Gilberto Mora may have fuelled transfer speculation over a prospective move to Liverpool with his reaction to one supporter over the weekend.
Earlier this month, one Latin American reporter claimed that the Reds have already made an offer for the Mexican wonderkid, understood to be in the region of £38m.
The playmaker – who turned 18 last week – was a breakthrough star at the World Cup over the summer and has already made 75 senior appearances between club (Tijuana) and country.
Mora is currently sidelined with injury but was seen making his way back to the dressing room along with his teammates after their 0-0 draw against Puebla on Saturday.
When one spectator brandishing an LFC shirt excitedly shouted 'Liverpool' at the teenage playmaker, he replied with a thumbs-up gesture, sending the supporter into hysterics.

MANILA, Aug 15 (Reuters) - Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro rejected on Saturday China's accusation that he has "consistently attacked and smeared" Beijing, branding the ‌remarks as a "classic squid tactic" aimed at avoiding the issues at hand.
Teodoro ‌was responding to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun, who on Friday said Teodoro had previously led efforts by Philippine authorities to apprehend Chinese citizens who, Beijing said, were legally working in the Philippines.
"This individual has consistently attacked and smeared China," Guo told reporters, referring to Teodoro. "What he is damaging is not only China-Philippines bilateral relations, but also the ‌interests of the Philippine state and its people."
Teodoro, in a statement, defended the May law-enforcement operation at a steel facility in Misamis Oriental that resulted in the arrest of Chinese nationals, saying it was lawful and supported by evidence gathered through court-issued search warrants.
He cited what he said were violations involving the production of substandard, radioactively tainted steel, the dumping of polluted water, and the release of toxic emissions.

MANILA, July 31 (Reuters) - The Philippine Department of National Defense said on Friday that foreign state-backed academic and cultural exchange programmes needed to be put ‌under greater scrutiny, amid concerns about the influence of Chinese state-linked institutions on ‌local education.
Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro said public scrutiny and institutional transparency regarding foreign state funding in local education were "fundamental duties of national governance" and were necessary to protect both academic integrity and national security.
An investigation published this week by U.S.-based think tank SeaLight identified China's Jinan University as the primary training destination for Chinese-language teachers working in Chinese-Filipino schools in the Philippines. Scholars from the ‌university earlier claimed that the northernmost Philippine province of Batanes belonged to China.
In an article published on Thursday by China's state-run Global Times, Dai Fan, director of the Center for Philippine Studies at Jinan University, said Philippine authorities were stretching the concept of national security too far and were treating Chinese-language education programmes as a security risk without providing sufficient evidence.
But the Philippine defence department said China's National Security Law requires citizens, educational institutions and private organisations to ‌cooperate with state intelligence agencies, raising concerns about the independence of academic exchanges involving Chinese state-linked entities.

Canelo Alvarez has suggested he will never box David Benavidez, saying “it’s not fair” that the Mexican-American fights in the weight classes he occupies.
Fans have long desired a showdown between Mexico’s Canelo, a former four-weight world champion, and Benavidez, a three-weight world champion, with many accusing Canelo of “ducking” the 29-year-old.
Canelo has held ***** les at super-welterweight, middleweight, super-middleweight, and even light-heavyweight, while Benavidez has held gold at super-middleweight, light-heavyweight and cruiserweight.
Benavidez was even the WBC mandatory challenger to Canelo at super-middleweight for more than two years, without obtaining a fight with the 36-year-old. Benavidez thus moved up to light-heavyweight and, most recently, cruiserweight, where he took the WBA and WBO belts from Gilberto Ramirez with a stoppage win in May.
But Canelo has said he does not care about suggestions that he has avoided Benavidez, telling journalist Ariel Helwani: “I’m not worried because I did everything. I did everything in boxing. I accomplished everything in boxing, and I have nothing to prove, but yes, I will miss boxing a lot [when I retire].

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers continue to receive recognition for one of the strengths of their roster heading into the 2026 season.
In his rankings of the NFL's best offensive tackle duos, Sports Illustrated's Gilberto Manzano placed Tampa Bay's pairing of Tristan Wirfs and Luke Goedeke at No. 3 in the league. Much of that recognition starts with Wirfs, who has already built one of the most decorated résumés among active offensive linemen.
As Manzano pointed out, Wirfs is the only player in NFL history to earn ******* ociated Press First-Team All-Pro honors at both right tackle and left tackle. After helping to protect Tom Brady during Tampa Bay's Super Bowl-winning 2020 season, Wirfs has seamlessly transitioned to protecting Baker Mayfield's blindside while continuing to perform at an elite level.
Manzano also noted that, according to Pro Football Focus, Wirfs earned top-five grades as both a pass blocker and run blocker last season, further cementing his status as one of the league's premier offensive linemen.
While Wirfs headlines the duo, Goedeke has quietly developed into a dependable starter on the right side. Since moving into the starting lineup, he has steadily improved his consistency and helped solidify one of the better tackle pairings in football. His continued development has allowed Tampa Bay to field quality protection on both edges of the offensive line rather than relying on one standout player.

Liverpool will have to be patient to sign a coveted teenager who's been described as 'one of the best young players in world football'.
The Reds were recently namechecked in reports citing interest from some of Europe's biggest clubs in Gilberto Mora, the 17-year-old who caught the eye for co-hosts Mexico at this summer's World Cup.

Sources from his homeland later claimed that Andoni Iraola's side are ready to pay the fee required to sign him from his current club Tijuana, where his release clause is purported to be somewhere in the region of £20m.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast for Football Insider, Pete O'Rourke explained that, because of FIFA regulations prohibiting the international transfer of players until they turn 18, suitors for Mora will have to wait another few months until they're able to sign him.

MANILA, July 9 (Reuters) - The defence minister of the Philippines on Thursday rejected as "baseless" and "ludicrous" **** ertions by Chinese scholars that its northernmost island-chain province belongs ‌to Beijing, calling the claim concerning and worthy of challenge.
Chinese state-run news site ‌GDToday reported on July 2 that scholars from institutions including Nanjing University argued at a June 30 symposium that Batanes was a natural extension of Taiwan and therefore belonged to China.
Beijing has not formally endorsed that position.
The **** ertions may add a new dimension to long-running tensions between Manila and Beijing, which are already embroiled in multiple disputes over islands and features in the South ‌China Sea.
"I view this, once again, as probably a signal of a preconceived intention," Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro told reporters.

Liverpool have moved early in this transfer window, but the bigger picture remains fairly simple. One senior signing, plenty of links, and a lot of noise. Victor Munoz has arrived for £34.5 million as Andoni Iraola begins work, but beyond that, the club are still in **** sment mode while rivals push ahead.
One of the more interesting situations now centres on Darren Motsi. The Leicester City midfielder, still only 15, has already played above his age group and produced strong numbers in youth football. His return last season, three goals and two **** ists in 19 appearances for Leicester Under-21s, plus three goals and two **** ists in 11 Premier League 2 matches, explains why clubs are circling.
Reports had pointed towards Liverpool as the likely destination after Motsi decided to leave Leicester. That now looks less straightforward. According to Talent ID Hub, Tottenham have entered the race and could yet disrupt Liverpool's plans.
This is where context matters. Liverpool are being linked with everyone from Gilberto Mora to Bradley Barcola, Eduardo Camavinga, Said El Mala, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Antonio Nusa. Some of those names are plausible, some are not, and some may simply be part of the usual market churn. Yan Diomande appears to be heading elsewhere if recent reports are accurate, while decisions on players such as Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott may shape what Liverpool do next.
Against that backdrop, Motsi would represent a longer-term investment rather than an immediate first-team solution. Clubs that recruit well do not ignore that market. They attack it early, and they do it with conviction.

The first day without World Cup football was tough, but the action is back today. France-Morocco kick off the tournament's quarterfinals.
That said, things are still happening off the pitch.
On Sunday you're playing a World Cup round-of-16 match at the Azteca, and on Wednesday you're collecting your diploma at graduation. Quite the emotional roller coaster Gilberto Mora has been through.
Watching your national team when you're 10,000 meters in the air. Not easy, but something a Wi-Fi connection can fix. Even more so when it was a match like Tuesday's Argentina-Egypt game. Just ask these passengers.
Some national teams are already back home after being knocked out of the World Cup. And now it's time to ***** s their performances. Zlatan has done it... in pure Zlatan style. It's priceless.

Liverpool have made an enquiry about the prospect of signing 17-year-old Mexico midfielder Gilberto Mora from Club Tijuana.
Mora made four appearances for co-hosts Mexico at the 2026 FIFA World Cup this summer and was the youngest player called up to the tournament.
It continued a rapid rise for the teen, who has already won 12 senior caps, and holds the record as the youngest player to score in the Mexican top flight at 15 years and 320 days old.
He also hold the record as the youngest player ever to win a senior international tournament, after helping Mexico to Gold Cup success in 2025.
According to El Universal, Liverpool have made an approach to sign Mora, while ******* nal are reportedly ready to rival that interest. Club Tijuana have rejected previous approaches from clubs in Europe, MLS and Brazil for Mora, who is regarded as Mexico’s most exciting prospect.

Mexico's dream of a first World Cup quarterfinal appearance since 1970 was again deferred four years as El Tri fell 3-2 to England on Sunday, July 5, in a round of 16 thriller at the Estadio Azteca.
It marks the end of an era for the Mexico national team, with goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa playing his last Cup. Other veterans like forward Raúl Jiménez and left back Jesús Gallardo haven't announced their plans for their international future, but time is working against them making the 2030 World Cup squad that will try to make a run in Spain/Portugal/Morocco.
Still, the future feels bright for the Mexico national team. El Tri legend Rafa Márquez steps into the managerial role ready to lead a team that already has fielded the youngest World Cup knockout match starter since Pelé in Gilberto Mora and had five players 23 or younger in their 26-man squad at this tournament.
So, what will the team look like when they once again search for a round of 16 win four years from now? It's clearly way too early to say, but we've projected what Márquez's starting XI will look like.
New players will emerge. Injuries will happen. Players in form now will fade and fail to make it to 2030. Others who seem washed up will make the 2030 squad, to our surprise (Gallardo wasn't on our list in 2022 and started every match of the 2026 tournament except the final group game against Czechia).

Gilberto Mora earned his second consecutive start in the knockout rounds when he was selected to the Starting XI against England in the World Cup round of 16.
The 17-year-old Mora previously started against Ecuador in the Round of 32 and in the final group game against Czechia when he made history as Mexico’s youngest World Cup starter In the first game of the tournament against South Africa he came off the bench and at that time was Mexico’s youngest player to enter a World Cup match.

Gilberto Mora got his third consecutive start at the 2026 FIFA World Cup when he was named to the starting XI against England.
Earlier in this World Cup, he became the youngest Mexican ever to play in a World Cup game at 17 years and 240 days old, as a second-half substitute against South Africa. The previous record was set by Manuel "Chaquetas" Rosas in 1930, when he was 18.

Mexico have a superstar on their hands with 17-year-old midfielder Gilberto Mora, who started against England in the World Cup round of 16.
Earlier this week, Mora became the second youngest player to start a knockout game at the World Cup since 1958, when a young Pele scored in each of Brazil’s three knockout games.
He did pip Pele in a different category, though. Winning the Gold Cup with Mexico last summer at just 16 made him the youngest player ever to win a trophy with the national team.
Mora’s story is just beginning, but here’s what we know so far about the wonderkid midfielder.
Mora plays with Club Tijuana in Liga MX. He made 54 appearances this past season, scoring ten goals and laying on two ****** ists. Pretty impressive for a teenager.

In a report for the Daily Mail, it’s menioned that Liverpool – along with Real Madrid, Chelsea and both Manchester clubs – are ‘aware of’ Mora’s abilities.

After a Friday packed with football at the World Cup, here are the most surprising images from a historic matchday.
With the running joke that Gilberto Mora is Mexico's great young prospect at just 17 years old, 40-year-old 'Memo' Ochoa went to read him a bedtime story and bring him some coloring books before he went to sleep.
Cape Verde's players interrupted Leo Messi's post-match interview to take photos with him. An unforgettable moment for them.
Sidny Lopes scored one of the goals of the World Cup against Argentina. A thunderous right-footed strike that will go down in history. He then went to celebrate in the stands, where he found his girlfriend and hugged her amid the madness.
But then came the heartbreak, with even children crying over the African team's defeat. They dreamed, they came close to a miracle, and they went down fighting. Respect.

Four matches, four wins. Eight goals scored, none conceded. A coming-of-age for 17-year-old prodigy Gilberto Mora. The first half of Mexico’s World Cup has gone perfectly.
El Tri have played each of those matches at the brutalist Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The ground has a unique connection to the World Cup: It is the only place on the planet to have hosted matches in three different tournaments.
It is also hallowed ground. In 1970, it witnessed the coronation of the Pelé-led Brazil side that is still considered the best ever. In 1986, it saw Diego Maradona’s goal of the century (and his infamous handball) against England. In 2026, the atmosphere during Mexico’s round-of-16 match against Ecuador was the most intense of this World Cup so far.
Mexico’s preeminent soccer historian Juan Villoro describes it as the country’s “cathedral of football.” But the venue is not appreciated by everyone.
For a soccer stadium, the Azteca is unusually high up, at 2,200m above sea level. For athletes not acclimatized, a high-energy sport like soccer at altitude puts a major strain on the body. Playing high up is different from playing in the heat: Heat-related fatigue is like a steady drain on the body, whereas altitude-driven fatigue is like suddenly hitting the wall.

Gilberto Mora’s impressive rise on the international stage continues to attract attention, and the Mexican teenager has now been linked with one of the biggest ambitions imaginable for any young footballer – playing for Real Madrid.
According to MARCA, the Gilberto Mora Real Madrid connection goes beyond mere speculation, as the player’s long-term dream is to wear the famous white shirt one day.
Notably, the 17-year-old talent has been one of the revelations of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and his latest display helped Mexico secure a 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the Round of 32.
As his reputation continues to grow, the Mexico wonderkid is increasingly being viewed as one of the most exciting young talents emerging from North America.

In a recent report, Fichajes mentioned that Manchester United are keeping tabs on Club Tijuana talent Gilberto Mora. It has been stated that the Red Devils are monitoring the progress of the Mexico international this summer.
The 17-year-old managed to shine at times with his performances for Club Tijuana in the final third last season. Mora found the back of the net six times and secured one ******* ist in 20 matches for the Mexican outfit in the previous campaign across various competitions.
The gifted teenager is currently one of the most talented playmakers in his homeland. Hence, Man United would do well to get a deal over the line for him this off-season.
His current deal at the Mexican club will run out in the summer of 2029, which could make it difficult for the Red Devils to land him on a cut-price deal in this transfer window.

A benches-clearing brawl erupted in Friday night’s game between the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers and Triple-A Round Rock Express, leaving both clubs awaiting potential discipline.
With the Rainiers down to their final strike in the ninth inning, third baseman Patrick Wisdom’s second hit by pitch in as many innings sparked shoving — and eventually punches — before the Express secured a 9-7 win at Cheney Stadium.
Express right-hander Emiliano Teodo’s 101-mph sinker plunked Wisdom in his side, prompting both dugouts to clear before Wisdom could reach first base. Tacoma’s third baseman remained near the bag as tempers briefly cooled, but shoving broke out near the first base dugout that extended the altercation for roughly 30 seconds.
Wisdom and Rainiers coach Jacob Nottingham were ejected by home plate umpire Jared Duerson, along with Express center fielder Gilberto Celestino.
MLB/MiLB have yet to announce potential suspensions as of Saturday evening.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Gilberto Mora became the youngest player to start in a World Cup for Mexico when the 17-year-old sensation took the field against the Czech Republic on Wednesday night.
Mora is the youngest competitor in this World Cup. The midfielder became the eighth 17-year-old to play in the tournament when he entered as a substitute during Mexico's 2-0 win over South Africa on June 11.
Pelé was the first World Cup player under age 18 when he debuted for Brazil in 1958. The youngest in World Cup history was Norman Whiteside of Northern Ireland, who played in 1982 at 17 years, 41 days. Mora is the first 17-year-old to see World Cup action since Femi Opabunmi and Bartholomew Ogbeche for Nigeria in 2002.
Mora, who plays for Tijuana in the Mexican league, suffered a groin injury early in the year that sidelined him for two months, and coach Javier Aguirre was cautious with him in the first two matches. After subbing in against South Africa, he did not play in last Thursday's 1-0 win over South Korea.
The player known as Morita has already set several records related to his age. In August 2024, he became the youngest to start and score in the Mexican first division at age 15. In January of last year, he became the youngest to debut for the senior team at 16.
