NEW YORK, Aug 25 (Reuters) - About 14% of employers in the United States have already or plan to drop GLP-1 drugs in 2027, as companies see rising healthcare costs, according to a survey released on Tuesday by the Business Group on Health.
Healthcare costs are set to increase 9.2% if employers do not make changes to manage costs in 2027, up from 8.5% in 2026, the group said. Two-thirds of employers surveyed said they saw rising utilization of the drugs.
GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, such as Novo Nordisk's Wegovy and Eli Lilly's Zepbound and Foundayo, help people lose weight by mimicking a hormone that keeps the stomach feeling full. Zepbound and Wegovy cost $499 and $1,349.02, respectively, per month according to list prices on manufacturer websites.
"This represents an unfortunate new reality for employers, who now face growing difficulty in budgeting and forecasting," said Ellen Kelsay, president of the Business Group on Health. "It's a call to take a more disruptive approach and rethink how to deliver value and improved health outcomes."

Cannabis (or cannabinoid) hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) is as serious as it sounds. The condition, which can cause excessive vomiting with recurring bouts of severe stomach pain and nausea, was first detected in Australia two decades ago. Some have referred to a combination of CHS symptoms – screaming, due to the intense pain, and vomiting – as "scromiting."

On August 10, Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY)'s weight-loss pill Foundayo won approval in the UK, becoming the first country in Europe to clear the drug for both weight management and type 2 diabetes. It's only the second GLP-1 pill approved in Europe, arriving two months after Novo Nordisk A/S (NYSE:NVO)'s Wegovy pill got its own UK approval in June.
Novo already has a head start in the European pill market and in patient numbers worldwide. Lilly is betting that a pill with no food restrictions can close that gap.
That raises the real question: can Lilly's convenience edge actually win over doctors and patients fast enough to catch up, or does Novo Nordisk A/S (NYSE:NVO)'s lead already look too big to close?
Foundayo can be taken at any time of day without food or water restrictions, unlike the Wegovy pill, which must be taken on an empty stomach with a 30-minute wait before eating. Lilly said the drug will launch in the UK later this month through private prescription, priced below Mounjaro's roughly £330 monthly list price. Foundayo already brought in $98 million in US sales last quarter. The Orioles entered trade deadline day earlier this week with a 2.5 game deficit to the third wild card spot in the American League. We have seen the myriad flaws of the team through the year and on a rational level understand the case not to push aggressively to make something happen this season.
I don't think I was the only one hoping the Orioles would decide to just let it ride with the roster, maybe add a piece or two who will be able to help next year too while thinning out the mid-range prospect depth that has to be added to the 40-man roster so it's not lost in the Rule 5 draft. Mike Elias had other ideas, trading away three players who figured to be a part of next year's team, headlined by Adley Rutschman. This is still a tough one to stomach.
In our poll this week, I asked Orioles fans, clearly feeling raw in the aftermath of the Rutschman trade, when they think that our favorite baseball team will make it back into the postseason. These were the results:

Nate Rouette and his brother Nelson went shark fishing on Cape Cod hoping for an exciting catch, but were shocked by what they reeled in -- a tropical species of shark with a reputation for eating everything it can swallow.
The brothers, longtime sport fishermen who live in Massachusetts, released a juvenile tiger shark in late July after catching it from a beach. The five-foot shark is far more common in warmer, southern waters such as the Caribbean Sea, and scientists said its appearance off Falmouth, Massachusetts, is an indicator of warming seas caused by climate change.
Nate and Nelson said the late-night catch was a thrill after hours of seeking far more common brown sharks.
"And I saw those horizontal lines, indicating it was a tiger shark, which was super cool," said Nate, who is the social media manager for On The Water magazine. "Immediately I started yelling to my brother, 'It's a tiger, it's a tiger shark!' And he was in disbelief."
The Rouette brothers caught a young specimen of a shark that can grow to more than 15 feet (4.6 meters) and 1,400 pounds (635 kilograms). Tiger sharks eat a wide array of other ocean life, including fish, crustaceans and birds, and are famous for sometimes eating man-made items such as old license plates and shoes that are later found in their stomachs. The adults are also more dangerous to humans than most shark species, though unprovoked fatal bites are rare.

Draymond Green had a special guest on "The Draymond Green Show" this week, as he was joined by Indiana Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle, a one-time NBA champion as a player with the Boston Celtics (1985-86) and a one-time championship as a coach with the Dallas Mavericks (2010-11).
During the appearance, Carlisle spoke about how all-time NBA players would dominate regardless of the era that they played in. In doing so, Carlisle gave Green a lofty comparison, saying, "Greatness is going to be great regardless of the era. You are going to try to tell me that (Bill) Russell wouldn't be great in this era? Russell, the guy who threw up before every game because he couldn't stomach the idea of losing? And he had such an impact on winning; can you imagine having that guy leading your team? That was the early version of Draymond Green."

Next up in the opponent preview series is the Michigan Wolverines. After an up-and-down season, which ended in the firing of Sherrone Moore and the first loss to Ohio State since 2019, Michigan decided to hire longtime Utah coach Kyle Whittingham. The Wolverines will look to put years of on- and off-the-field scandals behind them and return to their identity of being tough and physical in the trenches.
Rutgers has had an interesting history with the Wolverines, sealing their first-ever Big Ten victory over UM in 2014 with Kemoko Turay blocking a late field goal attempt to preserve a 26-24 win and prompting a field storm at SHI Stadium. A pit in my stomach formed last night in the train as I read Hugging Face's latest blog post on how its servers got hacked by OpenAI's models in early July. I had printed out the 23-page report for the ride since service can be spotty underground. Seeing the story laid out in physical form underscored just how outrageous it is. I wondered if the person next to me was peering over my shoulder at my strange, stapled Sci-Fi novel on the first significant autonomous AI hack.
Alongside the Hugging Face report, OpenAI published a few more details in a seven-bullet-point update to its July 21 blog that revealed its models' involvement in the incident. OpenAI contributed to Hugging Face's post-mortem, and said it plans to publish more of its side of the story "in the coming weeks" after completing a thorough internal review. OpenAI faces significant pressure to do so from security researchers, executives, and, well, just about everyone in the AI industry to share learnings and ensure the proper guardrails are in place going forward.
How OpenAI's technology escaped a sandbox and hacked into another company is a remarkable story, and one in which the details are still coming in piecemeal. But here's what we know so far and what we're still waiting to find out.

"There was only ever one cancellation when I was carrying William, the visit to the Duchy of Cornwall's estate," she continued, according to the book, which was released in 2017. "And I was made to feel so guilty by my husband for that."
The pressure came to a head in early 1982 while they were staying at Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, England. "Charles said I was crying wolf and I said I felt so desperate and I was crying my eyes out and he said: 'I'm not going to listen. You're always doing this to me. Connor Thomas got thrown to the wolves on Monday night, and the Mets' broadcast booth could barely stomach watching it happen.
The Braves reliever was left in to twist against New York's lineup long after the outcome had been decided, and by the time Atlanta finally mercy-killed the outing, Thomas had been shelled for 11 earned runs — the most any reliever has allowed in a major-league game in more than half a decade — according to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo.
His final line read: 2 2/3 innings, 10 hits, 11 runs, five walks, two strikeouts, three home runs, 78 pitches.
As Gary Cohen mentioned on the SNY broadcast of New York's 14-3 win, Atlanta had ground through five consecutive one-run games in the days before Monday, and rather than burn another arm in a game that was already lost, the Braves made the call to sacrifice Thomas to the baseball gods.
The 28-year-old left-hander — a Tifton, Georgia, native and Georgia Tech product who made his MLB debut with the Brewers back in 2025 — had only been summoned from the minors about two days prior. He's never been treated as a top prospect, and he entered Monday having not thrown more than 70 pitches in a single appearance since he was a starter for St. Louis' Triple-A Memphis affiliate back in September 2023 — more than 1,000 days ago.

SINGAPORE, July 24 (Reuters) - For months, Chinese chip manufacturer ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) had been hiking prices on Huawei, one of the country's biggest technology companies. The chipmaker held firm when Huawei demanded relief from the escalating costs, according to two people familiar with the matter.
The standoff came to a head on CXMT's factory floor in June. A group of engineers from a chipmaking-equipment vendor with deep strategic ties to Huawei had been working in the cleanrooms at CXMT's core research and development zone in Hefei, Anhui province. Without warning, CXMT ordered the engineers, who had been helping with equipment maintenance, to pack their tools and leave the factory floor immediately, the two sources said.
Executives at the Huawei-connected equipment vendor, SiCarrier, concluded the confrontation was the result of the power struggle between CXMT and Huawei, the people told Reuters. The companies still do business but the engineers haven't been allowed back into the R&D zone, the two people said.
CXMT, Huawei and SiCarrier didn't respond to questions about the incident.
The clash illustrates the changing dynamics of China's semiconductor industry. CXMT has risen to become the world's fourth-biggest maker of memory, including the DRAM variety used in smartphones, laptops and servers. Now, the company is powerful enough to charge prices even Huawei can't stomach.
