Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) is about to significantly expand its operations in Venezuela. The company's CFO, Eimear Bonner, revealed at a Barclays conference on September 8 that the American oil giant plans to more than double the number of oil rigs it operates in the country as part of its five-year plan to increase output.
The statement follows the company's recent announcement that its joint venture partnerships in Venezuela would invest more than $7 billion to more than double oil output to 600,000 barrels per day by 2031. The current production from Chevron's three Venezuelan JVs totals around 290,000, which is all exported to the United States.
The move builds on Chevron's longstanding presence in Venezuela, as it was the only American oil major that continued operating in the country under a special US license, allowing it to produce and export oil despite the sanctions.
The expansion comes alongside a much larger agreement between Washington and Caracas announced this month, which gave the US majority control over around 20% of Venezuela's proven crude reserves. The White House has now invited American oil companies to revive and modernize the South American country's oil infrastructure and more than double its crude production in the next few years.
Chevron has maintained operations in Venezuela since 1923 and even stayed through the nationalizations that forced ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips to exit in 2007. This gives it a significant competitive advantage, since it already has a longstanding relationship with the state-owned PDVSA and extensive experience operating in the country's complex regulatory environment.

Oil futures have been rising, but recently hit a peak. ConocoPhillips (COP) reported strong Q2 earnings on Aug. 6, and COP stock may be fairly valued. However, shorting COP puts and vertical put credit spreads are attractive alternatives for value investors.
COP closed at $137.35 on Friday, Sept. 11, a recent three-, six-, and 12-month peak. That followed WTI Oct. futures contract (CLV26) spiking above $104 late Thursday, Sept. 10.

The market clearly believes that Conoco's Q3 earnings and cash flow will be strong, given how high oil and gas prices have been this quarter. Barchart's CLV26 chart below shows the recent peak in oil futures.
Oil has been rising due to ongoing tensions and kinetic action between the U.S. and Iran, as well as in other areas in the Middle East where oil is transported.

Cramer called CVX a steal above $200 after Chevron's downstream earnings surged from $737 million to $4.87 billion year over year.
Chevron's P/E of 34 runs richer than Exxon's 23, while ConocoPhillips offers more crude upside, up 49% year to date.
A 20-year Microsoft power deal and Hess synergies running 50% above target give Chevron cash flows insulated from crude swings.
Just released. Our ***** ysts combed the entire stock market and named the ten best stocks to buy right now. The report is free. Enter your email and see if any of your stocks made the cut.
Jim Cramer opened Squawk on the Street on the first trading day of September with a market backdrop he described in blunt terms. Two ships had been fired on in the Strait of Hormuz, Treasury yields were pushing higher across the curve, and diesel prices were climbing amid a supply picture already strained by Ukrainian strikes on Russian refining capacity and U.S. refiners operating near full utilization. Cramer called the combination "unholy" and said the AI trade had gone nowhere for about a year. Then he offered a single actionable idea.

ConocoPhillips stock (COP) is just off a three-month peak. That makes selling COP covered calls with a one-month expiry attractive to shareholders. Here's an example: the $140 call expiring Sept. 25 yields 1.75%.
COP closed at $133.25 on Monday, Aug. 24, down just over 1%. It's down from a 3-month peak of $134.89 on Aug. 20. That's well over a recent trough of $115.04 on Aug. 5.
QQQ is Still in a Negative Gamma Regime. Here's How a 'Put Wall' and Fibonacci Support Could Come Into Play.

More than half a year after the U.S. captured and extracted Nicolas Maduro from Venezuela, the biggest American oil firms haven't returned to operating oilfields in the world's largest oil reserves holder.
Chevron, which has operated in Venezuela throughout Maduro's reign, is extracting and exporting oil to the U.S., but neither ExxonMobil nor ConocoPhillips have returned as negotiations led by Venezuela's state oil firm PDVSA are not progressing as fast as the U.S. Administration probably thought in January when it extracted Maduro and hailed the big U.S. return to Venezuela's oil industry.
There have been some deals signed in recent months, with service providers and smaller American oil companies, which seem more willing to take the risks of operating in the country, which has yet to see a stable political and fiscal environment for large-scale operations.
Earlier this month, Venezuela signed deals with oilfield service major SLB and Hunt Oil Co. as part of efforts to boost investment in its key energy industry, the country's oil minister, Paula Henao, said.

ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) picked a good week to hand over the keys. On August 6, the company said that CEO Ryan Lance will retire after 14 years, with CFO Andy O'Brien stepping in on September 1, right when ConocoPhillips had its best quarterly results since 2022. Adjusted profit came in at $3.24 a share, well ahead of the $2.88 Wall Street expected, and revenue jumped 32.4% to $19.5 billion.
ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) pulled off that strong quarter even as production slipped nearly 6% to 2.25 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, leaning instead on a 36% jump in realized prices to carry the results. O'Brien, a nearly 30-year company veteran, inherits a $7 billion free cash flow growth pledge through 2029 that depends heavily on finishing the pricey Willow oil project in Alaska. It is a project whose price tag has already climbed to $9 billion.
One of the company's rivals, Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) told a different story the week before. On July 31, the firm posted its biggest quarterly profit in four years at $14.7 billion, up 67% from the first quarter. It still came up short of the $3.60-per-share estimate with adjusted earnings of $3.52. Its shares fell 1% on the news.
So why did ConocoPhillips's win move the stock while Exxon's four-year-high profit left investors cold?

Eagle Capital Management, an investment management company, released its second quarter 2026 investor letter. A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. In the quarter, Eagle Capital Management discussed how enthusiasm around AI capital spending has driven strong S&P 500 earnings growth while also increasing risks from elevated valuations, concentrated demand, and aggressive investment **** umptions. Eagle remains a strong believer in AI but prefers constructing a portfolio that can perform across multiple outcomes rather than relying on one forecast. The firm believes current earnings can overstate underlying economics because semiconductor equipment is depreciated over several years, while free cash flow growth remains much weaker. It also expects competition and additional capacity across AI labs, hyperscalers, and semiconductors to eventually create winners and losers. These dynamics are encouraging Eagle to recycle capital toward attractive opportunities outside the most crowded AI trades while maintaining selective exposure to high quality beneficiaries. The portfolio trades at a 20% market discount with faster expected EPS growth. Please review the Strategy's top five holdings for key selections.
In its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, Eagle Capital Management highlighted ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP). ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) explores for, produces, transports, and markets crude oil, bitumen, natural gas, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and natural gas liquids. On August 18, 2026, ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) closed at $129.72 per share. The one-month return of ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) was 9.20% and its shares gained 36.71% over the past 52 weeks. ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) has a market capitalization of $155.84 billion.
Eagle Capital Management stated the following regarding ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"The energy & metals companies we own benefit from favorable multiyear supply/demand outlooks, management teams that are good capital allocators, and **** et bases that are well-positioned on the global cost curve.
ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP), the largest U.S. pure-play upstream oil producer, has low-cost, long-lived inventory that we believe is underappreciated relative to peers. In the coming years, its free cash flow should inflect higher as the Willow project in Alaska comes online and transitions from a cash drag to a cash generator. We see the oil market as reasonably balanced, but risks may skew to the upside over the next couple of years as the world manages shortages from the Strait of Hormuz, and the path to its full and enduring reopening remains murky. We expect EPS growth in the mid-teens over the next several years."

Earnings continue to roll in, driving the stock market to new highs.
The latest reports from Datadog (DDOG), AMD (AMD), Sandisk (SNDK), and Western Digital (WDC) suggest some profit-taking on Wall Street, as robust earnings and raised guidance haven't been enough to stanch post-earnings sell-offs after those stocks made huge gains so far this year.
On Thursday, ConocoPhillips (COP), Constellation Energy (CEG), Airbnb (ABNB), DraftKings (DKNG), and Celsius Holdings (CELH) also report.
Overall, it's shaping up to be a strong earnings season for the S&P 500 (^GSPC). According to FactSet data, ******* ysts estimate the year-over-year S&P 500 earnings growth rate for the second quarter will be 47.5% — surging past the five-year average of 16.4% and the 10-year average of 10.3%.
If that holds, it will mark the second consecutive quarter of earnings growth above 20% for the index and the seventh straight quarter of double-digit growth.

Chevron is cutting up to 9,000 jobs this year. That's a fifth of its global workforce, gone, while it digests the $53 billion Hess deal. ExxonMobil trimmed 2,000. BP shed more than 5 percent of its staff, plus 3,000 contractors. ConocoPhillips is cutting 20 to 25 percent. Imperial Oil is cutting a fifth of its people and shutting its Calgary office entirely. And in June, U.S. oil and gas extraction employment fell to 114,500 workers, the second-lowest June the Bureau of Labor Statistics has on record, beaten only by the pandemic bottom of 2021.
Production didn't fall; it's near record highs…but the jobs are disappearing anyway.
And before anyone ******* umes it's renewable energy's fault…it isn't, not directly, at least. ******* ody at Chevron got a pink slip because a wind farm opened next door. Automation, mergers, and a decade of investors who'd rather see returns than growth did this.
Ten Years, 72,800 Fewer Jobs

Harris Oakmark recently released its second-quarter 2026 investor letter for the "Oakmark Fund". A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. The objective of the fund is to deliver capital appreciation by investing in a diverse set of large-cap US companies. In the quarter, the Fund (investor class) underperformed the S&P 500 Index, returning 2.45% vs. 15.20% for the index. The industrials and financials contributed to performance at the sector level, while information technology and energy detracted. Investing in AI-benefited enterprises kept market leadership narrow during the quarter. In addition, you can check the Fund's top five holdings to determine its best picks for 2026.
In its Q2 2026 investor letter, Oakmark Fund highlighted ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP). ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) is a US-based energy company that produces, transports, and markets crude oil, bitumen, natural gas, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and natural gas liquids. On July 13, 2026, ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) closed at $112.85 per share, reflecting a market capitalization of $137.48 billion. ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) posted a one-month return of 1.36%, while its shares gained 21.93% over the past 52 weeks.
Oakmark Fund stated the following regarding ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) in its Q2 2026 investor update:
"ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) was the top detractor during the quarter. The U.S.-headquartered oil and gas exploration and production company's stock declined as crude prices, which had risen on Middle East disruptions, eased. Positively, the company's underlying fundamentals continue to track our expectations. We value management's focus on shareholder returns and see a long runway for growth from the company's geographically diverse and inventory-deep energy portfolio."
ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) is not on our list of 40 Most Popular Stocks Among Hedge Funds Heading Into 2026. According to our database, 74 hedge fund portfolios held ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) at the end of the first quarter, up from 65 in the previous quarter. While we acknowledge the potential of ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk. If you're looking for an extremely undervalued AI stock that also stands to benefit significantly from Trump-era tariffs and the onshoring trend, see our free report on the best short-term AI stock.

Consider the situation in the Persian Gulf right now. We recently published Jim Cramer Didn't Hold Back On **** eX's IPO & Discussed These 12 Stocks. Diamondback Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ:FANG) is one of the stocks discussed by Jim Cramer.
Diamondback Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ:FANG) is another oil and gas exploration and production company that Jim Cramer has recently started commenting on. The shares are up by 36% over the past year and 30% year-to-date. Like ConocoPhillips, Cramer has also recommended the stock for those who want exposure to the sector in the current environment. Specifically, the CNBC TV host believes Diamondback Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ:FANG) is for the growth-seeking investor. Most of the debate surrounding oil stocks is in the context of the Iran war and the resulting tightness in supply. In his tweet, Cramer commented on oil prices and wondered whether easing supply could make investing in these stocks difficult:
"With oil back to $96 here we go back to Conoco and Diamondback And, of course, higher yields….relentless but now there is more supply coming and it will be a much tougher slog"
Here are his earlier remarks about Diamondback Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ:FANG):
"Look if you have to buy the oil stocks, it's Conoco [inaudible] Oxy's second. If you want growth, you still do Diamond. And if you want natural gas, [inaudible] Devon. And I like natural gas a lot. I think that EQT is really [inaudible]. EQT is really good because it is the data center natural gas. And we want anything data center."
