A little rain may have changed some plans, but it couldn't stop the 2026 Taunton Junior City Open.
A wet, windy morning on Monday, Aug. 3 saw the opening round of the Silver City's annual youth golf tournament shortened, with Divisions 2 (ages 14-15) and Division 3 (ages 16-18) playing nine holes instead of the usual 18 while Division 1 (ages 11-13) was able to just get in six holes before the skies broke open. However, a much brighter and drier final round followed on Tuesday, Aug. 4 saw all 18 holes and then some played at the John F. Parker Municipal Golf Course, and with it, three new champions crowned.
In Division 3, Taunton High rising junior Colby Emond reigned supreme, improving on his third place Division 2 showing in 2025 to take the oldest division ****** le shooting a combined 111 (+6) over 27 holes. Luke Durfee finished runner up, shooting a 113 (+8) while Emond's Tiger teammate Logan Gallinger shot 115 (+10) to finish third.
"(It was) just two good days of golf," Emond said. "Wasn't the greatest conditions, but I got it done and that's all that matters."
In Division 2, Bristol-Plymouth rising sophomore Cal Soderberg and Taunton High rising sophomore Liam Ballantine found themselves tied at 114 (+9) after 27 holes, sending the duo to a sudden-death overtime. After both shot a 5 on the first two holes, Soderberg surpassed Ballantine with a par putt for 4 on the third hole to secure the ****** le. His fellow Craftsman rising sophomore, Camden Scimonelli, came in third after shooting a 118 (+13).

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Absentee voting in Wisconsin discriminates against disabled voters, a judge ruled Tuesday, siding with groups that are seeking to force election officials to allow for electronic casting of ballots.
But Dane County Circuit Judge Everett Mitchell stopped short of ordering electronic voting, setting up a trial on that issue later. It almost certainly will not be resolved before the November election.
Disability Rights Wisconsin, the League of Women Voters and four disabled voters brought the lawsuit in 2024. They argued that the lack of an electronic absentee voting option violated their right to independence and privacy and the protections of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Mitchell issued a temporary injunction in 2024, saying that disabled voters should have the option to vote electronically. But an appeals court reversed that ruling, sending it back to the lower court, saying it was wrong to issue a temporary injunction that would have changed and "significantly disrupted the status quo."
The Republican-controlled Legislature is fighting the lawsuit.

Palantir blew past Wall Street's financial targets in its second quarter and forecast strong growth in the coming months, sending its stock surging 13% in after-hours trading on Monday.
Revenue in the three months ended June 30 increased 93% year over year, totaling $1.94 billion, compared with the $1.801 billion that ***** ysts were expecting. The AI software company posted net income of roughly $1.1 billion, or 41 cents per share, versus the average ***** yst estimate of 35 cents.
Palantir's growth was fueled by continued strength in the U.S., where commercial revenue jumped 149% from a year earlier and government revenue climbed 90%.
"Our business is compounding at a rate and scale that we have never before witnessed," Palantir CEO Alex Karp said in a letter to shareholders, noting that Palantir's second-quarter net income was more than the company generated in total revenue the year before.
The AI software company also issued another bullish outlook. Palantir expects third-quarter revenue of $2.160 billion to $2.164 billion and adjusted income from operations of $1.292 billion to $1.296 billion. It also raised its full-year 2026 revenue guidance to between $8.150 billion and $8.158 billion, up from its start-of-year forecast of $7.182 billion to $7.198 billion.

The Barons' (41-62) offense struggled out of the gate, managing only three hits, striking out 14 times and going 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position. Birmingham starter Connor McCullough also had a tough time getting hit up for two runs in the first, then Rocket City hit him again for four more in the fourth, sending him to the showers after just 3 2/3 innings. The Barons' bats were completely MIA for three innings until Anthony DePino finally snapped the no-hit and shutout with a solo shot in the fourth — his 14th bomb of the year — to at least put a dent in the deficit at 2-1.
The momentum was short-lived, however, as the Trash Pandas answered immediately with four more runs in the bottom of the fourth, blowing the contest wide open, 6-1. Birmingham scraped together a run in the fifth when Ryan Burrowes singled, and Samuel Zavala followed with an RBI double, but Rocket City answered right back after a Caleb Bonemer error helped plate another run in the bottom half. The Barons mustered an unearned run in the eighth, but the Trash Pandas matched it in the bottom of the frame to finish off the victory.

The Dodgers entered the 2026 season with ambitions of becoming team to three-peat in 26 years. Following Monday's trade deadline, they echoed that sentiment with a summer blockbuster and an encore.
Their string of deals began late Saturday night, as after suffering a 3-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox, they struck a deal that infuriated nearly the entire baseball world. The Dodgers landed two-time defending AL Cy Young award winner Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers while sending away outfield prospect Zyhir Hope, right-hander River Ryan and pitching prospect Brady Smith.
The addition of Skubal not only invigorates an already vaunted rotation (when fully healthy), it gives the Dodgers another left-handed option that is a proven innings eater. Before Skubal needed surgery to remove loose bodies from his elbow, he had logged at least six innings of work in six of his first seven starts. He hasn't matched his pre-injury average start length since returning on June 13, but he has logged at least five innings in all but one of his nine final starts in Detroit.
For a Dodgers rotation that is still missing Shohei Ohtani, Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow, adding Skubal in the mix keeps the six-man rotation as the norm for the pitching staff down the stretch. With Emmet Sheehan's demotion to Triple-A, the current rotation features Skubal, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Roki Sasaki, Justin Wrobleski and Eric Lauer, and until the other three starters return, the Dodgers could implement a weekly bullpen game. Skubal will certainly headline the four-man rotation in the postseason, and the Dodgers have seven options to choose to accompany him come October.

Now that the Major League Baseball trade deadline has come and gone, the focus shifts from speculation to evaluation.
And from where I sit, it's hard not to view the Astros' deadline as a massive disappointment.
If the reports are true that Dana Brown could be on his way out at the end of the season regardless of how this year ends, then this deadline felt less like a calculated baseball strategy and more like a last-ditch attempt to save his job.
The Astros' biggest move was sending Spencer Arrighetti, a young starting pitcher with three years of team control, in exchange for outfielder Daulton Varsho, a player who can walk away after the season. Houston also took a chance on a veteran who enjoyed an outstanding campaign a year ago but has been a shell of that player for much of this season.
That's not the type of aggressive move a first-place team should be making.

And for the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes, what Monday's trade deadline means is star players like Charlie Condin and Zac Veen are still in the organization, although they could be heading to replenish the Rockies roster soon.
It also means the Isotopes will likely be getting some new names/faces as soon during as this week's six-game homestand against the Sugar Land ***** e Cowboys. At least three — RHP Mason Adams, LHP Mark Manfredi and INF Connor Norby — have already been ***** igned to report to the Isotopes this week.

Another trade deadline has passed.
As has become customary in recent years — particularly with the expanded postseason making it more difficult to distinguish who should be buying and selling — most MLB teams waited until the final 48 hours to ramp up their trade activity. More than 40 trades were executed on deadline day alone, with another handful of deals completed in the week leading up to the final buzzer, including the seismic swap sending two-time Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal to the superteam known as the Los Angeles Dodgers.
With the deadline behind us, it's time to conduct our annual exercise of ranking (nearly) all of the deals that went down since the All-Star break, when trade activity picks up around the league.
Let's get to it.
50. Dodgers acquire C Ben Rortvedt from Mets for RP Chayce McDermott

As has become customary in recent years — particularly with the expanded postseason making it more difficult to distinguish who should be buying and selling — most MLB teams waited until the final 48 hours to ramp up their trade activity. More than 40 trades were executed on deadline day alone, with another handful of deals completed in the week leading up to the final buzzer, including the seismic swap sending two-time Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal to the superteam known as the Los Angeles Dodgers.
With the deadline behind us, it's time to conduct our annual exercise of ranking (nearly) all of the deals that went down since the All-Star break, when trade activity picks up around the league.

WWE Hall of Famer Brie Bella revealed that she suffered a broken scapula during her SummerSlam 2026 match and will be sidelined from the ring indefinitely as she recovers.
Bella announced the injury update in a Monday, Aug. 3 Instagram post and noted she will be out "for a bit" without specifying an exact time frame. She was injured during a six-person tag team match featuring her sister, Nikki, and Paige against Fatal Influence during the first night of SummerSlam on Saturday, Aug. 1.
After the event, WWE chief content officer Paul "Triple H" Levesque initially said the injury "seems pretty bad" and Bella had been taken to a local hospital for more examination.

The 2026 Trade Deadline has officially come and gone, and it's time for the immediate breakdown of the state of the Yankees following it. It's fair to say that most weren't projecting a flashy deadline for New York with a big-name blockbuster or anything of that sort, but it still comes as a surprise that at the end of the day they made only three moves: they traded Camilo Doval away to Pittsburgh, and then added Luis García Jr. alongside Heliot Ramos to bolster their lineup and provide some depth to the outfield while two of their stars are on the shelf.
Let's start with what they did accomplish before we get into what they failed to get. García is a legit A-plus addition offensively, leading the National League in slugging and coming in just behind Ben Rice for third overall across MLB. They also managed to pry him away from Washington for a basket of arms that they likely didn't have plans for this season and possibly even next, sending off their 14th-rated prospect Jack Cebert and their 25th-ranked prospect Ben Grable by MLB Pipeline's scouting, alongside Yovanny Cruz and Jake Bird. Cruz impressed in Triple-A this season and got a couple brief stints with the major league team but never seemed to be in the plans for a postseason bullpen, while Bird actively worked his way off the roster two years in a row after getting acquired at the deadline last season. Overall, that's a more than acceptable package to surrender in exchange for a bat that can mash against righties and bring some protection to Rice's spot in the order.

Goldschmidt, for all his early-season success, is still meant to be a backup for this team, and it looks as though he'll cede playing time to García at first while Rice will primarily play as the designated hitter.
What that group looks like once Giancarlo Stanton is back in the fold, who knows, but the Yankees can't plan on Stanton just sliding back in after missing most of the season and needing a bat in the worst way to stay afloat here and now. The Yankees will have García for the 2027 season as well, ****** uming there will be one amidst CBA negotiations and the very real threat of a lengthy lockout.

The Detroit Tigers moved Casey Mize moments before the 2026 MLB trade deadline, sending the All-Star right-hander and infielder Gage Workman to the San Diego Padres.
In return, Detroit received two left-handed pitchers with dramatically different profiles: Kash Mayfield, a 21-year-old first-round pick with legitimate mid-rotation upside, and Jackson Wolf, a 27-year-old upper-level arm with major-league experience.

After sending one of their best relievers to Toronto at last year's trade deadline, the Blue Jays have returned the favor in 2026. Former All-Star closer Jeff Hoffman is heading to the Twins in exchange for prospects Dasan Hill, John Klein, and Dameury Pena according to The Athletic. Hoffman is under contract for next year as well at $12.67 million, a portion of which will be covered by Toronto.
Hoffman, 33, has a high ERA but everything else about him still looks like the elite reliever he was over in Philadelphia. He has a 3.94 ERA that is artificially inflated thankto a .389 BABIP, but a 2.49 FIP provides a better insight into the type of pitcher he's been. His 1.2 fWAR is 13th among relievers in baseball, while his 14.06 K/9 is second to only the Padres' Mason Miller.
Most importantly, Hoffman brings elite strikeout stuff to a bullpen that, while improved, has really needed some swing-and-miss on the backend. His pitch mix is very Griffin Jax-esque, relying heavily on a slider that's among the best pitches in baseball and a fastball with enough velocity to be dangerous. He'll also mix in a splitter, primarily against lefties, that is also quietly pretty strong.
In return, the Blue Jays will receive pitching prospects Dasan Hill and John Klein, along with infielder Dameury Pena. Hill, 20, is the clear headliner of this group. He was the Twins' second round pick in 2024 and had an excellent debut season in 2025, appearing on the back end of some Top 100s. The Twins moved him up to High A to start this season, but has struggled mightily to throw strikes. The stuff is there, but the lanky lefty has a very long way to go before he's ready to face big leaguers. Hill was the Twins' 12th-ranked prospect according to FanGraphs, while Klein slotted in at 35 and Pena at 49.
Manager Derek Shelton has a lot more tools to work with than he did this time last week. Hoffman should slot in as the team's primary closer immediately, but I would still expect Yoendrys Gomez and Andrew Morris to have opportunities down the stretch. Those two have both been heavily used the past two months and, as we saw with both walk-off losses last weekend, have probably been a bit overexposed. Netflix is sending a Motley Crew of personalities Down Under for the first regular-season NFL game ever played in Australia.
The streamer revealed its full broadcast team for the 49ers-Rams matchup at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, with Elle Duncan hosting studio coverage alongside desk ***** ysts Michael Irvin, Nick Foles and Clay Matthews III, while Noah Eagle calls play-by-play with Luke Kuechly as his ***** yst and MJ Acosta reporting from the sideline. The game airs Thursday, Sept. 10 at 8:35 p.m. ET, kicking off Netflix's expanded five-game NFL slate.
Netflix expanded its NFL footprint from two games to five for the upcoming season, and Duncan, the face of the streamer's fledgling sports division, told Sports Media Watch that Netflix intends to run a consistent crew across that entire slate.
"We want every single one of our events to, yes, have a through-line and some consistency, and you'll get that with the desk and the talent," Duncan said.
Irvin, who already has Netflix experience, having worked the desk during last season's Christmas Day doubleheader alongside Devin McCourty and Austin Ekeler, is the closest thing this lineup has to a returning face. Foles and Matthews are both making their Netflix debuts. Foles won Super Bowl LII MVP with the Eagles during an 11-season career across six teams, but has no real broadcasting track record beyond his own The SZN podcast, which recently joined NBC Sports Philadelphia's podcast network. Today is the MLB trade deadline, and the San Francisco Giants wasted no time being active. Early in the morning, news broke that the Giants had traded All-Star second baseman to the Philadelphia Phillies for right-handed pitching prospect Ramon Marquez. The Giants are also sending right-handed reliever Caleb Kilian to Philadelphia, while getting back right-handed pitching prospect Marty Gair.
The Giants held out for a nice return for Arráez, who is in line to win the National League batting **** le this year, and it seems they got exactly that with Marquez. A 20-year old who signed as an international free agent last year, Marquez has wasted no time becoming one of the top prospects in the Phillies organization. In the most recent Fangraphs rankings, Marquez graded out as the team's No. 3 prospect, and the No. 67 overall prospect in baseball.
Marquez was thoroughly dominant in Low-A this year, posting a 1.86 ERA and a 2.65 FIP in six games, with 47 strikeouts in 29 innings, and just 10 walks. That earned him a promotion to High-A, where he's kept the performance up: in six starts at the level, the righty has a 1.50 ERA, a 1.99 FIP, and 46 strikeouts to nine walks in 30 innings. He has a high quality fastball and slider, but his money pitch is a changeup that grades out as one of the best pitches in Minor League Baseball. He should immediately slot right behind the team's No. 4 pick in last month's draft, Jackson Flora, as the second-best pitching prospect in the system.
As for Gair, he was Philly's 13th-round pick in the 2023 draft. The 23-year old is a gaudy strikeout artist but struggles with command. Across 36 innings this year (33 in Low-A and three in High-A), the right-hander has 66 strikeouts and just 20 hits allowed … but has walked 22 batters. He has a 4.50 ERA and a 3.88 FIP on the season, and has worked exclusively in relief.
The Giants have been exposed this year for not having nearly enough pitching. Seen through that lens, the addition of Marquez to pair with Flora, and fellow draftees Carson Bolemon and Kaden Waechter, is a big win. Suddenly, San Francisco's pitching pipeline looks a whole lot better than it did in June.

In the wee hours of the morning, the Mets reportedly completed a trade sending right-handed reliever Huascar Brazobán to the Chicago White Sox for a pair of minor league pitchers, Gabe Davis and Zach Franklin.
Brazobán's path to the majors was not a traditional one, as he was drafted in 2011 and toiled in the minor leagues for nine years, with a four year detour to the International League, before finally making the bigs in 2023 as a member of the Miami Marlins. As part of their trade deadline in 2024, the Mets sent Wilfredo Lara to the Fish for Brazobán's services. Although 2024 was not a great season for Brazobán, 2025 and 2026 have both been highly effective. 2026 has been easily his best year in professional baseball thus far, putting up a 162 ERA+, a 2.56 ERA, and a 2.13 K/BB ratio.
The knock on Brazobán, and the likely reason the Mets moved a reliever with three years of team control, is his age. Brazobán is entering his age 37 season in 2027, and with reliever volatility and the general aging curve of baseball, each subsequent season from now on seemed to be more of a roll of a the dice than usual.
The return includes Gabe Davis, Chicago's fifth round draft pick in 2025, currently ranked as the White Sox 18th best prospect via MLB Pipeline and 20th per Baseball America. Davis is a tall (6'9") drink of water who couldn't harness his raw stuff at Oklahoma State. Davis dominated High-A ball in eight starts, but struggled since his Double-A call up.
