The bombshell statement landed at 16:00 BST on Thursday, 30 July.
In terms of impact, European football's governing body Uefa could not have gone any bigger.
"Uefa and its national **** ociations will not participate in Fifa competitions," it said.
Eleven brutal words. The definitive reaction to Fifa president Gianni Infantino's plan to sell a 20% stake in a subsidiary company set up to run the world governing body's competitions, including the World Cup.
A company it is intended Fifa will run but that will be part-funded by private investors, including the brother of US President Donald Trump's son-in-law, Joshua Kushner.

Some stock drops look like bad news on the surface. Some are, yes, but some also tell a completely different story underneath.
And I think American Express (AXP) investors have been handed the latter. The payments giant beat earnings expectations, raised its full-year revenue guidance, and reported its strongest card member spending growth in three years. The stock fell anyway.
This kind of reaction can frustrate shareholders and even confuse casual observers. But for "Mad Money" host Jim Cramer, it's a pattern he's seen before, and one he thinks is creating a clear opening.
I think it's a terrific opportunity in one of the best-run companies on earth.
American Express CEO Steve Squeri echoed that confidence in the company's Q2 2026 earnings statement, noting: "Six months into the year, we're seeing stronger momentum than we expected."

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — David Cifaldi and his two hiking companions were crossing Montana's ominous Froze-to-Death Plateau and approaching the top of the state's highest peak when their adventure took a bizarre and dangerous turn: Cifaldi slipped and impaled himself on his trekking pole as he fell.
The 44-inch (112-centimeter) steel-tipped pole passed through the flesh beneath Cifaldi's left arm, missing any vital organs, and protruded from his back. After conferring with his friends — and considering the high cost of a helicopter rescue — Cifaldi knew who would save him: himself.
"I was like, 'We've got to get off this mountain.' And they're both like, 'I don't know about that,'" Cifaldi said of his friends' initial reaction. "I'm pretty confident this is outside my chest wall. 'Tis but a flesh wound."
The 32-year-old nurse, who works in wound care at a hospital in Billings, Montana, did a self-assessment. He was alert. There was little pain or blood. And the pole wasn't moving. The group used a satellite-based communication device, a Garmin inReach, to contact local authorities and inform them of their plan to self-rescue.
Then they started hiking out. They carefully descended from the plateau along an unmarked route, navigating through boulders and snowfields before bushwhacking their way to an established trail.

New York City's pied-à-terre tax was designed to extract money from second-home owners wealthy enough not to live in the city full-time. A side effect no one planned for: it's pushing middle-class and working homeowners, people who already live in their houses, into estate-planning conversations they've never had before, at hourly rates they've never had to pay, for advice the wealthy have had access to for generations.
The rush of publicity accompanying the mayor's office highlighting a list of over 680,000 New York properties that could theoretically be subject to a new tax has inadvertently advertised how public most property data is. And it's advertised the benefits of seeking some totally legal privacy, or risk inadvertent doxxing, courtesy of Gracie Mansion.
"The wealthy and the ultra-high-net-worth have been in this game for a long time," said Myles Fischer, a partner who co-leads the Trusts and Estates practice group at Harris Beach Murtha. "The rest are sort of catching up." And that isn't cheap. Many middle-class and blue-collar homeowners are "being forced into a situation where they have to sit down with lawyers" to get planning advice that families with means secured years ago. After all, he added, "it's not that you have to be a rich person to have something worth protecting. We see it from across the board."
The trigger, in this case, was a public records disclosure. When the DOF released its supplemental pied-à-terre ****** sment file, the coverage focused on the penthouses and the LLCs holding them. But the unfiltered file swept in far more than luxury properties—it included modest homes in Bayside, single-family houses in Staten Island, properties whose owners may have had no idea their name, address, and ****** sed value were sitting in a publicly searchable dataset. Many still don't.
Fischer wasn't surprised by the reaction. "Anonymity is desirable when it can be achieved," he said, "but anonymity is also typically only one piece of the pie, so to speak. It's part of the tax plan, part of the estate plan, part of the ****** et protection, limitation-on-liability sort of pie." Privacy, in other words, is the door. The estate planning is what's behind it.

European governing body UEFA will hold an emergency meeting later on Thursday to deal with plans from FIFA to bring private investors into its events led by the World Cup.
Sources told dpa that the meeting also reported by other media is scheduled for the afternoon.
UEFA has condemned the plans which FIFA president Gianni Infantino defended late Wednesday and which have drawn mixed reactions from other confederations.
Germany's Bild paper said leading officials including German Football Federation (DFB) president Bernd Neuendorf discussed the FIFA plans via a UEFA video call on Wednesday.
"We must not lose the fans' support, but we are well on the way to squandering that support. I consider this to be extremely problematic and unacceptable," Neuendorf told broadcasters ZDF.

FIFA hopes to have private funding in its controversial World Cup company complete by the end of October, the Press ******* ociation understands.
Plans to sell stakes in a private company which would oversee all commercial and operational aspects of FIFA's competitions have drawn a furious reaction from UEFA, and raised concerns among European clubs and major leagues around the world.
Now PA has obtained documents setting out an indicative timeline to complete the investment process by the end of October.
Investors will be given access to a term sheet and select materials in August, with investors submitting initial 'Letters of Intent' (LOIs) in September, indicating the amount they wish to invest.
Binding bids would be agreed in October and funds from investors would be transferred to FIFA by the end of that month.

LeBron James hasn't played a minute for the Philadelphia 76ers, and yet, he has already broken a record as a member of the team.
On Wednesday, Fanatics announced that the former Los Angeles Lakers superstar set a new benchmark for jersey sales by an athlete changing teams within 48 hours, surpassing Shohei Ohtani's previous record.
The NBA world promptly reacted to yet another historic achievement from the four-time MVP.
On Monday, the 76ers officially announced James' signing on social media, unveiling the 22-time-All-Star's new blue jersey with his iconic No. 23. A crown, a nod to James' nickname "The King," and a hat featuring the franchise logo capped off the simple yet impactful introduction.
It didn't take long for James to make history in Philadelphia. Two days after the announcement, he surpassed the 48-hour jersey sales record Ohtani set following his high-profile move from the Los Angeles Angels to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2023, prompting widespread reactions from around the NBA.

PHILADELPHIA − In life, every action has a reaction. And so it is in the high-stakes world of NFL finances, something the Eagles fully understand.
Heck, they practically wrote the book on how to keep core star players together. Jalen Carter was just the latest example. The Eagles officially signed Carter to a four-year contract extension worth as much as $152 million on July 29. Carter's average annual value of $38 million makes his the largest contract for a defensive tackle in NFL history. At least for now.
Carter is at the top of the DT pay scale despite being just 25 years old, entering his fourth season, and coming off a season in which injuries to both shoulders limited him to 11 games and 3 sacks.
Buy Philadelphia Eagles tickets
So yes, the contract is a gamble, especially because it really doesn't start until 2028 and lasts through the 2031 season.

Eddie Howe has left his role as Newcastle United head coach following talks with the club's hierarchy, bringing an eventful five-year tenure at St James' Park to an abrupt conclusion.
Sky Sports News understands that discussions between Howe and senior Newcastle figures had been taking place over the previous two days. However, the head coach reportedly began preparing for the possibility of leaving several weeks ago, suggesting this was not simply a reaction to one meeting or disappointing pre-season result.
Newcastle have not yet clarified whether Howe resigned, departed by mutual consent or was effectively sacked. Until an official club statement explains the circumstances, the precise nature of the separation remains uncertain.
Howe continued to perform his duties throughout the period of speculation. He oversaw training, worked with the club's new signings and prepared Newcastle for the 2026/27 Premier League season despite apparently harbouring serious concerns over his position.
That professionalism will be recognised by supporters, even if questions remain over why a manager who delivered one of the most successful periods in Newcastle's recent history has left at such an awkward stage of the summer.

Those beginning to worry about the renewed chip stock rout may find comfort in the fact that the broader markets are holding up very well.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) is still trading near record highs and above all key moving averages, per Yahoo Finance AlphaSpace data. The S&P 500 (^GSPC) is holding above its 100-day and 200-day moving averages, but late last week it slipped below the 50-day.
A few factors are preventing the chip stock pullback from harming the broader market, according to Charles Schwab strategist Kevin Gordon. However, investors should be on the lookout for whether these trends reverse.
'You've got essentially two-thirds of S&P 500 companies that are trading above their 200-day moving average. That's relatively healthy and still consistent with the market that is more rotational in nature and not necessarily one that is correctional," Gordon said on Yahoo Finance's Opening Bid.
The equal-weighted index and cyclical stocks have all signaled a strong economy, he explained. "And when you do look at the reaction of the market to some of these earnings beats, most of the pressure and most of the underperformance has been concentrated in the tech sector. Outside of that, when you look at financials or industrials or consumer discretionary, the reaction in the market has actually been positive."

Night View Capital, an investment management firm, released its second-quarter 2026 investor letter. The letter highlights that AI is a transformative force, comparable to electricity due to its industry-wide impact. A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. Although fears about the software sector have led to significant declines in stock prices, the letter argues that AI integration will ultimately benefit many companies. They recognize that some software firms may experience temporary slowdowns, but most will adapt and succeed by embracing AI, citing advantages like systems of record, high switching costs, entrenched distribution, and rapid AI adoption. The sharp decline in software valuations appears to be an overreaction rather than a sign of industry failure. Nightview believes the so-called "software panic of 2026" is temporary, and resilient businesses will adapt and flourish in the age of AI. In addition, please check the Strategy's top five holdings to know its best picks in 2026.
In its Q2 2026 investor letter, Night View Capital highlighted Atlassian Corporation (NASDAQ:TEAM). Atlassian Corporation (NASDAQ:TEAM) is a software company that develops collaboration, project management, and software development tools. Night View Capital stated the following regarding Atlassian Corporation (NASDAQ:TEAM) in its Q2 2026 investor update:
"Atlassian Corporation (NASDAQ:TEAM) is a new position this quarter. It owns the tools that software teams use to plan and ship their work, which places it at an interesting spot in the AI story. The world is about to write a great deal more software, much of it with AI ****** istance, and all of that software still has to be organized, tracked, and shipped by human teams. We think the company that sits at the center of how software gets built is a fine place to own in a decade defined by building more of it."

He did not want to guess where he will be after the MLB trade deadline, either. Yet as the Detroit Tigers ace walked off the Comerica Park mound with two outs in the seventh inning, the reaction from the crowd made the uncertainty impossible to ignore.
Detroit fans rose for Skubal once again, offering a long ovation during what may have been his final start in a Tigers uniform.
Skubal tried to stay where he has remained throughout weeks of trade rumors.

A proposal that could reshape the commercial future of the World Cup has sparked fierce opposition from European football's governing bodies, politicians and supporters.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino unveiled plans this week to create a $20 billion (€17.5 billion) company to run the World Cup with private investors, including Joshua Kushner, the brother of Jared Kushner and linked to the Trump family through his sister-in-law Ivanka Trump, the daughter of US President Donald Trump.
The proposed commercial subsidiary, FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), would oversee competitions including the World Cup and Club World Cup, as first reported by_The Times of London_, which football experts say could change the nature of the competition forever.
The plan has sparked backlash from European football fans, politicians and federations, who accuse the move of being a sellout. Infantino has set a September deadline for the proposal, while UEFA vows to sink the plans. Euronews brings you the reaction:
UEFA was among the first organisations to condemn the proposal. European football's governing body made clear that football is not for sale, warning against turning the sport into a commercial ******* et.

July 29 (Reuters) - The top U.S. commander for the Middle East has warned troops that cellphone videos shared online can help Iran target American bases, and sources told Reuters some deployed personnel could soon be ordered to surrender their phones.
Any crackdown on mobile communications would add a new dimension to the conflict for the thousands of ‌U.S. troops in the region, many of whom still rely on phones to periodically message loved ones and **** ure them they are well.
Admiral Brad Cooper, in a previously unreported letter, said ‌Iran was benefiting from being able to see the success or failure of its strikes in near real-time by searching news reports or online posts by journalists referencing "reactions, photos, and footage from the cellphones of our troops."
"The direct, unavoidable cost of this open-source intelligence could be measured in the lives of American service members and civilian residents in targeted Gulf countries," Cooper, head of U.S. Central Command, wrote in his July 28 letter, a copy of which was obtained by Reuters.

During his prime with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Antonio Brown established himself as the premier wide receiver in the NFL. But behind the scenes, former Steelers safety Ryan Clark saw the seeds of future turmoil being planted long before Brown's public breakdown and eventual departure from Pittsburgh.
Appearing on the "Not Just Football with Cam Heyward" podcast with current Steelers captain Cameron Heyward, Clark reflected on the locker room dynamics surrounding Brown's rise to stardom.
Heyward recalled Clark's immediate, emotional reaction the day Pittsburgh signed Brown to his first major contract extension. He shared a story about how Brown had said something to former defensive coordinator **** LeBeau, and the defense, including Clark, did not take kindly to it.
He recalled how emotional Clark became when he heard that Brown had been paid. Heyward asked Clark if he remembered what he said in response.
"Yeah, he's gonna F it up," said Clark. "The entire Antonio Brown thing, just makes me sad, you know, how it played out."
