The Los Angeles Lakers have done lots of work this summer to remodel their roster around Luka Doncic after LeBron James and several other rotation players left. But that doesn't necessarily mean their current roster is the one they will take with them into training camp when the summer ends.
They still don't have a legitimate starting two-way wing or forward, and they reportedly are looking for another serviceable center to back up Walker Kessler. Of course, by this point in the offseason, the pickings are slim, either via free agency or trade.
Dan Woike of The Athletic outlined the Lakers' options as far as picking up another big man, and he noted that Jalen Smith of the Chicago Bulls "has some fans" within the Lakers organization, while also adding the concerns that would come with acquiring him.
"Smith has some fans within the organization because he plays with motor and has worked himself into a pretty good outside shooter," Woike wrote. "But Smith is expensive (one-year, $9.5 million remaining on his deal) and undersized at 6 foot 8. The previous Bulls' regime was a fan of his, which puts his actual availability into question."
Smith, 26, was the No. 10 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft and can play both the 4 and 5 positions. This past season, he averaged 10.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 0.8 blocks in 20.7 minutes a game while making 37.3% of his 3-point attempts. He has a wingspan of at least 7-foot-1, and while he isn't a freakish athlete, he has solid athleticism and runs the floor well.

He shared his concern about the rise of Islam during a Monday interview on right-wing pundit Benny Johnson's show.
Woods — one of the few outspoken conservatives in Hollywood — said he believed the election of democratic socialist and Muslim Zohran Mamdani (D) as New York City's mayor was "the most dangerous event" in modern American history. He said it signaled the downfall of the nation.
"Look, I think America is the greatest human endeavor in the history of humankind. I think it's in terrible trouble. I mean, the city where the World Trade Center and the people in it were slaughtered and destroyed, how you could ever allow this Muslim invasion and cancer?" Woods asked.

The final few weeks of the summer transfer window will be busy for Real Madrid, with signings and exits expected. In terms of incomings, Yan Diomande and Rodri are wanted, while there are several first team players that have been earmarked as candidates to leave before the end of next month.
Raul Asencio, Eduardo Camavinga and Franco Mastantuono (loan) are players that Real Madrid want to move on, while they could also be convinced to sell Gonzalo Garcia amid strong interest from Alvaro Arbeloa's Fulham. The Orioles have less than a week to decide whether they'll be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline. Their two series before that Aug. 3 date, a three-game trip to Detroit and three at home against the Phillies, could be critically important for deciding the near-term direction of the club.
Last night, the O's looked like a team that plans to stay in the postseason race, winning the opener against the Tigers in a series with big wild card implications. Even with ace Kyle Bradish suffering a rare bad outing, the Birds used a 12-hit, three-homer offensive explosion and a superb combined effort from four relievers to secure an 8-5 victory. With so many teams jostling for position on the fringes of the wild card race, we're at the point where every win (and every loss) shuffles the Orioles' status in the pecking order. Their victory last night pulled them back within two games of the rained-out Guardians for the final wild card spot, and inched them a game behind the idle Twins. The O's also pulled even with the Mariners, who lost yesterday, and possibly a half game ahead of the Astros, who were trailing in Anaheim at the time of this writing.
When you see the standings laid out like that, it's more than reasonable to think that the Orioles have a good shot at earning a postseason spot. But all it takes is another losing streak and suddenly the O's could find themselves in a lousy position again. Two days from now, they could be four games out of wild card position and languishing behind three or four other teams once more. Glasgow hosts a slimmed-down version of the Commonwealth Games as athletes from 74 nations and territories compete for gold in the Scottish city.
Glasgow stepped in after the Australian state of Victoria backed out three years ago due to the cost of hosting the Games.
The 10-sport programme, including six Para sports, will feature athletics, gymnastics, cycling and swimming - and will take place across four Glasgow venues.
The 11,000-spectator Scotstoun Stadium will stage the athletics as well as the biggest home star of the Games, new mile world record holder Josh Kerr.
The Games will be shown live across TNT Sports and HBO Max, rather than on the BBC or terrestrial television.

Coming out of the All-Star break neck-and-neck with the Cleveland Guardians, the Chicago White Sox knew they had to hit the ground running. With two road series on deck against the Toronto Blue Jays and the Texas Rangers, winning each respective series was all that mattered and the White Sox did exactly that.
Thanks to a recent slip in form for the Guardians, the White Sox now hold a slim 1 1/2-game lead in the AL Central. With the Guardians having to face the Tampa Bay Rays and Cincinnati Reds on the road the next six games, the time is now for the White Sox, starting with this first game against the Houston Astros.
Another series win would likely keep their lead in the division before the big, bad New York Yankees come into town. With the Tampa Bay Rays and red-hot Boston Red Sox on deck after that, results are imperative here in this series.

The president of Commonwealth Sport, Dr. Donald Rukare, told AFP the Commonwealth Games remains a stage "where champions are made" as Glasgow prepares to host a slimmed down version of the event.
The Games were plunged into crisis when the Australian state of Victoria withdrew as hosts in July 2023, citing rising costs.
Glasgow also played host 12 years ago and was therefore in position to offer the solution of a condensed format using existing venues to minimise taxpayer costs.
A 10-sport and six para-sport event -- down from a 19-sport and eight para-sport programme four years ago in Birmingham -- begins on Thursday with King Charles set to attend the opening ceremony and declare the Games open.
"We had that dark cloud over us in terms of having no Games, but Glasgow stepped in. Scotland the brave as we say," said Rukare.

The 2026 MLB season has been unkind to starting pitcher for the New York Mets, Freddy Peralata. WASHINGTON, July 10 (Reuters) - A self-identified white supremacist in Pennsylvania was indicted by a federal grand jury after he threatened violence against a member of Congress, Muslims, transgender people and Democrats, the Department of Justice said on Friday.

Mohamed Salah's World Cup run has unfortunately ended, despite a strong and historic showing by the Egyptian national team. Questions, naturally, have now turned to where Salah might end up.
It has been **** umed for several years that Saudi Arabia could be a destination for the player, but that always seemed based more on the fact that Salah is Muslim, not on his personal preferences. And as of this writing, no serious links to Cristiano Ronaldo's the Saudi league have emerged.

Underperformance across most of the Magnificent Seven is giving ETFs built around smaller stocks a rare chance to beat the S&P 500 this year.
Five of the seven megacaps are trailing the index in 2026. The S&P 500 is up 10.9% year to date through July 9. Apple, with a 16.5% gain, and Alphabet, up 14.8%, are ahead of it, but Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta Platforms, and Tesla are all behind, and three of them are in the red for the year.
For most of the past few years, these stocks powered the bulk of the S&P 500's returns. They finished 2025 at roughly 35% of the S&P 500, and they sit at about a third of it today.
Their dominance is why plain exposure to the S&P 500, or to a broader fund like the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI), has been such a reliable bet. It also punished anyone who strayed from that setup, whether by layering on a mid- or small-cap fund like the iShares Core S&P Mid-Cap ETF (IJH) or the iShares Core S&P Small-Cap ETF (IJR), or by trimming the largest names with something like the Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF (RSP).
But this year, with the megacaps stalling, those same funds have found an opening. IJH is up 15.3% so far in 2026 and IJR is up 21.6%, both comfortably ahead of the index. RSP has outperformed too, though by a slimmer margin at 12.4%.
Taken together, the data shows smaller companies outrunning their larger counterparts as a group. That may come as a surprise given the magnitude of the AI boom—a boom the Magnificent Seven are spending heavily on and benefiting from.
The boom is real, but so are the questions around it. What kind of returns will the massive spending on AI generate? And how will AI reshape the long-term business models and competitive moats for the Mag-7?
The bigger winners at the stock level have been the semiconductors. There is a chip name inside the Magnificent Seven in Nvidia, but it has sharply lagged the rest of the industry this year. Broadcom, which entered 2026 in the top 10, has also trailed its semiconductor peers.
Micron Technology is the one that broke through, muscling into the top 10 on the back of a massive run tied to memory demand. Names like Intel, AMD, and Applied Materials have also soared.
But because these semis were a relatively small percentage of the S&P 500 entering the year, their surge has not lifted the index the way the Magnificent Seven's gains did in prior years.
Of course, none of this takes much away from the index itself. A double-digit first half is a strong showing in its own right, and it would take far more small-cap outperformance to undo years of large-cap dominance.
Whether that continues will likely come down to the same thing that opened the door in the first place, which is whether the Magnificent Seven keep lagging.

By keeping most of Michigan's team intact this offseason, it appears interim head coach Mike Boynton has earned the trust of the University and been awarded a two-year deal.
It has been less than a month since Dusty May left Michigan after winning a national championship and took a job in the NBA with the Dallas Mavericks. The University moved quickly to name Boynton the interim at the time, and he was handed the difficult task of retaining the roster that May had built, which many consider one of the strongest in the country and once again a Big Ten favorite.
Ohio State fans kept tabs on the story as no one likes it when their arch-rivals succeed, much less at the level that the Wolverines had done. With May in charge, it seemed like the Wolverines had the potential to be a thorn in the side of Ohio State for years to come. With Boynton, the future is unclear. Boynton, 44, is best known for his seven-year run as head coach at Oklahoma State. He went 119-109 with the Cowboys, highlighted by a 21-9 record in 2020-21.
After going 12-20 in 2023-24, Oklahoma State decided to part ways with its head coach, and he resurfaced as an ******* istant coach in Ann Arbor.

According to multiple reports, the Los Angeles Lakers met with free agent forward Jonathan ***** inga last Tuesday when NBA free agency officially opened and are still trying to land him. Khobi Price of the California Post reported that the Atlanta Hawks, the team ***** inga finished this past season with, are willing to do a sign-and-trade with Los Angeles to give it the 23-year-old.
But trades are never easy to consummate in the NBA, and the Lakers do have a big hole in terms of a starting two-way forward who is athletic. If they strike out on ***** inga, they need to have other options, and Price listed some potential ones, although it is unknown how realistic they are for the team.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, announced on Wednesday the state's intention to use a new state law to designate dozens of groups as terrorist organizations, a move that would still require approval by the Florida Cabinet, prompting legal objections from at least one of the groups.
HB 1471 was signed into law earlier this year and went into effect on Wednesday.
The governor said the state plans to implement its new statutory authority to "identify, designate, and combat terrorist organizations operating in Florida" in the first use of powers established under the legislation.
Florida officials plan to designate more than 90 groups as terrorist organizations, including the Council on American-Islamic Relations the Muslim Brotherhood and Antifa, though the proposed designations must be approved by the governor and Cabinet before they are finalized under the statute.
