driving in three runs and putting the Padres up ahead enough that he didn't need the insurance runs provided by his teammates. But alas, Tatis has woken up his bat in the second half, and Thornton was on the other side of that tonight.
The sole Mets' offense came from solo home runs from Luis Torrens and Luis Robert Jr. The Torrens renaissance continues, and while Robert is more than likely not a Met next season, it's nice to see the Mets producing up and down the lineup. Bo Bichette collected two hits, and first baseman [checks notes] Christopher Morel collected one hit as well. But aside from a few walks, that's all folks.
Some of that can be credited to Robbie Ray, who looked really good over his six innings of work, allowing just three hits, three walks, and striking out four. He wasn't overpowering, but he kept the Mets off-balance enough to limit their productivity.

San Diego Padres outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. pulled double duty on Tuesday night against the New York Mets.
New York's starting pitcher Zac Thornton threw only one pitch to Tatis Jr. in the top of the first inning to begin the game. The Padres outfielder launched it 452 ft. to left center, giving San Diego the early 1-0 lead.
Tatis Jr. wasn't done.
In the bottom of the second, the Mets had loaded the bases. Francisco Alvarez, Christopher Morel, and A.J. Ewing drew walks while Luis Torrens grounded into a fielder's choice, which saw Alvarez thrown out at home, but kept the bases loaded.
New York's star shortstop Francisco Lindor came to the plate. He launched a 91 mph sinker to right field, a hit that looked destined for the outfield seats.

In the past two weeks, the Mets have swept two series and only lost one series. They were shut out in two of their three losses in the past 12 games, but other than that, the offense has ironically produced considerably better since losing Juan Soto. Francisco Lindor has been raking, Bo Bichette earned what I think is his first fireball of the year, Luis Torrens has gone on a power surge, and several guys who had been performing poorly are trending upwards.

PITTSBURGH — Bubba Chandler had one of his best starts and the Pirates' offense broke out in a 9-0 win over the Mets at PNC Park on Saturday night to snap a four-game skid.
Bottom 1st, 3-0 PIT: The Pirates (58-61) struck for three early runs against Robert Stock (0-2). With the bases loaded and one out, Nick Gonzales plated Jake Mangum on a groundout to the right of the pitcher's mound. Ronny Simon followed by keeping a ball fair inside the third base bag for a two-run double.
Bottom 3rd, 4-0 PIT: Simon bunted for a hit, stole second and raced home to score on Jacob Gonzalez's single to right field.
Bottom 4th, 8-0 PIT: The first six men up to plate all reached safely and the Pirates struck for four more runs. Mangum doubled home Henry Davis and scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded. Later on, Gonzales plated a pair with a double to right.
Bottom 7th, 9-0 PIT: Brandon Lowe hit a solo home run off Mets catcher Luis Torrens, who was called upon in the seventh. The blast was Lowe's team-high 25th this season.

The Mets racked up 18 hits on their way to their third win and series sweep against the Guardians, 13-6. Nolan McLean was good for most of his outing, and when he needed to come out after the fifth inning, the bullpen smothered the Guardians' hitters, allowing two hits and one run.
The first inning was deceptively quiet for the Mets. With two outs, Luis Robert, Jr. sneaked a ground ball into left field for a single, but Carson Benge struck out immediately after that. When McLean took the mound for the bottom of the inning he issued two walks back-to-back, and then allowed a line-drive single to Nathaniel Lowe to load the bases. After this, Angel Martínez managed an RBI single on a grounder to center field that scored Chase DeLauter and José Ramírez. After getting the second out, McLean gave up another single, this one on a fly ball smacked into left field by Petey Halpin. Fortunately, McLean got Patrick Bailey to fly out right after that, and the inning ended with the Guardians leading 2-0.
In the second inning, Marcus Semien responded by bouncing a home run off the top of the fence, slightly confusing the announcers. Next up, Eric Wagaman lined a single into center field, setting up Luis Torrens to drive a two-run home run into right field, stunning new Guardians pitcher Foster Griffin and giving the Mets the lead. McLean continued to struggle slightly with walks, allowing one to Travis Bazzana. Bazzana stole second base after Torrens' throw to second was a bit too high, but he was stranded there when Wagaman dove to stop a ground ball from Ramírez and got it to McLean in time for the third out. The score remained Mets 3, Guardians 2 at the end of the inning.
Bo Bichette walked to lead off the third inning but was caught in a fielder's choice out when Robert grounded to third softly. With Robert on first, Carson Benge smacked an RBI triple off the wall above Halpin's head, scoring Robert. Francisco Alvarez walked as well, and Semien scored Benge on a sac fly into left field for the second out. Wagaman struck out for the third out, but after Nolan McLean retired the batters in order at the bottom of the inning, the score was Mets 5, Guardians 2.
With two outs in the fourth inning, Lindor drove a single into left field, and Bichette doubled on another line drive, sending Lindor to third base. However, Robert flied out to right field to end the half-inning and strand the pair in scoring position. McLean once again worked a 1-2-3 inning. Matt Festa replaced Foster Griffin in the top of the fifth inning and gave up another walk to Alvarez with one out. Semien then rolled a double down the left field line, and Alvarez slid into to third. Jared Young pinch-hit for Wagaman and threaded an RBI single through the infielders into left field, scoring Alvarez. Young then stole second base completely uncontested. However, the next two outs came back-to-back to strand the runners in scoring position again.

CLEVELAND — When the Mets offense is clicking, they have dominated this season.
With Monday night's 6-2 victory, they are now 33-5 this season when they have scored five or more runs. The only problem is that their 38 games with that many runs are the fewest in the National League.
The Mets will be hoping to continue to find that level of production in the second game of the series at 6:40 p.m. on Wednesday night at Progressive Field.
In Monday's win, Luis Torrens homered and drove in four runs. Carson Benge tagged a 451-foot home run - the longest blast at Progressive Field since Aaron Judge on April 14, 2024. Bo Bichette added his first home run since June 24.
The Mets will be hoping that is a sign of a changing tide following the MLB trade deadline when they dealt eight major league players, including seven pitchers.

CLEVELAND — The new-look Mets made a strong first impression in their first game after the trade deadline on Tuesday night.
Luis Torrens drove in four runs, Sean Manaea notched a quality start and Nate Lavender and Kodai Senga excelled in new bullpen roles.
Now, the Mets will aim for the series win at 6:40 p.m. on Wednesday night at Progressive Field.
It would be the Mets' second series win in their last three. They enter the day with a 48-66 record.
Christian Scott will be on the mound for the Mets on the heels of a hard-luck loss to the Braves last time around.

With a 37-53 record that has them just a half-game ahead of the worst record in the National League, the Mets are set to be sellers at the deadline. And Will Sammon of the Athletic and Chelsea Janes of SNY have provided some insight into the organization’s thinking as the August 3 trade deadline approaches.
Sammon writes that teams will be interested in trading for one of the Mets’ catchers, but he sees a move of either Francisco Alvarez or Luis Torrens as unlikely. He also brings up the question of whether or not the team will trade Luke Weaver, who is under team control through the end of the 2027 season on a $12.5 million salary. And he mentions that the team is expected to trade Brooks Raley and A.J Minter, while noting that it seems very unlikely that Bo Bichette will be dealt given his underwhelming season, massive salary, and no-trade clause.
Janes mentions some of the same names in writing that players on expiring contracts will be available, adding Freddy Peralta, Clay Holmes, and Tyrone Taylor to the aforementioned pair of left-handed relievers. She says that the Mets will prioritize getting the best players in return—regardless of how close they are to the big leagues or what position they play. She floats the idea of other relievers like Huascar Brazobán and Devin Williams having appeal on the trade market, and she writes that the Mets aren’t in a rush to start making trades, as front offices are heavily focused on the upcoming amateur draft.

The Mets were quiet offensively again tonight in a game where the top of the lineup did not hit much and lost 3-2 to the Padres. Nolan McLean struggled with walks but only allowed one run again.
In the second inning, Marcus Semien walked, and A.J. Ewing hit a single into right field, bouncing it off of first base. Brett Baty followed up two batters later by smacking an RBI single past second base into center field, allowing Semien to score. In the bottom of the second, Nolan McLean allowed a two-out walk to Xander Bogaerts after retiring the first five batters he saw. However, McLean **** isted Jared Young in ending the inning when Miguel Andujar grounded out during the next at-bat.
In the third inning, McLean walked the leadoff hitter, Sung-Mun Song, who promptly stole second base. After Freddy Fermin bunted for a pop out, McLean threw a pitch to Fernando Tatis, Jr and stumbled, landing awkwardly. Thankfully, he was okay, but Tatis then tapped a single that bounced off of second base and angled into right field, scoring Song and tying the game. McLean allowed another two-out walk, this time to Ty France. McLean stranded both runners in the end, but his pitch count soared during the third inning.
Semien hit a ground ball to left field for a single in the fourth inning, only to be caught stealing during the next at-bat. Ewing walked and tried to steal, but Mark Vientos struck out, ending the inning, which was made confusing when Fermin threw to second base anyway.
In the fifth inning, McLean allowed a single from Song, and then a sacrifice bunt from Fermin moved Song to second base. Tatis smacked a single on a ground ball that Bo Bichette stopped from turning into an RBI, to the detriment of his left shoulder. After an injury delay and despite his obvious pain, Bichette stayed in the game. Song stayed at second base until Jackson Merrill flied out and Song moved to third. Tatis tried to steal second base, and Luis Torrens faked a throw. Song tried to steal home, as he realized what was happening too late. He turned around, but was ultimately caught stealing in a rundown with throws from Torrens to Baty to McLean. Bichette ultimately led off the top of the sixth inning with a groundout.
