Over the last few years, the concept of winning the Triple Crown has been fading among horse racing's stakeholders.
On Monday, Churchill Downs Inc. and the New York Racing ****** ociation might have delivered its death blow.
In announcing a joint partnership for a six-race series beginning in 2027 with a $5 million bonus attached to the end of it, one entity was notably missing: The Preakness.
The six races will cover the Kentucky Derby on May 2; the Belmont Stakes on June 5; back to Churchill for the Matt Winn stakes in early July; the Jim Dandy and Travers Stakes at Saratoga in late July/August; and then a newly created race to finish the series at Churchill in September.
As for the Preakness, the second jewel of the Triple Crown? Well, it still exists, but the traditional timing of the race — two weeks after the Kentucky Derby — has become incompatible with the way modern trainers manage their thoroughbreds. Golden Tempo and Sovereignty, the last two Derby winners, both skipped the Preakness, as did Rich Strike in 2022.

Glasgow might have saved the Commonwealth Games, but don't expect to see them back on these shores for a generation.
Four of the last seven editions have been staged in Great Britain, and it's clear that Commonwealth Sport realises it needs to cut ties to the mother country for its future relevance.
Scotland gets its eternal thanks for stepping in at just 18 months' notice when Australia said it couldn't afford to host. Australian taxpayers ended up paying Glasgow £100m in compensation to stage the Games on their behalf and then duly topped the medal table with 70 golds.
"Glasgow has acted as a bridge to the future of the Commonwealth Games movement," said Commonwealth Sport president Dr Donald Rukare.
"Every host writes its own chapter, and Glasgow's has been one of bravery, courage, friendship and, above all, outstanding innovation."

Texas A&M's 2026 wide receiver rotation will be led by junior Mario Craver, who, after transferring from Mississippi State before the 2025 season, reeled in a career-high 59 receptions for 917 yards and 4 touchdowns and is widely considered one of the most dangerous players after the catch, averaging nearly 9 yards after contact.
Combined with redshirt sophomore Ashton Bethel-Roman, who recorded 28 receptions, 547 yards and 5 touchdowns during his first starting season, and junior Terry Bussey, who has yet to live up to his elite potential, experience will not be an issue, while the offseason addition of Alabama transfer WR Isaiah Horton, who brings much-needed size to the rotation at 6'4" completes one of the more dangerous receiver room in the nation.

Under former head coach Jimbo Fisher, Texas A&M's wide receiver rotations struggled to find any consistency, no matter who was throwing the ball, and even after landing five-star Evan Stewart and four-star Noah Thomas in the historic 2022 recruiting class, injuries, a lack of development, and poor usage derailed both players' careers in College Station.
Stewart, who transferred to Oregon after the 2023 season, is currently a redshirt senior with the Ducks, while Noah Thomas transferred to Georgia after three seasons with the Aggies, appearing in 35 games and recording 73 receptions for 934 yards and 15 touchdowns, serving as A&M's starting X receiver during his final season, which was by far his most productive.
Why Thomas decided to transfer to Georgia is still surprising to this day, appearing in 10 games with the Bulldogs and recorded just 16 receptions for 264 yards and four touchdowns. Even after landing transfer wide receivers Mario Craver and KC Concepcion, Thomas would have still seen extensive playing time as the X receiver, especially after Jerome Myles' injury before the 2025 season.

Texas A&M's 2026 offense will now feature transfer wide receiver Isaiah Horton, who, at 6'4" and now 215 pounds according to the latest roster update, brings much-needed size to an A&M wide receiver corps that was completely built on speed last season, as transfer wideouts KC Concepcion and Mario Craver combined for 1.836 yards and 13 touchdowns.
After Concepcion was the first of a record 10 players selected in the 2026 NFL Draft, going 24th overall to the Cleveland Browns, Mario Craver returns as starting quarterback Marcel Reed's No. 1 receiver after reeling in 917 yards and four touchdowns, including a record 207 yards during the Aggies' road win over Notre Dame.
Marcel Reed's 3,169 yards, 25 touchdowns and 12 interceptions led an Aggie offense that averaged 33.8 points per game last season, but after running back Le'Veon Moss was lost for the year during A&M's home win vs. Florida, Rueben Owens picked up the slack before struggling at the end of the season, rushing for a career-high 639 yards and five touchdowns.
This week, On3's Crain & Cone released their top 10 college football offenses, and while Texas A&M was selected, the Aggies did earn an honorable mention alongside BYU.

Longtime San Diego Chargers linebacker Bill Ray Smith Jr. has died, his family announced. He was 64.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Smith's family said that the College Football Hall of Famer had been dealing CTE-caused dementia.
"It is with profound sadness that we share the loss of our beloved Billy Ray Smith Jr., who passed away peacefully surrounded by family," the statement said. "Billy Ray faced his long journey with dementia caused by CTE with unmatched bravery, dignity, and strength. Billy Ray brought so much joy, light, and laughter to the world as a devoted father, husband, son, and loyal friend."
A degenerative brain disease, CTE has often been found in those who played contact sports, such as football, and others who have experience repetitive head trauma. It's known to cause cognitive decline, depression and violent mood swings.
Smith, the fifth overall pick in the 1983 NFL Draft, played all 10 of his NFL seasons with the Chargers from 1983-1992. He was a Second-team All-Pro in 1989 and was named to the franchise's 50th Anniversary Team in 2009.

Counting Stars has been shining bright during her three-year-old season
During the Spring and Summer, most of the Thoroughbred racing focus is on events like the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Belmont Stakes, and Travers Stakes. All these races are restricted to three-year-olds and mostly males run in them. For every race that has colts contending for greatness and notoriety, there is a sister race for those wonderful three-year-old fillies. During the 2026 racing season, a fantastic filly named Counting Stars has been quite celestial and is shining as bright as any three-year-old currently, regardless of gender.
The grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks has long been a summer showcase for the three-year-old girls. Inaugurated in 1917, this mile and an eighth dance over the New York dirt has seen its fair share of fantastic fillies. The 2026 edition was a showdown between Kentucky Oaks (opening leg of the Triple Tiarra) winner Always A Runner and Acorn Stakes (third leg and sister to the Belmont Stakes) champ Counting Stars. As the race unfolded, it became more of a showcase for a fabulous female.
Breaking alertly under jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., Counting Stars immediately ******* umed the lead and rolled through some solid early fractions (23.86 opening quarter mile, 47.60 half mile). Sashaying to the top of the stretch in an almost effortless fashion, this daughter of Honor A.P. was suddenly challenged by her rival and Oaks winner Always A Runner. With an eighth of a mile to go, the two were running side by side and separated by a whisker. Suddenly, the Stars aligned and with an amazing comet-like burst of speed, this mercurial filly trained by Mark Casse left her rival eating kickback as she whisked towards the wire. At the sixteenth pole the race was over and Counting Stars cruised past the finish an emphatic 4 ¼ lengths ahead in Stakes record time (1:48.98).
"Coming into the race I was about as confident as you can be in this filly", says trainer Mark Casse. "At the eighth pole, I wondered if perhaps I was wrong and she's not as good as I think. Always a Runner is a very good horse so naturally I was a little concerned, but then she responded to the challenge with a huge effort down the lane".

A few talking points on the starting lineup. The big news was a first start for Hayden Hackney. The other talking point for the team was the absence of Jarrad Branthwaite. It was reported that this was as part of his planned reintegration into the squad. Tyler Dibling and Mykolenko return and Jake O'Brien started on the bench. David Moyes was starting with his favourite 4-2-3-1 with Beto up top.
A lovely night in Stoke with Everton in their all blue kits. Everton were immediately on the front foot and a nice bit of interplay only broke down when Dewsbury-Hall ****** ed a ball into the box and it was easily handled by the Stoke keeper. Interestingly, it looked like Dibling was playing at right ack with Hackney in front of him.
An early corner was recycled by the Blues and when it fell to George, he laced a shot just narrowly wide of the post. A very good start from the boys in blue. Stoke tried to slow the game down and get on the ball but Everton were pressing high. When George intercepted a pass, his pass was slightly overhit for Dibling.
Everton went off the boil and some lax defending by Tarkowski allowed Gallagher in on Travers but a great leg save denied the home team. It was then Everton's turn to hold onto the ball. It was all a little scrappy. Beto did some fighting for the ball in the middle of the park with no end product. A nice ove down the right side saw Rohl deliver a nice cross but no one was there when the keeper spilled the ball.
The interplay on the left side between KDH and George was really good. However, Travers was the saviour again as Thomas drilled another shot on the goal. Everton were then hanging on as Stoke delivered cross after cross.

The fashion house created three wedding looks for singer/model Gabbriette Bechtel, who married English musician and 1975 frontman Matty Healy last weekend in L.A., in front of a crowd that included Charli XCX, George Daniel, Emily Ratajkowski, Alex Consani and more.
Following the nuptials, the brand issued a press release touting the event as the official launch of Matières Fécale bridalwear. It came as a surprise to just about everybody involved in football when Manchester United activated Youri Tielemans’ release clause yesterday. Despite the club being on the lookout for additions in central midfield, the Belgium international had not been linked with a move to Old Trafford.
There is no doubting the quality of Tielemans and the agreed fee of £35 million is more than fair, but there is a slight sense of frustration that this is a deal that, had the club been braver, could have been so much better for United. If the midfield playmaker hits the ground running, all of this will likely be forgotten, but it is important that the club learns from its past mistakes with this transfer.

Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel's future is "in doubt," according to multiple reports, as the findings from a $12 million investigation into his department are set to be presented.
The Free Press had previously learned from multiple people that higher-ups at Michigan have been briefed on the findings from the investigation run by the law firm of Jenner & Block. More recent reports indicate Manuel's future is in jeopardy, with the decision potentially related to the findings from the investigation.

Nearly a month after the Carolina Hurricanes clinched the second Stanley Cup ****** le in franchise history, the team got to see the names that are forever engraved on Lord Stanley's Cup.
As is tradition, each member of the team will get a day with the Cup this offseason. For the fourth year in a row, the trophy's official engraver, Louise St. Jacques of Montreal, etched the names before it goes on its summer vacation.
In total, there are 53 names listed for the 2025-26 Hurricanes. There are 24 players and 22 staff, including general manager Eric Tulsky, head coach Rod Brind'Amour and special advisor to the GM and franchise legend Justin Williams.
Also included is owner Tom Dundon and his wife, Veruschka, plus their five children: Caden, Dax, Drew, Blake, and Tagan.
