Six months ago, Sonay Kartal could not stand up and brush her teeth without "being in agony".
The pain caused by a stress fracture in her back eventually subsided, but the 24-year-old Briton still had a long road to full recovery, which needed to be navigated with patience and hard work.
Kartal did not make her return to competitive action until little under a month ago.
But on Monday, she became the new British number one after an extraordinary week at the Wuhan Open, where she reached the biggest final of her career in just her third tournament back.
"In the first month or so, I was at home in bed - sometimes I had good days but there were also bad days where I wasn't really able to walk without some form of pain," Kartal said.

The line outside St. Patrick's Cathedral, where Daddy lay in state, was a mile long. One hundred thousand mourners passed by his coffin. Family and friends took turns holding vigil. The first time I witnessed that public outpouring of grief was when I accompanied Mum, along with my siblings, to a special service the night before the funeral. Mum's face, swathed in a black veil, was composed, almost serene, as we knelt to pray. The singer Andy Williams, a close friend of Mum and Daddy, sang "Ave Maria" a cappella, his resonant tenor echoing through the cathedral. I was thinking that Mary and all her angels were in the very room with us. Mum, Grandma Rose, and our aunts told us that Daddy was in Heaven and happy to be with Uncle Jack, his eldest brother, Joe, and his sister Kick. I could picture that lovely reunion. I was eight years old, and as a child had such a strong sense of Heaven as a physical place that when I flew in an airplane I chose the window seat so I could try to find Heaven in the clouds. Mum also believed Heaven was real, and she felt the full presence of God when she prayed. Her faith kept her going. It lifted us all through those awful days.

The owners at Andrewsfield Aviation, near Braintree in Essex, said they were preparing to close operations because there was no successor lined up after they retired.
But the TV chef, who achieved his pilot licence in July, helped arrange new ownership to ensure the hangar doors remained open.
"Andrewsfield is a special place with so much potential," said Oliver, who is from Essex.
"It has an extraordinary history and is full of wonderful people with an exemplary training environment that has changed my life for the better."

On September 17, Coherent Corp. (NYSE:COHR) announced an upgraded Pluggable Optical Line System that covers the full C-band and fits in a compact QSFP module, the same slot ordinary transceivers use. That is a lot of networking gear shrunk into a plug, and it follows a quarter of 34% revenue growth. Here is what the launch means, and where the stock's story gets harder to read.
Start with what the product does. The upgraded system can pack 32 wavelengths onto a single pair of fibers, which Coherent says adds up to as much as 25.6Tbps of traffic on links running 2km to 200km. It is designed for the latest 800G coherent optics, and it configures itself, handling link setup and laser safety without a technician tuning each connection. Coherent also says the system is generally available and already shipping in high volume, in 400G and 800G versions that work with existing network setups. Madhu Krishnaswamy, who runs the company's telecom transport unit, describes the goal as easing the usual trade-off between raw performance and operational simplicity.
The launch also sits on top of a business that is already moving. On August 12, Coherent reported results for its fiscal fourth quarter, which ended June 30: revenue of $2.05 billion, up 34% from a year earlier. One of the world's largest companies has become a cash-return machine of historic scale, but its engine is now facing a serious test.

Seagate Technology Holdings plc (NASDAQ:STX) announced on September 9 that its subsidiary, Seagate HDD Cayman, completed the redemption and exchange of its remaining 3.50% exchangeable senior notes due 2028 on September 8. Seagate Technology Holdings plc (NASDAQ:STX) has removed a 2028 maturity and the remaining settlement uncertainty attached to this instrument. Based on the approximately $150.7 million principal balance and 3.50% coupon, the transaction eliminates roughly $5.3 million of annual stated interest. That is a calculated annualized saving before taxes and any interest income lost on the cash used.
