In a deft bit of trade deadline buying and selling, the Toronto Blue Jays are acquiring right-hander Jose Soriano from the Los Angeles Angels for three prospects, less than a day after trading franchise stalwart Kevin Gausman to the Chicago Cubs.
A baseball official with direct knowledge of the deal confirmed the Blue Jays are acquiring Soriano. The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on condition of anonymity because the deal, first reported by ESPN, has not yet been announced.
In snagging the coveted Soriano, who has two years of club control beyond this one, the Blue Jays ensure their championship window remains pried open for the next two seasons. He also provides them a boost should their hopes of contending - they enter play Monday, Aug. 3 4 1/2 games out of a wild card spot - greatly appreciate in the season's final two months.
The cost was not insignificant: Top 100 shortstop prospect Arjun Nimmala, outfielder Eddie Michelletti and right-hander Angel Rivero. It also signals the Angels are strongly pivoting to selling under new GM John Mozeliak.

The University of Washington commit was second in the Girls Greater Catholic League with 319 kills and fourth with 76 blocks in 2025. She will certainly be in the conversation for league player of the year after being named to the all-league and all-state first teams and the district player of the year.
Think about some of the great hitters the Pandas have had just in this decade. Anna Long, Sydney Nolan, Ava Tilden, Audrey Dyas and Grace Portwood come to mind. Now Kondik can join that list after finishing with 310 kills, 105 digs and 30 blocks as a junior. At 6-foot-1 with an approach touch of 9-foot-5, she levitates on the attack and converts any serve placement into a kill. She is committed to the University of Cincinnati.

The Chicago Cubs are set to acquire veteran right-hander Kevin Gausman in a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays, confirmed an official with knowledge of the deal.
The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity because the trade wasn't yet official.
Gausman, 35, is 5-10 with a 4.38 ERA in 23 starts this season but has been one of the most consistent starters in baseball for the past half-decade, posting a 3.36 from 2020-2025. A two-time All-Star, Gausman finished third in AL Cy Young voting in 2023.
Toronto is receiving minor league outfielder Brett Bateman and infielder Ty Southisene in the trade.
Once a top prospect for the Orioles, Gausman came into his own with the San Francisco Giants in 2020 and 2021 before signing a five-year, $110 million deal with Toronto.

Defense wins championships, and often that is because of a strong foundation along the line of scrimmage. The front seven is key to stopping the run and putting pressure on opposing quarterbacks. If a defense can win against the run without devoting extra numbers to pass coverage, that can throw offenses through a loop.
The Oregon Ducks have proven they can stop the run and get after the passer, and this season should be more of the same. A veteran group, led by Matayo Uiagalelei and Teitum Tuioti, will guide the Ducks along the line of scrimmage, turning runs inside to Bear Alexander and A'Mauri Washington while making quarterbacks uncomfortable on dropbacks.
CBS Sports' Blake Brockermeyer tabbed Oregon's front seven as the third-best in the country, trailing only Oklahoma and Miami. Not only do the Ducks have experienced talent up front, but they have plenty of depth as well, including Nasir Wyatt on the edge and North Carolina transfer D'Antre Robinson on the interior.
"The Ducks return the best defensive line in the country, led by returning interior starters Bear Alexander and A'Mauri Washington," Brockermeyer wrote. "Both rank among the nation's best run defenders and have steadily improved as pass rushers. They possess the power and knock-back ability to physically dominate opponents."
While Oregon is loaded with talent along the defensive line, the linebacker room still has some questions. Jerry Mixon takes over as the leader after a breakout season in 2025 behind leading tackler Bryce Boettcher. Now that Boettcher is off to the NFL, Mixon will lead the room.

Dejan Savicevic finds it baffling that the late Franco Baresi was never recognised with a Ballon d'Or trophy and has laid the blame for that at the hands of journalists who did not vote for the iconic former Rossoneri captain in the voting procedure.
Tributes continue to roll in for the legendary Baresi, who recently died at the age of 66.
Milan icons from various generations will congregate in the city on Tuesday for Baresi's funeral. Savicevic will be among the attendees, and he stopped to speak about his former captain in an in-depth interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport that was published on Sunday.
"He was a great person, a great man. He was a great teammate and a wonderful player. He had football running through him, he understood everything and had an incredible vision of the game," Savicevic recalled.
"San Siro used to sing: 'One capitano, there's only one capitano'. It was wonderful to listen to those chants, they gave us goosebumps, it gave everyone a boost.

July 31 (Reuters) - A selloff in U.S. Treasuries this week signaled the need for the Federal Reserve ‌to earn its inflation-fighting "credibility" with interest rate increases, ‌St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem told the Financial Times.
"At this juncture, earlier, incremental, gradual interest-rate action is preferable, less costly and less disruptive than potentially later, larger and abrupt actions," Musalem, who is not a voting member of the Federal ‌Open Market Committee ⁠this year, told the FT.
Musalem, who sits on the rate-setting body, told the newspaper he ⁠had "expressed a preference" towards a quarter-percentage-point interest rate increase at this week's policy meeting, where the Fed left rates unchanged.
The interest rate decision and a hint from Fed chief Kevin Warsh ‌that the central bank may look to change its inflation goal posts helped send 30-year Treasury yields above 5.2%, a 19-year high.
The widely expected decision to leave policy on hold drew dissents from three of the 12 ‌FOMC members who wanted a quarter-percentage-point hike instead.

The Chicago White Sox didn't have to prove they were legitimate playoff contenders, but they affirmed as much Saturday, Aug. 1 when they acquired right-handed pitcher Luis Castillo from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for reliever Seranthony Dominguez, former prospect Nolan Jones and catching prospect Boston Smith, ESPN first reported.
Castillo, 33, was expendable in Seattle thanks to the Mariners' deep rotation, a gaggle of majors-ready prospects and the $24.1 million salary he's due in 2027. He also hasn't performed particularly well this season, posting a 5.06 ERA in 20 appearances, 17 starts, this season.
Yet Castillo is a three-time former All-Star who finished fifth in 2023 AL Cy Young Award voting and as recently as last season pitched 180 innings. He'll add length to a White Sox rotation that thins out after No. 1 starter Sean Burke and Davis Martin.

Blackstone picked quite a week to sell Italian subs to the market, but maybe that's exactly the moment to take a breath, look around, and put some faith (and some capital) in the enduring magic of provolone and Danny DeVito.
Jersey Mike's priced its IPO at $23 a share Tuesday night, the same 24 hours the Nasdaq officially slid into correction and 3 Fed officials staged a mutiny against their own chair. Demand did not care. The deal went ten times oversubscribed, raised roughly $1 billion, and became the largest US consumer listing of the year, landing dead center of its $21-to-25 range.
That said, chatter around this deal earlier floated a valuation closer to $12 billion. It priced nearer $7.3 billion instead, a hair above the $8 billion Blackstone paid for majority control back in 2024. If you're tasting a little red wine vinegar in those numbers, you're on to something. Ten times oversubscribed, and the sandwich shop still landed below what its own private buyer thought it was worth 2 years ago. Internationally, the combined company would reverse this approach by integrating Sazerac's developing brand portfolio into Brown-Forman's existing global distribution footprint. According to Forbes, the white paper adopts a targeted "going deep, not broad" international strategy, naming the United Kingdom, India, and Australia as main acceleration markets where Brown-Forman's current route-to-market infrastructure might enable rapid geographic development for Sazerac's spirit portfolio.
Despite the strategic logic of Sazerac's plan, the acquisition attempt has run into an immovable corporate governance wall. Brown-Forman's controlling voting block, Wolf Pen Branch LP, which includes members of the Brown Family, made a decisive joint statement rejecting the revised plan as "not actionable". Since the Brown family owns more than 50% of the Class A voting stock, no change-of-control transaction can take place without their specific approval.
This refusal marks Brown-Forman's second high-profile M&A deadlock in 2026. Earlier this year, Brown-Forman Corporation (NYSE:BF-B) formally began exploratory merger talks with French liquor company Pernod Ricard. These talks were officially discontinued on April 28 when the parties were unable to establish mutually acceptable conditions, setting the stage for Sazerac's initial unsolicited bid on May 1.
The rejection of a $32 per share cash offer demonstrates a significant value gap in Brown-Forman's stock price. The company trades at around $28 per share and has a forward price-to-earnings ratio of about 16.8x, near the low end of its historical range and a notable discount to its 10-year historical average forward multiple of around 30x. The Wall Street Journal editorial board on Monday said President Trump is wrong in his pressure campaign to get rid of the Senate filibuster for the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act.
"Bad ideas are everywhere in Washington, but here's one that belongs in a hall of fame: President Trump is again pressing Republicans to nuke the Senate's 60-vote filibuster rule to pass the SAVE America Act," the Journal's editorial board wrote.
"Or in other words, hand progressives the tools to pack the Supreme Court and create new states, in exchange for a voting bill that isn't a clear political winner for the GOP," the board continued.

"The liberals who want to turn Texas Blue, like, don'tttt," Rogan pleaded. "You're going to ruin it. You're going to ruin it for you, too."
